"A widow at an open grave" is not literal (except rarely) but suggests a release from "outworn elements" of experience while, at the same time, a cherishing of "every enduring value," such as memories of the very best in people no longer with us. When accompanied by aplomb, this is not despair but reorientation. Life goes on, and "a girl blowing a bugle" summons us to "challenge our fellows and be challenged by them in turn at each point of potentiality." There is an eagerness for self-expression and self-justification.
