The process of getting to the new Epoch beginning Tuesday the 7th has difficult moments. "A man submerged in water over which a heavy rain is falling" suggests that one could "attempt things and enterprises beyond his powers." This could result in "a sudden and unlooked for ruin" unless one realizes one is not able to do certain things at certain times. "The strong swimmer alone can attempt the deep waters."

A gambler or bookmaker is at "a racecourse, the racers at full speed." Speculation of some kind could be obsessive. Or one may simply act out that role in a small way in ordinary business deals. The previous paragraph obviously warns against high risk.

"A cavalier fully armed," while "outwardly cautious and suave in manner, is ever alive to his own interests and on the defensive." But an offensive-aggressive attitude could lead into dangers. Assertion is good only if one observes due regard for others. Venus squares Mars until February 15 and is exact this weekend. Love-squabbles could be intense. Better, there could be carefully regulated negotiation and mellowing in relationships before they heat up.

We are safe if we follow "a new path of realism in experience." "Enlarged understanding comes from personal and immediate participation in the events of an everyday world." One can identify clearly one's role and thereby mobilize practical resources.

}Mellow Reflection and Realism{

Moon in Gemini

While long-term trends are getting better (as reported in the weekend post) it seems that today there is a mellow, reflective or re-collecting, nostalgic mood. This could be in connection with absent or departed friends, for example.

We should beware of Schadenfreude, that is, being secretive and unsympathetic, taking pleasure in others' misery. Charubel warns against that in the degree "a sexton digging a grave." True Christian love includes blessing all including those who seem to have been wrong or inimical.

"A person with a pair of scales in the act of weighing" has an affinity with measuring things and is "apt in matters of detail." One might accomplish that in connection with budgeting, investing, or organizing home and headquarters.

"A wreck floating on a peaceful sea" suggests reminiscence, recalling old adventures which are currently in a state of abeyance. Some have tried to become "rich in a hurry" and been driven back. However, with wisdom  one "may retrieve the family fortunes and acquit oneself with honor." The keyword is Salvage. Nothing is lost that cannot be salvaged.

Mars is at the degree "a new path of realism in experience" through Friday this week. We are getting our bearings for the Bright Hermetic Epoch beginning Tuesday the 7th (lasting two months into April). "Continuing rewards result from trying one and another way of doing things." There is "a determination of values on the basis of their demonstrated usefulness." We identify "the role we can play in daily living."

Things are getting gradually easier. I would recommend re-reading the report for the coming week, posted here Friday, for one or another of its paragraphs could yield clues.

Monday: The symbols for the day are almost euphoric. "Fireworks exploding in mid-air above a crowd" indicate "ephemeral popularity, but it is soon over." Enjoy it while you may.

At another level of fatuousness, "A man of stout make, good proportions, and round rosy features, looking very merry, is dancing grotesquely." There are no cares! The future is nothing! Be merry now!

But Mars is in the degree "A new path of realism in experience" so we retain our sanity and perspective through what could be an effusive social day. The keyword Identification shows "effective mobilization of the self's practical resources for the role it must play in daily living."

Still, however realistic, that role could be friendly and social. "Three men are advancing arm in arm." We "are given to friendship" and "foster amicable relations between others." We are "animated by the best feelings" and have many supporters. Some will be instructors or leaders. Fondness for pleasure could be excessive, yet there is happy accord.

Message for Weekend of January 28-29, and Following Week

Weekend of January 28-29, and Following Week:

}Realistic Vitalization{

Settling down to weekly reports, from Saturday to Friday, seems the best approach for longer-than-daily forecasting, based on decades of experience. Before we look at the coming week, let's review this from last week:

What we seem stuck in now is not our future, so we have hope for something fresh. Namely, as I've pointed out, beginning February 7, better potentials emerge, and then beginning March 7 even better, and maybe best of all beginning with the zodiacal year March 20, 2023 to March 20,2024. Though Mercury is direct he is moving very slowly, as is Mars. Great things require more time to mature than trivial ones.

Mars was at the degree "an airplane falling" as reported in many of last week's daily reports, and as I write there is news of a secret "no fly list" used by governments ominously to deny access to airline flights. Also, a friend's acquaintance, on the way to Las Vegas for a vacation, had her flight canceled and felt glum about it. She is not the only one.

Jupiter last week was at the degree "A large iron cross lying on the ground. All looks dark, sad, and gloomy." This was true for me, much of the week, feeling "under the weather" and grateful that I could do basic things. But for the coming week Jupiter will be at a degree symbolized by "a large forest of big oaks; no underwood; all is clear beneath; hence a spacious vista presents itself, affording plenty of scope for wandering." "This person will prosper if allowed to go in his own groove."

And rather than the falling airplane, Mars occupies the degree "a new path of realism in experience." This is "effective mobilization of the self's practical resources for the role it must play in daily living." The keyword Identification implies "self-orientation as a consequence of a persistent weighing of the pros and cons in normal life relations, and a determination of values on the basis of their demonstrated usefulness."

Along with that, "a hydrometer" prevents the water of experience from overflowing useful bounds. Efficiency "shapes events to one's own convenience." At a more elevated level "There is no symbol to this degree" of mystery because it denotes "one who has something not in common with the rest of his race, allied to fourth dimensional space."

As for human love, it may be better because Venus separates from her sad conjunction with Saturn and moves toward a square with Mars, perhaps unsettling yet vitalizing. In this connection, "A man is walking beside a cow, with his hand on her back, bringing her home from the pasture at eventide." Whom are you "bringing home" to a scene of familiar reassuring sharing and togetherness?

Spiritual potentials center in Neptune in her own sign, forming aspects of solidarity: "One not capable of being described in words, who will possess great magnetic powers and destroy popularized evils--a reformer, healer, and philanthropist."

This should be an important and mostly beneficial day, with obstacles pointed out by the symbols, but they are not insuperable.

The Epoch Watch: There are two ways of looking at the Hermetic Epochs: 1st, as sharply divided by a "quantum leap." That means the current Dark or Slow Epoch began December 14 and shall end February 7. 2nd, as changing gradually, and in that view I discern that things seem to be getting a little better in the past day or two, emerging from dark to bright by February 7 with a noticeable gradation. I see this from the news shows and podcasts. I have been almost angry at them for a few weeks because they have seemed so tangled in unclear, muddled information and questionably based opinions. But as I write on Thursday I sense improvement. People are getting gradually clearer views.

"An Eastern town" was discussed yesterday and remains the symbol of Mercury. For me it has been Kiev and Moscow, that is, the two "Eastern towns" ravaged by (or presiding over) war, for what could be more important than preventing nuclear devastation? No one sane could be happy with the endless increase of armaments being demanded by Zelenskyy and provided heedlessly by Biden, no matter one's political persuasion. It has to stop as soon as possible.

That warning is clearly given by Mars's symbol, "an airplane falling" which very significantly was the position of Mars on August 6, 1945 during the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima. Podcasters are warning now of Russia's nuclear weapons, and the "doomsday clock" has been moved forward. This is not a laughing matter. Dr. Jones says of the "falling" degree that "there can be an expectation of righting the dive, thus re-establishing control of the flight as serves a conscious purpose." Let us pray.

"A lion standing in an open arena" may be captive or imprisoned for a while, but loves freedom above all things, and so "will suffer and serve, and thus gain both wisdom and freedom for all time." He makes his liberty of action a blessing to humanity.

"A chest floating on an open sea" does not indicate a weak character, yet "he will pass for such on account of his indifference to his own affairs and those of others." Placid and calm, he is "willing to sacrifice much for his own comfort and peace of mind." Luna sextile Venus in afternoon and evening provides a favorable current for happy relaxation in variable circumstances.

^Toward Recovered Authority^

Moon in Aries

First, I need to remind us of the Dark Hermetic Epoch. Many people think that when Mercury turns direct, all problems connected with it are solved. No! As I have been maintaining here for decades, the three-week retrogradation is only the center of an eight-week period, the Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch, when Mercury slows, goes retrograde, then gains speed very slowly. The current DHE began December 12 and continues through February 6. We are still experiencing the confusions, tangles, and backtrackings which people generally associate with Mercury Retrograde.

I point this out because I have been listening to news shows and podcasts, and it is abundantly clear that newsmen and commentators on both sides of all issues remain very confused and almost tongue-tied if one tries to understand exactly what they are saying. Both the events they report, and any coherent understanding of those events, are  "twisted deep and strange." Do you "get" exactly what Joe Biden's "documents" are all about and of what he might be guilty, and why it matters? I have listened to anti-Biden and pro-Biden discussions of all this and in both cases Biden's quote, "There's no there there" seems accurate. But that is equally true of the "document crimes," so-called, of Donald Trump, supposedly uncovered in that search of Mar-a-Lago most have forgotten by now. And all this is only a small example of the politically swirling confusion we are getting from the media and from podcasters, whether they be Left, Right, or Center. That's why I said, a while ago, "Just give yourself a break from news, supposedly important information, and podcasts" maybe until February 7. Or sample that sometimes, but remind yourself continually how uncertain and tenuous it all is.

Thursday: 'An airplane falling" was discussed yesterday. It can be a crisis, or small semi-crises you face, and does not have to be tragic but requires 'highly advantageous reorientation of selfhood through every issue."

"An Eastern town" could be in the Near or Far East, or could be any town east of you. You might have a proclivity in that direction, or could get some advantage or intangible inspiration by thinking about something to the east. Maybe you could take a walk or shopping trip in that direction.

"A target pierced by a rapier" turns up on the very first day of a Venus-Mars square (January 26 through February 14). This is "a degree of vulnerability." "Let us beware of the direct thrust and practice the use of the two-edged sword." A want of discretion could lead to trouble or disgrace through headstrong or impulsive words or acts.

A happier outlook comes from "a scepter surrounded by a crown" indicating "distinction and offices of power and influence." One will be "upright and unbending in integrity" with sincere affections, and ambitions resulting in Authority.

Yesterday, as reported here, Mars returned to the degree symbolized by "an airplane falling." And in the morning I thought that I had lost my smartphone, which would have been a major major hassle. It seemed that I must have left it in the restaurant I was in last night. I found that that establishment would not open until 4 p.m. and was in panic mode hoping that somehow someone had saved my phone in lost-and-found. I even asked a neighbor to call my number so I would know if the phone was buried somewhere in my apartment. He tried and there was no audible ring.

Then, despite my panic mode, I decided to carry on with my regular Bible reading, and just as I started reading the Christian Science textbook in addition, there was my phone in the pile of books! What a relief. Ans so the "airplane falling" was righted before disaster happened. Then, an hour later believe it or not, a friend told me that today he forgot his phone in a restaurant where it was charging, and had to go back to recover it! I hope you are not suffering such hassles but if you are you can chalk it up to this degree. As recorded yesterday, Dr. Jones says of it (9Gemini10) that there is "an expectation of righting the dive, thus re-establishing control of the flight." I hope that will happen for you because Mars remains at that degree today and through Sunday the 29th. Let's make it a positive rather than painful experience.

"Crossed swords surrounded by a wreath of laurels" show powers of attack and defense. There can be an incisive manner, with an acute penetrating mind. Action seems the keynote rather than static possession.

"An archer drawing a long bow" can be a teacher or prophet, because he is attracted to what is remote rather than near, and to the invisible more than the visible.

Inherited wealth or property is suggested by "a spacious park with a baronial mansion in the background." One's ancestors "must have been of a high order" and are continuing their blessings upon one's well-being and destiny. Prayer and meditation can link us with invisible benefactors.

~Blossoming Choices~

Moon in Pisces

Karmic sobering, challenging third| of this week ends at 4:51a PT | 7:51a ET | 12:51p UT

Sourness or bitterness in the psychic atmosphere accompanies Venus's close conjunction with Saturn, but at best it is a sifting of loyalties, a determination that "I am going to be true-blue to this person or this group." How do I escape from loneliness? By tolerating those who would be friends if I could appreciate their unique qualities. Failing that, we could experience "an airplane falling" which is a crisis. Yet there is "an expectation of righting the dive, thus re-establishing control of the flight as suits a conscious purpose."

"A man inspecting horses" is a good judge of the possible value of resources and strategies. We still suffer a slow Mercury, with its Mercury-retrograde symptoms, yet that planet is increasing its speed gradually so we are better able to make valid choices.

"A cherry tree in full blossom" indicates someone attractive, blooming, "with early promise of genius," whether or not he or she brings that to fruition.

In lighter moments we may appreciate "a cup, a pack of playing cards, and dice," that is, a bit of a playful gamble, or game-like expenditure of youthful energy and hope. Lose or win doesn't matter; the mood is all.

We have "an encampment of women, children, old people and invalids; a man at the gate is keeping guard." This could be neighborliness, or sharing among those indisposed in your neighborhood, or trying to be "your brother's keeper" in some noble manner.

"The letter T or the Tau" is said by Charubel to indicate "one whose inner nature few understand, and who will not be popular at the present time; outwardly a babe, but inwardly a giant--'of such is the kingdom of heaven.'"

An upward trend points to "a stately mansion surrounded by trees in an expanse of pastureland" which does not have to be literal but can be a place you enjoy visiting, or your place if you are a host. It gives you a feeling that you are "a good member of society, an upholder of the traditions of one's people." One is pleasant, frank and humane, entertaining friends or being entertained, with wide sympathies and possessions.

Message for Weekend of January 21-22 and coming week: "Living Out Mysteries{

Weekend of January 21-22, and coming week:

}Living Out Mysteries{

Let's not just "live in the future," and yet I admit my advice has been almost in that mode, because I want all of us to realize that what we seem to be stuck in now is not our future, so we have hope for something fresh. Namely, as I've pointed out, beginning February 7, better potentials emerge, and then beginning March 7 even better, and maybe best of all beginning with the zodiacal year March 20, 2023 to March 20, 2024.

Also, this weekend is in the Dark of the Moon, with the New Moon occurring Saturday morning but that is not exactly a jump-start, more like a gentle beginning of a new lunar month. For this report, let's confine ourselves to the coming week, Saturday the 21st through Friday the 27th.

I've selected symbols for the week; one is "A new moon that divides its influences." "One's action must be tentative until he achieves his own true self-discovery. He makes a fine skill of uncertainty." The keyword is Finesse. One can slowly capitalize on life's transitions, and on the emerging potentialities of self.

What are you dealing with, specifically? "A large group of pheasants" suggests illimitability more than specificity. "Continuous variations come to dramatize an infinite potential inherent in the whole."

Is there any fun in the week? Yes, in "a cup, a pack of playing cards, and dice." Sepharial warns that this could signify a weakness for gambling ending in dissipation or spoliation. However, let's be kind to ourselves and have a game of cards, realizing with Plato that childlike play is facilitative of wisdom. There is more than meets the eye in what one is led to do. For Saturn, Charubel says, "There is no symbol to this degree. A degree of mystery, allied to fourth dimensional space, denoting someone who has something not in common with the rest of his race."

Indeed, it can be a week of mystery: "A venerable man is seated in an uncertain light; before him are several books, and various scientific instruments surround him." 'His mental vision will see where others are in darkness." "Inclined to solitariness, yet always surrounded by friends; one who will be sought after while himself seeking none."

The "nobody loves me" aspect, Venus conjunct Saturn, is with us, though it can be an aspect of loyalty, of being "true blue" to someone despite her or his faults and weaknesses. "A man is walking beside a cow, with his hand on her back, bringing her home from the pasture at eventide." Whom are you "bringing home" to a scene of familiar reassuring sharing and togetherness?

The symbols insist on the mystical, as this: "* * *" "One not capable of being described in words, who will possess great magnetic powers and destroy popularized evils--a reformer, healer, and philanthropist."

All this could be slow to manifest, for though Mercury is direct he is moving very slowly, as is Mars. Great things require more time to mature than trivial ones. One might feel that one is "a performer of a mystery play," "called on to interpret the individual and his world to each other." A spiritual subtlety permeates the week's ambience.  It is "a gift for dramatizing the deeper or real opportunities of a human society."

\Rest plus Smooth Industry/

Moon in Capricorn

As mentioned frequently, both Mars and Mercury are motionless, a rare phenomenon because while Mercury slows down and goes motionless six times a year, Mars does so only once in 2.5 years or so. This has been unusual and I feel it as lassitude. How about you? I watch political broadcasts and podcasts and it feels to me that nobody knows what is going on, that it is "one step ahead and one step back" for everyone on both (or all) sides of political- or opinion-differences.

There might be a discernible difference in this "lassitude" or "ennui" toward the end of January, and then an even greater improvement beginning February 7, and then further "out of the woods" beginning March 7. It's not that nothing is possible till then but that we should be patient when it feels like pulling taffy or walking on chewing gum.

Symbols for the day are appropriate. "A man is lying upon a sheaf of corn, asleep, with viands at his side." There could be "dreams, visions and vain projects" because one "fantasizes while others are working." At the mercy of others, one could neglect simple everyday opportunities close at hand. However, given the planetary "lassitude" outlined in the previous paragraph, some of this could be natural and helpful rest rather than laziness.

That's specially true in that we are in the final day of an Old Moon, a time often given to extra relaxation. However, the sun is beginning a smooth, vitalizing trine with Mars and so there is energy to tap into, as if one were "a beaver at wok upon a tee overhanging a gorge." "Work will be a matter of daily and continual pleasure." Powers of endurance could make for a sure pathway to success as long as one balances industry with recovery.

Calmness and peacefulness should be a large part of what we aim at these days, for Mars and Mercury in a quincunx holding-pattern are irritating, requiring much attention to details, and Venus approaching Saturn can make us bitter, or feeling lovelorn, as well as feeling that we have insufficient funds for desired purposes. It would not be wise to emulate "a raging bull attacking a small animal," that is, to let anger lead to verbal or actual violence, or to make oneself a victim of such ferocity. One's good fortune should hold one in contentment rather than foment overweening demands on the world.

We noticed a few weeks ago how, during the first 23 days of 2023, Mars is stuck at the degree symbolized by "a quiver filled with arrows." "An arrow in flight" grants celerity of action and power of concentration to attain intentions. However, one requires also the ability to adapt one's aim appropriately so that the arrow does not miss its mark. We may be aiming and re-aiming up to February 7 when a new Bright Hermetic Epoch could set us up for major progress, either soon after that or soon after March 7.

Mercury lingers in the degree represented by "a person climbing a steep hill, a road of steps, while an angel form at the top gives words of cheer and holds a golden crown." It may seem slow, climbing those steps, while Mercury and Mars both take their sweet time, but we should feel more secure than before.

Both Mercury and Mars are virtually motionless. This makes for ennui. I am struggling to write this. But the |difficult third| of the week, with us in a big way on Monday-Tuesday, is gone. Plans look clearer and brighter.

We remain on a "road of many steps up a hill" with an "angel form" awaiting us at the top with a golden crown.

"A man is walking beside a cow, with his hand on her back, bringing her home from the pasture at eventide." This pastoral scene was actual in my boyhood, via my Uncle Bob who kept a dairy farm. Whom in your life might you be "guiding home"?

Mars and Mercury motionless may be emulating "a great tortoise" with his patient, plodding disposition. He is endowed with "great powers of endurance, an even disposition, and contented mind." His life may "extend to phenomenal years" and in old age he is "secure from all harm." You may feel thankful for the Providence sustaining you as we proceed toward a fresh Bright Hermetic Epoch beginning February 7.

The gloom and slowness most are experiencing should diminish tomorrow, Wednesday the 18th. First, Mercury shall turn direct at 5:13a PT | 8:13a ET. It will still be moving very slowly however.

A Dark Hermetic Epoch began Dec. 12 > (Mercury Retrograde began Dec. 29 > ends January 18) > DHE ends February 7, when a new Bright Hermetic Epoch begins lasting until April 7. And that should improve even more beginning March 7 when Saturn gives up its total control of other planets by moving into Pisces.

So in some ways we are in sight of a happier plateau beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, when also the |difficult third| of this week shall be gone.

Today, Tuesday, may still seem somewhat bleak, yet we look for encouragement in the day's symbols: "An indescribable scene: chaos, confusion, dissolving views." This symbol always amuses me because it seems so accurate when it turns up. What in the world is going on here? Charubel says it could make us feel we are idiotic or insane, or that others are. But really it's a period for letting chaos sort itself out into something better, not being upset by the "dissolving views" but appreciating them as if one were viewing life through a kaleidoscope. This is appropriate for the final day of Mercury's retrogradation. What is not needed, or "in the way," shall dissolve eventually into something more congenial.

"A boat to which a submerged man is clinging for support" is the providential help of a friend rescuing one from danger. Insufficient tact or skill has gotten one into trouble, but "a friend raised up to one" saves one from sinking into the depths. There is great faith, mingled with a desire to travel.

Venus's conjunction with Saturn, active from January 14-30, is the "nobody loves me" aspect but can also be the "let's get back together" aspect when there is realistic facing of the need for mutual love. The old song "Love Hurts" captures the syndrome. Again we have "steps up a hill" which are traversed with much labor, and "an angel form" waiting at the top with a golden crown as reward for one's climbing.

< moon leaves the Via Combusta at 7:22a PT | 10:22a ET | 3:22p UT

"An old woman seated on a stool with a hooded cloak wrapped closely round her" has let herself become warped by selfishness and jealousy. She has become melancholy and misanthropic. Isolation can be painful. "Let her or him study to preserve interest and sympathy in all that is human and so escape being abandoned."

Some do not display the superficial polish of the conventional life of the city but prefer a rugged and natural life of quiet retirement and rustic wok in "a stretch of broken country with a fringe of woodland." "Off-hand gruffness of expression" veils "a kind and ingenuous nature."

How are we traversing the Mercury Retrograde period, improving somewhat on Wednesday the 18th but still Dark or Slow till the second week of February? It does indeed seem very slow to me. "A man is climbing a steep hill, a road consisting of steps." "He will labor hard and suffer much in the fulfillment of his mission." "An angel form at the top is giving words of cheer, and holds a golden crown awaiting him."

More clues about the coming week, January 14-20:

More clues about the coming week, January 14-20:

Mercury remains retrograde. Cut back judiciously on your “news” intake. How much of it is just slanted opinion? How much has been thoroughly researched? How much is wishful thinking of one political side or another? How much will vanish in a week or two, totally forgotten? How much is just an attempt of supposed newsmakers to get transient attention? Good guess: 90 per cent of it falls into one of those categories. Do something better with your time. Read a classic, or a Scripture. You will be REmembering history’s lessons as a basis for personal spiritual REsurrection.

One very good thing about Mercury Retrograde (or slow) is that we REconnect, at least in memory, with old friends or relatives. Yesterday I got a Christmas card from an old cousin and his wife and it was the nicest thing in my mailbox. Also, when a visiting friend got up to leave I framed his standing figure as a photo in my mind and felt “I want to remember him this way no matter what happens.” Then after he left tears came to my eyes. He is healthy and strong but Mercury’s retrogradation gives Time a different flavor as if we were REcalling past or future lives in this one.

Venus is moving closer to Saturn. This is poignance. That friend reported to me how he is feeling sad about a lost love he wants to recover. I feel for him in a big way. Tears of love-frustration are normal at times like this and ought not to be considered weak or sappy. They are evidence of Soul. May we all realize that love is eternal.

Weekend of January 14 -15, and coming week

\Emerging from Chaos/

Saturday: Moon in Libra

Sunday: Moon in Libra-->Scorpio

/moon goes void-of-course at 0:40a PT | 3:40a ET | 8:40a UT

until it enters Scorpio at 4:09a PT | 7:09a ET | 12:09p UT

|Karmic sobering, challenging third| of this week begins at 4:59p PT | 7:59p ET | 12:59a(M) UT

We have a coming week which is not going to be easy or comfortable. I have to speak it as I see it. Of course the purpose of these reports is to make things easier and more comfortable to bear as well as to point out opportunities. Saying "Don't do this" is one of the hardest things to do, as those know who have tried to teach practical skills. And I do not claim to be an adept at living out the astrological aspects in a happy way, only to have observed and pondered honestly for decades.

Last week we had Venus square Uranus, which I mentioned as the "end of a friendship" aspect at its worst. Better, it is the evolution of friendship through realizing and learning what one can through difficult connections with people who are good at heart no matter how irritating some of their behaviors.

This week (Saturday the 14th though Friday the 20th) that aspect continues, and is made more poignant by Venus moving along to a conjunction with Saturn. This is the "test of love" aspect. To whom are you loyal, and to whom do you want to be loyal? You can face those questions. Love is not just for the sunny days.

We all know the problems of Mercury retrograde, and they continue through the week. Sometimes the apple cart just gets upset and the fruit has to be RE-collected. Mercury turns direct on Wednesday at 13:13 UT but this will not really help much because he will be moving very slowly until the next Bright or Fast Hermetic Epoch begins on February 7. His square with Jupiter could make for hasty thinking which stumbles over itself, but his trine with Uranus could bring original insights which are liberating.

The sun's conjunction with Pluto enhances obsessions, whether trivial ones or magnificent ones. The Sabian symbol for the planet's position is "a woman reading tea leaves." There are multiple signals or signatures to guide us even in the midst of Mercury's Dark Epoch.

Friday the 13th seems more than a superstition this time. On the 12th as I write I am feeling the throes of Mercury Retrograde more intensely than I have in recent memory, with slews of things going wrong, plus a viral infection requiring me to rest for a few days. So there is no regular forecast-meditation for Friday.

Let us keep our faith in and with the Supreme. "O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever." -- Psalm 136

We have another week of Mercury Retrograde, until the 18th. How has it been for you? (It began December 29.) Mixed, for me. Major problems averted, thank the Lord, but minor ones in spades. My computer has been REfusing to work in the mornings without REstarting. Then, as if by clockwork, a high-pitched whine or screech in my neighborhood's electrical wiring began, as if often does during MR periods. Very disturbing, though it stopped at times, then started again. Finally, after REpeated attempts to contact the City Lights people, I was able to talk to someone yesterday (dear Saaba) who promised to look into it. She did, and within two hours the noise stopped and I've had RElief for more than a day. I called her today to thank her.

Lesson from that: we may need REpeated efforts to untangle things during the MR periods. But RElief is possible.

As for the planetary aspects, they may be taking a turn for the worse, for the affectionate Venus sextile Mars is diminishing as well as the gift-conferring Venus sextile Jupiter, and taking their place is the emotionally disruptive Venus square Uranus, which can be an "end of a friendship" aspect. (January 7-22.) Usually it is just a rift, healed over later, but it can be upsetting while it lasts. Today a friend told me he may end a friendship with someone. I believe that will be temporary. Grant Lewi says this aspect brings "disappointment through misplaced or frustrated affections." Countering this is the sun's sextile with Jupiter, now through at least February 5, which facilitates sociability, health, recognition and pleasure.

And, as mentioned here several times, the coming zodiacal year, March 20, 2023 to March 20, 2024, looks like a relief from many of the hassles of the current year, maybe beginning a little earlier by March 7. It's not that we should "live in the future" but that we should not be despondent if things take a while to sort out.

Message for Weekend of January 7-8, and Long-Term Outlook

Weekend of January 7-8, and Long-Term Outlook

Happy Christmas to the Eastern, Greek and Russian Orthodox!

Saturday: Moon in Cancer-->Leo

/moon goes void-of-course at 2:24p PT | 5:24P ET | 10:24p UT

until it enters Leo at 6:41p PT | 9:41p ET | 2:41a(Su) UT

Sunday: Moon in Leo

|Karmic sobering, challenging third| of this week begins at 7:13a PT | 10:13a ET | 3:13p UT (until early Wednesday)

We have dwelt on the interminable Speaker votes at length in the previous week, as related to Mercury and Mars both retrograde. As I write on Friday there is still no winner. (My personal opinion is that the 20 hold-outs are not obstructionists but that McCarthy is the obstructionist, obviously not trusted, and that he ought to step down and let the Republicans find a consensus candidate. I am not predicting that that will happen, but wish it would. If McCarthy would REtreat, the House could be REvivified.)

It seems good to turn to longer-term outlooks on the weekends:

One can cut the astrological "pie" in various ways. The Hermetic Epochs are one way, and I did that last weekend and the weekend before. Another way is whole-year charts, beginning not on January 1 but on March 20 when the sun enters Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, determined by the Spring Equinox. These are the charts which have succeeded in my research as the winners of the whole-year sweepstakes, and I gave the January 1 charts and the Winter Solstice charts equal consideration. They did not work nearly as well.

The March 20, 2022 to March 20, 2023 chart is a very difficult one. It shows Venus, Mars and Saturn all bunched together in Aquarius, Saturn's sign, and Venus in hard aspect with Saturn, also Mars in hard aspect with Saturn. These are two of the most difficult of all aspects. (The conjunctions, with the squares and oppositions, are hard aspects.) Further, it shows all three of these in a square with Uranus, planet of disruption when at its harshest.

Well, looking at most people's "bottom line" is enough to verify that. (As Venus and Jupiter fare, so fares the economy of the majority.) In 2022 the S&P went down 19%, and since March 20, down 13%. The FTX scandal-scam was just one evidence of this, but here is a fascinating story about it.

As you know, I use three different sets of clairvoyantly-derived symbols for the 360 degrees of the zodiac, 1080 in all. When I studied Sam Bankman Fried's horoscope (March 6, 1992) I saw that he has both Mars and Saturn, the two harshest planets according to the ancients, at 13Aquarius14 (appearing as 13 Aquarius in charts but as Aquarius 14 in books because the first degree of a sign is 0). Guess how Signor Borelli, the unknown Italian clairvoyant, described this degree in the 1880s more than a century before Fried was born? "A broken bridge spanning a rapid stream. Keyword: Collapse." And here is how Sepharial, also in the 19th century, elucidated that symbol: "One whose life will be beset with unforeseen dangers, and who should therefore go warily and with much circumspection into the narrow walks of competitive life. About the middle of his life there will be a great catastrophe by which he may suffer a total collapse of his affairs. He will then be in danger of liquidation and may become involved in serious trouble. While he is sure to be of considerable service to others [for a while! - CP], and may be the author of wise counsel, he will himself stand in need of help and sustenance ere his days are half completed. His future thereafter is in the keeping of Heaven." I rest my case. This is amazingly accurate.

That reading applies especially to the FTX founder because two major planets are in that degree in his birth-chart, but it applies in a minor way to everyone during this 2022-23 zodiacal year because one planet, Venus, is in that degree in the annual chart (set up for the moment of the Vernal Equinox beginning the year). Liquidation? Collapse? Fortunately it's not that bad for most of us, but it is for some, and all seem to be struggling for better sources of income. Krystal Ball of Breaking Points calls this "the golden age of the con" and many are falling for get-rich-easily schemes.

Using the same Borelli-Sepharial symbols, we have for Mars in the current year 'Two bulls fighting on the edge of a precipice' which seems to describe the Ukraine-Russia mess, the U. S. midterm elections, and the current Speaker of the House imbroglio. We have for Saturn 'A man lying wounded or sick upon the ground' which fits the "sudden death syndrome" in even hardy young athletes. There are more ominous symbols, including 'a horse and rider falling at a fence.'

It's not all bleak and the other two sets of symbols have some more positive indications to take advantage of. I do not have time here for all of that.

I must emphasize that in the short term, up to January 17, we have a friendly, loving or romantic Venus trine Mars aspect to help us.

As for the coming zodiacal year, March 20, 2023 to March 20, 2024: We don't need the symbols to see that it will be an easier and happier year. (Theoretically and philosophically, every year can be happy if we get our souls right with G*d and the cosmos.) Because rather than heavy Venus-Mars-Saturn aspects we have Venus in her own sign sextile Mars, with both in good aspect to Saturn. That is a huge difference. We looked at the symbol "Collapse" for Venus in the 2022-23 chart, in connection with FTX and SBF, so let's look at the Venus symbol in the same system for 2023-24: 'A man of benevolent countenance stands near to a cottage chopping wood. Around him are orchards well filled with fruit. Near him is a sheep grazing.' This 'denotes a person of a contented, happy disposition, a friend of Nature and well-beloved of her. He has natural goodwill. His labor its its own reward, his wealth is his own contentment, and his ambitious are fulfilled with the day. It is a degree of Heart-Wealth.'

Quite a change from the FTX-SBS "golden age of con," 2022!

The same degree in the Charubel set of symbols: 'A boat on a large lake or big river; two men are rowing in it.' 'Fond of company and of change; a speculative bent of mind and fond of adventure.'

We shall see!

Happy Christmas to all who celebrate it with the Eastern, Greek and Russian Orthodox on January 7.

Moon in Cancer

Full Moon of Capricorn-Cancer is exact at 3:09p PT | 6:09p ET | 11:09p UT

Do members of Congress, specifically the House, "believe in" Mercury retrograde? If not, why not? That began on December 29 and continues until January 18. As of this writing, they have taken nine votes to determine a new Speaker with no winner. This is not "bad," in fact it could be good, as is REview and REconsidration during any Mercury Retrograde period. That is a lesson for your own life if you are REtrogressing in appearance. REpentance is good, as is REconsideration of beliefs, data, and procedures.

Further, Mars is retrograde, which happens only once in three years or so, in the sign Gemini, the sign of Donald Trump, and he is involved in the Speaker negotiations because he supports McCarthy although some of his own most ardent supporters oppose him. Nothing seems simple during MR. Reconsideration can become re-re-reconsideration. Some even want Trump to REturn to Washington and run for Speaker himself (that official does not have to be a member of Congress). Not at all likely but it shows the accuracy and reality of the astrological phenomena of the moment. There is also an intent, on the part of the REbels, to REvise the House rules so that any Speaker can be REmoved more easily by vote of members.

Friday: 'A quiver of arrows' suggests the varied techniques of those pushing for their desired outcome in the House. It also suggests that you have your own quiver of arrows or techniques, strategies, and plans for whatever you wish to accomplish. Some of them may remain idle in the 'quiver' until the time arrives to employ them.

Speed? Not recommended, yet 'the racers are at full speed at a racecourse.' McCarthy, Donalds, Jordan, Scalise, and others in the House? Or this could be a symbol of gambling if you are attracted to that in any form, though I cannot recommend it during a Mercury- plus-Mars-retrograde period. People who are usually immune to scam artists might succumb to one during a time like this. Krystal Ball calls this "the golden age of the con."

We should not forget that Venus is forming a trine with Mars, lasting by ten degrees from January 2-16 (exact this coming Sunday). 'A woman nude is looking at her reflection in a pool of water.' There could be 'dalliance and self-love leading to complications and entanglements.' There is egotism and carnality; but also artistic tastes and abilities.

There are 'powers of expression,' maybe related to sound, whether music, poetry, felicity of speech or body language. 'A lyre is lying upon a wreath of flowers.' Some may 'enunciate in harmonious, persuasive language a new phase of philosophic truth that is subtly compelling.'

~Progress Toward Dignity~

Moon in Gemini-->Cancer

/moon is void-of-course

We do not have a Speaker of the House in the U. S. (second in line to the Presidency) although several votes were taken on Wednesday, inconclusively. (If you read Wednesday's report you will see how I more or less pointed this out with the help of the symbols.) The activist Republicans opposing Kevin McCarthy were originally supporting Jim Jordan. Both of these are Aquarians (by sun-sign), and Jordan said that he did not want the speakership but supported McCarthy! Two Aquarians sticking together, as it were. Now the rebel Republicans have turned to Representative Byron Donalds of Florida. His birth-data is not available anywhere I have looked online. But he is a good man and solid candidate, and I wish that McCarthy would give up and support him. I hope that Donalds is not just a 'token black" and a placeholder for the Republicans until they turn to someone else as a substitute for McCarthy. Notice this: In the two most recent reports I have mentioned that Saturn in Aquarius is the sole dispositor of the seven major planets until March 3. And so, McCarthy, Aquarian, seems still to be top dog, but I hope that can change. Saturn slows things down and gums up the works, from a progressive or activist viewpoint.

Thursday: The Full Moon approaches and 'a man is riding at high speed upon a well-conditioned horse.' He has a romantic life, travels and 'undertakes hardy exploits.' There could be foreign connections and opportunities. One can tame the mind and partake of instruction or supply it.

The contest for Speaker may be reflected in 'an officer arrayed much like a Chinese mandarin in an official robe of purple, gold and blue.' 'To him will be entrusted the care of high secrets and charges and he will be associated with persons of high estate. He may boast an ancient lineage plus inherent dignity and repose, endowing him ultimately with success and authority.'

Mars, not seeming to move, still gifts us with 'a quiver filled with arrows.' This could amount to 'querulous overconfidence and quixotic notions' or to 'unlimited personal capacity for rising to the issue of the moment on any level of experience.' Preparation has its own interest and value.

Yes, Mercury is retrograde and we walk on chewing gum. 'A person ascends a spiral staircase within a dark enclosure, with sunshine at the top.' 'There is much to do in life for very small returns. One is always busy yet with little to be seen for one's labor; but good luck falls to one's lot at the end of a given time-span.' That could be by January 18, or maybe February 7 or March 3. Meanwhile there are intriguing downs and ups.

Moon in Gemini

/moon goes void-of-course at 4:09p PT | 7:09p ET | 12:09a(Th) UT

In the final section of yesterday's report I mentioned how the planet Saturn dominates our geocentric skies until March 3, and then a promising zodiacal New Year (for 2023-4) begins March 20. It's not that we can do nothing until then but that our efforts have a flavor of pounding a brick wall, or laboring much for small results even though the labor is necessary. I hope knowing this will help you bear up and stay relatively cheerful. Also, of course, things are slower and more cumbersome while Mercury remains retrograde until January 18. All this is evident, for example, in the painful jockeying for the position of Speaker of the House, which looks to be slower and more complex than anytime since 1923, a century ago.

Wednesday: 'A lonely traveler in a solitary way, with a heavy burden on his back, is assaulted by ruffians.' This could mean a struggle in which one may be 'wronged out of his hard-earned pittance,' says Charubel.

Nevertheless, there is hope. 'A man is walking with bended head, leaning upon a staff.' 'He will show a steadfast resignation to the will of Heaven, and therein find consolation for griefs and sorrows. The task he preforms in life will be honorable but unprofitable. He is nevertheless equipped for a long, arduous journey and shall eventually attain his goal.'

Are you of more service to others than yourself? If it seems so, take consolation that you are a valuable member of the human race. 'A ferry boat is taking people across a wide deep stream.' In some ways you might be 'a guide or teacher of the public.'

'A quiver filled with arrows' suggests preparation more than consummation, yet this can be fulfilling in itself no matter how far ahead the use of those arrows may seem. Says Dr. Jones: 'Here are the fruits of the self-discipline and training which equip an individual with the skills for which he will have continual use.'

Moon in Gemini

We have some high-falutin' symbols. "A spacious hall like a museum; the walls are covered with symbols and hieroglyphics." This could be something unusual, symbolic and colorful which you study or observe in video or a book. The antique and the mystical have value beyond what is obvious at first.

Likewise in outer nature we have "a vista extending to a great distance; on either hand are majestic trees covered with a profusion of foliage." This is said to indicate artistic gifts and enchanting visions, plus the idealism which natural beauty fosters.

We are preparing for a new year, which shall, I think, pick up significantly beginning March 20. Meanwhile we have "a quiver filled with arrows." "There is a basic emphasis on the inalienable right of man to make demands on his fellows, or to bring to his service whatever may help him hold his place in the scheme of things."

We live in an information age which some are calling a metaverse and our 19th-century clairvoyant, Signor Borelli, hints at something even greater: "On a book stand a compass and an hourglass." "He will be disposed to the study of the laws of nature and will gain intimacy with principles of scientific and philosophic investigation. He may be the inventor of some instrument, or the discoverer of some force in Nature, by which the elements of space (compass) and time (hourglass) ae annihilated. It is a degree of Extension." While Mercury remains retrograde (until January 18) we see things in unusual patterns which can be mind-expanding in ways we would not have anticipated, yet it may be hard to know the utility of the visions granted us.

Wondering at the slowness and difficulty of things now, I studied the planetary positions more closely and see that Saturn is the sole dispositor of the other six anciently-known planets and shall be until March 3! (This condition began on December 20.) All the more reason to believe that the real New Year shall begin in March, probably more definitely by March 20. Meanwhile, we do what we can and learn the lessons Saturn teaches.

until it enters Gemini at 6:45p PT | 9:45p ET | 2:45a(Tu) UT

|Karmic sobering, challenging third| of this week continues until Tuesday at 9:50a PT | 12:50p ET | 5:50p UT

In terms of profession, job or career, most will be dealing with that not directly but through interest in its background, studying or learning something pertinent, or considering possible investment for the future.

At the outset of a new year we like to think "the sun is shining brightly in a cloudless sky," but Charubel says we could be too sanguine, liable to disappointment, "too carried away with brilliant anticipations."

And so there is no guarantee that our "arrow in flight" will reach its intended destination, yet still "a force beyond us impels us to the attainment of a certain high or distant project." Everything may depend on the proper start, through heredity and training. We require an ability to adapt ourselves in order to prevent a decline.

As for "higher" aspirations, ethical or spiritual, they are thriving. "A tripod with flames of fire issuing from a brazier" denotes "a life of adventure and hazard but honorable in the pursuit of lofty ambitions." This could be in the military or though other avenues of wide-ranging action, travel or exploration. There could be "purity of life and conquest of worlds beyond normal ken" as ambassador, consul, or spiritual researcher.

With the |difficult third| plus the moon void-of-course later in the day, things can be appropriately preparatory rather than consummatory (and many business and government offices are closed). Political activity in Washington begins tomorrow with a new Congress but of course jockeying for position is going on. We all possess "a quiver filled with arrows." This is the Sabian symbol for Mars's position for the next 23 days, because that planet is stationary and retrograde, with Mercury also retrograde until January 18. Getting a new Congress functioning with any solid consequences may feel like pulling taffy. Still, according to Marc Edmund Jones, the quiver of arrows indicates "extreme alertness to the interests and needs of selfhood, and a high competency in pursuing any and all practical ends."
