It might pay you to review what was said last weekend about the Hermetic Epoch of December 12 to February 7 . Here is more:

As for moods, they might depend more on daily lunar and other changing aspects, but for the Epoch as a whole things look quite comforting, with Venus and Mars in a trine, and Jupiter between them sextile to both. Voila! Many hopes may be fulfilled. This was already evident to me, in some small and some larger ways, a couple days after the Epoch began. 

However, through the whole Epoch Mars is either retrograde or moving very slowly, and as I said in a recent report, will be at 8Gemini9 for the first 23 days of 2023, symbolized by "a quiver filled with arrows," keyword Preparation. 23 arrows for '23? We'll try to see what that means as the days go on. 

Yes, a time of preparation, and this is a hint that a Dark or Slow Epoch can be better for both review and gradual preparation than for highly assertive and expectant direct action. The Charubel symbol for the same degree offers further light: "A labyrinth, situated in the heavens, and a fine silver thread suspended from it to the earth." "He or she will engage to do what the majority of mankind would have no patience to do, with a talent for propounding and solving conundrums, enigmatical problems, or any given theorem requiring solution." What are your areas of specialized thought, inquiry, and planning? You might succeed in these remarkably, even if direct use of your the solutions you attain is not possible yet.

The chart for the whole Epoch is both "cardinal" and "objective in function" which suggests we will be focused on relatively clear and cogent procedures and plans which will have a real effect in the outer world. 

Politics? Republicans take control of the House but not the Senate and it is too early to estimate much of anything about the 2024 Presidential race. "A cameo profile of a man in the outline of his country" could be anyone who gains either notoriety, celebrity or dignity, and of course more than one individual. 

Venus is at the Sabian degree "a performer of a mystery play." The individual and the world are interpreted to each other in very subtle ways.

Neptune at the degree "spiritist phenomena" shows that we are aware of the potentials of personal immortality. It is not a mistake to think about or imagine one might be in partial contact with the "dear departed." 

"A woman and two men on a bit of sunlit land facing south" requires decisive basic allegiances. There are competing demands for attention which can be mediated. There could be the inception of something interesting which "will bring an individual's efforts into a cohesive pattern." 

"A girl surreptitiously bathing in the nude" is "dramatizing effectively the basic characteristics and potentials of self." 

"An old man attempting vainly to reveal the Mysteries" is trying to share "the ultimate substance of selfhood." He revolts against the inertia of those around him, which "threatens the very core" of their selfhood. 

He may be the same individual as "a man turning his back on his passions and teaching from his experience." "The self assimilates itself to its own higher vision and so achieves an outer selflessness." This is serenity.

^Unfamiliar but Rewarding Country^

In case you are not up to speed (or rather down to speed), Mercury turned retrograde Wednesday (until January 18), and since Tuesday the 27th (and through Saturday, New Year's Eve), Mars stationary (seeming not to move at all from our perspective) has been at the degree "An airplane falling." And what has happened? From today's Wall Street Journal, main headline: "How Southwest Airlines Melted Down": "Prepares to REstart regular flights" and so on. Thousands of people grounded because of weather, and also, in Buffalo, 39 people died in fierce snowstorms: Fallen airplanes (or cars), I am sorry to say. In my own case, yesterday afternoon I felt very weary and needed rest, whereupon someone knocked on my door twice, upsetting me, and then a good friend knocked and I was so weary and harassed (fallen airplane) that I just had to send him away. Then my mood fell even further. Today I spent two hours (almost) waiting for computer issues to clear, REstarting twice; that had all the earmarks of a "fallen airplane." 

And so if I say "Happy New Year" I must also say, don't be surprised if New Year's Eve is chaotic or wearisome in some ways. What's going on now could prepare you for that.

Further: The "Hardy Tree" in a London cemetery fell. "The Hardy Tree was its name, although the tree knew the story it heard told about it by its many visitors was not entirely correct. Many visitors, and there were many, would stand in groups with someone up front talking loudly about how the Hardy Tree came to be." Further, Russia launched a fresh missile barrage across Ukraine. Fallen missiles are as bad as fallen planes.

Also, the symbol "An airplane falling" was itself fallen, because I had decided that I didn't want to REpeat it every day, so I used the symbol for Jupiter instead in the Wednesday report. That was a mistake. And so for the whole 23 days of Mars being stationary, turning direct, at 8Gemini9 I will be REpeating the symbol "a quiver filled with arrows" every day. 23 days of Preparation (the keyword) for 2023! Life and astrology are amazing. 

Friday: Yes, "an airplane is falling," but this could mean "the capacity of man to plunge into experience with a complete disregard of consequences, or to act in full independence of those sustainments which his fellows have accepted as limitation." (Marc Edmund Jones, Sabian Symbols)

Emerging from the wreck, one might find oneself in "A stretch of broken country with a fringe of woodland" indicating Rusticity, and "a nature rugged and natural in its expression, wholly devoid of the superficialities and polish of conventional life." He or she might seem "ungracious and uncouth" to some but "none will question his sincerity and genuineness." Being close to the soil, or cultivating it, could be more fortunate than "flying so high with some guy in the sky." "Gruffness of expression veils a kind and ingenuous nature." 

Mercury stationary, turning backward, remains at the degree "a field of ripe corn; the reapers at work 'neath the beams of the Sun." Fortune smiles with abundance in large or small but encouraging ways.

By nightfall, or sooner, one might resemble "an owl sitting in the moonlight." One has become "wise and prudent, patient and self-possessed." "Where others see nothing he will discern many indications of the trend of events." There could be "deep philosophical speculations and abstruse studies." "Occult" means "hidden" and one may center one's life and work in "things that are hidden from the common eye."

^Being One's Own Commander?^

As pointed out yesterday, Mercury turned retrograde early Wednesday and I feel it now while I am writing. At first I felt that I needed to REvise my way of writing these daily forecast-meditations in a big way. We do that during the MR. "What is going haywire and how can I fix it?" "What is lacking in my approach?" Sometimes the dissatisfaction is so intense, or the perception "My life isn't working," that people quit their jobs and flee to a Pacific Island (not recommended) or separate from a partner or join a cult. 

But the more I thought about it I realized that I need to carry on more or less as before, with perhaps less stress on the daily symbols and more stress on intuition. So you may see these reports fluctuating in style or emphasis.

Intuition? Today I thought: The big D!  Disappointment leading to the Divine. Think about that a little. We could be doing that a lot up to February 7 when the next BHE begins, and especially up to January 18 while Mercury remains retrograde. The big D.

Today (Thursday) I was thinking I had to "know" or assume or take as a working basis "Who is going to win the Presidency in 2024?" So I tried some divinatory skills (divination means literally trying to determine the Divine Will, maybe even if in a gypsy tent) asking "Ought Trump to be the next President?" No answer. "Ought Biden to continue as the next President?" No answer. "Ron DeSantis?" No answer. This was amazing. Three times in a row the same answer, namely, "No answer." To put it simply, God does not want me to know who the next president ought to be. He may be saying "Figure that out for yourself with the rest of the American people." 

This was a blow to me, because I felt that if I had an inside track on how things ought to go I could use that as a backdrop in my thinking. Now I am told that I have to figure it out on my own. The parent birds push the baby out of the nest.  

This may be relevant to you in other ways. Who is the "commanding officer" of your life? Jesus? Krishna? Mohammed the prophet? Or what political party do you affiliate with, or who is your "boss" for now in the business world? And so on. It's easy to say "I am my own man or woman" and yet it seems that in some ways we are all asked to be loyal to some leader or other, or maybe to a Principle we have discovered for ourselves. The chart for Thursday suggests such issues coming up. They are connected with the correlated question "What is my true work?" 

Now the symbols for Thursday: Perhaps "an airplane falling" means again that we can "right the dive" by taking charge over a crisis. What is the relevant evidence to be considered?

"A cross and a broken key" could be a MR factor making us feel impotent. Sepharial says we should "knock and wait in patience" rather than "enter by craft and worldly wisdom" which would be a "bad Mercury" move. "The key would break off short in one's hand." We should "restrain impetuosity and daring" while cultivating "humility of spirit" and then "the cross will not be too heavy to bear" so that we may "enter the Gates of the Temple of Wisdom." That would bring internal emancipation from stress.

"A series of bubbles floating in the air" could show that we are "mere dabblers" in the direction of "occult verities." Someone might be "a

fashionable mountebank." Or, if not superficial, we could display "a certain elasticity and expansiveness of soul rendering us reflective of the surrounding world in its sparkling and bright aspects." This could be a taste of festivity. 

Mercury hardly moving (geocentrically) is still at the degree "a field of ripe corn" indicating that somehow "fortune is smiling on us" and "an abundance is our lot." If not wealth, it is at least composure and happiness.

You know the prevailing theories concerning Mercury Retrograde, so I don't have to repeat them. But here is a summary: Things get peculiar. Some things slow down. There are "changes of pattern" in daily activity and scheduling. People disappear and then reappear out of nowhere. There is mind-wandering and REminiscence. One REminds oneself to keep up with things one tends to neglect. The past becomes freshly relevant (people are talking about and researching the hidden facts about the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, which could be crucial to the future of whatever democracy we have left.)  Psychic phenomena and synchronicity are more frequent, REvealing, and delightful. At best there can be spiritual REsurrection because That which is greater than mind is filtering into or taking over our consciousness. 

Wednesday: "A man desponding, standing on a barren plain with leaden-colored clouds overhead" represents what MR can feel like if it pulls the rug out from under us. It helps to be aware of proclivities in us which are rebuked by the current state of things so that we don't place confidence in what, if lost, brings on despondence. 

"A woman rises out of water, a seal rises and embraces her" does not represent miscegenation but a kind of marriage of "feminine receptivity" with "masculine, personal, self-seeking initiative." "Elements of soul emerge from primordial nonexistence." There is a realization of "the illimitability of experience of which anyone can take advantage." This can be invigorating.

It is easy to make a contribution to life, or those in need, because "in a field of ripe corn the reapers are at work 'neath the beams of the sun." Grain sprouts and elaborates itself. "Fortune smiles, and an abundance is one's lot."

Luna with Neptune in Pisces, both sextile Venus, could lead us to "a tankard set upon a table." We have no wish to get drunk but are "steadfast and capable," our minds "open to the reception of truth, while passions are well-regulated." We are frank, free from craftiness, with "a sincere regard for all that is simple and natural in human nature." In sympathy with the common people, some may become "teachers and purveyors of spiritual truths" whether in a vineyard, hostel or elsewhere. Sincerity is a warm, inseminating virtue.

I'm writing on Monday during a |difficult third| plus void-of-course time (most of the day) and just got out of Password Hell brought to me by Google. It was almost insufferable but finally I was able to access my old Yahoo email account to get the new password offered by Google, what a mess. There was more than that but I won't burden you with the details.

As for the Christmas Sunday and the Boxing Day Monday, they were, as reported, in the |Karmic, difficult third| and a few dozen people in the U. S. died in the cold and storm, plus general moods being down, in my observation at least. Saturn does its number during the weekly |difficult karmic third|.

As for Tuesday, it should be better than Monday but there are some hard symbols such as "a maze, indicating one fond of enigmas, spending his time in profitless researches or carried away by foolish whims. Nevertheless, possessing great ingenuity." I leave the application of this to yourself. There could be concentration and progress through savvy prevailing beyond the maze.

As for "an airplane falling" Mars was also in that degree the day of the horrendous bombing of Hiroshima, August 6, 1945. The Enola Gay did not fall but its payload wreaked havoc on humanity, killing ultimately at least 140,000. Today we can hope there will be no equivalent damage in the current wars such as Russia-Ukraine. As for yourself, the keyword is Crisis but there could be "a highly advantageous reorientation of selfhood through every issue," for one can "right the dive, thus re-establishing control of the flight as suits a conscious purpose." Through any surprise one can adhere to principle and sane judgment. 

As for seeking a haven, we should be sure it is one which will not make things worse through extravagance or incontinence. "A wineglass overturned" warns against uncontained feelings and passions, leading to reversal and undoing. One needs "the guidance of a strong and steady hand." 

Yet there could be final contentment as "a field of ripe corn; the reapers at work beneath the beams of the sun." "Very fortunate, more especially about middle life when fortune smiles on him and an abundance is his lot."

Most may feel this as a bleak day or one given to ordinary details. At worst one might feel like "a man struggling in a lake; his head rises again and again until a lifebuoy is thrown to him; finally he is saved." There could be a feeling of immolation or debt until one gets a firmer grip, or a "godsend" delivers one. 

Old, waste materials may be recycled and reused. "A plow" is a taking up of "arduous and protracted labors" which "carry one through all difficulties and beyond all obstacles" through definition of purpose, chosen effort, determination and incisiveness. With backbone one can, despite bleakness, cut out a line in life for oneself.

Are you attuned to what is in vogue, or to your own chosen conception of what is worthwhile? "A new path of realism in experience" provides "a personal and immediate participation in the affairs of an everyday world." "Weighing pros and cons in normal life relations" determines values and shows their usefulness. Constant self-analysis identifies one's true role. 

The day is not without melody. One may experience "little of guile, little of fear, with perfect confidence in those to whom one gives one's heart." "A heart is surmounted by an aureole." Even if some disappoint or dismay, you remain whole-hearted, concentrated and devoted.

Weekend of December 24-25, and Current Two-Month Hermetic Epoch: The Twitter Aviary, or Your Own

Is Saturn the planet of cold, as the ancients observed, giving it the rulership over the coldest part of the year, Capricorn-Aquarius (late December to late February)? Judge for yourself: As I write on Friday five planets are in Capricorn: The sun, the moon, Venus, Mercury and Pluto; and one in Aquarius: Saturn itself. And guess what? The headlines are full of the suffering of those afflicted by cold and storm, and airline delays. Is astrology a superstition? I have staked my reputation on evidence that it is not. 

Also, at this time of the Winter Solstice, the moon has been at its darkest phase on Friday and Saturday, and I for one feel a lack of energy and a desire to rest. Both sun and moon seem absent!  However, spiritual awareness can increase at such a time.

I'll use this dark cold day to present to you some of my latest research results. 

The Hermetic Epochs were discovered by me. The current one, Dark or Slow, began December 12.

DHE begins Dec. 12 > (Mercury Retrograde begins Dec. 29 > ends January 18) > DHE ends February 7, when a new Bright Hermetic Epoch begins lasting until April 7.

Charts for the Epochs are set up for the middle of each Epoch at the moment Mercury and the sun appear to be exactly together, or Cazimi as the ancients termed the phenomenon. That chart for the current Epoch (when Mercury appears to be going backward to join the sun) is for January 7, 2023 at 12:56 p.m. UT. 

There cannot be a "complete" analysis/prediction of an Epoch but one can try, based on past study, which I have done in connection with more Epochs than you would imagine, in great detail. Here are some highlights of the December 12 - February 7 Epoch:

Always there is a "going backward" tendency, but this can be good. A few days into the current Dark or Slow Epoch I was walking to go to a meeting, but there was much ice on the sidewalk so I turned onto a different street. When I reached the corner I heard the voice of an old friend I hadn't seen for probably a year. Then I saw that another friend, who had just reconnected with me a week earlier (also during the DHE) was chatting with him. The three of us embraced and went into Aaron's place to have a beer together. A wonderful, magical incident such as can happen while Mercury is slow or retrograde. REconnection plus REminiscence. As for the hard side of this, you have heard of it in connection with Mercury Retrograde: Delays, seemingly pointless obstructions, daydreaming, faulty recollection, tardy action, and so on. But spiritual awareness and psychic phenomena can be heightened magically. The rational is still with us, but less accentuated, while the intuitive is more accentuated.

The "magic" could be intensified happily this time because in the Epoch chart Venus and Mars are in a trine. Romance and friendship are favored, in both normal and unexpected ways. 

Let's look at the Borelli-Sepharial symbols for Venus and Mars. Venus happens to have a male-seeming symbol and Mars a Venus-seeming one. Venus: "An archer drawing a long bow." Cupid? There is "considerable faculty for teaching, prophecy, and skill in manual crafts. As a director of thought, exponent of religious teachings, as traveler, lecturer, or handicraftsman he will show himself capable and will meet with distinction. His mind will be set upon things remote from his environment (long bow). It may be said that what is remote from the sense is ever more attractive than things corporeal, and that which is afar than that which is near. Keyword: Apperception." 

Co-operating with this Venus potential is Mars at the degree: "The figure of a woman holding a globe in one hand and a scepter in the other." "There is wide knowledge and power, and a position of importance; a mind fit for governing, and a position of security after middle life. There is pride and self-love, but dignity, conscientiousness, and self-reliance. Keyword: Dominion." 

All this is welcome because in the previous Epoch chart many factors were harsh, including Venus square Saturn while opposed to the moon and Uranus, making for intense disagreement and opposition, as in the U. S. mid-term election disputes. Mars was at high focus in a bucket-shaped chart, summed up as "looking for trouble," while now the sun is at high focus in a bowl-shaped chart, summing to dignity and self-assurance. 

The Planet of Oriental Appearance is the moon, quite rare, making for a smooth ability to mother, father, teach, coach or encourage people. You may experience this from others as well as provide it to them in various ways. Luna forms the Dynamic Aptness aspect, an opposition with Pluto; the formula gives "an intense approach to obsessions" but in a smoother manner, with more perspective, than if it were a square. What obsessions?

Pluto, the slowest moving planet, was named by Marc Edmund Jones "obsession." It was at the degree 26Capricorn27 (appearing in charts as 26 but in symbol books as 27 because the first degree in charts is 0) from August 4 through December 8, and that degree according to Charubel is "two men running a race." Many were "obsessed" with the U. S. midterm elections during that whole period, with endless commentary about whether the Democrats were really the winners despite the Republicans taking back the House, and there was a run-off election in Georgia, and the Kari Lake-Katie Hobbs Arizona battle still rages. "A race" indeed. 

Now, however, and during the current Epoch, Pluto is at 27Capricorn 28, according to Charubel "An indescribable scene; chaos, confusion, dissolving views." "A marked defect of intellect, or maybe insanity or idiocy." And so I re-issue my warning about the Dark Epochs: Do not assume that you are "losing it" or going senile. It's Mercury's doing when you walk into a room and wonder why you did, or forget to buy an essential item, or drop something, and so on. And now you can blame Pluto, or his zodiacal degree, as well. You may also wonder frequently if associates or strangers have gone berserk. Yet "an indescribable scene" can sometimes be exhilarating even to the non-perverse. 

But wait a minute. The glory or curse of the degree-symbols is that there are three very good sets, and they sometimes contradict each other, giving latitude in judgment. The Borelli-Sepharial symbol for Pluto now is "A sextant and compass." "Learning and rectitude make one a reliable and useful guide to others. One is a cardinal person who cannot fail to become famous. There is study of navigation, astronomy, exploration or mathematics. There are successful ventures. One will never lose his way, nor fail to attain his end, for all undertakings will be regulated by rigid and exact principles and carried out with precision. It is a degree of Definition."

One might say that we are trying to cure the Charubel symbol by the Borelli one, overcome utter chaos, which continually threatens, by means of definitive principles. 

Then there is the Sabian symbol for the same degree: "A large aviary." The common sparrow may seem to jump chaotically, yet the rara avis knows what she or he is doing. We tolerate the "other birds" even when they are of a different or seemingly incompatible species. 

Oh, is this Twitter?! Elon Musk tried to be the wise owl moderating the aviary but now says he will turn over his job to any cuckoo foolish enough to volunteer. 

Or if you are not in the Twitter aviary, you have neighbors, or a group you attend, or family and friends, and this is your Community (the keyword). "The administration of human potentialities on the social level is self-fulfillment." We, like Elon, look out over those with whom we associate and see "an indescribable scene; chaos, confusion, idiocy." Then we look again and find ways of defining or regulating all that with "a sextant and compass." Good luck, Elon.

This is in accord with Charubel's symbol for the sun-Mercury conjunction in the Epoch chart: "A man with a large pair of scales in the act of weighing." "He will like working with weights and measures and be apt in matters of detail." The Sabian symbol is sweeter: "A girl surreptitiously bathing in the nude." "There is an irresistible desire of all life to strip back to essentials, and gain self-renewal by some immediate and close intimacy with the accepted roots of all-being." "The human body is a temple of the spirit, an archetype representing the total potentiality in a personal existence." Through "psychological renunciation" or "immersion" we "achieve a new dimension of conscious reality." 

Senior Borelli symbolizes the same degree as "A lyre lying upon a wreath of flowers," representing, according to Sepharial, "remarkable powers of expression." "By the power of poetry or music one will persuade where others cannot compel by force." "One's nature will be docile, tractable, and inoffensive. One will be constant in attachments, undergoing tests of fidelity and emerging therefrom victorious and undismayed." "One might enunciate harmoniously and persuasively a new body of doctrine or phase of philosophic truth."

The Sabian symbol for Saturn's position is "A man turning his back on his passions and teaching from his experience." The keyword is Serenity.

"Two men in fierce strife" does not have to be literal but could be two facets of oneself in conflict until they find a way of reconciliation. At worst there could be deliberate creation of discord, "opposing all and everything." Better, there is a reaching out to harmonize opposite viewpoints. "A good and an evil angel stand together silently." 

"A spacious hall like a museum, the walls covered with symbols and hieroglyphics" facilitates "curious studies" in the realm of the antiquarian or mystical. Personal dream life mingles with the dream life of humanity.

"A serpent coiled around an uplifted beacon" represents "a mind unusually wise, subtle and profound." There is genius but also prudence and circumspection. Attention could be drawn to diplomatic service, law, or governmental administration. "Many will follow the light of his leading" in order to overcome ambivalence about significant issues.

"A new path of realism in experience" accepts things as they are rather than fretting about them. A reassignment of one's energies and plans may be happening while Mercury slows down, to be retrograde from Thursday the 29th through January 17th. One tries one and then another way of doing things, weighing pros and cons, with demonstrated usefulness as the standard. Where I am, the snowfall of Monday-Tuesday, which were the two basic days of the |harsh third| of this week, ended on Wednesday and the sun is out. This system which I discovered decades ago, and which no other astrologer seems to know about, works exactly. Will we have a "white Christmas"? Maybe, because the |hard or inclement| third of next week begins on the 25th. Some people like the cold and snow. 

Thursday: "A lofty building, with nave and massive pillars on each hand" indicates an appreciation of the sublime in architecture, plus deep feelings for the sacred or antique. The maturity of the sun in Capricorn is fortifying our judgment.

"A spacious hall like a museum; the walls are covered with symbols and hieroglyphics." The antique, curious, and mystical get our attention, the salvific fullness of a culture fostering us. 

There is recommittal to instruction, or mental work, whether one is instructed or instructor or both. "A man riding at high speed upon a well-conditioned horse" could be riding a real horse, a vehicle, or his own trained mind.

Jupiter, while Sol is at the first degree of Capricorn, is at the first degree of Aries: "A woman rises out of water, a seal rises and embraces her." "This is completely unconditioned potentiality as it may be grasped on the practical side of life." "There is implicit emphasis on the mutual interdependence of the emotional and purposeful aspects of self. The keyword is Realization."* When the sun comes to this first degree of the zodiac, on March 21, 2023, we shall enter what I believe shall be a happier year than the one which began last March.

The aforesaid period of this week produced (a) difficult weather, including snow where I live, and (b) a 6.4  earthquake in northern California at 2:30 a.m. just a few hours before the exact center of the |difficult third|. I have noted often, in these reports, that there is more rain, snow or cold during these |difficult third| times. Also a friend told me how a friend suffered a bus damaging her car this morning (Tuesday as I write). I report these every week to help you navigate the difficult periods by building up faith and hope, for moods are likely to plummet. The next |karmic third| comes beginning the 25th, ending mid-day on the 27th. The Christmas Angels have extra work to do.

Wednesday: One symbol for the day of the Winter Solstice, the first degree of Capricorn, is "a man standing on a rocky eminence with arms folded, in a contemplative mood." He is well-positioned and "self-possessed; he has entire confidence in his own abilities and in the cause he may have espoused. Generally, he is right."

Likewise "a Topsy saucily asserting herself" has confidence that her importance to her master or mistress will shelter her from serious rebuke. "Every individual must maintain a balance between the compulsions of the social milieu and exercising his or her fledgling wings on every possible occasion." Taking calculated risks of disapproval aids personal growth.

"A guide and teacher of the public" is like "a ferry boat taking people across a wide deep stream." He or she is faithful in providing service to others far more than to himself or herself. Yet the resulting repute is a reward.

If the Christmas spirit is surging we may look up to see "a soft cloudy cumulus upon a bright horizon." We may display "a kind, pliant and sympathetic nature" while "receiving favors from Fortune as the friend and associate of those who have influence and power in the land." The keyword Mollience means that "one's fortunes will lie in smooth places, and with intelligence plus gentleness of nature, one will be regarded with favor by all who come in contact."

"A hare," responding to the Dark Hermetic Epoch (until February 7) and the moon's position in Scorpio where it is uncomfortable, is cultured yet timid, has energy and ability but could lose his way though diffidence in asserting himself along "the direct and honest course in life." He needs to develop clear cognition, perseverance and patience rather than just hide in a burrow. 

Scorpio Luna-placement plus the |difficult third| can make people ultra-critical or sarcastic. They see what is wrong, stirring up popular beliefs while exposing fallacies and imperfections. Pugnacious, they may be admired, but not sympathized-with or adhered-to. Angular and incisive, their criticism can be valid if not merely subjugating people maliciously. 

When resting from all this, one might appreciate "a rug placed on a floor for children to play." If not laziness this is an opportunity for refining talents or skills, in the groping way of children. "Comfort and everyday convenience" facilitate self-discovery. Children as creations create. 

"Within a dark enclosure" - these winter weeks - "a person is ascending a spiral staircase with sunshine at the top" - is working through the cold and dark, busy but with little gain, until at last "good luck falls to his lot," maybe by January or late March. Yet Christmas brings its own beneficent fortune.

"A tortoise" is patient and steady. Tasks seem trivial, and unending toil not dismaying. "In spite of all obstacles he will attain to the position he has set out to gain for himself." It might be said that even complacency has its place.

However there is also an impetus to speed at "a racecourse." Yet the bookmaker might resemble the  tortoise, not being in the race himself but considering the residue of horse-statistics as a gambler. He wants to be a prophet on a small scale, and to do that has to remember what is critical in his calculations.

"A Topsy saucily asserting herself" could be impressionable to the point of speaking out impudently in response to her mistress's demands. She risks what she is to become something more. She grows as she takes advantage of every situation, balancing social compulsions against her right to be herself. 

Despite the |difficult third| and the Via Combusta we could be aspiring and adventurous, restless for action on a wide scale. We could "light up dark places and devastate ancient sites in the quest for new food for the mind." The symbol is "a tripod with flames of fire issuing from a brazier." Some appear to be "ambassadors, consuls, spiritual researchers or explorers." Yet restless aspiration, if wise, realizes its temporal limits.

The day has positive indications, yet "a man is beneath the paw of a lion rampant." This suggests "danger of falling under the reproach of one's king or ruler." In order to please important people in your life you need to overcome "lack of stability and want of purpose." That is, be stable and purposeful. That brings restitution of one's standing. 

A way to do this is to emulate "a man with a large pair of scales in the act of weighing." Weights, measures, and details are interesting, and attention to them brings fulfillment. The psychology of this is significant, as if knowing quantitative factors reassures you that patterns are reliable.

"A roll of parchment, sealed, lies across a scepter." The parchment contains reasonable retrospection, which prepares one to do well with responsibilities. There can be secrecy, caution, and self-reliance as factors in one's life-work. One rises to positions of authority through service. 

"A great musician at his piano" is sending forth musical archetypes for humanity in a gracious manner derived from much practice. His creative achievement provides "a couch of pure white flowers" for his audience to rest upon. Maybe holiday music is paramount. "Caroling, caroling, caroling . . ."

One of the RE words we experience during a Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch is REminiscence and sometimes REstoration of friendship or connection. This past week two old friends I haven't connected with in months restored our relationship in a very positive way. The same might be happening for you. 

Friday: Another thing that can happen is what happens even more during the Mercury REtrograde period at the center of the Dark Epoch, which will be December 29 through January 17. Even now one might feel possessed of "a cross and a broken key," which indicate "abortive enterprises" which could lead to discouraging "loss of reputation." "Where he should knock and wait in patience he will essay an entry by craft and worldly wisdom, and even as h turns the key in the lock it will break off in his hand." "If he should cultivate humility of spirit, haply his cross will not be too heavy for him to bear. Then he may enter the Gates of the Temple of Wisdom." 

There could be worse mischief. "A lonely traveler in a solitary way, with a heavy burden on his back, is assaulted by ruffians." There is a struggle for existence or a feeling that one cannot succeed. "Everything is against me." We need strong faith in the goodness of the Supreme, sure to rescue us if we have hope and appreciation of our blessings.

Whatever is incomplete can be completed by artistry. "A great musician at his piano" "expands the dimension of being" for his listeners through his splendid accomplishment. "Creative assurance contributes enduring overtones to human understanding" and overcomes loneliness whether through one's own achievement or someone else's. 

The day is not without privileges. "Three cups of wine standing on a table in the form of a triangle" could represent "excessive indulgence" or else "enthusiasm in matters spiritual and mental." "Mental intoxication is allied to the higher nature" as long as there is moderation.

It is not obvious what "an Eastern town" might mean. One might think of places east of one's present location and feel an undercurrent which has meaning. Was there a rupture with someone in such a place you would like to repair?

Is there disillusionment? One might emulate "an eagle carrying its prey in mid-air," engaging in "prolonged cogitations and solitary musings." One might feel "isolated and misanthropic" yet feed on "ethereal and spiritual food" which "strengthens the spirit in lonely meditations." 

Yet "never less alone than when alone," so there could be "a conversation by telepathy." Your friendships seem to have shrunk, yet some are alive on hidden planes or "the transcendent level on which human experience has its truest focus." You are part of a "fabric of invisible sympathies and co-operations." What all long to hear is intimated without speech.

We have entered a Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch (until February 7) and Mars remains retrograde. Factors of normal life such as the stock market may go in strange or unpredictable directions. There may be depletion or a reduction of inventory. Yet "a ship is in full sail on the midst of the ocean." Change and travel could be felicitous. Even if things seem unsettled, trading could be gainful.

If one feels worried or uneasy one may be like "a person at the bottom of a deep ravine, with lamp in hand, looking for something." Actual mineralogy or geology may appeal to some. For most of us this is a quest that overcomes anxiety, reassuring ourselves that we have not lost anything essential.

In fact, says Charubel, we may own more than we realize, such as a neglected inheritance. "One's ancestors must have been of a high order" with "large possessions" one could be enjoying. Probably these are the invisible possessions of talents, virtues and gifts of the genetic code, symbolized by "a spacious park with a baronial mansion in the background." One might feel the impressions of a lost or to-be-recovered home of rustic luxury.

In his ancestral home a boy gazed upon and cherished the impressive face sculptured on and adorning the mountain he saw every day, and then grew into its resemblance. This is Hawthorne's story The Great Stone Face. We subconsciously assume ourselves to be something and then become it. "Destiny is character as it most persistently constitutes itself." 

Another name for this could be Devotion, if it is accompanied by affections centered on a single object steadfastly. "A heart surmounted by an aureole." There is "little of guile, little of fear, and perfect confidence in those to whom one gives one's heart." Even if somewhat disappointed in their response, one "succeeds where others have failed" because of whole-heartedness and concentration.

"Two arrows crossed" could indicate a scuffle you are involved in to protect your own interests. There has been temerity or aggression on one side or the other. Contention and strife set some against others in vying for public favor. Some, including you, may be viewed as eccentric whether they are or not.

"A man inspecting horses" could apply literally if you are a rancher or otherwise involved with horses. More likely it means you are uncertain of the value of certain purchases or investments and so are learning to be a good judge of them. That will protect your interests. 

Jealousy can get people trying to influence someone through underhanded or occult methods. When feeling helpless one attempts extraordinary means toward one's ends, such as consulting a gypsy. But "a conversation by telepathy" can bring deeper and more fulfilling resolutions on "the transcendent level on which human experience has its truest focus." "There are illimitable ties between each individual and every one of his fellows, providing the fabric for invisible sympathies and co-operations" (paraphrased from Marc Edmund Jones). Wonderful awareness can be transmitted through subtle intimation. 

Beginning from "an open boat on an uncharted ocean" one follows clues of self-protection until one reaches "a small cottage with wide-open door." The owner, tenant or manager is hospitable and generous, kindly and warm-hearted. Still, he or she, and oneself, should beware of "imposition or theft" even while "showing much sympathy for others and compassion for their weaknesses and foibles."

^More Harmonious Epoch Begins^

A new Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch begins at 3:32a PT | 6:32a ET | 11:32a UT, lasting until February 7

That new Epoch looks to me like a good one. Actually, all are "good" in the metaphysical or spiritual sense, but if "good" means easy and relatively pleasant I believe we are in store for a happy time. 

The Epoch ending, from October 17 through December 11, was a tough one. I measure the planetary aspects in these Epoch charts from their position at the center of each Epoch, when Mercury conjoins the sun; this time that is January 7-8. And so for the entire Epoch, Venus is in some sense both trine Mars and sextile Jupiter, an excellent omen for harmony, friendship, and smooth rather than "tested" love. 

In the previous Epoch the degree-symbols for the special chart at its center were most accurate in the Borelli-Sepharial version, so let's compare a few of them with those symbols for the Epoch beginning today.

Sun and Mercury, together: Old Epoch: "A battered hulk lying upon the seashore." "Winds of adversity, rudderless drifting upon troubled waters; misery and abandonment." New Epoch: "A lyre lying upon a wreath of flowers." "Remarkable powers of expression and persuasion. A poet or musician, or one who in the gentler offices of lie will show considerable talent. Constant in attachments, emerging from tests of fidelity victorious and undismayed. Capable of enunciating language that is harmonious, persuasive and subtly compelling."

Mars: Old Epoch: "A market place in which several young men are in dispute, asserting their respective opinions by the use of cudgels." "A stubborn, willful nature, litigious and quarrelsome, of few sympathies, jealous and revengeful. Dangers. Contest." New Epoch: "The figure of a woman holding a globe in one hand and a scepter in the other." "Wide knowledge and power; a position of importance; a mind fit for governing; a position of security by middle life. Some pride and self-love, but dignity, conscientiousness, and self-reliance.  Dominion."

Monday may not seem ebullient with these good new trends because it's the peak of the |difficult karmic third| of this week; still they should be noticeable in some encouraging fashion.

"A man desponding, standing on a barren plain, with leaden colored clouds overhead" is one of the symbols for this last day before a new Hermetic Epoch begins Monday. It denotes "gloom, uneventfulness, and monotony." Better things are coming, but today monotony could be used as a background for profound and elevating meditation.

"A serpent coiled around an uplifted beacon" is an emblem of wise, subtle thinking within the realm of any art or science, or any governmental or administrative field. The keyword is Illumination. "Many will follow the light of his leading."  

"Two Dutch children talking" may be having a childlike and simple conversation, yet it clarifies everything and "facilitates a more effective grasp of life on every practical or everyday level." 

We may enter "a garden of many-hued flowers" where we discover multiple friends and admirers. We are attracted to the beautiful in nature and humanity, and probably in holiday decorations. We are "surrounded with elements of concord and amity."

"A butcher" is obviously not a vegan or vegetarian, nor a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Charubel says he is "conducting a sheep into the slaughter-house" and is "selfish, crafty and cruel" and "unfortunate to those with whom he may have to do." 

"A serpent surrounded by a circle of fire" is "resentful and passionate." He may "find himself in a beleaguered city, or in a cruel distraint from which he will escape only with some hurt to his person or fortunes." Or, we might be captive only to our own tortuous tendencies.

Who is to blame? "A woman suffragist haranguing" thinks she knows. She is really anyone of either sex protesting actual or perceived injustices. There are real differences in points of view about most issues among people of good will. The "suffragist" of any cause is "determined to expand every potential of being and take part in every possible detail of world-wide reconstruction." 

And so there could be happy outcomes such as "a man and woman standing face to face, their hands clasped." There are felicitous combinations of contrary natures. "Genial, friendly and sociable qualities" make for "ties of domestic and social life constituting a sum of much possible happiness."

At the other, manic extreme, some might present the visage of "a face painted with grotesque scrolls, and surrounded by a tangled mass of hair." There could be eccentricity or grotesqueness, but also genius. An artist's atelier looks like a mess but is fostering creativity.

"A very small unpretentious window in the wall of a massive tower" denotes one who is "independent of external aids, ever happy among the offspring of his own genius. Such persons never seek display and are creators, not imitators."

0 It seems to me that people are in a frenzy. That is, relative to whatever "normality" may be. Ukraine-Russia, Iran-versus-freedom, CCP-versus-freedom, U. S. midterm fighting between parties and within parties. That's just on the political scale, but I see it also on the personal level. I seem to be staying away from groups where people just don't understand one another, whether or not the misunderstanding develops into open conflict. As I have assured you, things may be easier beginning next Monday December 12 when a new Dark Hermetic Epoch begins. Sometimes "dark" means the comforts of bedtime or sweet dreams (as well as some backtracking or re-assessment of one's plans, etc., all the RE words). This time that lazier Epoch, extending to February 7, could be calmer and sweeter than the previous two months of intensity (October 17-December 11). More about that later.

1 Thursday: Meanwhile five planets are at critical degrees, while Luna's aspects suggest differences of opinion, and "a woman suffragist is haranguing." That  could also indicate, these days, LGBTQ protests, racism accusations, and so on, any kind of indignation against actual or perceived injustice. Rights can be "substantiated with a reasoned conviction." We can work together through "a broad extension of common or community functions."

2 Unless we are as timid as "a hare" who is cultured and has moral force plus physical agility but could lose his way. Though he has "a strong sense of the direct and honest course in life" he also has "extreme diffidence in asserting that sense or conviction." Such inefficacy seems to require more boldness as a remedy.

3 A side benefit of Mars opposite the sun, both at critical degrees, could be a burst of vitality, so that some will resemble "a gigantic dragon tree belonging to the Canary Islands." They recuperate quickly and live to be very old. One has unsuspected reserves of strength.

4 An easy-going side of things comes from Jupiter's continuing presence with Neptune in Pisces, sign of sympathy but also of laissez-faire. "A little boy in a state of nudity is blowing bubbles." Doing little harm and little good, such an individual is innocent and seemingly immortal, amusing himself or herself as he or she pleases. 1 One might feel like "a person entering a dark tunnel." This could be bad or good: Bad if, as Charubel says, "one will go wrong in life if there be no saving influences in operation. A most unfortunate and hopeless degree this." However, there are always "saving influences in operation": "The Lord turns to hear the prayer of the destitute, and does not scorn them when they pray." --Psalm 102. The "dark tunnel" could be a period of rest and then it might be helpful.

1> Or this might represent what happened to some who trusted FTX and Sam Bankman-Fried. I hope they will get out of their Bahamas tunnel. "Mr. Sam Man, bring me a dream, Yes! Mr. Bank Man, bring me a dream! (Till I am Freed)."

2  At the Full Moon we appreciate mental landscapes, and our minds soar, perhaps toward "a lofty building, with nave and massive pillars on each hand." Mars is in Gemini, sign of the hands and duality. We could appreciate "the sacred and the antique" because Mars is retrograde, joined by Luna today. Christmas brings thoughts of the sacred.

3 "A tortoise" is patient and steady. To him "all tasks are trivial, so he is not dismayed by the prospect of unending toil." He could enter and pass through that "dark tunnel" with steadfastness and endurance. Patiently "he will attain to the position he has set out to gain for himself."

4 "The Great Stone Face" celebrated in Hawthorne's story is "Destiny as character persistently constitutes itself" for the boy grows to resemble the ideal face, carved into a mountain, which he cherishes. "Self-integrity" has "an irresistible impact on the course of events."

0 Long-term: I have mentioned how the zodiacal year beginning March 20, 2023 looks milder and happier than the current year. As for the Hermetic Epochs, about two months long, the one beginning on December 12, next Monday (until February 7), looks happier than the current one winding down, even though it shall be a Dark or Slow Epoch. People have been frustrated all over the world by politics, tyranny and sometimes violence, or the effects of shameless greed and sometimes malfeasance. I don't want to be Pollyanna but I believe something better is on the way, if we accept and work with windows opening.

Yet "the head of mentality" can also be something salutary such as the development of over-all vision and "spiritual or eternal fellowship," appreciative sister-brotherhood. 

2 People who seem like actors or mimes may resemble "a mask representing the face of a hound," a friendly creature who is kind and sympathetic. To express or invoke Christmas cheer we sometimes have to put on an act until the felicitous spirit takes over. 

3 "A large telescope pointing heavenward" could be literal for for those involved in astronomy or space exploration, or it could refer to study of astrology for those drawn in that direction. Charubel says it might  also indicate the gift of clairvoyance.

4 "A man is standing alone in a dark and gloomy valley. A ray of brilliant light comes direct from the heavens on the crown of his head." "This denotes one who will have a mission to execute; a cyclic man, not a time man; one who lives a life beyond his day; not always understood." The "dark gloomy valley is maybe the end of the year, and the "ray of light" the increasing solar radiance once we pass the Winter Solstice on the 21st. And then the Star of the Magi.

1 "Medical men engaged in a post-mortem examination" probably means coming to terms with some errors or mistakes, your own or someone else's, and looking for a way to assure they do not happen again. 

2 "The head of health dissolved into the head of mentality" is a suggestion that we need to remain focused in the physical as well as the mental realm, by getting sufficient exercise and activity for example. On the positive side, developing mentality can be "a capacity to live the lives of all men and women in imagination and appreciation." Oriented in an over-all vision, we maintain stamina physically and mentally.

3 Intellect has its value even when aswim in "a quantity of books and papers in disorder." A professor's or inveterate reader's desk? Literature, history and science may be studied and then used in novel ways. One might have "a facile power of invention or romantic fancy." Does literature exist for itself or for the development and cultivation of better, happier living in a broader consciousness? 

4 "Three cups of wine stand upon a table in the form of a triangle." Just some Christmas cheer? Sepharial says this is the "mental intoxication" of one who will "follow out his projects regardless of consequences." The "carnal appetites could bring debauchery" unless there is moderation. Yet the "wine" at best could represent higher spiritual enthusiasm.

1 Symbols for the day are tough. "A broken tree struck by a lightning flash" warns against "abortive projects, vain ambitions, and unfortunate relationships." 

2 "A portcullis guarding the entrance to a prison" suggests the dire fate awaiting some, such as perhaps Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX fame (though I suspect he will avoid that fate because of the influential politicians he bought off openly). (Actually, looking at his horoscope, I do not believe he is a villain or fraudster but merely over-optimistic, a victim of extravagant hopes.) For most of us this can mean a day of "moving in narrow limits" or "seclusion and separateness of life." 

3 A cure for separateness could be interest-based associations. "Two Chinese men talking Chinese" in a Western setting are finding common ground missing from ordinary contacts in their adopted nation. Likewise you could connect with someone who "speaks the language" of a specialized area of interest.

4 "A beautiful star resembling the planet Venus shines brighter and brighter, then suddenly disappears." Charubel says this can be a "poet, painter or musician" whose demise comes early, such as Elvis Presley, Robert Schumann, Vincent van Gogh or Kurt Cobain. We value immensely those who give forth prodigally of a divinely-endowed gift as long as they can.

1 Luna’s trine with Venus is good for social connections, yet symbols suggest that that lady (and her counterpart in males) may be in trouble, probably because she remains in an opposition with Mars. Yet things seem upbeat on the surface: "A fair woman is sporting herself on a couch." Yet Sepharial warns that this is "the index of a mind given to the delights of the senses, voluptuous and sybaritic, self-indulgent and indolent, yet ambitious of honors and wealth. The pleasures of the senses will prove a delusion and a snare leading into ineptitude." 

2 And so there is "a human heart besieged by resentment and disappointment." "Love divorced from discretion and good judgment" descends into jealousy and bitterness. There are forlorn hopes, and loving without power to evoke response. One ought not to become "cramped and misanthropic." 

3 One remedy is casual friendship with kindred souls, such as "two Chinese men talking Chinese." In an American context, these two are different by background from the mass and so share their uniqueness. Apart from racial or national distinctions, the symbol suggests "exclusiveness on the intellectual side" plus "co-operation with fellow enthusiasts in various areas of special interest." There is "effective mobilization of self and others for life's more specialized objectives."

4 "A giant of monstrous dimensions" is "a prodigy of some kind; maybe in stature or maybe in mind" or talent. This could be yourself, or someone who gets your attention. Stand-out individuals enrich our lives without necessarily attempting to do so.

^From Escape to Mastery^

1 Let's give thanks if we are not in a war zone or a nation dominated by a tyrannical, rights-denying government. We should not take for granted our relative freedom. Many around the world have to cope with "a tiger crouching as in the act of assault." This could be someone or some government which is "treacherous and aggressive, seeking his ends with subtly and securing them by force. There is both diplomacy and assertion, met best with reserve and firmness." There can be enemies and dangers. Strategy without ethics may not help.

2 However, "A big white dove, a message bearer" can be a sign of divine favor enabling us to know when to act and what to do (to escape the travails of ~1).

3 Then, happily, we could be like "a ship in full sail," enjoying change or proposed travel, able to trade and prosper even in unsettled conditions.

4 Grasping the ultimate of "things mental and spiritual" may seem the work of a lifetime, but there are moments when one's command of things seems complete. "Two triangles interlaced, with a third superposed" is an ensign of Mastery of physical, mental and spiritual domains.
