\October 1 Listen-and-Run Music Reviews by Cosmic Piper/
[The forecast for Saturday has already been posted, beneath this.]
Today I spent time perusing a musical event in Seattle called Decibel involving electronica musical groups. I listened to some of them on the Internet, and earlier groups who originated their tradition, and penned the following comments:
Kraftwerk’s “Trans Europe Express”: a fascinating number, “song” if you will, piece of early electronica though with human voices, which I was told is an example of the best of the genre, at least a very popular one. It is okay.
“Cars” by Gary Numan is okay also. “Okay” from me in regard to current music means “not bad” or “pretty good” which is really high praise. But the constant slapping or cracking sound in this is overbearing after a while and too repetitive and not music. Ugh. Goodbye Gary.
“Love is the Drug” by Roxy (1975) is better. Also repetitive, too much, but bearable. Is “bearable” all we can ask from this kind of music? This might be called early electronica, with singing. The track ends with a kind of Beatles uplift. A confusion of genres?
“Bizarre Love Triangle” by New Order (1986) is more to my liking. It has a disco feel to it, danceable. Kind of sweet. I applaud.
More “early electronica” from 1975: Brian Eno and “Spirits Drifting.” Not only bearable but interesting. A little spooky. Contemplative music, not intended for dancing unless you are a “spirit” in a particular sense of the word.
Pet Shop Boys say “It’s a Sin” (in 2003) to be evocative, bouncy, danceable but brooding. Self-guilt as delicious display. But of course it is really a satire on religious education which makes everything seem a sin. I sympathize. Very artfully done. No hatred in it, just endless irony. As if all aspiration beyond one’s “sinful” self were irony, as well as all indulgence of said self. Yet it remains oddly religious in tone, mocking religion perhaps but equally mocking any escape from it.
Kraftwerk have lost me with their 1978 “The Robots.” Again irony: “We are the Robots.” But of no musical interest to me.
Prototype 1 by Derrick May (2002) is like sounds in a train yard. Enough is enough.
Oh No by D. O. P. (1992) is like listening to one fairly good bar of music, say Bach, over and over again for 6 minutes. Why?
“The Orange Theme” by Cygnus X almost goes into classical harmonies, in fact does at certain moments, only to pull itself back as if embarrassed. “No classical harmonies here, we are Electronica!” I would call it quasi-musical. Still going after 6 minutes, almost done. Too repetitive. Though it repeats a couple of good ideas, it does not develop them.
Zomby’s “Daft Punk Rave” is not worthy of Daft Punk, who can be very good at their best (not often enough). “B with Me” by the same group is meaningless to me, D or E to me. What would one expect from a band calling itself Zomby with a purple demon on the album cover?
“Take a Drink from my Hands” by Hammock (2003) is deep-mood contemplative, approaching religious. But it faded out for me before the end of two minutes. However, I held on and by 3 minutes it again had some interest; before 4 minutes it seemed there was nothing more it could do to revive a semblance of life; by 4:19 it seemed dead, but struggled on; repetitions of the theme had no poignance or thrill; by 5 it ended and nobody cared.
Ulrich Schnauss is mildly interesting, but really, “A Strangely Isolated Place” (album) is what it feels like and I don’t need to go back there.
Now to random music which might be playing in Seattle in the month of October 2011:
Black Star, comprising Mos Def and Talib Kweli: It’s their particular street-rap stuff, okay if you like it. “Consider me the entity within the industry without a history” maybe sums it up; or “an instinct leaving suckers extinct.” Clever rap, meaningless music.
“Swoon” by The Chemical Brothers is very good (2010). Interesting music which keeps alive despite its repetitive frills. Oh well, at 4:22 I am getting tired of it and there’s another whole minute: “There’s nothing else” we are told repeatedly. “Just remember to fall in love,” and when you do, don’t play more than three minutes and a half of this track or the love might even become boring, perish the thought. Swoon between three and four minutes, and turn off the music.
“Animal Rights” by Deadmau5 is novel, it keeps me interested up to 2:56 anyway. Now the endless repetition is getting dull. It just doesn’t stop, or change enough to be interesting. No. At 3:38 I want to turn it off. Now it is worse and worse, sounding like someone with gastro-intestinal problems, at 4:15. Two minutes to go? Not for me.
“Lex” by Ratatat starts out well, swaying, swerving, enlivening.
Crystal Castles I can recommend, listening to one of their tracks, though I am proofreading a lesson by Marc Edmund Jones at the same time so won’t comment in detail. This is interesting music one might want to enjoy in the background, uplifting even.
Chromeo are very good. I don’t know how to describe them. Musical, melodic, harmonic and bouncy. But distinctively 20-ten music rather than 00 or 90 music. They stay interesting. And the track I’m listening to now knows when to quit, at 2:49, when it ran out of ideas. A gracious ending.
I know when to quit too.

You are hopeful and intuitive, maintaining optimism even if certain minor matters or plans collapse so that you have to find something different to replace them.

It looks like the best social or party day of the week. It was a long wait!
At the same time, the presence of the major transiting planets with Saturn in Libra suggests a sometimes brooding, reclusive trend, which probably will be overcome fairly soon by some felicitous interaction. It might be that your social life will be much better if you first spend time alone straightening out your inner life through introspection, prayer, meditation, spiritual study or whatever helps you attain composure and poise.
However things go, a major combination of excellent lunar aspects, offsetting the long-term difficult ones (which remain in the background), suggest that you can overcome any mood, diffidence, or anxiety and go ahead toward what your heart desires, finding happy cooperation somewhere, somehow, with someone.

A melancholy but not necessarily depressed mood accompanies the moon's square with Neptune (from Scorpio to Aquarius). You may feel you need to earn the respect or appreciation of younger people.
There is a trend toward peaceful contemplation, yet a fiery sense of impatience within it. The glorious hopes you contemplate, and their higher-plane realities, inspire intense aspirations you would like to fulfill through action.
(I was either right or wrong when I said the moon would be void-of-course today. With all the squares among the planets, those who want to reform the world are with us and speak up. You will hear schemes for proposed laws or reforms. I agree with the libertarians that there are too many laws, and increasing them leads to profit for no one but lawyers and judges. Yet I agree with the Left that some environmental laws and some social safety nets are very necessary. John Dewey explained a simple fact decades ago, that there is no absolute principle by which we can decide whether a given law is necessary, only experience and its results, plus the best judgment we can summon. But, in general, we risk becoming not a lawless but a law-bound, law-entagled, law-stifled society. Simplifying the tax code, which benefits only those who can afford lobbyists and lawyers, would help enormously, and cutting the government pensions of some who enjoy both them and social security. (But when a right-wing agenda would cut into their own bottom line, Rightists become selective Leftists in a hurry. As many have pointed out, the U. S. military is a Leftist organization, a self-contained socialist state supported by the taxpayers.)
We do need to care for the poor and the sick, and protect animals from cruelty, and eliminating such protections, as some on the extreme Right want, would put us back a century or more in terms of human compassion and ordinary decency.
Your spiritual heritage, which neither I nor anyone can define for you, is with you when you give it attention.

There is a sense of things about ready to pop in your favor, but held back. It seems that patience is stretched to the limit. You have planned this for so long, worked for it, and now when you think you deserve it, it is still not there. And so? Further work.
This is hard, but there is assurance from deep levels, the assurance of one who knows the Messiah or, if not a Christian, a Messianic figure of some other stripe. That too is hard when faith flags, but remembering one's prior "conversion" experiences is key to restoring it. What you saw then is still true, even if under a cloud of doubt.
That which is sublime and wonderful fills you with amazement when you let it reveal itself in its fullness. Perhaps it shakes you up a little, because it shows you possibilities which are challenging. To fulfill them requires putting in time and constructive effort. If this seems repetitive and bland, it is nevertheless producing, slowly, the good results you hope for. Again this may require faith.
The complexity of your attempts need not be baffling, for you have enough shrewdness to detect pitfalls and avoid them in the future even if you have fallen into them in the past. You care about symbolizing glorious things for those who need reassurance. This you can do in your work, and lift the gloom from people. You protect those who have earned your love, and some who have not.
Large, grandiose patterns you have studied are helping, even if you say nothing about them. Within you, they influence what you say and do. Such hidden awareness gives surety. It can prevent you from getting lost in some questionable scheme which would fail because it is either unethical or not well-founded in practicality. Work and money are on people's minds. Did you need that news from me? Although we are in the early days after a New Moon, and the time as pointed out yesterday is good for planning, today you might find that patient effort is the focus. It has an element of study or learning in it.
Someone who has astounded you by his prowess, whether physical, mental, or artful, has a secret role in your life which is now pronounced, sometimes exhilarating, sometimes illuminating. Learning from this individual is not easy, but essential.
An adroit view of practical possibilities is yours while Mars forms an exact sextile with the sun and Mercury. You can be cooperating somehow for the greater good and your own.
Tendencies you have had toward the sensual, the thrill of the chase or pursuit of competition or love of racing nowhere in particular, are within you but held back by realistic needs such as keeping up with job schedules.

Things are intense, but as pointed out yesterday, this is probably the best day of the week for decisions, choices, transactions and agreements, insofar as such seem desirable. (Let me point out that if you are in a western time zone, the time given in Monday's forecast, late in the evening, after the moon enters Libra, could be equally desirable.)
Within the intensity, it is important to maintain your affinity with a true teacher who has been solid for you in the past, a guide or guru. He or she will help you enlist your talents in the service of humanity, a group, individuals, or G*d. In doing this you face contrasts among varying generations and life-styles. There are points at which they can work together, especially when they need each other. At times, when nothing seems to work, this is a clue that you can drop one particular effort, take a respite, in order to focus on other things which are working at the present time. This you can do without loss if you retain hope.
There is an erratic tendency to the mind while Mercury opposes Uranus, as if you were ahead of yourself and stumbling . Advanced perceptions are hard to articulate in terms of what can make sense in the practical world. Still, you can see what needs to be done and do it. At times you may feel you don't care about the people you are serving, but still the service is what keeps you going.

You could be trying around for different approaches to things and people, and this might seem incompetent because the moon is void-of-course most of the day. So you can experiment a little but be careful about putting any experiments in permanent or committed form.
When people or attempts seem at risk, you can reassure yourself that if you care about people enough to try to do something good for them there will be good results. Yet when things look dangerous for any reason, it is good to pull back and be safe.
With Venus moving to Saturn, and the sun and Mercury opposing Uranus, some individuals seem contrary or unreasonable.
When everything seems to be going in circles, you can calm yourself and refuse to be buffaloed by the peculiarities you face. When people and circumstances seem to oppose you, there is some secret to be learned from them.

No doubt the financial markets, losses, and readjustments in sources of income are disturbing to many. This is reflected in the daily chart with its emphasis on the 8th-2nd sectors of money. The pain occurred last week but is being nursed today.
The situation is bounced into the area of friendship, because when people feel uncertain there is a malaise in interpersonal relations and friendships. So you may be melancholy, and seek fulfillment inwardly in religious-spiritual realizations. (Those who make a huge distinction between the religious and the spiritual are, I believe, really making a distinction between institutional religion and personal religion, for "religio" means binding--to G*d in this case, which is also what the spiritual means if it means anything real.)
The fight between the spirit and the flesh is spurned by those who think they have gotten beyond "religion"--yet they still fight that battle in other ways, as in the effort to control impulses they know to be dangerous or unhealthy.
You are careful in pursuing what you know you have to pursue for your well-being, your work. As watchful as a cat watching for a mouse. You will not give up.
Venus moving closer to Saturn by the day suggests that your emotions are rock-like or barren, or pained by what seems the absence of love, and even a revulsion or rejection of anyone who once seemed beloved. There is much absorption in the mental life, with the moon and sun both in signs ruled by Mercury. You can be opportunistic in career matters, pushing ahead and gaining your place, with favor from those in high positions.

Then things can change, at least for a while, and there is glorious entertainment, the privilege of enjoying someone else's talent and grace. The exhilaration reaches a point at which one feels giddy and able to command, take charge of someone or the scene. There is a sudden ability to rise beyond self-imposed limits and work a kind of magic through surprising interconnections or subtle powers one did not realize one possessed. Voila!
The naivete of all this is childlike, artless, and for a while youthful ideas conquer. Then a sense of values awakens, and there is a weighing of varied alternatives. Judgment becomes conscious and choice imperative. New events are a chance for innovation in approaching them. Life takes on a glamor of freshness and heightened reality. The near-autumn season of discovery is upon us.

There is determination to stay with what you had decided and finish it. This gets you through the morning, although for four hours before the moon enters Taurus (12:24p PT | 3:24p ET | 7:24p UT) there is drift or carelessness or a need to regenerate by relaxing. (Apologies to those in the Eastern Hemisphere; it will not be "morning" there.) "Effortless effort" is a key at such times; this one is brief but comes early in the day so could be disconcerting. Up to 8:06a PT | 11:06a ET | 3:06p UT the moon's square with Mars grants energy. You could use irritation as a prod to achievement rather than to complaining. After that comes the four-hour "void" time.
Then after the moon enters Taurus (first time given above) you could sail toward something realistic and satisfying.
The trine of Mercury and Jupiter continues to make technical and work matters easier to handle, with a bit of cooperation with those with whom your lot is cast. Making the wheels of commerce turn more smoothly is a high priority.
A focus on the 8th sector suggests that what in the U. S. is called "the European debt problem" will get a lot of attention, but the moon's entrance into Taurus the money sign comes too late in the day for the Europeans to settle much; perhaps Friday will be better for that.

(Apologies to those in the Eastern Hemisphere; it will not be "morning" there.) "Effortless effort" is a key at such times; this one is brief but comes early in the day so could be disconcerting. Up to 8:06a PT | 11:06a ET | 3:06p UT the moon's square with Mars grants energy. You could use irritation as a prod to achievement rather than to complaining. After that comes the four-hour "void" time.
Then after the moon enters Taurus (first time given above) you could sail toward something realistic and satisfying.
The trine of Mercury and Jupiter continues to make technical and work matters easier to handle, with a bit of cooperation with those with whom your lot is cast. Making the wheels of commerce turn more smoothly is a high priority.
A focus on the 8th sector suggests that what in the U. S. is called "the European debt problem" will get a lot of attention, but the moon's entrance into Taurus the money sign comes too late in the day for the Europeans to settle much; perhaps Friday will be better for that.

This is the first day of a Bright Hermetic Epoch extending through September and October until November 5. No more excuses for inaction or indecision.
Saturday, however, could be properly indecisive or lazy until the moon enters Pisces at 12:26p PT | 3:26p ET | 7:26p UT. After that there are greater possibilities of clear thinking and deep understanding. The moon in the sign of Jupiter and Neptune grants feelings of kindness and mutual understanding, plus sympathy, increasing into the evening and late hours when there can be happy friendship.
Luna's opposition with Mercury in Virgo suggests a desire to straighten out procedures. You can set up schedules, organize computer methods or files, physical files, books and papers. It is fun to put things in place and feel you know what you are doing and everything will be there when you want it and you will not get off-base or out of kilter by missing key events, opportunities, or tasks. Let's look ahead in a way we seldom do in these mostly-daily forecasts. This might give useful orientation, because tomorrow, Saturday, we enter a two-month Bright Hermetic Epoch. You can adapt what is said here to your personal situation, I hope with profit and insight, if not now then as events unfold:

There is a contrast between crude, violent or uncouth people on one side, and those who care about nature, gardening, farming, the planet's resources and human resources on the other. The contrast ought to be easy to see. People cannot go on exploiting themselves, others, and the planet without paying the price of responsibility. (Oh, could that be slightly higher taxes in some cases, since they are lower than they have been in 70 years in this country? So say some of the super-rich who see the wisdom of the previous three sentences.)
One sees opportunities; they require information and communication, right connections, to become advantages. This could be happening. I saw today in the Wall Street Journal that September, 1931 was the worst month ever for the stock market. A Dark Hermetic Epoch continued through that month until the 28th. In this September, the Dark Epoch ends by the 10th, this weekend. This does not mean the stock market will automatically go up for the rest of the month, by any means, but it should show that collectively we have more savvy economically than we have had during the dismal August period. Whether the President's speech tonight will help practically, or inspirationally, remains to be seen. But this could be a turn-around time. To make it such requires a resolute determination to conquer personal weaknesses and train oneself for success.
Friendly associations, accidental and neighborly, could be wonderful. Even gossip has the constructive upside of interest in one's neighbors or relatives. Seeing how others have succeeded can feed one's own success.
A masterful feeling is more than feeling; it is intuition of one's ability to make it, better than expected. This implicit confidence results in roving, wandering, seeking, interacting. The romance of living's endless small adventures remains undying.

It's interesting that in the brouhaha over the double-scheduling of a Presidential address and the Republican candidate debate, the Republicans apparently won, but really lost: because this evening looks like a ridiculously crazy time for most anything, with the moon still squared Saturn, opposed to Mars, and void-of-course beginning at 1:35p PT | 4:35p ET | 8:35p UT. The President is lucky the Republicans stole his scheduled speech-time! Thursday will be better for him. If any of the Republican candidates say anything intelligent, I would be surprised.
The day as a whole is difficult, although the moon trines Venus at 9:20a PT | 12:20p ET | 4:20p UT. A few hours before and after this may be the smoothest or friendliest time of the day, and better for business (not after the void-of-course begins).
When people get together, in interest groups, or social or spiritual groups, there is a stripped-back determination for each to assert himself or herself gallantly, with the risk of clashes but at the same time some relief that feelings are being expressed honestly. Everybody has rights, it seems, but it's hard to see when someone else's trump one's own.

Labor Day 2011
I hope you are having a happy holiday weekend.
I had planned to write a forecast for Monday as usual, but the events of Sunday got away from me and it is late in the evening. I am going to skip Monday's forecast to let myself have a little more time to recover from today's rather grueling happenings. All is well, it was just a temporary need to attend to unexpected matters (typical of the Dark Hermetic Epoch).
I hope to post a forecast for Tuesday.

It's easy to take things easy and languish, rest, hang out, be lazy while the moon toward the end of Scorpio squares Neptune, until it enters Sagittarius at 1:05p PT | 5:05p ET | 9:05p UT. (Or, for serious spiritual seekers, this is a good aspect for confronting the difficult yet exalting aspects of the spiritual life. Without such a quest, there is more worry.) After that the day's activities, whatever they may be on a holiday weekend (in the U. S.), take on more life and energy. Late afternoon and evening are more adventurous.
There can be a seductive quality of mutual entanglement, while Venus and Mars play with each other through a sextile. (This could be same-sex as well as other-sex connections.) And, despite the sluggish economy, individuals have a feeling of wealth, as if content with largesse they are able to enjoy.
The tendency to just give up when things are tough, which all of us have experienced, is with us; as well as a prudent tendency, wanting to be sure there will be enough at hand next week or next month. So you are likely to veer from one attitude to the other, spend too much and then watch your spending like a hawk, and then . . .
There are invitations toward heightened intimacy, and with them a realization within yourself that such friendships require care and caring in order to last and flourish in ways which will please you and the other.

Remaining true to your mission or work is exacting but satisfying. You can be flexible, kind, generous and inventive, succeeding further than you had expected. Late afternoon and early evening may find you still completing work or making preparations for the weekend. It feels good.
