Monday 1 February 2010

\Ambitions Clarified through Interest in Living/

Ordinary things are important, not just because it's Monday but Luna is in Virgo the sign of work or service, not forming exhilarating aspects, but its trine with Mercury in Capricorn suggests good common sense and stick-to-it-iveness through routine tasks.

The long-promised beginning of the Bright Hermetic Epoch is Friday. Meanwhile I believe you will notice things getting progressively clearer. Did you notice a new breath of freedom on Saturday? I did and I think it is connected with the loosening "vise" of the planetary configurations. An exception is Saturn square Pluto, exact today. It has been with us (by 10-degree orb) since August. I have not set out to analyze it intensively here. Searching through past astrologers' thoughts, I find in Isabel Hickey: "There are periods of withdrawal from close contacts with others. These will be used well if they are used to understand the primitive side of the individual's nature, so that self-mastery becomes a visible goal." I find this true of several people I know. This aspect remains with us, in varying strengths, until November 23. Says Isabel: "One of the most elusive of character qualities, humility, is the antidote for this intense aspect."

It is interesting that "humility" in our politicians seems to be just what everyone is looking for, rather than arrogant partisan warfare; and this "elusive character quality" is being forced upon them, including the President, by their failures.

You may experience your own kind of frustration with someone in a power position, with tempers on a short fuse. You may note how some love to display their prosperity, evoking envy in those who feel left out. Or you might catch yourself doing this. Humility, again, is a remedy.

Dithering and dreaming of remote places you'd like to be may be a sign of weakness, yet you are impressionable toward such visions and desires. An ocean cruise? A vacation to somewhere you've dreamed of? Yet if you don't keep up with responsible everyday tasks, such possibilities will collapse. In your mind, and through media, you can bring such places into your home, or wherever you are, rather than feeling you must go there.

Attention to your home is natural and timely. You want to make it a place of security for yourself and anyone important to you. That you can do, without unnecessary worry, because you are in a mood to do it.

You reach high for truths and inspirations which will sustain you and make you invulnerable to the machinations of the world. You can receive such gifts of the spirit munificently and give thanks for them. Whatever question you want to ask of the Highest might receive convincing answer.

Accounting could be satisfying, keeping business or financial records in shape. This is getting less annoying, tiresome and difficult as we approach the Bright Hermetic Epoch (February 5 through April 3).

Your faith is strong, and helps you to hold on when your competence is inadequate. The competence will develop; meanwhile you can trust someone or Someone to lift you over hard places.

*We Need One Another's Talents*

Luna was at her fattest last night and today mildly waning. Her opposition with Neptune, building through the day into the evening, suggests confusion unless you can open yourself to the higher side of Neptune, which is universal love. That's the kind of love which gets tripped up by romantic love, and trips it up! Happy tripping.

Fresh potentials are popping in out of nowhere. At the same time you are aware of the perilous nature of the fate of certain individuals who feel they have lost it or missed it. They may be in the perils of despair. They find you a source of fresh hope. Their conception of themselves and of their position in the world is demeaning and they know they must either give up or find a better way of going. This is a time for "conversion" in the sense of "turning around" or finding a better path. The consequences of not doing so are being made frighteningly clear.

Direction and self-restraint are crucial for sticking to the better path. Your inspiration is real and exalting. When someone seems to be in your way, or in the way of your inspired intentions, you could become so frustrated that you burst out in forcefulness, bordering on violence, before you realize what has happened. Something in you will be what it will be, whether or no. It would be better to find the acceptable channels for it rather than battle against the prohibited ones.

A convivial trend can be ecstatic at best. That could mean partying or relaxed self-indulgence. You will know when it has gone far enough. There is a desire to reach beyond yourself into someone else's life, or the generalized lives of others. The first is personal attraction and romance; the second is entertainment, the arts, theater, literature, or even philosophy. One might regard the second as a substitute for the first; or as a supplement; or a corrective of sheer interpersonal impulse. Which way you go depends on where you are at this point in your life and what you need most. Something in you survives past all emotional vicissitudes.

Your high aspirations make you highly desirous of awakening inspiration in others around you, through either an art, a craft, your business, your career mode, or a talent or skill you like to exercise. That you can do magnificently.

Old Sol and J. D.

[Friday's forecast was posted earlier, beneath this.]

In Memory of J. D. Salinger

Today, in orange lettering, I mentioned "old Sol," namely, the sun, ruler of the sign Leo. Later in the day I saw that J. D. Salinger had passed from this world. And, in the NYTimes obituary, we learn, concerning the Salinger children, that
Their father, Sol, was a Jew, the son of a rabbi, but sufficiently assimilated that he made his living importing both cheese and ham.

If anybody says that was "just a coincidence" in my presence they will get something drastic from me---at least a scowl!

No, it was not just a coincidence. I have been an admirer of Salinger for long and love his writing. I am going to re-read The Catcher in the Rye very soon.

Oddly enough, I saw my copy of it floating around my apartment a couple weeks ago and thought, "I wonder how old Salinger is doing?" He is the kind of writer millions of readers would have loved to meet. Me too.

Sol as his father's name was no doubt an abbreviated Solomon, and yet the Latin Sol meaning the sun is the same name whether it is the same or not, that is, whether or not philologists think there is any connection between them. "Only connect . . . " said another great Capricorn novelist, E. M. Forster, in fact both were born on January 1 (different centuries).

I connect. Salinger was born in 1919, a double 19 year, and the Tarot card number 19 is---could you have guessed?---The Sun.

There was a reason I mentioned "old Sol" on the day of Salinger's death.

That card, the Sun, is extremely important in connection with Salinger, who idealized youth in a remarkable way in all his writing. The Sun card shows two pre-pubescent naked children holding hands, with old Sol smiling on them from above.

Blessed be J. D. Salinger! A remarkably wise man who loved and understood youth, as many Capricorn individuals can do.

Since he also loved and valued his privacy, I shall not go into a full-scale analysis of his horoscope at this point. I note, however, that the backward-moving Mars in Leo at present is at 10 Leo, while Mars in Salinger's birth-chart is at 9 Leo. This does not mean death! (it happens, for all of us, a little more than once every three years) but it indicates something fascinating about the time of Salinger's passing, namely, that his Holden Caulfield---nicely denoted by Mars in Leo since Mars is a male and Leo is perhaps the foremost sign of youth (with Aries)---(Capricorn understands and loves youth but is not young, even as a child)---is a paradigmatic young male, which is why The Catcher in the Rye remains an extremely popular book among young people (that includes me) the world over. In other words, J. D. passed from this world at a time when he could become Holden! He is now Holden: to Sol beholden.

May he rest indeed peacefully, and then have many more youthful adventures, to be recorded by him, no doubt, in a future lifetime.

Old Sol is smiling.

*Full Questing Moon*

Orange for Leo wherein the moon sails. Our old Sol's color. Let's be glad it warms us.

You are on your own this day; I have no cogent advice to offer. It is the Full Moon day and evening, signifying heightened consciousness and awareness of things from a broader and deeper perspective.

So you may get better glimmers of what you are all about and what your life is about and where you are heading.

The moon with Mars in Leo while Mars goes backward and opposes both the sun and Venus---symbolized by "our leader"s State of the Union address Wednesday---suggests a readiness to confront dilemmas, tangles, and disagreements in one way or another, let us hope not just with nervous laughter but something resembling real insight. That could include games, controversies, debates, discussions. I think we ought to have more games in which no one wins and no one loses, that is, playful games, such as those puppies play with one another. The focus on "winning" is essentially divisive and conflict-ridden.

One man's G*d is another's illusion, so I do not know how to write something meaningful for |anyone at all| in the world. My perspective is theistic, both Christian and Hindu, not Buddhistic nor agnostic nor humanist nor atheist. So I cannot offer advice to those who are not theists, that is, who do not "believe in" or understand something of the reality of the omniscient, omnipotent, and all-loving Supreme One. So my constant non-astrological yet truly astrological advice is, Find God, talk with God, improve and deepen your relation with Him (or Her if you so visualize the One beyond sex as beyond all finite divisions and delimitations). If you don't know God, as none of us do completely, study the four Gospels of Jesus, the Bhagavad Gita of Vaishnava Hinduism, Sri Aurobindo, George Berkeley, Leibniz, Hegel, and Alfred North Whitehead.

And that is enough advice, on any day.

~Courtesy as Its Own Comforting Reward~

The week's stresses gradually loosen up, while the moon (in Cancer) glides toward a trine with Uranus in the evening.

Friendship and entertainment pick up. Life's delights seem more accessible. You sense who you are by being with people casually rather than demandingly. There is, however, an emphasis on service, so you help one another in simple relatively easy ways.

Highly dramatic matters get thorough dramatization, that is, you want to say, "This is what is real, and I stand up for it." You could convince people more than you realize---that is, later, for they will probably not let on that they are convinced in your immediate presence. So the effort is worth while no matter what the apparent upshot.

"The lines are drawn," so to speak, and it is strengthening to know where you stand.

You can move toward public success even if uncertain about devilish details. They are important, but do not have to be at the forefront of your front to the world.

Some of the things you do to survive involve shared effort which requires stable activities whether you feel like them or not. You can be convivial in a hard-headed way, that is, understanding how people suffer and so not being any harder on them than you are on yourself. Then they relax and open up more. United action is not easy but is becoming easier.

Someone you are helping may need affection more than you are willing to give. This person feels that things have collapsed around him or her, and so feels somewhat helpless. You are courteous but cannot do everything for this individual. Being fair and helpful is enough, if no more is possible in the circumstances. This person, and the world in general, will be better able to cope, and feel better about things, in February and March.

A breath of stimulating and awakening freedom is wafted to us from spiritual realms in the evening.

~Growing Understanding~

A rather hum-drum day need not be depressing because plans are coming together and you feel more comfortable about them even if they pose challenges. Financial details are being worked out. Although you feel you need to communicate with certain people, some of them may not be available; further, telling them what you mean without annoying them is a little tricky.

Some plans may be premature, yet are getting more definite in the back of your mind. You might be tempted to overspend, overeat, or otherwise go on a self-indulgent binge. This is not inevitable, however, when you pull yourself back to reality, from which you do not need to escape because it is ready to be molded by you.

How to gain your freedom from certain restrictions is on your mind, and you can do it, although some restrictions are necessary temporarily, so the way you work out of them has to be patient and subtle, as Houdini.

Deep understanding of matters which fascinate you is possible, whether astrology, more conventional sciences, or philosophy. (I recommend looking at the writings of the philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, born in this month of Aquarius, whose brilliant contribution was born of his studies in mathematics and the natural sciences as well as an implicit Christian spiritual heritage and a real grounding in the history of philosophy. Of course he understood evolution, as the Darwinists do, but this was not even a tiny detraction from his concept of God, one of the most brilliant ever developed. The current agnostic-atheists who think evolution is incompatible with G*d need to study him, but of course that would require more conceptual effort than they are willing to make. They are not even aware of their own ignorance.)

A convivial trend is muted by a serious trend; they coexist, and how you blend them is up to you. Sometimes you could evoke a friendlier mood from someone by sharing gifts of the spirit, charitably; at other times it might be better to keep them to yourself because someone just is not in the right place to receive them.

The notion that someone in a power-position is imprisoning or hindering you may or may not be true. It may be that money grants freedom, relatively, and yet some wealthy individuals have not found that so, because they did not know how to use their wealth. It is well to feel secure and contented with your home and your current living situation, so you can proceed to manage your life and develop it from there, without feeling resentment of anyone. Expanded understanding is a key to closed doors.

}Finding Peace Within the Puzzling{

Long-term trends are promising; the short term looks choppy, that is, for today and tomorrow. Thursday through the weekend is somewhat smoother. Long-term planning is better than it has been in weeks, more likely to be correct. But some major details may not be straightened out until next week or the week after.

The emotional mood is down today, as compared with Monday, but this need not be an obstacle to getting things done. The new is unsettling; the old and established is comforting. You can rely on the latter to keep you at peace, whether spiritual teachings, poetry, music, or whatever from the past reassures you.

A neighbor, relative, or someone in communication with you could pull you off the path of prudence toward something licentious or self-indulgent. This could impede more serious plans temporarily. People are looking for something to reassure them they are at home in the world.

A friend at a distance, combined with yourself, might have some power you don't fully appreciate. You feel more vulnerable than you really are. You get good luck by facing studies seriously and grappling with difficult information or ideas. That is a major key to this day. It is not so much social as studious, a time for learning, or developing understanding.

You are gifted, both in talents and material abundance. If the latter does not seem true, you don't appreciate what you have or what is available. You might share a meal, drink or delightful perk with someone at or from work, or the boss. Certain interests you thought were yours alone might be shared by someone in a powerful position. Still, it is hard to feel completely at ease with him or her.

The clash of ideas or opinions could be stressful at times. So you need to pull back and understand how little people seem to agree with each other on superficial levels. That does not mean they are not united at a deeper spiritual level, but remaining at that stratum is pretty difficult for our outwardly interacting personalities. The world, history, and human life seem a long process of piecing together a jigsaw puzzle of which no one has all the pieces. Still. you can do your best with your immediate portion.

}Friendliness Restores Confidence and Serenity{

I am not going to be a cheerleader today; I am too exhausted; but it is at least a better day than Tuesday and Wednesday are likely to be, so I would schedule something enjoyable either in the day or the evening. It might even be the best "party" day of this week, though Mondays are not usually considered such.

Poor Mars, opposed by Venus, quincunx Mercury, and retrograde, seems utterly bewildered, although making a strong fight for recovery. The principle of initiative, in both sexes, is not totally blocked but is face to face with the blocks it needs to overcome. That is good because it helps to define the battle, struggle, enterprise or project.

You may feel benevolent, yet reserved; cautious yet wanting to reach out to people. You know your worth and others will recognize it also if you let companionship happen even when it seems unpromising at first. Mars and Venus opposed, but both in good aspect to Saturn, suggest that only the truest, most lasting and tested relationships are going to flourish at this point. That doesn't mean you couldn't meet with strangers, though both parties will be testing each other against past friends and partners.

You are close to someone---and "close" could mean on the mental plane rather than in direct outer contact---who sees far into the future, has studied things assiduously and knows how to express his or her understanding in ways which are fresh, vital and encouraging. This individual, whether "alive" or in another dimension, has a subtle touch which dramatizes your possibilities and the unrealized potentials of the society within which you function.

You are realizing when to pull back from outer involvements, "when to fold" in gambling lingo, so as to save time, money and energy. This is a highly valuable skill. You hold certain elements of your work or career in reserve, so as to nourish them, and then pick them up later when they are better-ready to be used.

That doesn't mean you are letting things drift, though observers might accuse you of that. You are giving up what looks pointless, to preserve your peace of mind and gain strength on a higher level.

You are trying to pull yourself together, that is, unite your thought and action rather than get lost in too many minor details which go nowhere. This you can do, and then you find that some amazing things happen in the emotional sphere, that is, love or human fellowship or zestful attraction shared with someone attracted to you. Mutual approval and enjoyment may last long or only briefly, but while they last you are uplifted and the discomfort of separations you have been feeling is eased.

\Fascinating Chaos Need Not Become Rapacious/

An enormous earthquake making millions homeless, tens of thousands killed . . . A congress tied up in knots over health care reform and unable to do anything intelligent because of partisan bickering . . . a Supreme Court which has as of Thursday effectively sold the nation to the highest bidder, the fattest-cat lobbyist . . . ending democracy as we know it . . . three straight days of a precipitous stock-market slide . . . It must be the Dark Hermetic Epoch!

And it is, until February 5. (As of today, I recommend that the Supreme Court be in complete recess during every Dark Hermetic Epoch. That is almost half the time; but they could study their briefs etc. during that time, just not make their final decisions.)

If you have a feeling nobody knows what they are doing, I think you may be right. Maybe I don't either, but I struggle on with these forecasts giving you the best I can fathom each day . . . (As usual, there will be no forecast for Sunday. I need one day off.)

And it is not just the DHE which is plaguing us. By the way, as I have said endlessly but must say again and again, astrology is not fatalism and the planets do not control us. That is, unless we give in to "them," which really means to our "mechanical" desires and impulses, rather than our "non-mechanical but purposeful" higher nature and ideals and hopes and intelligent plans. Even such plans may be flawed if not imbued with the Supramental, in Sri Aurobindo's terms, or the Divine Will in universal theistic terms.

The planets can be said to be as dual as our own nature. That is, the higher Mars is a serious, reliable male who does his work honestly for himself, his family and all who depend on him, "a real mensch." The lower Mars is a libertine who believes in "might makes right" and bullies his way through lover after lover and fight after fight until he wears himself out or gets himself killed or imprisoned. The latter may be more colorful, and more pleasing to novelists and script-writers, but few would say he has a happier life than the former.

And so with the other planets. I mention Mars because he is now retrograde, until March 10 (and has been since December 20), so we get a solid chance to see male-ness ridiculing itself by being ridiculous or backward or silly. This is good, ultimately, because it helps males get a better grip on themselves and their peculiar genetic code. Interestingly enough, while Mars has been retrograde some geneticists have propounded the theory that the male gene, not the female, is responsible for innovation. Hmm, is this news? Any astrologer would have said the same. According to Marc Edmund Jones, Mars initiates things and Venus consummates them.

Mars is retrograde in the sign Leo, President Obama's sun-sign. This is highly significant in view of the thick and repetitive discussion now of "Is the President off course? What went wrong? Can he recover?" and on and on. Maybe we will get better answers to those questions in March, April and the rest of the year.

A professor of biology, David Page, said that the Y or male chromosome "is an almost ongoing churning of gene reconstruction. It's like a house that's constantly being rebuilt." Boy does that sound like Mars. In fact, the Tarot card representing Mars is Major Trump 16, The Lightning-Struck Tower, a symbol of the need for endless rebuilding and reconstruction.

Of course, all males have a Venus in them that wants to finish the job and just rest for a long time. Likewise, all females have a Mars in them capable of the same kind of reconstruction (or redecorating perhaps).

Saturday has the potential of focus on household and neighborhood needs. You are trying to hold on to what you have gained, rather than gain something new. You are reviewing the past as necessary preface to the future. If you think of certain friends at a distance almost as enemies, or ex-friends, this is a normal part of the current pattern while Mars is opposite Venus and the sun. I used the term "distancing" in the title of Friday's report, and it is equally pertinent today. This does not necessarily mean cold aloofness, although it could, but a need to "give each other space" in friendships and relationships. This could be true especially through February 3. People do not want to feel you are meddling with them, and vice versa.

It is possible to find healing, calming influences, in the Hindu way through spiritual study, mantra, and meditation, or the Christian way through spiritual study and prayer or ritual, and so on. This could be specially important today.

Indifference to things which plague you can be a higher indifference based on philosophic or spiritual understanding, rather than a lower indifference which is little more than laziness. Then you are willing to do things to rectify the situation, but do not feel you have to fret and struggle continuously, so that in fact your efforts become more effective as "effortless effort."

Essentials are essentials, and you intuit what they are. You could get off the beam (colorfully, as above!) by letting your desires, which could get intense, lead you to push your way into either arguments or erotic imbroglios. A lustful urge could make itself felt, a desire to penetrate into someone else's consciousness and ravish it. Well, we all know how that can end up (the script-writers love it!) and so we are mostly careful. The word "rapacious" is not nice, but could be appropriate today to indicate some of what many will be feeling. Let's be civilized.

*Distancing as Perspective, Followed by Happy Time*

(Red because the moon is in Aries for the third day, until it enters Taurus at 8:41p PT | 11:41p ET | 4:41a UT; this may be an ugly color to you, I hope not too jarring.)

The |worst third of the week| ends this morning at 4:40a PT | 7:40a ET | 12:40p UT. I never mean to imply that for every individual this will be literally the hardest part of the week, or that the rest of the week will be easy! Things are not quite that simple. But it is the time in which a much higher percentage of painful events occur, such as: The earthquake in Haiti, and then one week later, the largest aftershock (Wednesday this week); 9/11/01; and then 11/22/63 when JFK was assassinated. Countless murders and accidents taken from your or my local paper. And on and on. This is verified and certain, there is no doubt about it, but it is statistical, so you can of course rise above that in your individual case. It is a time when KARMA is intense, heavy, when KARMA IS CLEARED. But we are out of it now, so keep this in mind for next week . . .

(I will copy this and re-post it then . . . )

Today, Friday, is at least somewhat less hideous than recent days. You may be in a retrospective mood, wanting to ponder your life and what it means and where you are in it now and . . . where you're going---but if you read these reports at all you know that that last part will be easier in February.

You are willing to do with less rather than more, in order to be true to yourself and your principles. That is admirable.

Not that you want less rather than more, but that you put your own agenda, your hopes and plans, your beliefs and convictions, ahead of merely scraping around for income or more income all the time. You can trust to the principle that you are always given what you really need at a given time.

You have "been there and done that" with a lot of things. Some of them you do not have to repeat, but treasured memories help you see what you do in fact want to do in the next few months. Though it is too soon for stringent plans.

You may feel defiant about a lot of things which have weighed you down. It is dangerous to "throw in the towel" and quit a job, for example, and I don't recommend it, but you may have strong urges in that direction. Somehow you can stage a rebellion, of sorts, without tossing out the necessary parts of your current life.

Rather than resigning a job, you can be resigned to the Will of Heaven. You need some perseverance. Realize that this is a hard place which will get easier before too long. Make protests if you can, or squawking noises, to let people know you are not satisfied with things which seem off base. That is better than just jumping ship.

If you can't keep faith with those who don't seem to know what they are doing, perhaps you could keep faith with the One who has control over them and all else; perhaps you are going through the harder part of a test.

You are not weak, but may be becoming indifferent to a lot of things which others think are crucial. Didn't comb your hair? Big deal! Deal with it! (you think). Your shoes are scuffed up and one came untied---wow, this could be the cause of World War III? Get real! (you say to yourself). In other words, you have your priorities, and if others think they are silly you, in turn, think such critics are silly.

At the same time, you know when to pull back. You are not "hiding," you are evaluating intelligently when it is worth while to be involved in things, or people, and when not. Caution is not a mistake when you know you have a limited amount of free time and need to devote most of that to your own interests.

You have a strong desire for distant places, deep refreshing knowledge, and philosophic poise. You feel that some forms of entertainment, which others regard as silly pastimes, are helping you arrive closer to an intuition of subtle truth. Therefore you proceed to "play the fool" for those who can't see beyond the garish costume, content because you know what is really going on. We dramatize things for one another, often without knowing how or why.

The evening, when the moon is forming four friendly aspects, looks very pleasing.

*Meandering, Relaxing or Dabbling Toward an Inchoate Future*

It's dismal. You must know it, as the Haitians do. Case in point: Today as I write (Wednesday) my Internet connection is missing so I have to use dial-up, which is so slow I have already wasted an hour trying to get things going; on top of that Microsoft insists on downloading updates on this slow connection and I am unable to stop it from doing so; making it almost impossible for me to use the Internet; so I am late writing this and don't have much time. What are the delays in your life?

A natural question would be, "Well then, when will this end?" I wish I had a quick answer. Robin Fairy was right the other day when she wrote to the group that they should heed what I say, that the Dark Hermetic Epoch is as important as Mercury retrograde, because while Mercury turned direct a couple days after the earthquake, we are still in the Dark Epoch until February 5, and both the Haitians and I, and probably you, are suffering continued delays and troubles; to me they seem worse instead of better. So my quick although not complete answer is, "Things will start getting better by February 5."

There are some fairly good planetary aspects in February, and some in March, and quite a few in April although another Dark Epoch begins on April 4. At any rate, in February and March you should be able to see where you are going and be more confident about what you are doing. (Unfortunately for me, by then you will have forgotten that I said this when you were perplexed, and so I will get no credit for having predicted it.)

Today, Thursday, has a few upbeat indications although we remain in the |difficult third of the week| until Friday morning. You may be more inclined to be out and about today than yesterday.

People may be argumentative, convinced they are right and you wrong. This is hard to deal with, although appealing to reason can have some effect and is worth trying. Of course it is better not to escalate things by getting upset and angry, although your anger may be justified. On the plus side, you are learning to be constant and faithful to your principles no matter what anyone thinks or says. That has something to do with career or other projects you are working on.

Mysteries of time and space appeal to your intellect or intuition, as if you could penetrate beyond the present in some inchoate or choate way. (Why is there a word "inchoate" but no word "choate"? The English language is among the most inconsistent. Although it does have a word "consistent.") You have romantic (that is, ethereal, uplifting, dreamy, not sexual) notions about some who have passed from this world and could ponder the history of your family or a group. History is something fixed, established, and yet we have to reconstruct it in order to get a grip on it. (Old photos. Diaries. Memoirs.) That is one peculiarity of the past.

Meanwhile the moon in Aries wants to rush into the future, but now, it seems, there is no discernible future to rush to.

I am not propounding riddles; the riddles are already there; I am trying to enunciate them inchoately. (If you can enunciate them choately, please do it.)

Attending to paperwork is a good idea, in some form or other, although I would say since taxes are not due until the middle of April, waiting until February to do them might not be a bad idea at all; you will probably do them more smoothly and quickly then.

Finding ways of reconciling seeming opposites is possible, at least in your study or bedroom; whether it could be done in a meeting room, office, or the Senate or House, is another matter.

Narcissism is budding; self-love or self-attraction; it is easier than trying to make it with someone alien to you; although that Other is looking at your through your own eyes or you could not see yourself at all; the absorbed, implicit Other is what you use to see yourself.

'Tis a time for riddles.

*Suspicion Mollified Toward Resignation and Congeniality*

We are all Haitians. By that I mean, we are all going through something like what they (and the aid workers trying to assist them) are going through.

Dislocation. Confusion. Lack of some ordinary supplies or conveniences. Waiting. Needing assistance. Trying to re-organize our lives but knowing we just can't do it completely yet. Annoyances; failures of those around us. A need for extreme patience.

I have said, There is only one human being and one planetary horoscope, which is the one I study every day. This is an exaggeration and yet it is true. If you work deeply with what I say here every day, not precisely the words of G*d but so carefully considered that I dare call myself Cosmic Piper, you may find that what is written here will help you get control of your own life---not someone else's---as effectively as anything written by an astrologer studying your own birth-chart. Or, maybe not; I am not making grandiose claims, but I see that when I go deeply into the current planetary patterns and relate them to my own living, I do no need my own horoscope on a daily basis for predictive work. Still, of course, natal birth-charts are extremely important for understanding individual life-patterns and I recommend studying them intensively. By that I mean, the patterns set out at the time you were born, which you brought over from previous lifetimes or which are your basic purposes writ in the heavens. That is a different proposition from predictive work on a daily or monthly basis. For that, you can try all kinds of methods of progression and work with transits to your own chart. But you might find that what is written here will guide you as effectively as all that complicated individual mathematical analysis. (My analyses for the world at large are equally or more complicated.) Or, at the least, it can be a supplement to what you get in other ways.

I am mentioning this because I find that many people, when told "Well the planetary patterns now are such and such," are very impatient, thinking I must be confused or naive, because certainly their own horoscope is more important than "what is going on now in the sky" for everyone. Yes and no. The answer is: If they were to study the current aspects in relation to the past and present of their own lives, they would find that they AUTOMATICALLY interpret them in terms of their own birth-horoscopes. And it is the same with these daily reports. You will AUTOMATICALLY understand what I say in terms of your own patterns, your own horoscope. That is why 20 different readers will get 20 different messages; and yet there is a thread of identity through all of them.

An event like that in Haiti shows how our lives are interlinked. We are just not conscious of that very often.

As for myself, as I write on Tuesday, I find that I feel somewhat lost and struggling to find myself; that I keep meeting delays; that nothing seems clear or codified, in terms of my plans. And I think it is like that with most people. Yet the individual way of being "lost and confused and waiting" is different for each person.

By "waiting" I do not mean you should not be active, especially today while the moon is in Aries beginning at 10:37a PT | 1:37p ET | 6:37p UT. You may feel pleased with certain eventualities which help you feel more at home in the world, even though you are far from feeling really settled. Organizing possessions is a key to many things.

There is a sense of impending adventure, a desire to be with exciting or fascinating people, some of them friends, neighbors or relatives, others strangers. This is happening in ways you could not have planned or foreseen. These people are problematic for you in some ways, but this is good because it requires you to learn and grow.

The seeming aimlessness of the time really means you need respite in order to refine your aim. You can't do everything at once, and sometimes dreaming or idling is a good thing to do, rather than trying to force things which just won't be forced anyway, but tire you out and bollix things up. Entertainment here and there is a wonderful thing. It refreshes the spirit. It also allows for broader perspective so that afterward your own needs are more easily comprehended.

So, indecision is not always bad, either, unlike the message we get from "action movies" where action is always the immediate necessity of the protagonist. A little lounging and a little rest, at this time, can prevent rather than cause loss of time, for rushing around in circles is exhausting and unproductive.

Your public position may be much on your mind, that is, the way you handle what you do in public, which includes your job, career, or any project requiring some kind of public support. You may look at papers or books, or electronic "papers", in order to find your way, and to convince others of ways they could cooperate with you. The power of persuasion is made more effective through congeniality, as for example sharing food, drink or a pleasant relaxing environment.

We are indeed in the |difficult third of the week| so some of the preceding may seem unreal to you. I am outlining some of the better potentials, which can appear serendipitously within a general mood of depression or resignation. Resignation, indeed, is better and more realistic than depression. By not promising much, and not expecting much, you put yourself in a position where whatever happens can be enjoyed more freely.

"A little child shall lead them," even a babe in spirit, for authority gravitates to the one who is simple, honest and inoffensive. You will see something like this happening, with others and yourself, for out of the stress of recent days emerges some kind of effortless grace, a smile or wink, internal poise, reassuring us that all is well.

~On the Way to Being Un-Lost~

The |difficult third of the week| begins at 9:54a PT | 12:54p ET | 5:54p UT, lasting through Wednesday and Thursday until early Friday morning. Rather than try to modify this I feel like saying, "Suffer." You will see what it means in your own case, and the rest of this report should help clarify it.

Thoughts about things and people at a distance are prominent, and perhaps communications with them. Friendship is difficult now, but the challenge in it could bring out character and strength.

An aimless trend could give you respite from hard work, and that is all right up to a point, unless the efforts are specially crucial. You dream of what might have been and what could be. Literal dreams or day-dreams can be creative and are not mistakes when they illumine reality, as they always do if we look into them deeply. Life offers color and intriguing fresh variety to lighten the burden of the humdrum.

Something you believe in, or have believed in, may seem in decline, or to have "lost its savor," and yet you have not given up on it entirely. So there is chatting about it, or a holding-on in hopes that it may revive and become relevant again. That is quite possible if it is of G*d, or at least not in conflict with divine purposes. Some, and perhaps you, may drift into positions of leadership because they are needed, not because they seek those positions directly. Then, once they see the need, they become active in trying to aid those who seem lost.

Something about paper is important, or papers. These have a somewhat official importance, either in business or in a spiritual capacity (as in a group devoted to higher purposes). Rather than weep over Jerusalem, as Jesus did because he could not save it, you may sense how to unite conflicting or incompatible forces or individuals to pull together in a direction all find inspiring and bettering.

The union of the past and present, as of course preparing some future, becomes specially significant. A romantic view of the past is good when it opens our hearts to the best the past has given. Even the intriguing TV series Lost is suggestive of subconscious and ultimately conscious ways we live in the past and present at the same time. Today this could seem sad in a way, if some of the past seems lost, and yet whatever in it remains valuable is never lost, as the Theosophists and other occultists dramatized in their idea of the akashic records or permanent memory of nature.

~Favorable Currents and Simple Choices~

We have Prime Time all day, with the moon in Pisces. People are thinking about their finances and financial planning. Also about international matters or travel. Simple communications can go smoothly, as well as writing, and liaison in job or career matters. Someone important to you may seem more friendly than recently.

Jupiter's entrance into Pisces early today is good news. This is one of the three "best" places for Jupiter, according to the ancients, who generally are spot-on when it comes to astrology. It will be in that sign for approximately the next year (although with a dip into Aries during the summer). As of today, it breaks the stranglehold of Saturn on the major planets. Since Pisces is a water sign, incidentally it might show more fresh water available to Haitians, and in your life the refreshing "water" of universal fellowship or sister-brotherhood.

You may be connected with two individuals of different stripes, one rather conventional, looking for ordinary pleasures in a supposedly sophisticated way, the other more serious and quite superior, able to effect important changes for the world or those close to him. You may have to travel to be in better contact with either of them. Both are rather involved in their personal processes and so somewhat introverted or incommunicative.

It's a good time for contemplation of whatever promises ultimate good fortune for you---which starts "on the inner planes" in occult language, that is, your karma has to be good for your fortunes to be. When you go deep into your reasons for being, you see how the cosmos will support you.

Tax documents are starting to change hands and you may feel better about them with each passing day while Mercury picks up steam. Personal relations with those who share ideas concerning advanced or spiritually oriented projects are likely to be amicable.

Some "big business" connections or contacts may be difficult, although it seems major problems have been avoided. Still some uneasiness requires you to face the limits of those in power positions, whose confidence grates against yours when you feel their positions are inimical to yours. Some of this remains a waiting game while Mercury gathers momentum for the rest of January.

Uncertainty could be a vice, if it paralyzes you from simple choices you need to make on a daily basis. It is a virtue if it protects you from major moves before they have been thoroughly worked out or the time is ripe for them. You dream of greener pastures, and that is good. You also need to do those small things which are obviously needed at present. Sometimes getting in motion, one way or the other, will show you the right path quicker than sitting and pondering. Turning around and going the other way will still be possible if necessary.

}The Groaning Wagon Inches Forward{

"Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; Who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from desruction; Who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth they mouth with good things; thy youth is renewed like the eagle's." Psalm 103: 1-5 (King James version)

It might seem that the people of Haiti have little reason to feel the above praises of the L*rd. Yet according to Simon Romero, in the New York Times, on the evening after the earthquake this is what happened in Port-au-Prince:

With no electricity, stars offered the only illumination in the city, which, with its suburbs, is home to nearly 3 million people. For some of those lying on the asphalt or in the parks, cellphones provided a brief glimpse of light.

Then the singing began. Those gathered outside tents, on lawn chairs, sitting in the middle of empty streets, sang their hymns. One phrase in Creole could be heard repeatedly both inside and outside the hospital walls, as if those voicing the words were trying to make sense of the madness around them.

“Beni Swa Leternel,” they sang. “Blessed be the Lord.”

If they so could sing, how much more we.

"How blest are those who know their need of God; the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

How blest are the sorrowful; they shall find consolation.

How blest are those of a gentle spirit; they shall have the earth for their possession.

How blest are those who hunger and thirst to see right prevail; they shall be satisfied.

How blest are those who show mercy; mercy shall be shown to them." --Jesus, Matthew 5 (New English Bible)

Those such as Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh, who have said Americans ought not to send money to help in Haiti, ought to be ashamed of themselves, and blush to call themselves Christians, with these words of their supposed Lord echoing in the ether for 2,000 years:

"If you love only those who love you, what reward can you expect? Surely the tax-gatherers do as much as that. And if you greet only your brothers, what is there extraordinary about that? Even the heathen do as much. There must be no limit to your goodness, as your heavenly Father's goodness knows no bounds." --Jesus, Matthew 5 (New English Bible)

The American government has been helping Haiti at a rate of $2 per capita (per American taxpayer) per year, according to official figures quoted by Nicholas Kristof in the Times. While the Canadian people through their taxes have helped at a rate of $12 per capita per year, six times as much. The Norwegians, $8 per capita per year. Other countries who have been helping Haiti through their government taxes at a higher per capita rate than Americans: France, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, and Sweden.

Some advise that those who want to help should donate to organizations which have an established track record in Haiti, since they will be more effective in helping. One I found today has a very good reputation, from what I have seen: Partners in Health, https://donate.pih.org/page/contribute/haiti_earthquake . They are an established Haitian charitable health organization, and since they know their own country might be specially effective. I would also trust the IRC, International Rescue Committee. And most likely the Red Cross. I have not researched this thoroughly; but be careful of any fly-by-night group asking for donations; make sure it's an established organization which has done work on that island before. If you have suggestions, by all means post them.

Mercury turned around Friday, and is inching forward in the zodiac, but the Dark Epoch lasts until February 5. That means some of the slowness, delay and backtracking evident for the past several weeks will continue, although with slight amelioration every day, at least in theory. It is fascinating that on Friday as I write, the American forces who have landed in Haiti are unable, at this point, to deliver any aid whatever, but are waiting for equipment and help to clear roads and do other necessary things to get the aid to the impatiently waiting survivors. This is a perfect signature of a "motionless Mercury." They expect to be able to do more later on Friday and, let us hope, today (Saturday).

Recent restlessness may be diminishing; however, you might enjoy a walk or drive in your local area, appreciating your home town or neighborhood, seeing anew its glories, which, like a kaleidoscope, offer ever-new variations.

Something you're trying to accomplish has prestige-granting elements within it and you, rightly, want to be proud of it, so you carry on despite hindrances and draggy-ness.

Resources you own or can access may be used in a multitude of ways, for example in governing situations for which you are partly responsible. You do not need to be afraid to take on a ruling attitude when you are responsible for common goals in view. In this time of improving weather (in many or most places), it is easier to be inspired by hopes for continuity in your agenda, with fewer dispiriting breaks in momentum.

Defining what you expect within a community, or community of interest, is not always easy but the attempt is good, helping all to see their differences as stimulating and ultimately constructive rather than just annoying. People cannot be regimented, except in a military or police department, and even then wise officers know they need to grant selective freedom to their men or women. Then the communal or team effort is less oppressive and more voluntary.

}Purpose Strengthened in Tranquility{

The moon is void of course until 9:18p PT | 12:18p ET | 5:18p UT, so before that you might take things a little less heavily, focusing on ordinary routines rather than plans for the weekend or important deals. Making an important phone call after (rather than before) that time might save you hassles. Then Luna enters Aquarius for the weekend.

We are in the first day of a New Moon. There is youthful energy. Younger (or trying-to-be-younger) males may seem lost or confused while Mars is retrograde in Leo (until early March), yet interesting. They are trying to find their way and reviewing what they have learned, while determined to present an impressive macho image. When they fail in this they do not give up.

Strains and stresses are part of life; meeting them wisely, creatively, or experimentally is the sauce of our living, without which we would not know what to do.

Of course, rest is also important, and today that could be specially useful before and after Mercury is at its station, utterly motionless form our geocentric perspective at 8:53a PT | 11:53a ET | 4:53p UT. This is just before the end of the void-of-course period, so the hours before that (morning in the Western Hemisphere) ought to be used for sitting and doing nothing! That is, meditating. (This is true during the preceding sleep-time also, of course.) Whatever your spiritual practice, that is a very good time for it. If you pray, you can rise toward the Higher or Highest. If you meditate you can go very deep. If you have to be at work, you can sneak some times out, with closed eyes.

Abstaining from any (or too much) eating could be helpful at this time. Coffee might pull your mind toward superficial fretting rather than deeper levels.

Calm and tranquility help you to get a handle on everything, not with panic but with peaceful, genial assurance. Later, after the moon enters Aquarius, you might become more restless, wanting to experiment with weekend explorations. These have an impact on your sense of who you are and what you are becoming. You are taking yourself and your life very seriously, and that is appropriate. With Mercury direct and a New Moon, the time is ripe for sensing the path ahead, even if it is too soon to run down it; meandering and observing would be the better approach.

What is the authority you possess? You know what it is. It might be within your family, a group of friends, a fraternal or esoteric organization or church, or your job or career. You are not a tyrant, but people look up to you for guidance or direction or for the service you perform. This brings you closer to goals, because your integrity is respected. When you are tempted to relax and just enjoy what you have, your prerogatives, something within you will only let you do that for a measured duration.

Some who are rugged, natural and gruff in their demeanor may be important to you, helping you on an upward course. Together you are climbing a mountain of aspiration. When you persevere, you find out how better to cooperate toward high attainments.

\Poised for Inner Redirection/

Things are improving slowly. The |difficult third of the week|, which this time included the Haiti earthquake (about which I wrote and posted here a special report), ends around noon in the Western Hemisphere, around sunset in the Eastern. (I shall not calculate the exact minute; I spent a lot of time working on the earthquake report.)

However, we remain in the Old and waning moon until the New Moon at 11:12p PT | 2:12a(F) ET | 7:12a(F) UT. It is good to "wind down" a little or let yourself coast a bit while not giving up on big plans, for they may be getting sharper in your mind while Mercury goes to his station before turning direct Friday in the middle of the day. You may be seeing your way ahead much better, even more so in the next few days. Mercury turning direct just after a New Moon bodes well for a reduction of uncertainty and a more straightforward life-plan.

Steadiness is important while we (and the earthquake victims) recover our poise. You may feel happy when thinking of games, sports, or entertainment figures who please you. Those who are lively, randy, and impatient put action ahead of eating and lazing around. That is good, so long as one does not leap too far ahead of current vision, which remains incomplete.

It's possible to arrange your headquarters and things in it in such a way that you see the layout more helpfully, with less stress in finding things, and more efficiency. You also are attracted to ephemeral pleasures or interests which provide amusement along with a bit of enlightenment. You take your up-and-coming status in the world seriously but don't want to be overwhelmed by ambition.

Continuing fulfillment seems in the cards, so you have confidence to persist through this turning point while your inner mind reflects and gains greater and greater surety about specific plans. You rule, in your sphere! Your authority there shines out for others to respect.

A restless side of you trusts to spontaneous choices, since you have the implicit background to choose happily. You are complacent about your personality---people can take it or leave it---while you feel that fresh adventures are on the way and you do not have to be anxious about them even though they require much from you.

This poised turning point of Mercury can be a time for relaxed, rapt, deeply reassuring contemplation, the mind quieted to harbor the impulsion of Spirit.

Earthquake in Haiti

The earthquake which hit Haiti Wednesday--I do not have the exact time or times of the quake or quakes at my disposal just now--occurred, naturally, during a Dark Hermetic Epoch. It is true that these occupy about half of the time, a little less; but after the Katrina hurricane struck New Orleans, I wrote here that if all national and international disaster and aid agencies would take note of the Dark Hermetic Epoch they would be better prepared to deal with any disaster which might come up at such a time. I do not know what might have helped to save lives in Haiti, but it is just a fact of nature and humanity on this planet that at least 60 and perhaps 80 per cent of all major disasters, of any kind, national, international, criminal, personal, occur during the Dark Epochs. I have seen it and I know it. I wait for the statisticians to catch up with me a few centuries from now when the fear of astrology has waned.

Naturally, the earthquake also occurred during a |difficult third of the week| period, as forecast here in the daily reports. (It was Tuesday and Wednesday, up to about noon Thursday, this week.) I have stated here repeatedly that this is the time, each week, when more accidents, criminal deeds, bombings, and so on are likely to occur, and experience backs me up abundantly. If ever police departments around the globe pick up on what Cosmic Piper already knows, they will have more officers at the ready during these times each week. Earthquakes are more "natural" than "human," it appears, yet so-called natural disasters also occur more frequently at these times.

The long-term square between Pluto in Capricorn, an earth sign, and Saturn in Libra looks very earth-quaky, to any astrologer, since Pluto rules the "underworld" and often anything geological, and Saturn is the heavy planet of disasters (although it is much more than that in a positive sense). I had suspected there would be earthquakes during this time, but did not go public because I do not like to stimulate fear and I had no idea what part of the globe might be hit by them.

I do not generally study the birth-charts of nations. Not that I think them useless but I have, like all of us, a limited amount of time for such studies and have instead devoted myself to what I could do with the daily forecasts I have been refining for at least 21 years since I started writing for Astrology Guide magazine in 1978. Some of you think these are useful, and I am glad of that.

But this striking quake sent me to the birth-chart of Haiti, which gained its independence on January 1, 1804. This has given me a new respect for these national horoscopes, about which I have had some doubt. In this case the correspondences are striking beyond belief. The Haiti chart has Mars at 3 degrees Capricorn, and Pluto now is at---guess what?---3 degrees Capricorn. Saturn, squaring it, is at 4 degrees Libra, and the Haiti Saturn is at 3 degrees Libra.

If someone had told any competent astrologer, "Use the transits of the planets to the horoscopes of nations and figure out where an earthquake might hit in January 2010" any competent astrologer would have put Haiti way up toward the top of the list. The "natal" aspect of Mars square Saturn, very close to exact, in the Haiti chart shows the incredibly difficult history of that country, which has suffered under cruel dictators much of its existence and has had severe economic and health problems. This is considered one of the most difficult aspects in astrology by most astrologers. The fact that two slow-moving planets, Pluto and Saturn, are right on those two points now, and both planets have much to do with the earth, and the Pluto-Mars contact is in Capricorn an earth sign, screams "Possible earthquake" to any astrologer.

These notes are for a future astrology. I did not predict an earthquake in Haiti. So far as I know no other astrologer did. This is hindsight, but the evidence for astrology here is straightforward and remarkable. Some day astrologers will be able to do so many things they can't do yet, mainly because the so-called "scientists" who denounce it without examining it are putting a roadblock in front of any general recognition of our science's validity, and therefore preventing its study on any wide scale. Only we pioneers know how fantastically valuable it is.

Warren "Mars" Beatty

The report for Wednesday has already been posted (below this). I just noticed something fascinating about Warren Beatty whom I mentioned this week because of the somewhat libidinous book about him. This is from a post by John Farr in the Huffington Post about Beatty, defending him as a spectacular actor, director and almost-producer: "I met Beatty unexpectedly years ago under inauspicious circumstances at the Carlyle Hotel in New York. I was a predictably awestruck kid in my early twenties, and also more than slightly in my cups that evening (for shame). Beatty was still unfailingly gracious, and I remember, intensely curious. He really listened to what I was saying; he asked questions, wanted to engage. More than any other impression, I came away thinking what an active and interesting brain he had."

The brain, as the merest tyro in astrology knows, is ruled by Aries, sign of the head and brain (as they are emphasized visually by the striking Ram's head). When a perceptive non-astrologer states that his biggest impression of an Aries person is his "active and interesting brain" this goes on the side of "evidence for astrology" in a big way.

Also, everyone I know who is interested in the twelve signs knows that Aries is a sign of youth, and usually Aries people love young people and enjoy being with them. That comes out in Farr, as a twenty-something, appreciating Beatty's interested engagement with him.

All the attention the 72-year-old Beatty is getting has something to do with Mars being the handle planet in a bucket-shaped configuration in the sky. Mars in high focus, as it is now, is denominated by Marc Edmund Jones, the discoverer of these planetary gestalts, "indomitable." People are saying how Beatty wanted to "have it all" in Hollywood, and succeeded, not only in the sexual arena. (Arena? I hope bedrooms are not becoming arenas.) Mars of course is the ruler of Aries, and Beatty, born on March 30, 1937, falls within the first decanate or face of Aries, ruled doubly by Mars. His Mercury is also in Aries. It is then fascinating that one of his first films, in 1957 when he was 20, is titled "Mars Invades the Earth!" Astrology is truly remarkable. How could anyone but stultified old fogeys and clueless boors "not believe in it"?

\Outer Patience, Inner Confidence/

There are gently uplifting influences, if we can tune in to them during the |difficult or retreat third of the week| which lasts until approximately noon (in the Western Hemisphere, later in the Eastern) on Thursday. You may feel overwhelmed by issues related to career, your standing with important people, studies, the troubles of friends, and more, and feel there is little you can do in many cases but preserve your poise, which indeed is an accomplishment. The best advice: don't panic, go slow, and do what you can while giving yourself sufficient rest in and around activities. It is not a sin to postpone certain things when you just can't do them now. "A lick and a promise" is sometimes better than whipping yourself toward a failed attempt. People will understand if you explain without whining.

Impulses toward achievement are alive in you and ought not to be stifled. You may have a tendency to amuse yourself with escapist interests rather than face tough things you need to do at some point, later or sooner. This is the time for trial runs, first drafts, sketches and the like, rather than finished works. If content with the former, you will save yourself anguish. The latter will come in a week or three.

You may appreciate someone who is frank and blunt, because his sincerity is refreshing. Both of you are going through tough times but you can, by being honest with each other, mitigate your miseries. This is someone who sinks under and then rises up, who seems to need a friendly hand yet is sufficiently shy to avoid being an encumbrance.

I have to crow because I was right! I have spent a couple dozen winters observing when the coldest weather happens, in relation to astrological events, and as you know unless you are a very careless reader, I have forecast here at least three or four times that beginning January 14 or 15 (first I said the 14th, then changed it to be safer) we would have, in general, warmer weather (of course there are always local differences). Now today (as I write, January 12) the official website of the
Weather Channel, says, at the very top, "
The two week chill across the South lasts one more day before the warm up begins." Check it out: http://www.weather.com/ . One more day after the 12th is the 13th or 14th. Eureka! Could I have been closer to exact? Further down the page it says:

Midwest

Wednesday and Thursday are the 13th and 14th. Could I have been closer to exact? And I predicted this back in the middle of December. Did any meteorologist know back then, to the day, when the warming trend would begin? No, but a student of the "ancient superstition" of astrology figured it out, without every cracking a book or taking a course in meteorology.

The better aspects of the day point to potentials of wealth and authority, ease and confidence, which might seem to contradict what I have been saying, but only in appearance. The potentials are there and are expanding, but there are trials before they can actualize.

In other words, you may feel prematurely exhilarated about impending good fortune, which could mean you don't devote enough time to helping it come about; or you could struggle on, with that vision ahead of you giving confidence to proceed effectively past current doubts and hindrances.

*A Little Persistence*

Things seem mellow and relaxed while the moon wanes; a peaceful unruffled approach is best. Today begins the |difficult third of the week|, extending through Wednesday and ending Thursday in late morning. However, the moon's approach to a sextile with Neptune and Jupiter is heartening or at least ameliorative, until Luna goes void of course at 6:44p PT | 9:44p ET | 2:44a(W) UT.

People who are gruff and outspoken have their issues to work out. They resent injustices and hold grudges until they are convinced someone is their friend. Issues with foreigners are likely, or with those who seem foreign to you.

Costs of travel and of career plans, or of educational ventures, are weighed. You can take your time with all that; decisions will be clearer late this week or next, or else by early February. Considering options is fine, but not forcing choices when the time is not ripe.

Those who are convivial and enjoyable as companions are not always wise. That does not mean they are not good companions, but that one ought to be on guard to make sure they don't lead one down the garden path toward the snake pit. Enjoying simple pleasures is fine so long as decorum and equilibrium are maintained.

Certain opportunities for satisfaction seem locked up. Either the door doesn't open or it opens on something you didn't want. The good Jupiter aspect already mentioned could lead to deeper philosophic-spiritual satisfaction, not dependent on momentary highs.

Sometimes those who do well in the world's eyes, executing successful plans admirably, still have one major desire unfulfilled, and live out their lives with the world's approval masking secret gnawing despair. These are the kinds who take their own lives unexpectedly, or, like Howard Hughes, retreat into solipsism. The spiritual answer to this is the same as the spiritual answer to everything; I shall neither lecture nor preach, for you can summon up what I would say.

Oh, considering the chart further, I see that I had better lecture and preach: Console yourself, first, with the thought that no one else, wealthy or famous or powerful or beloved, is really more secure in happiness than you, if you decide to be secure. Secondly, resolve to keep on with the hopes and plans which make the most sense to you, even if, at times like this, you spend no more than five or twenty minutes on them on a given day. A little is better than nothing. Keeping the lamp lit during the dark times, and doing that knitting or engine-tinkering or accounting or writing or painting or networking, is better than giving up. Even if it's just a little.

*Hopes Resting on Memory Revive*

It's quite a good day, in Prime Time. I think a lot of places are already experiencing my weather prophecy, that the cold wave engulfing not only most of the U. S. but many places in the world (such as Switzerland) would diminish or vanish in the second half of January and February. Where I am it is somewhat warmer already.

Intransigent males are not confined to the ranks of terrorists, although that is a major rank to contend with in one way or another (although discerning when benign neglect is the best policy is something our Administration, as the previous one, seems unable to do). Likewise in your life, males who are nutty or off on a tangent, perhaps travelers, questers for something, contentious and brazen, are likely to be playing a role, and yet you find it easier now to deal with them than in previous weeks.

The revelations about the sex life of Warren Beatty, an Aries male and so ruled by Mars, are interesting as happening while Mars goes backward in Leo the sign of romance. Retrogression often equates to reflection on the past, as his is being brought to light by a new biography, and doubtless countless individuals will be watching his old movies out of curiosity (me too, since I have just looked up his birth-chart. Pondering the charts of actors, actresses, writers and directors while watching their films is an exquisite astrological, psychological, philosophical and esthetic pleasure).

We can't neglect the earth while there are four planets in Capricorn. In winter this can be, first of all, finding the earth by removing snow; but at present it may also be advance planning for whatever needs to be done in terms of agriculture, or the culture of growing things, in seasons ahead. (If we have readers in the Southern Hemisphere of course this will be reversed, so they might be culturing crops or gardens with special attention now.)

You are determined to get things right in your life. You feel you can do this. Friends and associates fall into place as you see what function they perform in your life, and perhaps what function you perform in theirs. This is happening providentially. We are resources for one another. Still, it is probably too early to map sharply outlined plans involving large-scale cooperation.

Someone who seems helpless may be in your purview. You could get soul-satisfaction by aiding this individual, however feasible. Isolation is a sad state of mind, and a little befriending goes a long way.

Also someone you know is reviewing his or her life and feeling overwhelmed by apparent failure in actualizing hopes. This is a bittersweet state of mind because the overwhelming realizations, no matter how sobering, prepare her or him for future continued growth, both in this lifetime and a future one.

The archaic and mystical have many levels of manifestation. The past is our colorful friend, providing we take the best from it and leave the rest. Ancient writings can pull us out of lethargy and re-inspire us; partly because only the most useful tend to survive for centuries, so they have already been filtered through the race's sieve of discrimination. This can be true also of art and music.

Forecast for Saturday 9 January 2010

~Secluded Amelioration~

One of the best back-up plans for you, if you feel unsure of things, could be organizing personal possessions.

Today is Prime Time except for the Dark Hermetic Epoch (until February 5), so ordinary business or shopping could go well.

You care about your position in the world and so does everyone else; and if you think of this it may explain mysterious behavior. It is partly an ego game. But apart from that, there is legitimate desire to interact with others in a way which is spiritually exalting or internationally interesting. That can lead to a communion of hearts along lines of shared interest. Often in a relationship, both are leaders and both are followers.

Being secluded is natural, whether or not the weather in your area is loosening up from the winter cold wave (which I believe will recede in the second half of January and February). It is always good to turn one's thoughts to G*d. Worship may seem out of fashion, but it shall come back into fashion at some point down the road. I do not mean necessarily formal worship, often embroiled in the artificiality of priesthoods or organized business-like ministries, but sincere personal worship. If humanity does not realize that it is cooperating with a greater Power than itself it is doomed to perpetual ignorance and self-caused disaster. That Power is the Supramental, and it is Love, and it is indeed Power, and It is personal more than impersonal, and greater and wiser than the most advanced formulae and comprehension of any human scientist.

Certain hopes in regard to wealth, or in other words means of expanded living, are being fortified through (a) your efforts to execute intelligent financial plans and (b) an emanating spirit of wise planning and administration of funds. What you have learned deep inside yourself about your relation to the Highest is not unrelated to your income.

Certain kinds of interference you have recently felt, from young males principally but not wholly, are fading away but still present in your mind. Anyone who cares about his bloated self-image more than about other human beings and their suffering or happiness is ripe for a put-down, not by you but by the cosmos. In fact, if you try to do it yourself you may make it harder for the cosmos to do it more effectively. Shakespeare's comedies reveal how arrogant ones come to grief. We may laugh while they suffer, but their suffering turns to something better by the end of the comedy, or it would not be a comedy.

~Letting Success Germinate~

We seem to be in a peculiar transition time. (When I say "we" I mean everyone on Planet Earth, but of course you will automatically be able to interpret what I say in terms of your own life, which obviously differs from anyone else's; so that the generalities I announce will become specificities for you. The genius of astrology is that the pertinent generalities at one time are strikingly different from the pertinent generalities at another time. So it is that what I say could guide you even though I do not know you or your individual horoscope. I have found over the decades that pertinent general but timely statements for the whole human race, as determined by astrological research, are usually more helpful to me than pondering the complex progressions and transits to my natal horoscope. Therefore I began this forecast as Cosmic Piper more than ten years ago.)

The peculiarity of this transition time is that Mercury remains retrograde until January 15, a week from today, though the Dark Hermetic Epoch lasts until February 5, while the harsh aspects to Saturn gradually diminish, quite strikingly as I observe the daily charts. We are not exactly "at a loss" but are able to retreat mentally and then regrasp our destinies in a fresh way unencumbered by the conscious or unconscious errors (or sins) which have been beaten out of us, or stripped away from us, by the difficulties of recent weeks.

On Friday the moon remains in the Via Combusta (early Scorpio) but forms good aspects with the four planets in Capricorn. It's a time to be sober, slow, and methodic. You see through the pretenses of the powerful, or even of your teachers, and yet you can respect them for what is not pretense but firm wisdom. It is important to separate one from the other. Those in a position "over" you in some hierarchical sense may appreciate your kind and humble criticism if it suggests answers to them they have unconsciously been fumbling for.

You appreciate what is solid in you, not understood yet able to stand up over the years against the misunderstandings cast against you or upon your path. That is something to rejoice in, even though you cannot share it with anyone, for to do that would seem pretentious. Keeping it to yourself, gleefully, you are empowered to expect even more from life and yourself. You would probably sense, even without these forecasts, that the time is not ripe for the next satisfying steps forward toward your goals. For most, that will be late in January or, perhaps more securely, early in February.

Wealth can be a karmic burden to some, if it makes them lazy. Poverty can be a blessing to some, if it impels them toward valorous activity. You have everything you need, for that is a law of the cosmos. Lacks are there to be filled in by action. Mental and spiritual action may come first though, for many, especially during this period.

Too many think they have the prerogative of supervising or controlling others. This is certain to lead to strife and harsh treatment from both sides. The urge to control can be used effectively in teaching, for example, or business, where a natural hierarchy is required for efficiency in an organization. As a matter of fact you do control, that is, your own body and mind; and from there the world will grant you control over facets of it reflecting what you have brilliantly controlled in yourself. (Have I given the secret law of success in one paragraph?)

}A Little More Christmas{

Merry Christmas! to those in the Eastern nations where that holiday is celebrated today.

I am writing on the 6th, which is Epiphany in the Christian calendar, and this morning I felt impelled to listen to some Christmas music. The result was an amazing spiritual uplift, as if today itself were Christmas (being Christmas Eve in Russia and elsewhere). Some people have denominated Epiphany "little Christmas" although to me it might be "esoteric Christmas," celebrating the visit of the Wise Men to the newborn Baby King. The Wise Men were astrologers, according to the best translation of the Greek New Testament available, the New English Bible.

And, according to my desk encyclopedia, "Epiphany also celebrates the (much later) baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist and Jesus' first miracle, performed at Cana" in Galilee, namely, Jesus's transformation of water into wine at a wedding feast, at the behest of his mother, who said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." (John chapter 2)

And so if you are reading this on Wednesday, you may partake of the magic in some miraculous way known only to yourself.

Thursday also contains magic, with the moon in Libra trine Jupiter and Neptune in Aquarius--albeit the moon is in the Via Combusta. That is not always depressing, and need not be today, although it can make us feel lost or unfocused. That can be good if it impels us toward regrasping destiny from a broader viewpoint.

Organizing your intellectual faculties to reorient yourself in a mysteriously changing (yet stable enough) world is your opportunity. This requires facing the peculiarities of those in high places who wage war in one way or another--either the literal warriors of our peculiarly incompetent meddling in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, or intellectual or spiritual warriors who are trying to bring the world around to their more advanced viewpoint. War is what makes everything chaotic, symbolized now by Mars in Leo (the President's sign) going backward. If you think American forces know what they are doing, I invite you to read this chilling report of how they botched up intelligence to the point that 8 American C.I.A. operatives were killed: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/06/world/06intel.html?hp . As I have pointed out repeatedly, "we" (Americans) do not know what "we" are doing "over there," and contrary to what some people think, often doing nothing is better than making things worse. This incident, if you read it carefully, is not just a random, accidental incident which could happen to anyone. It is rather a perfect paradigm case showing that Americans in the military, including the supposedly competent C.I.A., just do not understand the alien culture they are meddling with, or the individuals who represent it. And without that understanding, nothing they do can be right.

All this seems important today because the aforesaid backward-traveling Mars is exactly quincunx the sun and Venus (together in Capricorn). I would guess, and I hope, all who are involved in the interminable culture-war are rethinking their approaches, for if they do not, fierce things can happen (again).

Your immediate needs can be met with dispatch. That could make you feel happily on top of things. If one thing is intractable, turn to another, and find what can be easily done, for doing it will give you strength to do something else. There is a bit of luck in finding what you need today, although because of the Via Combusta (as well as Mercury retrograde) I would postpone any large purchase (unless it is something of which you have no doubt whatever, and know you can get a full refund easily). A feeling of luck could make you almost giddy, until you realize you need to use that luck by keeping on with immediate tasks, which, imbued with Leprechaun charm, become almost fun.

Beauty and the arts can be magical, with Venus conjoined to the sun and both approaching a sextile with Uranus. In little things, as in taking a shower or bath, you celebrate your own body and treat it well. We have been dealing with serious stuff over the holidays, and that continues, but pressures are relaxing. Today you could immerse yourself in a sort of rebirthing process if you take it lightly, while making allowance for the necessities of life.

}Tangles of Insight Tangling or Untangling{

We're in the |difficult third of the week|, which lifts Thursday afternoon. The moon is uncomfortable because of its nearness to Saturn and squares with four planets in Capricorn. Dealings with aged people are likely, and a need for straightening out misunderstandings as far as possible with those in authority or in educational positions.

Many may have issues with computers or other technological devices such as phones, or find that communications are delayed or tangled. Most of us feel we have a backlog of correspondence weighing on us, and some of it seems so irrelevant that we attend to it only out of politeness. Yet some of that reluctantly followed-up communication could have good results eventually.

Shining by reflected light, we pursue studies of literature, the arts or sciences, or philosophy, and this gradually lifts us above ourselves. To get a grasp of current politics and warfare, we need to study politics and warfare in the past. "Ain't gonna study war no more" goes an old spiritual, which Mahalia Jackson used to sing, and to me that means that if we study war it should only be in order to learn how to end war.

Measuring music is in the cards, that is, estimating what music you want to hear and what you want to dispense with. I am finding Slacker radio helpful in that regard (free Internet radio with much customization of what you hear).

You can also measure out mysterious factors you need to research, in order to get a better handle on your education as related to career hopes. "Miles to go before we sleep."

The nation-wide (perhaps world-wide, I do not study the weather assiduously) cold of the past few weeks, as I have said here twice or thrice already, may end on January 14 or 15 (I have moved the date ahead by one day). I expect late January and February to be warmer than December and early January, in most places. I mention this again because today I see a report that the fruit crops in Florida may be damaged by the current cold spell.

I see people in a little cabin or cottage surrounded by snow, smoke coming from the chimney, a fire in the fireplace; they sit around a table playing cards while drinking festive drinks. The scene from our view through the window is more cozy and charming than it feels to those enmeshed in it. Yet I hope they will feel their spirits lifted, with joy returning.

It seems that those involved in foreign wars (for which your taxes are paying) have a Richard Burton complex, that is, the first Richard Burton whose travels and exploits in Arab lands have been fascinating to several generations. What precisely they are doing they do not know, but they want the adventure, and do not know why. It is a compulsion, and it is happening, and it may be endangering our lives, and you are footing the bill.

\Avoiding Alien Involvement/

The good omens pointed out yesterday seem to have faded. Today we are in the |difficult third of the week| also called the |retreat third of the week| when, as now, we are in the Dark Hermetic Epoch and especially the center of that Epoch when Mercury is retrograde.

Further, after the moon has formed its opposition with Uranus it will be void of course, beginning at 9:26a PT | 12:26p ET | 5:26p UT, until it enters Leo at 8:59p PT | 11:59p ET | 4:59a(W) UT, almost twelve hours.

It's a time to keep your faith strong in the face of disappointment or discouragement.

Classical learning, as from ancient Greece, might turn up as significant. You are determined to "make all knowledge yours" at least in your special field of endeavor. This requires dedication and some sacrifice of other time-wasting desires.

You seem to have the means to enjoy yourself, perhaps with abandon, when you can; perhaps the void-of-course period releases some inhibitions.

I am afraid we, meaning Americans collectively (I am not excluding you Europeans when I write that way, you just make up a much smaller segment of the readership) are under-estimating the Muslim cultures, the Arab and Persian cultures. "One man sharpens another" says the book of Proverbs, and by our arrogant meddling in their affairs we are sharpening their ability to fight back and may "reap the whirlwind" after thus sowing the wind. This is very disturbing to me. I do not think "we" know what "we" are up against. Please let us not make the predictions of the 2012 pessimists a self-fulfilling prophecy. Hey guys, there are nuclear weapons easily available, and more easily available every month, to the groups we call "terrorist." We had better figure out some better way of dealing with that than exacerbating the situation by stirring up the hornets' nest.

It is well to hang close with those you trust, family or neighbors or friends, not so much for physical protection as psychological insulation from disturbances you don't need to get involved in. (Now re-read that sentence thinking of the United States as an entity. Would it not have been smart if we had done just that in the past 40 years rather than get mixed up stupidly in Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan?)

You may become aware of the differences between classes, as it were, or those who seem to fail at everything versus those who have a way of insinuating their way into high places with little effort. Even the latter have their troubles today, and so may have some sympathy with the former.
