This is the beginning of the Chinese New Year, which always begins during the New Moon of Aquarius for some reason only the ancient Chinese sages comprehend--this time, the Year of the Tiger.

I gave an extended discourse on Mercury Retrograde (until February 4) and the Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch (until February 24) in the Sunday report, which I shall not repeat.  But it is interesting to note that the Truckers' Convoy for Freedom in Canada is something like an extended "holiday," if you will, for the truckers and many supporting them.  I applaud that!  It is a welcome chance for RE-evaluating oppressive vaccination policies.  Often we feel like 'going on holiday' or 'on vacation' during the MR period.  Vacation not vocation!  However, my vocation as Cosmic Piper continues with whatever factors might be hobbling it. There are plenty, and you may be feeling that concerning your own situation, as do for example Joe Rogan, Justin Trudeau, and countless others.  'Muddling through' is the correct term in the Queen's English. 

Tuesday:

'A broken bridge spanning a rapid stream' is a warning to 'go warily and with much circumspection into the narrow walks of competitive life.'  There could be catastrophe or liquidation.  One needs to be self-supporting, to a degree, yet of considerable service to others because one stands in need of help and sustenance from them also.  The mercy of Heaven can prevent complete collapse.  It may be needed also at the emotional level to prevent or cure heartbreak caused by jealousy, chagrin or bitter resentment.  

'An oval-shaped mirror' is an impressionable mind which retains little, for when the impressing object is withdrawn nothing remains.  But actually something does remain in memory, and there is a tussle of lost or recaptured impressions which might resemble 'a maze' of profitless researches.  One is fond of enigmas and has great ingenuity with which to juggle them.  This sounds like an unsettling dream in which one keeps trying to solve a puzzle or find a way.  Why can't we just fix all that and make it come out with a happy ending, since it is our own dream?

Perhaps it is because we resemble 'a train entering a tunnel' (or a truck pulled up at the capitol in Ottawa, wheels taken off).  Darkness is necessary temporarily before the light can return.  Also, by disappearing we are being courteous to others, getting out of their way.  When we reappear it may be in the guise of 'a veiled prophet of power.'  We have tapped the untapped resources inherent in personality, and dramatized something great through 'unerring insight into the motives of men.'  This establishes us in supremacy along some line, by mastering pertinent natural forces.

What 'a butcher' means could depend on whether you are vegetarian or not.  However, Charubel says that this symbol indicates someone 'dangerous, selfish, crafty and cruel.'  When I worked as a messenger in New York City I was sometimes sent to the slaughter-houses on 10th Avenue, and did not enjoy that; yet Richard Rodgers's musical composition Slaughter on 10th Avenue is beautiful and moving.  You might take leave of the butcher and invite friends into your 'tastefully furnished room with a large wax candle on a round table in the center.'  That is, you love your home and want to share it with someone special. (Or conversely someone may invite you into their space.)

A preponderance of planets in earth signs (five) is coinciding with the trucker protests in Canada, and possibly in the U. S.  Heavy-duty!  Some supplies may be cut off, but I for one blame the tyrannical governments harassing the truckers with pointless mandates, not the truckers who are just defending their bodily freedom.  'A dark archway with ten logs at the bottom' could represent a situation you want to investigate thoroughly to 'get to the bottom of this.'  One can 'direct one's own destiny consciously.'  As for 'a barometer,' it is a measuring instrument and so one could use 'unusual keenness of observation' to determine 'measurable dependabilities.'  

Mars as the high-focus planet in a bundle-shaped chart, and exalted in Capricorn, is strong, something like 'a cavalier fully armed.'  He might be engaged in physical or military self-defense, or polemical defense as many are these days in the world of political disagreement.  'While outwardly cautious and suave in manner, he is ever alive to his own interests and on the defensive.'  Or at a more comfortable level, 'a heart surrounded by an aureole' signifies 'an affectionate and devoted nature, one who will center his or her affections on a single object and continue steadfast all through life.'  This is an example of quite rare devotion.  Such 'whole-heartedness and concentration' could bring 'success where others have failed.'

}Fumbling Toward Enlightenment{

It seems crucial to orient ourselves to the remaining portion of the Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch.  Here is the pattern:

December 29 Dark Hermetic Epoch began . . . [January 14 Mercury turned retrograde . . . February 4 Mercury turns direct] . . . February 24 new Bright Hermetic Epoch begins (until April 26 when another Dark Hermetic Epoch begins, lasting until June 20)

The coming week offers a chance to REthink what has been going on for the past month and settle our minds a bit, to get our bearings, realizing that we are going through a REcalculation or REestimation of what we are doing or trying to do.  (The DHE is all very much like the central MR period at its center, though not quite as intense.  Sometimes, however, it can be at least as intense.)  

I'll talk about my own experience a little so you can compare it with your own.  First, the shadowy, unsettling portion:  I have had much delay through technological matters.  Today my computer was working much slower than usual, for no reason known to me.  Pages took forever to load, it seemed.  Last night I had trouble with a streaming service and contacted its customer support, only to find that the chat person didn't understand my question and wasted about 20 minutes of my time not-giving me an answer, though finally I figured out what was wrong and fixed it myself.  Not everything technological goes wrong during the MR or DHE, but enough does to make these periods difficult at times, like walking on chewing gum or through ankle-deep mud.  I forgot twice to buy coffee when I went shopping and so spent a week making do with some tea bags I found.  Not a tragedy but typical of the period.  One can forget things.  Things get out of pattern.  Contacts with people, whether by phone, in person, mail or email, seem oddly askew, though sometimes they can be lucky, and sometimes they appear to be almost miraculous, as though the universe were trying to put you in touch with some individuals, or keep you from others, by odd coincidences.  (Right now, as I type, the screen does not move up when I get to the bottom and I have to do it by hand so I can see what I'm typing.  This is way out of pattern.)  

On the positive side, there is a quest for the unusual, the new, the 'out of pattern.'  This is mixed with an interest in the past.  There is both REsearch toward the new and REcollection of the old, sometimes mixed together.  For example, for at least 50 years I have found that during the MR or DHE periods I find myself reading about UFOs or flying saucers.  Or about psychic phenomena of some sort.  This time, just two days ago, I found that Joe Rogan had interviewed Travis Walton (abductee) in one episode, and Bob Lazar (whistleblower of government possession of and study of anti-gravity crafts) in another.  Fascinating stuff, and I recommend the Bob Lazar interview (if you have Spotify just type his name in Search and you will find it).  Mercury retrograde does not mean that everything you hear about is wrong or questionable but that it is frequently unusual or surprising, REquiring REvised thinking to comprehend.  

But that can be quite exciting.  A pitfall can be getting involved in scams or questionable or definitely sham negotiations or purchases.  Use your credit card abstemiously!  One wants to try 'out of pattern' things and that can be good but it can also be expensive or dangerous, or else just fatuous.  

Fatuous?  Not everything that seems useless is really so, I think.  What good does it do me to know about Bob Lazar and Travis Walton?  If I were to spend all my time getting involved in UFO research and diving down those Saucer-covered rabbit holes, that could be hurtful to me or to my proper destiny.  But getting a taste of those things could be stimulating and exhilarating.  It's a matter of proportion.  

Conspiracy theories, or conspiracy facts?  Those too are likely to turn up in a big way during MR or DHE.  I appreciated learning a lot from Rogan's interview with Dr. Robert Epstein, for example, though he does not have good things to say about Google, on which and through which I post these reports.  Will Google censor me if I keep writing about Epstein?  I don't know, not so far as I know, but such twisted complications and suspicions are likely to come up during the MR and DHE.  

On the good side, there is the Supreme Good, G*d.  That is, your spiritual path, whatever it may be, becomes deeper and more illuminating during the DHE, which might seem paradoxical unless we REmember that much deep meditation, and many REvealing dreams, come with the night, and that when the sun is absent one often (even if only through reading or watching some streaming video) seeks inner light more assiduously.  

We could speculate more extensively about what all this means.  Are there really two different kinds of time, or two different dimensions of experience, one during the DHE and one during the BHE?  I tend to think so.  I leave such speculation to you.  I hope this REport helps you navigate the next few weeks more consciously and peacefully.

The Mercury Retrograde period (until February 4, next Friday) can feel like ''a head and a hand separated from a body;' in other words, we feel discombobulated, separated from people while needing to re-learn how to coordinate thought and action.  One might not realize one's mistakes until they need correction.  But correction is possible, for 'a vestal lamp is burning brightly.'  One might find one's thoughts 'estranged from all that is mundane and sordid' while one has 'an intuitive perception of eternal verities.'  This can make up for any lack of easy coordination in carrying on activities.  The spiritual more than the material is sometimes the order of the day during MR times. 

Venus approaches Mars, good for love life, theoretically, but these two and five other planets are in Saturn-ruled signs, making things more morose, serious and delayed.  So we have 'a popularity that proves ephemeral.'  One cannot depend on applause for sustainment, but rather on one's own stability of being.  If one gets approbation at one moment, that could be replicated in the future, so there is no need to be upset when the applause fades away.  For more lasting gains one might become one of 'a party entering a large canoe,' feeling sure of oneself while acting with others in whatever commands one's own and their attention.  There can be effectiveness through group ordering. 

The dusty or misty envelopment of the past is with us while Mercury is retrograde, and this can be a blessing rather than a detriment.  'A ruin: the remains of an ancient massive wall with an archway therein' affords scope for wandering within what is retrospective yet promising, for the archway in it could open into a smoother future.  The lessons of experience are highlighted while both Mercury and Venus seem to go backward.  And one of the day's symbols is 'the planet Venus' as denoting 'a person of much refinement, enamored of the beautiful in nature and art, who delights in the company of the opposite sex.'  All this can be subtle, indirect, questionable and meandering during the MR period, not without value though that be indefinable.

Sagittarius can be a sign of enlightenment, and we have 'a vestal lamp burning brightly' to suggest 'an elevated and superior mind given to the study of things essentially spiritual.'  Aspiration and intuition combine 'in the silence of one's own chamber' where one may find 'the key to many of the higher mysteries of life and thought.'  However, 'letting light into dark places' could result in 'reviling and bitterness in others' who do not want to be convinced or converted. 'A huge rock rent by a flash of lightning' has only its own obtuseness to blame; otherwise it would have welcomed and absorbed the dazzling flash.

With six planets in Saturn-ruled signs, people are serious about a lot, and often convinced of their positions, and so 'a flag turned into an eagle' is their conviction developing its wings through loyalty to a political, religious or other cause.  This is a dedicated dramatization of a defense of chosen values.  Do those wings also have feet?  Then 'a party entering a large canoe' is yourself and cohorts adjusting details and preparing motion for an envisaged purpose.  The keyword, Ordering, suggests 'exceptional capacity for bringing all proper relationships to a point of effectiveness in any given exigency.'  

Despite the apparent urgency of things (Saturn square Uranus), Mars sextile Jupiter plus Luna square Neptune bring out softer potentials.  'A man driving a farmer's horse and cart' is 'unambitious, quite contented with his lot.'  This is ourselves in our relaxed moments when we realize that we have 'a good thing going' if we just attend to basics.  Then on the esthetic side 'the planet Venus' indicates 'refinement' with 'partiality to the ornamental.'  One might be 'enamored of the beautiful' in both nature and art, and maybe the human body.

As the sun (by our geocentric perspective) moves toward a conjunction with Saturn and square with Uranus, while Saturn controls all the anciently known planets except Jupiter and Luna, many feel like 'a lion in an open arena' who is captive and bound.  Yet the keyword Escapement shows that it is possible to regain 'both wisdom and freedom.'  Some 'are of greater service to the race when left to their own resources and given full freedom of action than when bound to a narrow or restricted walk in life.'  What could help is 'a serpent coiled around an uplifted beacon' which lights the way.  Foresight and circumspection give solid prospects for success.  People in government or diplomacy may get your attention.  

Many will have 'boundless resources of vitality, recuperating very soon from illness' as if they had the energy of 'a gigantic dragon tree belonging to the Canary Islands.'  Then, while all is well with the body, one might study 'an astrological chart in square form' or any schematism which gives prescient insight so that one can guide others in a just, kindly manner.  

'Beautifully gowned wax figures' have a strong impact on consciousness, whether that be erotic or idealistic, curious or inspirational. Through their fame notorious or outstanding figures dramatize values or mistakes.  In that way they nourish 'the human soul receptive to growth and understanding.'  With avidity one might 'enter into the kaleidoscopic patterns of personal relationship with unbounded enthusiasm.'

With all the evidence of high-tech manipulation online, as outlined by Dr. Robert Epstein for three hours on Joe Rogan's show, we may see Google and YouTube and Facebook as 'foxes running apace in the moonlight,' using skill and cunning for their livelihood, predatory and zealous in pursuit of their designs.  Craftily they 'depend on the activity and industry of others for their means of support, and eventually will be in danger of excommunication, exile or imprisonment.'  Not yet, unfortunately.  I support Brave browser, rather than Google Chrome, as well as Gab and its Dissenter browser.  Dr. Epstein is Left, not Right, in his political views, but knows from assiduous research that Google skews its search-engine results to support Left positions and candidates.  Therefore the rest of us are, in relation to Google, like 'a target pierced by a rapier,' although Epstein is trying to make Google the target.  I applaud him because of his implicit honesty.  

Luna in Scorpio sextile Mercury retrograde in Capricorn could put you in touch with 'a student of nature lecturing,' or some scientist or exponent of natural truths whose explanations are enlightening and liberating.  Getting down to essentials on your personal level could make you like 'a child born of an eggshell,' regenerated from 'the illimitable potentialities to be found in each immediate moment of self-realization.'  This is trusting in 'the ever-present sustainment of the auric egg or self-matrix' which fosters 'ultimate resourcefulness.'

The Mercury Retrograde period (until February 4) can REveal to us sustainment from the past or from ancestry, such as 'a spacious park with a baronial mansion in the background' which could REpresent your current home, or a possible future one, or one REcalled sentimentally.  Where are your 'crown and scepter,' or have you forgotten them?  You may be 'entitled to more than you possess,' and have 'powers of which you are unconscious.'

Mars is strong by its configurations and its location at the first degree of Capricorn, for therein it is exalted.  There are war rumblings in the Russia-Ukraine situation; we have 'a vane of which the arrow is pointing north' to suggest 'a vacillating and uncertain disposition falling away into negation and ineptitude.'  'Many enterprises will be undertaken and abandoned.'  However, 'an archer drawing a long bow' is skilled both manually and in thought, with a faculty for teaching or prophesying.  His mind is set on things 'remote from his environment' and he may travel far physically or mentally.  

'Two bulls fighting' depicts disagreeable, unsociable individuals, fault-finders who lose their tempers or are hypercritical.  This could happen with moon in Scorpio and the Via Combusta during a |difficult third| period.   I leave to you the interpretation of 'a lofty building, with nave and massive pillars on each hand.'  Mars was at this degree on 9/11/2001 when such a building was demolished.  More happily, Charubel says that the emblem can show 'appreciation of the sublime in architecture' and 'feelings of veneration for the sacred and antique.'  

That would help, in view of the next symbol: 'Three stained-glass windows, one damaged by bombardment.'  This emblem also was prominent on 9/11/2001.  Would that only a window had been damaged!  The keyword, Commemoration, shows how we try to transform tragedy into deep teaching.  The individual has a 'responsibility for exalting whatever he may draw to pertinence.'  One might do this by being 'a performer of a mystery play,' interpreting the world and the individual to each other' in a subtle way which does not just mystify but 'heightens the values derived from experience.'

Yes, life can be mystifying during a Dark Hermetic Epoch (until February 23, with the hardest part until February 4), and we can be agitated about either international affairs or issues such as the vaccination mandates.  I know of no simple remedy except to keep up with sanity-preserving routines while being open to further enlightenment which can come through meditation, dreams, or daydreams as well as through spiritual study.

Someone precocious and promising may or may not develop his or her talents, but appears like 'a cherry tree in full blossom.'  'A man standing on a rocky eminence with arms folded, in a contemplative mood,' is self-possessed, and confident of the cause he has espoused.  

Likewise, 'an Indian chief demanding recognition' has 'uncompromising inner integrity' and so is inflexible.  'A council of ancestors' are proud of, and uphold, their antecedence.  'Self ultimately must fulfill itself' through self-integrity.  One can tune in to guidance from the deep past out of which one has taken one's birth.  

'A woman nude, looking at her reflection in a pool' could display dalliance and self-love leading to entanglements.  She is sympathetic, and has artistic taste or skill, though perhaps egotistical.  'A boy and girl standing with arms entwined' have finesse and adaptability.  There is versatility, and perhaps duplicity, or else skill in being a connecting link between peoples or human types, or even political parties.  The 'inflexibility' of the previous paragraph is at the level of principle, while concurrent adaptability yields successful strategy.

'A spade protruding from the soil' is an emblem of discovery of 'dark secrets of Nature' or other hidden facts and connections, through protracted work, incisive mind and strong purpose, ignoring contrary advice.  'A Chinese mandarin in an official robe of purple, gold and blue' has merit in diplomatic or governmental work.  Secrets are entrusted to him.  Inherent dignity allows him to associate with persons of high estate, and he emanates authority.  

Someone 'outwardly a babe but inwardly a giant' is close to 'the kingdom of heaven.'  His or her inner nature is not understood and so he or she is not popular.  Perhaps she or he 'stands alone in a dark and gloomy valley, and a ray of brilliant light comes direct from the heavens on the crown of her or his head.'  This person has a mission to accomplish, living 'a life beyond his day;' 'a cyclic man, not a time man.'  

Our cast of characters is spiritually oriented, including 'The Pope.'  He has developed his abilities while climbing to his position, and wins appreciation through sacrifice and sanctity.  'A Hindu healer' 'provides a spectacular ministry for the minds and bodies of all.'  His or her 'spiritualized self-discipline achieves a magical ordering of the whole course of events.'

'A deserter from the navy' could be any one of us when we come to disagree with companions or associates on some matter.  "This is just not right" we feel, and so are defiant.  That is 'psychological courage in repudiating meaningless loyalties.'  In regard to these or other matters, we 'expand facilities of the reason,' perhaps being, or attending to, 'a student of nature lecturing.'  We find explanations for what is going on so that there can be 'practical application of all values.'  

'A fox running apace in the moonlight' could be subtle and crafty, predatory, relying on chance plus cunning for a livelihood. He could be zealous but has to be secretive, for some incidents 'cannot bear the light of day.'  He might be occasionally cruel, depending on others for support.    In contrast, we have 'a man walking with bent head, leaning upon a staff.'  He may endure misfortune and disappointment, but his resignation to the will of Heaven gives him consolation.  A patient and firm will has equipped him for a long arduous journey.   

I try to avoid political advocacy here, but that does not mean I have no opinions.  'A warrior in bright armor with drawn sword, pursuing a savage multitude' could be a politician or military man, or could be yourself insofar as you feel empowered ethically to carry out a mission.  Charubel proclaims: "A White Magician!  Go and conquer.'  More passively, one might inherit, or otherwise enjoy, 'a spacious park with a baronial mansion in the background.'  This might indicate an inherited estate.  Or it could be a remembered glorious dwelling such as a childhood or vacation home.  Such luxury, tangible or intangible,  fosters a foundation for hopes and activities.

'Medical men engaged in a post-mortem examination' could be the world-wide awakening of medical men and others to the horror of what the vaccines have done to many individuals.  Steve Kirsch is one of the most adamant researchers and campaigns to point out what has been going on, hidden to us by our government and mainstream media, and I recommend reading his work.  A happier view of the day comes with 'the trunk of a large tree covered with moss, and hollow'' indicating 'one who will outlive the other members of his family and will probably be the last of his race.'  This could be romantic memories of hallowed times in your personal history.  A grand trine in earth signs (for today with Luna's help) could yield pleasant reassuring experiences.  

The moon in Virgo conduces to getting ordinary tasks done, like 'a fat boy mowing the lawn.'  This is 'practical attention to the immediate needs of the individual as a member of the group.'  We participate in society because 'social incentives inevitably come to overbalance more primitive instincts and appetites.'  If there should be 'an unexpected thunderstorm' Nature is helping us to be alert to 'every shifting pattern of events.'  What seems accidental could be 'a climax of experience.'

Consult 'a book on which stands a compass and an hourglass.'  A book of wisdom plus an atlas and an astrological ephemeris?  'A scientific and versatile mind is disposed to the study of the laws of nature.'  He or she could discover how 'the elements of space (compass) and time (hourglass)' are either eliminated or made serviceable.  We all seem to do this in our own ways as phenomenological scientists-in-chief of our own lives.

'A great concourse of people and great excitement; possibly a funeral procession' is not to be taken literally but shows the squares of three planets in Aquarius with Uranus in Taurus bringing out agitation, sometimes in regard to health, sometimes accidents, crime or politics.  For safety all have to make right choices.  'A man is standing at the junction of cross roads, not knowing which way to go.'  Indecision can be weakness if it goes on too long, though in this Dark Epoch it is normal to be somewhat less decisive than usual.  

'A man lying asleep upon a sheaf of corn, with viands at his side' is experiencing lassitude, 'dreaming of wealth while others are making it, neglecting opportunities which lie close at hand.'  This again could be one response to Mercury Retrograde.  A better response would be to emulate 'a tortoise,' 'one to whom all tasks are trivial, who is not dismayed by the prospect of unending toil.'  Through 'steadfastness, patience and endurance he will attain to the position he has set out to gain for himself.'  

Venus also is retrograde, though in good wide aspects to Uranus, Jupiter and Neptune, leading us to 'an old bridge over a beautiful stream.'  We appreciate and conserve both natural resources like the stream and dependable man-made structures like the bridge, which could lead to 'an old adobe mission.'  When the present is confusing or troubling, things already built and established are comforting.  We have 'a heritage of enduring ties which we must neither neglect nor underrate.'  Both physical and psychological certainties have continuing value as manifest in their durability.

Being 'beneath the paw of a lion rampant' is no fun, but some on both sides of the vaccination controversy may feel that way.  The claims of the pro-vaccination 'authorities' are unraveling.  The claims of the 'not vaccination but early treatment' people are being vindicated.  Some on both sides may feel 'impotent' because some on the other side are 'rampant.'  When will we grow up into mutually recognized American liberty?  'A tripod with flames of fire issuing from a brazier' is the aspiration of 'an ambassador, consul, spiritual researcher, or explorer' purifying restless efforts until they are concentrated and successful.  

'A secret business conference' does not sound good unless oneself is profiting from the secrets.  Or, there could be 'effective allegiances among principal personalities' in 'an inner circle of associates.'  On a more individual side one could be mastering one's particular talents, like 'a sculptor building all experience into a personal fulfillment.'  

'A beautiful star of the color and size of the planet Venus shines brighter and brighter, then disappears.'  'Sic transit gloria,' one might say, yet meanwhile there is a mighty genius, poet, painter or musician in our midst, in whose creations we can revel.  As for politics, who deeply believes that we can find a true leader like 'a shepherd on the mountain top with crook in hand, looking out for the locality of his sheep'?  Some may think this is Trump, others X.  Charubel says that he or she 'will be called to be a leader and commander of a society, community or nation' -- 'a ruler indeed.'

There's an emphasis on effort, and the one who makes gigantic efforts is a giant indeed.  'A giant of monstrous dimensions' is a prodigy, whether physically or mentally.  Leo is a sign of admiration of those who deserve admiration.  Many of them are glad caretakers of those dependent or less self-assured, and so could be like 'a man walking beside a cow, with his hand on her back, bringing her home from the pasture at eventide.'  Whom do you care for in this way? Or who has his or her hand on your back?

Some who have acting gifts, and like to display themselves dramatically or comedically, have really deep and sympathetic natures, which some may not realize, taking them to be mere imitators.  But behind that 'mask representing the face of a hound' is someone humane and sympathetic who attracts friends.  During the |difficult third| we may be 'given to contemplation and philosophical musings' as if frequenting 'a dark and lonely pool overhung by wooded banks.'  One might be pervaded by 'a peace which none will be able to disturb,'  'walking by the side of mother Nature, one's soul lifted to a place of rest.'  

'A flag-bearer' may express nobility and depth in a more political manner, which 'overshadows the wholly selfish concerns of man.'  'Every resource of normal life is commandeered for the greater potentiality.'  How to do this?  For one thing, watch the signs and 'signatures' which appear, conspiring to 'fit the exigencies of practical living into some pattern of possible consummations.'  This is the work of 'a woman reading tea leaves' or of anyone who supplements conscious experience with naive insight and intuition.  'Universal coordinates' could be evident even in a cup of tea.

Young people, pets, or special individuals in your life seem to require special care.  Their problems may seem to comprise 'an indescribable scene; chaos, confusion, dissolving views.'  This is not necessarily weakness of intellect or insanity but may appear to be such.  Still, there could be 'enchanting visions' such as 'a vista extending to a great distance; on either hand majestic trees with a profusion of foliage.'  Such 'landscape paintings' are your individual idealism transcending chaos.

Yt you are inclined to be tough on yourself and others.  'A harrow standing in an open field' wants to dig up the weeds of wrong beliefs, opinions, and attitudes.  One can be angular and incisive in opposing folly, though hopefully without personal animus or crude sarcasm.  What we really need are 'a sextant and compass' to steer us to the truth while we follow exact principles, limpid mathematics and definitive exploration.

People need physical and spiritual healing, and also the breadth of community resources afforded by 'a large aviary' or 'the ramifying differentiation of interest to be found in the many areas of normal life.'   The rara avis and the common sparrow both have their place.  

The personal concerns of each 'bird' become 'a matter of common welfare,' voluntarily rather than hierarchically.  During the Dark or Slow Epoch we rely deeply on the past, on established foundations such as 'an ancient bas-relief carved in granite.'  The present moment is 'a recurrent manifestation of all that ever has been or that ever can be.'  Opportunities are brought to focus through 'an absoluteness of self.'

'Two men running a race' could be politics, since many are already getting heated up over the 2022 and 2024 races.  Also it could be yourself trying to accommodate a neighbor, friend or relative by keeping up with shared events as planned.  Sports require those 'fleet of foot,' though I am among those believing the Chinese Winter Olympics ought to be boycotted because of serious Chinese Communist human rights violations.  One might choose something more daring, such as going up in a balloon 'with the dark clouds beneath.'  One experiments and investigates 'in the sky' until rising above confusion or uncertainty, crowned with success.  

Four planets in earth signs suggest 'a stretch of broken country with a fringe of woodland,' or a certain rusticity and love of nature even if one has ungracious or uncouth country manners.  People can be sincere and kind even if gruff or morose.  'Three cups of wine standing upon a table in the form of a triangle' could represent 'excessive indulgence' or 'undue enthusiasm in matters of a spiritual and mental nature.'  Though one should not to be a debauchee, mental intoxication can be exalting. 

'A chubby boy on a hobbyhorse' has his eyes on a goal ahead.  Playing is training.  He emulates his cowboy hero with indomitable determination.  Three planets in Capricorn, the sign of mountains, suggest 'a mountain pilgrimage' which is 'a total reconciliation of mind and heart in an unquestioned devotion to some worthwhile task at hand.'

While Venus is retrograde (as well as Mercury) the degree-symbols tend to repeat, and again we have from Charubel 'too revolting to be given' as he warns against 'gambling hells' and 'bad company.' 'Indulge not in stimulants and seek to develop thy higher nature; by such a course thou mayest save thyself.'  Otherwise, one might be like 'a lonely traveler with a heavy burden on his back, assaulted by ruffians.'  In general, the Mercury Retrograde era (until February 4) de-emphasizes ordinary efficiency for the sake of recollection, review, restoration.  One might be imposed upon and wronged to wake one up (ruffians); but there are also better portents:

'A wide, open seascape on which are distant sailing boats' represents complacency, but also 'learning, rectitude, distinction and honor' if one avoids the pitfalls of the first paragraph.  There may be 'a soft cloudy cumulus upon a bright horizon.'  One might 'attain high truths' while demonstrating 'gentleness and suavity.'  One's 'fortunes lie in smooth places' for one is 'regarded with favor by all.'  

However, if recovering from the attack of the ruffians one might appreciate 'many toys in the children's ward of a hospital' or 'the inescapable richness of life' no matter what 'physical and psychological limitations' there may be.  An abundance of 'toys' or other minor things allows one to 'develop the real potentialities of oneself and one's fellow human beings.'  Mercury square Uranus while retrograde makes us curious and restless, like 'a water sprite.'  'Spontaneity is required as a necessary quickening to values.'  Even unimportant activities are not drab if we are 'exceptionally sensitive to over-all implications.'

Not everything goes crazy while Mercury is retrograde, but at worst one might feel like 'a broken tree struck by a lightning flash.'  There could be 'abortive projects and vain ambitions' or even catastrophe.  Probably this would come from being distracted or neglecting essential duties assigned to you by 'the world' or yourself.  During the MR period it is often a matter of deciding quickly whether to go with the easy flow of 'out of pattern' tendencies, or stick adamantly to your schedule.  The easier, more superficial path could be like 'a series of bubbles floating in the air' which are sparkling and bright, but lack solidity, so that one might appear to be 'a mere dabbler.'  

'An oriental rug dealer' might trade in unusual items which attract people by their colorful, exotic nature.  Various advantages and resources are available to us as buyers or sellers.  The world offers a consignment of goods in one form or another.  We develop human potentials by the way we use them.  It's Friday, Venus's day, and she remains in good aspect with Uranus and Neptune, so 'a bluebird is standing at the door of the house.'  If you have 'a creative alertness to the signs and portents by which the world speaks to you' Fortune will smile.

The above sentence explains a lot to those familiar with these Mercurial or Hermetic cycles.  We are already experiencing the "Mercury Retrograde Syndrome" because it has been moving very slowly for days.  Yesterday my phone went off exactly when I tried to answer an important call and I had to wait for it to reboot, making a connection and meeting impossible.  I got misleading information about something politically sensitive and had to wait for a correction, and even now the facts remain unclear.  Right now I see that Microsoft is wanting to update Windows and that is always fun.  Good things have happened also, of course, but they are 'out of pattern' and unpredictable, often unexpected.  It would pay to notice the 'out of pattern' way things happen around you.  "In strange directions runs the intricate plan." --Sri Aurobindo, Savitri

"A woman entering a convent' may have the right idea.  It has seemed to me that hiding in a cave could be the best response to Mercury Retrograde.  If one does not know how to pray, it is a good time to learn.  Says Dr. Jones:  'Life can have no satisfaction for the individual unless he is able to develop and maintain some enduring allegiance of an over-all significance.'  When one consecrates oneself one has 'the irresistible power of a true inner vision.'  But routine activities continue during the Dark or Slow Epoch, so 'boys and girls' still have to put on their 'gymnasium suits' to participate in 'the everyday potentials of human society.'  They train their powers and capacities in an animated way.  

At the emotional level there could be 'forlorn hope' because of 'loving without power to evoke response' or 'acting by impulse unallied to reason.'  We need to guard against misanthropy or jealousy.  'Loving unconditionally' is probably spoken of more often than accomplished, but trying to do it could turn the day around.  Venus, though going backward, still has good aspects and so 'a tankard set upon a table' offers some time spent with someone 'open to the reception of truth, whose passions are well regulated.'  What is simple and natural in human nature could be our refuge, with or without alcoholic lubrication.  A frank and open nature fosters sympathies with common people.  

Mercury is not only stationary but close to Saturn so there can be earnest study or research, like 'a person at the bottom of a deep ravine, with lamp in hand, looking for something.'  What you are questing for may drift to you while Mercury is motionless, as if past mental struggles were paying off in mysterious ways.  You looked for it and now it looks for you.  The last symbol may be harmless or it may be a demonic temptation:  'A man of stout make, good proportions, round rosy features, looking very merry, is dancing grotesquely.'  You or others might celebrate Mercury's "vacation" with carefree pleasures--eat, drink, dance and be merry--heedless of any lurking tomorrow.

Or not. At a deeper level this could be a realization that the thinking, plotting, conniving mind (Mercury) needs a rest, so one chooses to "live in the present" however that may go.

Mercury slowing down, before going retrograde on Friday, could make you 'too sanguine' or over-optimistic to the point of neglecting essentials, unless you 'weigh things with a large pair of scales,' measuring and estimating details for a realistic sense of how they can be put in order.  Otherwise you might settle your attention on momentary popularity or approbation, like 'a man climbing a May-pole to procure a crown of flowers at the top.'  Yet there is nothing wrong with enjoying approval and favor.

'Two arrows crossed' could be contention and strife.  The pro-vax and anti-vax factions are at it, as evidenced at a high level by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s book The Real Anthony Fauci, for which the New York Times refuses to accept ads.  But Kennedy, sure of his facts and his integrity, has challenged Fauci to sue him.  Not these two, most likely, but some of us might be tempted into a situation resulting in 'a wineglass overturned,' that is, extravagance and waste or incontinence.  However, a drinker could have 'fine intelligence, a genial nature and a convivial disposition.'  

'A Chinese laundry' suggests seclusion and lonely labor.  If one's efforts are more public they could result in 'two awards for bravery in war,' or recognition of one's dedication and idealistic leadership.  Meanwhile "a girl is surreptitiously bathing in the nude.'  She is immersing herself in 'the accepted roots of all-being,' and dramatizing her basic characteristics or bodily charms to herself at least.

We may be evaluating, measuring, estimating things like 'a person with a large pair of scales weighing something.'  The devil is cast out of the details when the details are put in a complete context.  Studies might also extend to the curious, mystical, or antiquarian, as if one were in 'a spacious hall like a museum, the walls covered with symbols and hieroglyphics.'  

Five planets in earth signs suggest agricultural projects, or plants and growing things, or 'the utilization of old and waste materials.'  The symbol is 'a plow' suggesting protracted labors undertaken with 'definition of purpose, determination and incisiveness.'  That fits with Luna square Mercury and Saturn in fixed signs.  At a lighter level we have three planets sextile Neptune, plus Mars emphasizing that planet by a square, which could result in 'a lyre lying upon a wreath of flowers,' that is, the persuasive expression of sound, music or song.  The poetic and inoffensive have subtle power, as does philosophic truth sought out and enunciated.

The |difficult third| generally cuts us down to size, as if we were 'a general accepting defeat gracefully.'  There is savvy opportunism in waiting patiently through a period of decline or delay, with 'self-cultivated grace of spirit.'  A defeated enemy might win over his conquerors in an expedient and gracious manner.  Both Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces could inspire 'a girl' to 'surreptitiously bathe in the nude.'  She has 'an irresistible desire to strip back to essentials, and gain self-renewal by immediate close intimacy with the roots of all-being.'  This is 'a successful resort to psychological renunciation in order to gain a new dimension of conscious reality.'  The keyword is Immersion.

Mercury is slowing and most are feeling its effects even before it goes retrograde on Friday.  That can include bad judgment, such as gambling or speculating foolishly.  One may feel one does not know whom to trust:  'A man is hesitating to trust himself on a wooden bridge over a chasm.' Charubel says this could be the unwarranted fear of someone 'inclined to doubt everything and even suspect his best friends.'  Well, one might better trust those friends than the bookmakers.  

'The Union Jack' could represent 'the organized nation' which can bring benefits one could not grasp on one's own, but could also curtail personal freedom.  When supervision becomes spying or censoring, red-blooded individuals rise in protest (as they will on January 23 against vaccine mandates).  When investigating things, whether for serious purposes or out of curiosity, one might feel like 'a child and a dog with borrowed eyeglasses.'  Animals as well as children have surprising competency in figuring things out, examining whatever turns up 'throughout the many dimensions of experience' (with the eyeglasses).  3D or 4D glasses, anyone?

Mars square Neptune, exact now, can be 'working through to the real significance of things' and sharing this with others (according to Marc Edmund Jones).  Could one find it in 'an ancient hieroglyphic manuscript with a retort and crucible upon it'?  The Magnum Opus or Great Work of Alchemy may be attainable by very few, yet one might be able to solve some scientific or spiritual problem or even write a dissertation on it.  Physical and mental forces may be combined and balanced, like 'two triangles interlaced, with a third superposed.'  We shall not attempt to define that third, which grants ultimate mastery.
