This fortnight happens to begin and end on Saturdays two weeks apart.

I try to restrain myself from becoming excited about a new fortnight, but every new chart looks fascinating and so I have high hopes for this period. Difficult aspects are always there; we have to plow through them. I hope the following may help.

The lighter side of things is depicted by Charubel: "A large assembly room. A large audience and a man at the piano. An artistic person, an eloquent person, a musician, a popular person." That is for a birth-chart. In this present period it suggests we could enjoy a lot of easy entertainment. We could toss forth our skills and talents and get popularity in return. We could equally enjoy seeing or hearing others do this. Maybe we could be lounge lizards. The symbols for Pluto is even more exuberant, though garishly so: "A man of stout make, good proportions, round, rosy features, looking very merry, dancing grotesquely." Merry New Year! Charubel goes on: "Denotes one who lives to eat and enjoy himself; never troubles his mind with cares; seldom thinks of the future by way of providing for the same; the present is his all; his creed is 'Let me eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow I may be "done for."'"  Okay, let's not get carried away with this! We had better get on to the more realistic parts of the chart. We can't spend our days and nights in bars and nightclubs.

Much of the chart looks business-oriented. Pluto, the sun and Mercury in Capricorn are trine Jupiter in Virgo. Though Mercury is retrograde, this is not a bad set-up for business. Probably you should stick to the methods and strategies you decided on before this period begins. If you keep implementing them faithfully they may lead you to success. "A practical business person who readily allies himself with the world's ways and with ordinary matters. One never short of expedients. A little cantankerous and not one of the pleasantest companions." Does that sound like someone we know, sometimes referred to as the Donald (Duck?). But taking this as applying to ourselves, we get so involved in our business that we sometimes are cantankerous toward those who interrupt it.

Interestingly enough, Neptune has been at the above degree since mid-September during the peak in Mr. Trump's popularity. "One never short of expedients" and "a practical business person" are the essence of his self-description! "A little cantankerous"? Who would say that of the Donald?!

"A merchant ship" is also good for business, suggesting "a successful merchant." I do not claim to predict the stock market, which perversely seems to follow its own indecipherable rules. But it seems about time that world markets should recover somewhat. In your personal life this means perhaps to be a little bold in your planning (although while Mercury is retrograde and a little before [that begins on the 5th] it is wise to stick with well-tested plans, though perhaps to be bold in implementing the most solid ones). 

More business, of a rather dark sort: "Death, with a scythe in one hand, and a bag of money in the other. A miser; one who will starve himself for gain; and one who would delight in slaughter and carnage if it would prove of some monetary advantage to himself." Interestingly enough, Pluto was in this degree on 9/11/2001, giving perhaps some support to the conspiracy theorists. Or not. Now it is Saturn which is there. It sounds a little like the credo of the Republican Party, as well as the Democratic Party at certain moments of its history. To counterbalance this is Jupiter's position, which happens to be identical with that of Rahu or the moon's north node, considered above: The popular entertainer playing the piano in a dance hall. That gives relief, but we might do well to watch out for those who are in fact monetary predators, especially when Mercury is retrograde and we might fall under their influence. If it sounds like a scam it probably is.

Perhaps that horrible degree-symbol is warning us to beware of putting money before love. That is often a problem when Venus conjoins Saturn, as she does during this whole period. The "miser" warned about in the symbol could be ourselves. Business which pushes family away could be one symptom of the syndrome. Saying "I'm too busy" to a friend could be another.

Then, since we have the symbols of easy entertainment and wild carefree dancing, we might say that self-absorbed entertainment, as in sitting and watching endless episodes of a favorite TV series, could also get in the way of real connection with other human beings. Yet the happy carefree symbols are refreshing and I hope we enjoy many such times!

Hard: Mars square Mercury, which will be going on for days to come, the first half of January, and exact on January 5 when Mercury turns retrograde. It lasts so long because Mercury slows down and turns backward right when it is exact. Ouch! I have noted over the years that this is an irritable aspect. We feel angry at people who get in our way, make noise, say or do the wrong things, laugh at the wrong time, make insulting comments, on and on. 

Easy: Mercury sextile Venus, a kind of smooth enjoyment of music, the arts, people, visual delights, the taste of food or drink, and so on. Nice for New Years' Eve. People's tastes in music and the like will probably not clash but meld happily.

Hard: Pluto square Uranus. This is a revolutionary aspect, so you are trying to revolutionize some aspects of your life and you may be succeeding, but not without a lot of sweat and tears, or just persistent consistent effort. 

Easy: Moon trine Mercury, from Virgo to Capricorn. This is why I said yesterday that many would be thinking about their careers and their technical or other skills during New Year parties or semi-parties. What have you learned, of practical value, in the past week or two? Something rather extraordinary, I would guess. You can build practically on that, and may be thinking of it even if you're in a crowd as the clock strikes midnight.

Hard: Neptune square Saturn, a realization of the real difficulty of your spiritual path. If you do not have a spiritual path, this aspect is pushing you toward finding one. If you have one, you see into your own hypocrisy or failure to embody the truths and values it teaches. That is good because it means you are trying to be honest with yourself as a basis for progress.

Easy: Moon sextile Venus, increasing late in the evening and toward the dawn of January 1. This is a sweet aspect making us feel good about one another and ourselves, able to appreciate the subtle beauty in people not evident at once on the surface. Happy New Year!

The intellectual, careful technical, hobby-like or other work and study and research you may have been doing for the past week has perhaps reached a point of culmination or perfection. You feel it is not perfect and yet it is closer to that than ever before.

Moods are usually down during the |challenging third| but fortunately it ends on the 31st about sunset (in the Western Hemisphere), making room for a happier party or New Year spirit that evening than we often have. I would guess that many will be thinking of the year ahead in terms of career, technique, skill and how that can work out in a satisfying way. I am not opposed to the party side of New Year celebrations, and yet over the years I have heard many say to me "I never really have a great party time on New Year's Eve." I think that has to do with the seriousness of the time. There are non-astrological factors at work in our calendar, which I seldom mention--they are quite mysterious--but New Year's is a sober time for good reason. We can have some fun without losing our deeper orientation to responsible fulfillment in the year ahead. It should be a time for prayer perhaps even more than merry-making. But it helps to have the |difficult third| out of the way; it lightens the mood toward optimism.

Meanwhile today we are in the thick of that karmic lesson. It seems to show us what we are doing wrong, over and over again. "What, you haven't overcome that little weakness yet? You know how it makes you suffer!" That is the nagging of the Karmic Gods. We should listen rather than talk back to them.

The mood could be down.

So we have to rise above it!

Remember the goodness you have received from the Supreme Lord. At least you have life and breath. That is worthy of thanks and praise.

Quiet gains are possible, and inward regeneration.

People are deeper than they seem on the surface. Their surface is calling to us to recognize their deep.

So a song of praise could come even from a prisoner. But let us pray for the prisoners.

Monotony is life-devaluing. We need to rise above it. Gloom keeps us from appreciating our gifts. Yet some in this world have the gift of fascinating others, and bringing color and excitement into their lives. "A woman in trailing robes waves a wand entwined by a serpent." People pay a lot of money to be entertained by such an one, be she entertainer, artist, musician or favorite companion.

Slow research has its value. It may not be recognized at the time it is done. So the one who does it may reap his rewards in privacy. Still, he may get confused. There is much that could lead him astray. He needs to beware of "false lights" and adhere to what has proved itself consistently. The world sometimes loves craziness as an escape from reality. But reality rewards those who adhere to it.

What is the hope, the desire? Sometimes we have to wait for its fruition. Meanwhile there is entertainment! Either music, drama, comedy or some sort of easy fun keeps you contented. 

The world is basically friendly and responsive. It is important to realize this when we feel despondent. The strongest influences around us (as opposed to the destructive and evil ones) want us to rise above gloom or despair, and find our spiritual self which is immune to defeatism and ready for a fresh beginning no matter how long it takes for that to bear fruit.

I could have stretched the rating to four stars, especially for business matters. Mercury trine Jupiter is good for that and for arriving at smart decisions. Mercury square Mars can be harshness, disagreement or sharp words. But Mercury sextile Venus is the opposite, a signal of harmony. 

Those aspects together prognosticate a positive time for getting things in shape for the New Year. The Dark Hermetic Epoch is with us but need not ruin things. Mercury will go retrograde on Tuesday January 5. Today may be one of the best days before then to get things in order or in shape for the next six or seven weeks.

Positive change is in the air, with an understanding of costs, budgeting and investment. 

Fun is possible, though it have an intellectual caste, as in puzzle-solving or games of skill, wit or cleverness. 

The sun's sextile with Neptune shows also that deeper matters of spiritual allegiance are being settled in your consciousness. You know to what or whom you are loyal, whom you trust and who your Teachers are. Therefore there is solace, security and guidance in and through them.

Four stars for practical matters especially. Social affairs could go well also, but there is a sense of urgency keeping you on the trail of a project. 

The man in armor feels brave and dauntless, yet he is cautious and circumspect the better to protect himself. The safety he finds for himself he promotes also for his fellow beings. When a girl with her white lamb passes by he senses her heavenly artlessness, so far from his own trained habitual cares. (We are both of these figures and need to be each in turn.)

Those in the airplane hovering overhead are reflecting on their lives. Beneath them is a dark archway with logs at the bottom; they can see them, even count them when no one below would be able to do so. We are trying to be thorough by surveying our experiences and adapting ourselves to them intelligently and successfully, which is very possible while Mercury remains trine Jupiter, sextile Venus and square Mars. Buried opportunities can be brought to light through extraordinary overhead vision. 

He has gone to the casino, squandered his cash, indulged in freely given drinks and starts to wonder at the revolting quality of the scenes around him. He staggers outside and sees in the distance a cross carved in stone surrounded by other than the strip's electronic light. He knows there is security somewhere, but not here. Maybe in prayer.

The man in armor, with shield, knows he might be safe for a long time if he stays with normal precautions. While pondering thus he sees above an aureole of clouds. There seems to be a triangle of fire near the setting sun and within it an eye. He feels a divine fire of intuitive ardor. He can do something more inwardly real even within his sometimes boring job of regimentation.

Tentativeness and uncertainty are immense. You can turn them to your advantage! It's as if you "play both ends against the middle" in some way. You see how both of two differing options could be advantageous, so you divide your way of investing in each of them with finesse. Then you find that your destiny is arriving in a big satisfying way. A shadow or mantle is thrown over your right shoulder. This is dramatic. It makes you a responsible leader.

Someone you care about is lonely. He or she does not see the exact method of work to follow and so feels estranged, maybe misanthropic. So he may feel vindictive, the eagle, and then adaptable and peaceable, the dove. He could be playing with life a little, but this would not make him happy unless he could be more adept at balancing his desires with the needs of society.

Those who feel grave responsibilities are persuasive. They are leaders because they sense the depth of suffering that would result from misguided actions by those around them. Others, of a hospitable and generous nature, feel they want to shelter, feed, and comfort anyone and everyone. This could get them in trouble but they think that doesn't matter if they are following the behests of their souls. Those of these two temperaments can work together, as (a) the general in a just war and (b) the doctors, nurses, and KP people who sustain the troops. (That is a symbol: Hopefully we are living it out in a less military setting.)

There is gain to be had through sharp and effective mental activity. (Mercury square Mars and trine Jupiter within two degrees.) This could be very fortunate, leading to more abundance than you had expected. Then you will want to use the resulting largesse, whether financial, social or intellectual, for the good of all as well as yourself, and the "dark shadow or mantle" which falls over your shoulder gives you the power to do what you had only dreamed.

~Happy Christmas!~

A clown is making grimaces, prancing about and making fun of people and himself. He gets away with almost anything. Meanwhile unseen in the distance a woman struggles in the lake to survive, sinking and rising, sinking and rising again. Something tells her friend to run away from the clown to the lake. She throws a lifebuoy to her friend and she is saved. 

The Full Moon of Christmas divides its influences in several directions. This could be vacillation by those beneath it, or finesse in making subtle decisions with intuitive guidance. Some of these require resolute training of the animal in themselves. They watch their eating and drinking assiduously, escaping from the environment's temptations or compulsions, and do what seems their proper duty.

Is it an eagle or a dove? Some think one, some the other. It flies above, circles, and seems to be adeptly what anyone thinks it is. Some say, Prepare for war; others say, Peace is our chance. In a cloister a monk sees the portentous bird but returns to the book lit by his vestal lamp. The silence in his chamber gives him the key to higher mysteries.

A wolf stands on the carcase of a horse. A man passing by feels uneasy, sensing that he has been the wolf and the horse some of his friends who now revile him. The woman rescued from drowning passes by with her rescuer. She feels herself the horse, always in debt, almost bankrupt, but saved from the wolf again by her God-sent friend.

}Freedom within Self-Imposed Tasks{

I failed to post a forecast for today on Tuesday evening as I should have. Holiday celebration caught up with me and I gave myself an excuse because I had already posted the Fortnightly forecast for December 18 through January 1. However, it is clear to me that we need the daily forecasts also. This was driven home this morning (Wednesday) when I felt a curious depression, lack of enthusiasm, "holiday blues" and even worse. Then I looked at the ephemeris and realized that the |difficult third| of the week had begun. I apologize for not alerting you to this before it began as I would have if I had written a forecast Tuesday evening.

It is a real thing, but it help me, every week, to know about it so I can make allowance for it and know it will be temporary. However, that should not prevent us from trying to understand the particular "karmic lesson" that is being pointed out to us during that period. For me it was (a) be very careful in your choices and portions when eating and drinking and (b) keep on giving even if you don't seem to get much if anything in return.

Wednesday, almost half over for some of you as I write this, has four square aspects by less than 5 degrees and only two trines and sextiles by that orb. We are "up against it" in some ways. You might feel specially unhappy in late afternoon or early evening as the moon's opposition with Saturn becomes exact. So we need to keep up our faith and hope and charity to overcome the "wicked forces" or entities or thoughts and worries which can drag us down. "Just going through the motion" of some necessary activities could be enough, and then you will feel better. Then the nice aspects of Venus sextile Jupiter and Mercury trine Jupiter can take over and give us a sense of well-being and satisfaction. 

Honor seems at stake in many minds. What does the world think of me? What have I accomplished? There is always hope of doing a little more, maybe just that extra amount which will make you feel you are fulfilling your life's purposes.  It doesn't have to take every minute of your day but if it takes enough of them the rest will be happier.

As you can see from the above, things get gradually better through this day, which is nice because it is Christmas Eve. Theoretically one could say it is wise to complete as many preparations as you can before the v-of-c time, but things are not always that neat. After that, a little more free-form spontaneity is appropriate. If you forgot or failed to do something you wanted in preparation for Christmas, give it a wink and promise, or say Merry Christmas instead of a present or card. It's a holiday of the heart, not of the pocketbook.

As the popular press likes to report, it is a Full Moon Christmas, although I fail to see exactly what that means except that the Full Moon always grants an expansion of consciousness on more than one level. I am happy that the |difficult third| ends before the kids open their gifts from Santa Claus. 

Irritations we feel with certain people, and disagreements, may remain in the background but seem to be diminishing, so let us tune in to the pleasant aspects among Mercury, Venus and Jupiter--the latter two the "benefic planets" according to the ancient astrologers who were first to know of the birth of the Messiah. 

"After his birth astrologers from the east arrived in Jerusalem, asking, 'Where is the child who is born to be king of the Jews? We observed the rising of his star, and we have come to pay him homage.' . . . The star which they had seen at its rising went ahead of them until it stopped above the place where the child lay. At the sight of the star they were overjoyed. Yes, the most scholarly translation of the Bible, the New English Bible, translates "Wise Men" as "Astrologers." We aspire to understand this sacred science and live by its light as well as the light of the Christ Child.

Guys, I am stressed. I posted a Fortnightly report yesterday for the next two weeks. Since then I am facing all kinds of difficulties. We are in the beginning of a Dark Hermetic Epoch of two months. The dates are December 19 through February 13. On February 14 a new Bright Hermetic Epoch shall begin. Until then we need to be careful, watching ourselves in our outer lives from the viewpoint of our inner selves, our divine or angelic selves, and trying to reconcile the outer with the inner.

It is not a terrible time but it is confusing unless we are fully aligned with our Divine Source.

I will try to post things here as I can. That is not tonight. We need to keep our heads and be peaceful.

Forecast for the Fortnight of December 18 through January 1, 2015-16

There is likely to be loneliness. There is a sense of futility, as if one were "assaulted by ruffians." (The phrases in quotation marks are from the clairvoyantly derived symbols for major degrees in which slow-moving planets lie during this fortnight.) This suggests anger or at least frustration and irritation. The long-lasting Cardinal T-square with Mars, Uranus and Pluto continues although now with Mercury rather than Pluto closer to the point focus. Some of this involves friends, and some career. Then there is the question of how to overcome the problems, and that could be some kind of revolution. Well, we are all pretty wary of political or military revolution, so it's not that, most likely, but an ethical or spiritual revolution or a reform of one's habits. "A high flagstaff with a red flag floating at the top" suggests the campaigns of Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, and other "outsiders" trying to revolutionize something. More practically, in our lives, it is our revolutionization of ourselves. Some of this has to be practical, for we might feel in need financially; the rest on the ethical-spiritual level.

There has to be business within the world's ways. This is not always pleasant but we can find one expedient or another. Some business-persons are cantankerous, and one might feel that way oneself. Successful merchants may be doing well because of the holiday. Some of this gain is international in character (despite the devastating losses in international stock markets in recent weeks). We have a Full Moon at Christmas and may experience it, partly, on a quite materialistic level. Venus sextile Jupiter from Scorpio to Virgo tends in that direction. 

You may feel your honor is at stake. People disagree and some do not understand your approach or might even disbelieve your goals. Yet you are determined to be high-minded, noble and courageous in pursuing what seems right. "A lion standing alone with tail erect, then running toward a panther." You sense possibilities and levels of understanding way beyond the usual purview of humanity. "Rings of light in the heavens; ring within ring or zone within zone.," "This is the man for a far distant future." Yet we can get intimations of that future and live inwardly so as to bring it nearer. It is the Supramental Realization of Sri Aurobindo, indeed "for the distant future" partly because almost no one believes in it, studies his writings, or tries to actualize it. Yet many are indeed doing that at a very unconscious level. They don't know where their inspiration comes from yet try fitfully to manifest it, whatever their beliefs. We see that in technology, movies, TV, popular culture, the Internet. It is progressive but mostly without a clue as to the basis and source of its progress.

There may be vacillation, or a needed tentative response to eventualities. There has to be finesse while things reach a better level of understanding and commitment. We are in a new Dark Hermetic Epoch as of the beginning of this Fortnight (or exactly on December 19). That is not an evil time but a time to take things a little slowly, review old things, and grope toward better understanding and planning. "Many toys in the children's ward of a hospital" suggests that some may be childish, while some will indulge childlike predilections in others whether children or adults. Those infirm, disabled, or ill get our concern and care at the holiday season so they can share in the general abundance rather than suffer alone. 

"A girl blowing a bugle" summons us to re-understand our beliefs or belief-systems. We also need to understand to whom we are giving ourselves, what individuals or organizations or higher-realm spiritual realities or Beings. Everybody justifies himself or herself in a different way. "Two prim spinsters" is rich in symbolic statement. If you imagined yourself as one of the spinsters, who would the other one be? There is a chance of the two of you splitting yourselves off from society at large. Then there is the chance of divorcement between the two of you. You both desire to avoid superficial, time-wasting interests, though in differing ways.

We are all struggling to understand and to live intelligent lives. What are the lamps, the candles, candelabras or Christmas lights which reveal to you the meaning and trend of your living? Perhaps setting up or moving these--a lamp or source of illumination or Christmas light--will also help us orient ourselves to reality more happily. We are wanting to train or discipline ourselves. Coach ourselves, is a better way to put it; to be our own personal trainers. This comes out strongly, for example, in a friend who has given up not only drinking but then also smoking and now caffeine! Admirable, from my viewpoint. I think he is able to do that now partly because of Jupiter being in the sign Virgo (until September). We are "getting a grip on" ourselves and our habits. It seems to me a daily challenge. I hope it goes well for you . . . 

in this special season when something beyond even the planets and their deities descends to aid us, perhaps Christmas Angels, perhaps the Saviour Himself . . .

\Drifting Perspective/

You may note the effects of the new Dark Hermetic Epoch (containing Mercury Retrograde within it at its center and continuing until February 14) which began Saturday December 19. Perhaps a little laziness; perhaps musing on the past; perhaps brooding on things which seem to be going nowhere. Or, at best, a detachment which allows you to keep everything in Merry! perspective. It's supposed to be that time of the year . . .

^Turning Impatience into Steadiness^

Moon in Aries   **

Extreme patience and steadiness is needed in the face of what seems unending toil. Further, there is jealousy or a lovelorn feeling which could come out in anger at the one seemingly rejecting oneself. There could be a desire to make someone jealous or otherwise manipulate her or his feelings. This is a normal human reaction, but not a salutary one. Keeping in mind the position you want to gain in life and working toward it patiently will be the best course.

One feels that one cannot succeed. It seems that one has been cheated out of one's gains. The struggle is hard and made harder by a feeling that it is unfair. Yet one might find a way of dancing with life despite all this, discovering paths of invigoration through being and exhibiting oneself fearlessly.

The moon is getting fatter, and there can be a benediction despite hard feelings. People are creative and one can enjoy their creativity. There is a desire for new and fresh experience, romance. Yet this is mixed with suspicion of the Other's difference from oneself. One can be fanciful and rove a bit, though finding home the better refuge at some point.

Solicitude for the Other's needs is hard to come by yet needed. People need to share simple things. That can help you be patient, seeing the tasks you need to perform as just a matter of  course. The social world requires us to give when we don't feel like it, and then receive more in return than we had expected.

Despite their angry disagreements, people have solicitude for one another. They need to help one another take advantage of opportunities. We are sculpting a better world if we are half-conscious of what we are doing. This requires a faith in the immortality of the human race and in our own immortality. 

Some feel abandoned, as if life had battered them and no one cares any more. Perhaps they have been derelict and foolish. Yet they could regain their bearings if they were idealistic enough to appreciate the beauty and glory still available to them. They need vistas and visions to inspire them.

Receiving a benediction from nature or humanity is possible. Humor is also possible, a release from too many worries. We express ourselves more fully and freely when we feel secure and able to reap a harvest from our endeavors. That should be possible now and in the near future while Venus moves to a sextile with Jupiter. 

Training oneself resolutely is important in setting up a destiny which is more than drift and disintegration. Effort is essential. Kindness and concern are also essential if we are to fit ourselves in with the human race rather than try to go it alone. Who is alone? People are feeling a need to compete and justify themselves. Yet the result of sheer competition is zilch if there is no human kindness and solicitude for the welfare of others. That does not have to conflict, at all, with concentration on one's career or a project. Rather the two support each other.
