 Message for Weekend of June 20th and 21st, 2026 

I used the time I would ordinarily spend writing the symbolic forecast-meditation to compose instead a eulogy for my cousin Barbara, who passed from this world last Friday. I hope you may find in it something interesting or inspiring. 

My cousin, Barbara Jo Kappler Beck, 1943-2026

How does one sum up such an interesting human being? I won't try for that, but will relate various reminiscences as they occur to me. 

She was about a year younger than I, and we had a lot of fun together as kids. Our interests sometimes coincided. We played card games together. I enjoyed riding my bike to her family house for get-togethers or picnics. What stands out in these memories is her cheerful sense of humor. She could make fun of people in a subtle way which was neither cutting nor derisive. Maybe "Barb" was an appropriate nickname for her. 

She loved her cat Phoebe and would regale me with tales of her latest adventures, such as the time she got "treed". 

My mother Margaret and her brother Ike Kappler, Barbara's dad, would trade off as hosts for delightfully memorable family picnics attended also by my sister Sue and Barbara's brother Jim. So much joy and laughter. 

After graduating from high school, Barbara and I entered a new phase of togetherness as workers at the Bella Villa Motel purchased and managed by my father Howard. Both my parents were glad to have Barbara on hand as a ready assistant. In these pre-John days, of course Barb kept her eyes open for possible links to unattached males in the clientele. Something started when she dated one of them briefly, but didn't last long. "Just get over it" was Barb's lugubrious advice to herself.

Her bedroom and mine were on the top floor of the motel's living quarters, adjoining an open rooftop where we often sat together and chatted in the setting sunlight, pondering life's deep mysteries. 

Our paths parted when I moved to New York City. So I was not in touch with her when she and John got together, the biggest blessing of her life. Therefore I'm not writing about her later years of married life in Wisconsin. 

I'll mention one thing: Her magnificent service to her dear and my dear Aunt Edna. She had health problems in her later years and was living in Florida. Barbara visited her frequently to assist her. This was deep family loyalty, one of Barbara's wonderful characteristics. As I write in Seattle I can look up to see the wall hanging that Aunt Edna wanted me to have and that Barbara kindly mailed me years ago. 

Likewise, she was loyal to her amazing brother Jim. For example, she wrote a moving eulogy for him when he, one of my best friends ever, departed this world way too soon.

Barbara, we miss you and we love you. I don't know exactly how the next world works, but I hope you and Jim and Aunt Edna and your parents are getting together for a heavenly picnic. 

I haven't mentioned religion, but it goes without saying that you and John have been walking the talk of your faith. He says that in recent weeks you report that you have been talking with Jesus. Amen!

May our precious Lord continue to bless you and confer all good upon you.

1 Elastic, undeveloped thoughts greet the New Moon like "a wave-line of nebulous light obscured by a cloud." There could be obscurity and Wandering. 

2 Yet there could be hints of "remarkable feats" blazoned by "a balloon," though not ready for any great success.

3 "A man trimming palms" knows how to Enhance things by ridding them of whatever is superfluous. 

4 At last we get to something more substantial, "a large building with walls of granite" denoting something lasting, including a great deed handed down to posterity by one favored with longevity.
