There are questions of superiority of position versus inferiority of position, either in work or friendship. Some may feel that others are looking down on them. “A man rides on a horse near the edge of a cliff, looking down into a valley where people are at work.” The “boss” or “big man or woman” has attained his or her position legitimately but could be in danger of rebellion from beneath, or of an embarrassing slip and fall. All want what is in “a jewelry shop” but there is some competition. Nevertheless, what is treasured is being preserved for those who “shape their vision to larger dimensions and more than trivial ends.”
“A person of good proportions; fine dark eyes with arched eyebrows” is “an all-round person” who “would make a good detective” through exact observation of men and things. He might be “proud and a little selfish.” But someone who is more humble could be like the boy of Hawthorne’s tale The Great Stone Face who, unbeknownst to himself, grows into the beautiful image of the face carved on the mountain of his home town, because he has looked at it and admired it so much.
“A woman holding a bag out of a window” is living out her daily routine in a way which facilitates experience for herself and her community. Somehow we all serve “every purpose and function of living.” When we have done that efficiently we could be ready for “a gigantic tent,” perhaps the circus, “a naïve intensification of consciousness enabling us to see experience both steadily and whole.” Immediate entertainment enhances a re-apportionment of capabilities in a common cause.
