While the moon is waning, amid a bank of clouds
A ship at sea seems all disabled. Unsettled habits
Lead to bad placement with little hope of
Improvement. The captain scrawls with a pen in the log
Anticipating in flourishes what he cannot attain.
Conditions require sail-sets and steerage beyond
Ordinary capacity. Furthermore, a promiscuous lot of
Cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry wander on deck,
Pets or livestock? Nobody seems to know but Dr. Doolittle
Should be called to sort things out. The human passengers
Drift, drinks in hand, to the assembly room with deer-heads
On the walls, ready for whatever entertainment the
Formally dressed host may introduce. He looks good
And strong. The talent he emcees heightens morale.
