~The Long View~
"A professor peering over his glasses" specializes himself to play a particular role. This could be of great magnitude, if he expresses lofty opinions based on wide views.
There is also passion, perhaps of an erotic nature, which needs to be contained, cured or otherwise dealt with. One wants to shepherd others or oneself into something better in life.
One may feel like "a battered hulk lying upon the seashore." This is a temporary defeat leading to recovery. If rudderless one might meet winds of adversity, but it is possible to restore steering somehow or other.
Then one might become "A great tortoise" living long, solitary and retired, enjoying the favor of Providence. Fortune smiles, and one might acquire, or see how to acquire, surprising wealth or boons.
