Trying to understand what people care about. Fun? Other people? Justice? Goodness? Living well? Entertainment? Relaxation? Bliss? Spiritual reality? Immortality?
It seems to me that people are blank, stupid, mindless, consciousness-less, about all that. They have no idea what they are doing or why, but are, as Gurdjieff and Ouspensky declared, machines.
How to get out of that? Sri Aurobindo showed the path. It is neither self-recrimination nor self-condemnation, neither self-applause nor self-exaltation; it is realistic appraisal plus spiritual aspiration. Not easy to do. Believeing that someone Above is helping one is essential, I think. For some that is Jesus (and for me); for others it is The Mother (as Sri Aurobindo prescribed, and as I have experienced). Jesus or The Mother, Jehovah or Rama, it is essential that we latch on to and hold on to the One who can help us. To believe that oneself is superior to G*d is a sad and tragic mistake.
