We'll just plow through the symbols. I believe they have real, meaningful implications each day, more evident if one re-reads them at the end of the day.

"Too revolting to be given," says Charubel, hinting that one should "keep out of bad company; indulge not in stimulants; keep clear of the gambling hells, and seek to develop thy higher nature to save thyself."

"A fox running apace in the moonlight" is subtle, crafty and perhaps predatory, "relying on the fortunes of chance aided by skill, cunning, and secrecy. Some incidents in his affairs cannot bear the light of day. At worst he could be in danger of imprisonment or exile." We are more likely to read or hear about such "foxes" than to be one of them, unless the warning applies. 

"A general accepting defeat gracefully" has to be opportunistic while holding to his "long-range ends in view." Through "a self-disciplined grace of spirit men may be won over by the enemy they have defeated." There is "a genius for transforming setback into accomplishment." The keyword is Expediency.

Then there could, in hours of rest, be room for enjoying one's home or even feeling "house-proud." One could luxuriate in something like "a tastefully furnished room with a large wax candle on a round table in the center." Life provides beauty and comfort.

"Inherent differences among humankind enable man to share any endeavor with his fellows whether they are more or less competent than himself." Someone on a top rung may possess "A roll of parchment, sealed and lying across a scepter." He or she occupies a position of trust and responsibility, perhaps in government service. There could be a need for secrecy and caution. The keyword is Authority.

At a lower level, at least in appearance, is someone conducting "A ferry boat taking people across a wide deep stream." He or she is "a guide or teacher of the public, of much more service to others than to himself." And so, spiritually, he may be higher on the "stairs" than the government official. 

For any or all of these there is "A tankard set upon a table," in a vineyard or hostel where there is "a sincere regard for all that is simple and natural in human nature." "A man of the common walk whose sympathies are with the people is at the same time a teacher and purveyor of spiritual truths." The keyword is Sincerity.

And so, for protection, it is wise to listen to "a hidden choir singing." A "symphony of cosmic reconciliations" is "a power for the good of all," saving the "owl" from daring too much danger. Humanity is felt as one when it unites in worshiping the One from whom it has its source.

On the other hand, there could be "ephemeral popularity" akin to "fireworks exploding in mid-air above a crowd." The recognition and applause "are soon over." 

Or, if "one's goal of living becomes a preservation of values" in "social stewardship" and "self-dedication," one receives "Two awards for bravery in war." An "exaltation of personal vision and character gets Recognition, the keyword.

And yet, surveying both past and present, one may decide to be "A man in armor, fully equipped and bearing a shield." Assurance comes from forewarning and preparation, so that one may display "a brave and dauntless spirit." Faithful and just, one is "defended at all points by the goodwill and faith of friends and associates." The keyword is Security.

With five planets in Saturn-ruled signs, and the symbols of the day, we may well cultivate patience. "A person is ascending a spiral staircase within a dark enclosure, with sunshine at the top." "Officers on dress parade" could be--who is it?--Texas rangers, National Guard, the Feds, the gun-toting Texans, I don't remember their correct designations--on opposite sides of the very real border crisis. "Dignity and protocol always provide a dramatic and valuable rehearsal of cultural or group values." The keyword is Discipline.

"Two men in fierce strife" carry out a similar picture. They are "aggressive and quarrelsome," fomenting "difficulties and dangers from which they may not escape unhurt." 25 other states have joined with Texas to repel the southern invasion, and some speak of civil war. "His mind will be at war with prevailing opinions and popular beliefs." Finally he might be "deserted and abandoned to the mercies of his mother Nature." 

But of course things do not have to go that far. We have minds which are ordering and harmonizing, and helpful tools such as "an astrological chart in square form." Someone fond of astrology is "a just, kind person." Justice and kindness are in fact two of the virtues wise astrological study instills.

"A heart surmounted by an aureole" is symbol of "an affectionate and devoted nature" (which military men usually display toward their own families). One may feel one is in "a coal pit. The machinery is at a standstill and the whole of the plant in a dilapidated condition." In other words, "it's the pits," part of the time, until one is rested or restored mentally and physically. 

There can be strong attachments with a selfish design in them, and when that fails there are bitter feelings of resentment. The keyword, Jealousy, warns against rivalries and feuds resulting in "nothing but oneself to care for and all the world to rail against." 

Fortunately that is not all we are, so we are called to "go up higher" and realize our spiritual nature. "A hidden choir is singing." We can hear "the eternal music of the spheres." "The ideality of experience is at root a symphony of cosmic reconciliations." "All men are at one in the universal pattern." The keyword is Worship.

"A target pierced by a rapier" suggests "powers of penetration." However, one might "fall victim to  one's own want of discretion." Knowing truths should entail following them, or else one gets in trouble or disgrace. One is, or all are, impulsive and headstrong. "Let him beware of the direct thrust and practice the use of the two-edged sword." The keyword is Vulnerability.

"A girl surreptitiously bathing in the nude" represents "the irresistible desire of all life to strip back to essentials, and to gain self-renewal by some immediate and close intimacy with the accepted roots of all-being." "A small cottage with wide-open door" betokens "an hospitable and generous nature, a kindly and warm-hearted disposition." One can be austere in one's methods, yet show sympathy for others and feel compassion for their weaknesses and foibles. It might be good to decide on things before the moon goes void-of-course (time below). Other, minor indecisions could be harmless.

"A woman nude is looking at her reflection in a pool." There may be dalliance and self-love. Egotism veils weakness and a falling into carnal temptation. Yet there are sympathetic tendencies and brilliant reflections of the immediate environment (pool). The Full Moon draws out feelings. There can be artistic tastes and talents. 

All of this may be modified or uplifted by "a serpent coiled around an uplifted beacon" because it indexes "a mind that is unusually wise, subtle and profound." There can also be prudence and circumspection so that diplomacy, law, or governmental administration proceed through extraordinary ability. "He will shine and his light will be seen from afar." 

Could that be some politician? There is "a very high flagstaff, with a red flag floating on the top." This could be "an agitator or person of great organizing abilities." Several individuals come to mind. He or she may be "a revolutionist" or at least represent the hopes of multitudes as they reach toward peace, freedom and prosperity.

Mercury conjoined with Mars can be sassy, and we have that today, while the moon accents them by being opposite them; so we have: "A lonely traveler in a solitary way, with a heavy burden on his back, is assaulted by ruffians." Charubel says this is "a struggle for existence; everything seems to be against him." But this is just for a day and so the essence of it is to be patient with tribulations. 

What could help? "A Hindu healer." On Monday, as I write, in India a mandir (temple) to Ram (in Ayodhya) was dedicated. It was years in building and partially an accomplishment of Narendra Modi, the prime minister. This is a big thing for Hindus and the people of India. It is the outer symbol of "an inner and transcendental reality." "A spiritual self-discipline achieves a magical ordering of the whole course of events, and in its perfecting it provides a spectacular ministry for the minds and bodies of all." The keyword is Therapy. 

"A boy and girl stand with arms intertwined." This represents finesse and adaptability. There could be some duplicity, or better, diplomacy. There is alternation between male and female, or hot and cold, or other opposites, and in the social world this could be ambassadorship. There is distinction through versatility. 

"A fire worshiper" is "continually outreaching to the divine in a spiritualizing of his aspirations and a dedication of his talents and possessions to the over-all reality. "Walking with bent head, leaning upon a staff" is how you may feel while recovering from "shocks of misfortune, the severing of ties, or the disappointment of hopes." "Steadfast resignation to the will of Heaven" brings "consolation for griefs and sorrows." "With a patient and firm will, one must eventually attain his goal."

"A man inspecting horses" has good judgment and so anyone today can choose among offers, deals, purchases or investments with reliable results. 

"A spade protruding from the soil" has been the instrument of work which "reveals some of the dark secrets of Nature." Success will crown difficult, protracted labor. Ignoring the advice of friends while relying wholly on one's own efforts leads to Discovery (the keyword).

Yet someone, a spiritual leader visible or invisible who plays a role in a social or political hierarchy, wins respect from you and others. This could be "The Pope" or any other striking figure who "sacrifices self in some enduring service to the race at large." And you yourself "are strengthened within yourself by the appreciation you succeed in winning from your fellows." The keyword is Sanctity.

People tend to assume that astrologers are pagans. This one is Christian. When I was thirty I was in the blackest, most dismal period of my life. While I was browsing in a bookstore, finding nothing, a total stranger looked at me and said, "Read the Gospels." I replied, "Okay, I will." I didn't say, "Oh, I've read them many times," which was true, because this felt like a message from above. I did as I was told, and for the first time felt the love of Jesus and the gift of redemption in a way which left no doubts.

Since then I read one of the 89 chapters of the four Gospels every day. Today, from Matthew 10: "Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown before my Father in heaven."

However, like my astrological mentor, Marc Edmund Jones, who was a Christian pastor (Presbyterian), I do not "preach" the Gospel in my strictly astrological writing. I have learned from non-Christian and even anti-Christian astrologers, such as Elbert Benjamine (C. C. Zain) and consider the essence of astrological wisdom to transcend doctrinal belief systems, as does the essence of any other scientific study.

It has fallen out that on Fridays I try to take a broader view of current planetary transits. The Hermetic Epochs, based on Mercury's cycles, lasting about two months, seem the best way of dividing up time for human beings on this planet. A Dark or Slow (more internal) Epoch lasted from November 25 through January 20 (Saturday), and a Bright or Fast (more external or straightforward) Epoch begins Sunday the 21st, until March 19. 

It is hard to evaluate how "good" or "easy" or "smooth" each Epoch will be, but of course the Bright ones seem easier for carrying out definite plans. 

Let's do a little comparison of the Epoch just ending with the new one, using the Dynamic Aptness aspect in each of the two charts (the closest square or opposition). It's not pretty. In the old Epoch it was Uranus opposite Venus and the symbol for Venus (I am using Charubel's which are usually the most accurate of the three systems in these kinds of charts) was: "A man holding a fowl by the neck, strangling it." It wasn't that bad, you say? No, but there are nine other symbols in the chart. If you have been reading the news at all you know of the plight of the Israeli captives in Gaza, for example, and what goes on in Ukraine, and on and on. The symbol for Uranus, "A flag on the top of a mountain," confirms that this could be an international dispute. The "strangler" is, says Charubel, "cruel and a coward, taking advantage of the weak and defenseless." This is going on in the case of the J6 prisoners, many of them held in miserable conditions without even being accused of a crime.

In the new Epoch beginning Sunday, the Dynamic Aptness aspect is Jupiter square Mars, the latter planet in the degree "A sexton digging a grave. A secretive, unsympathetic person who takes pleasure in others' misery." Not again, you say. I concur. But Charubel's symbols are not predominantly ugly ones and so I take them seriously. Well, many supporters of other candidates are "digging Biden's grave" by constantly making fun of his fumbling and implying that he is unfit for office. I do not agree with them and I wince at their cruelty. I do not support him because I disagree with some of his policies. 

Well, the sermon from this is that we ought to observe ourselves and make sure we do not "take pleasure in others' misery" even to a small degree. But of course, taking pleasure in misery is what the online trolls love to do. The symbol for the other plant in that aspect, Jupiter, is "A fork with four prongs resembling a farmyard implement. A laborious person, unambitious, a useful member of society, ever content with his present lot." That would be the way to go. It is what it is.

Venus's degree: "A beacon light on a high rock. One with great intuition. Pay attention to those impressions the world calls foolish, but which show the Divinity speaking through humanity." 

The degree of Rahu, the north node of the moon, often shows underlying karmic issues working out. In the old Epoch now ending it was: "A comet with a very long tail, pointing towards the earth. A notorious character who may become an instrument in the hands of evil powers, so as to bring evil on this earth. Such persons may become the scourge of nations." Zelensky, Putin, the Houthis, Hamas, anybody else? In the new Epoch beginning Sunday: "A man with a sheaf of corn under one arm and a sickle under the other. A hardworking person who may devote his energies to agriculture and will prosper by his labor." Farmers in Germany, France and elsewhere in Europe are rising up and saying, "You are taking us for granted; be fair to us."

Neptune is at: "* * * This is an occult degree. One is sure to be possessed with strange influences. He or she will have a familiar or spirit companion, liable to obsession; its nature determined by his or her own character." 

The moon: "A cross formed of darts, that is, with a barbed termination to each arm. A very positive person of strong will who will never allow anyone to impose on him. He is on the defensive; one with magical abilities." Individuals upholding what is right and fair, let us hope, in this dismal era of "lawfare."

No less than three planets--the sun, Mercury, and Saturn--are in this degree: "A fixed star; a transcendental sun. It sheds a halo of supernal glory on the ascendant." "Psychic power. Much that is not capable of explanation in the light of astrology. He will possess most brilliant gifts but will not be appreciated by the present-day world, simply because it will not understand him. His life will be long on the earth, and his influence will extend to future generations."

There is someone I believe in whom this could represent. What about you?

Are you annoyed by "trolls" on X or other social media? Who treat those they disagree with politically or religiously with utter contempt? "A crow, or raven, standing on a water-pot" has "a designing and crafty nature, planning mischief even in regard to harmless things." This can be somewhat charming in children, maybe. Otherwise, "he will find himself reflected in his own designs, and eventually injure himself thereby." The keyword, Envy, awakens us to how often we may be subtly guilty of that "cardinal sin." 

Someone else may wear "A mask representing the face of a hound." He "will be dexterous, apt in the imitation of mannerisms, a capable actor." Yet he is kind and sympathetic, readily attracting friends. Beyond the mask, few know him for what he really is.

What individuals do you suspect to be involved in "A secret business conference"? Wealthy people are funding presidential and other political candidates. Is this "rampant selfishness and rank exploitation of others"? Or is it a benign "inner circle of associates through which one may exercise a real control over immediate eventualities"? There are "effective allegiances" through which some may "monopolize the resources of their fellows." The ravens or trolls of the first paragraph tell us that these are omnipresent and insidious. The more charitable may believe that they are genuinely philanthropic. The keyword is Opportunity.

What is your personal place in all this? Charubel says that you may not realize some actual advantages you could secure. There is "a spacious park with a baronial mansion in the background" representing some privileges your ancestors may have enjoyed; and they could be yours as well if you would "look into this matter." The keyword Opportunity for the previous symbol is here brought down to the personal level.

You don't want to hear it, nor do I, but we are still in a Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch until Sunday the 21st. In other words, we are suffering the same confusing, chaotic circumstances most associate with Mercury-retrograde periods. Example: Last night after a spiritual meeting I went to a supermarket and filled my basket. Just as I got to the checkout counter there was a loud blasting sound and the lights went out. They came back on, partially, but nothing could be checked out but what could be paid for with cash. I had to leave most of my groceries behind and take only what I could pay for with the thirty dollars I had in cash. And I had been quite happy with the choices I had made but had to leave behind. Aargh. Then out on the street walking home I warned people walking toward the store. 

Another example: Yesterday a website I use daily was not working properly. I phoned the group that keeps it in service and left a message. Then after losing an hour or so I tried again and found that they had changed the appearance of the site but if I clicked on the new "button" I could in fact use it. Good. Then today I got a call from them but they weren't in my database so the phone didn't ring. When I saw the call in the log I phoned back and left a message thanking them and explaining I had seen the answer to the website issue. More unneeded phoning and messaging for both of us. The only gain was that I entered their phone number in my contacts for future use if ever needed. Mercury retrograde? Sure felt like it but it was the extended Dark Hermetic Epoch (November 25 through January 20). 

And there are "little things." I find myself walking from the living room to the kitchen, and back, more often because I have forgotten something. Things fall on the floor more often. You have your own examples, I am sure.

The sun's symbol for today, Wednesday: "An indescribable scene; chaos, confusion, dissolving views." Pluto has been often at that degree in recent months, for example on October 7 when the Hamas slaughter of young Israelis at a music festival began the horrible Hamas-Israel war now continuing. Charubel says that it gives "weak intellect or idiocy." Or, if you ask me, a release of demonic craziness.

And so we are forewarned of that as a tendency today; it could even lead to "a broken tree struck by a lightning flash" or "abortive projects, vain ambitions and unfortunate relationships." Hopes could be cut off through catastrophe; the keyword is Abscission. It is not likely to be that dire for very many of us but we may be aware of the suffering of others. Karma, hidden and sneaky, determines so very much in our lives.

While on the topic of the current Dark Epoch: I congratulate Vivek Ramaswamy for his amazing attempt at a presidential nomination, campaigning in the Iowa caucus. Was he mistaken in doing this, and would it have been better, with Cosmic Piper's advice, to stay out of the race? No, because it was something he deeply needed to do, and it could have good results later on. In another example, Bill Ackman the multi-billionaire is attempting to run a candidate (nobody remembers his name) in the Democratic primaries.
