We search for reassurance like a ground hog looking
For its shadow. The drift of potentials awakens
Creative interest; unhesitating trial and error.
When we grow visionary we could be feverish

Like a house on fire, impulsive and headstrong,
Subject to severe penalties or sheer exhaustion.
But an old man, wiser, sits beneath a shady tree,
His head bowed in thought, a pilgrim. The mysterious
/
And abstruse seem more real than the changefulness
Of human relations. His disillusion is actually a true
Perspective on values. He ponders a dark archway
With ten logs at its bottom, ten purpose-serving
/
Potentials made tangible. There is nothing to fear
In their mystery. He extends himself through them.
