A retort, pestle, mortar, bent tube, crucible

Lie upon a table.  Chemicals cook and combine. 

The experimenter sometimes longs for his long-lost

Sailing trip on a wide open seascape.

 

There he met sometimes the water sprites, restless

Occupants of mutable forms avoiding the drab

And commonplace.  He didn't envy the aviator

In the clouds he sometimes waved to, whose observations

Reached too far for comfort. On randy days he dreamed

Of gambling hells and brothels, lost buddies qustionable

Yet somehow true. To dare, to try for what the gods

Deplore, seemed low kin to transcendental suns 

Glimpsed at night upon the deck, the stars the sprites

Adore when resting, haloes of supernal glory.
