Overshadows a man lying on the ground after
A heavy meal and lots to drink. A monk passing
By has eaten little, austerely dependable in study.
A grave-digger is at work while a shovel stands nearby
Unused. The passing of lives could stop at the next,
For all we know, but the girl weeping near the plot,
Melancholy and retiring, feels utterly abandoned.
A boy lights a flame at another tomb, letting its light
Reflect hope into his face. He believes in magic and
Demonstrates its power. He has seen others fall on that
Path through pride and resultant jealousy. Not he!
The sins unconscious we harbor sap our strength
Unless we stabilize our deeper destiny.
