Messages for Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October 2023
Saturday 28: \Restoring Civilization/
A monster with two faces, he trumpets the evils of
His enemy while covering his own, justifying war
Through duplicitous deception, easy slander. The whip
In his hand might have been that of a cattle-dealer,
/
A husbandman rather than a killer. His rugged nature,
Fitted for rusticity, should never have been adapted
To the conflicts of the town. He could have kept honey-
Bees, encircling a tree in a field of rich grass,
/
Attaining success through diligence, acquiring money
And friends. Maybe even yet he could escape to
A world of glamor and be a guest at
An embassy ball celebrating the end
/
Of war. Civilization frames itself in display;
Political organization, ending conflict, fosters glory.

Sunday 29: \Back to Youth/
An inventor experiments. He is clever. He dawdles
And dreams. Does he make a unique contribution?
Does he make a niche for himself? Or are his
Inventions used for fighting? Two men fence with
\
Swords while a man in black stands aside watching.
A fracas between foreigners does not dignify either
But instigates a melancholy fate. Somewhere else, in
An adjoining field, grows a bright orange flower
\
On which two butterflies rest and fan their wings.
Some find delight in associating with those similar,
And the heavens smile on mutual affection.
Into the field comes a naked boy, a crown on his head
/
And a scepter in his hand, dignified
And innocent, to reconstruct a secret future.
