If they're sane, a raven stands upon a stone. 

He's avaricious and morose, secretive and revengeful,

A misanthrope. He delights in people losing their way.

A woman sits by a dark pool of water in the 

Shadow of dense foliage. The raven leads a man

To her side who says he'll rescue her from gloomy

/

Fatalism. Weary of ambitionless melancholy, she's

Glad to know she's seductive and influential on the

Other sex. He blindfolds her and takes her hand,

Entangling her in a skein of complications. 

/

Caw! She tosses her head, removes the wrapping

And returns to her pool, contemplating home truths.

An anchor lies unattached to any vessel's chain,

Its hook fastened to a rock, the cable broken.

Some have little or no control over terrible trials

But an archer is nonchalant, indeterminate,

Restless, shooting his arrows toward a flight 

Of birds without design or in vain strife. Love 

Affairs too are lost arrows. Could one learn

From a philosopher with three mounds of knowledge

On his head, thereby becoming prescient?

Cosmic order's unrecognized except maybe in a

Broad tract of open fields under the moon's rays

/

Where all is calm, joyous, tranquil. An invisible anchor

Needs not a cable to guide through a winding river.
