"A prison door framed with iron girders" could remind us of the suffering of those imprisoned, justly or unjustly, around the world.  "Judge not that ye be not judged" has not become the common knowledge of humanity.  As for those imprisoned for political beliefs or religious reasons, that should never happen.  If feeling imprisoned yourself, or in voluntary seclusion, Charubel suggests that we ought to shun vacuous interests and pursue "mathematics," or in other words structured abstract knowledge whether in math, logic, cabala, coding, cryptography, or astrology.  This might have surprising benefits.

"A canoe approaching safety through dangerous waters" suggests competency in the midst of adventure.  A little risk may be better than the too-narrow comfort zone of no risk at all.  We develop powers through steering with our skill.  Life is promising when we react to it through both inward and outward sensibilities.

The long-lasting square between Mars and Saturn may have happier applications now that Saturn is direct and therefore Mars (retrograde) is moving away from the aspect.  "A man of powerful form riding upon a restive horse" has strong character, "maintaining his dignity and position by means of natural powers."  This can be in close interaction, partnership, and career.  Venus trine Mars, though it has been overshadowed by harder aspects, remains in effect, so we have "two golden circles tied by a blue ribbon in a double bow"  This can be good fortune in marriage or any relationship; union, lovability, peace and concord.

"A gladiator ready for the fray" sounds very much like the emphasis of the three most edgy or difficult planets--Mars, Saturn, and Uranus--because they are at "critical degrees" according to an ancient formula which has proved itself in my experience.  That has been going on for weeks and shall continue.  If it's not the pandemic, it's forest fires or tornadoes, "one damn thing after another."  Urine test? Non-starter.  Then what about checking for hidden earphones?  Some "gladiators" seem to have gone berserk.  (As I write the debate has not yet happened.)  Yet perhaps each of is is indeed "fighting" some battle of her or his own.  As for "this person shall make a great discovery," which Charubel tells us, what discovery could you make?  Or what discovery of someone else could you learn from and profit by?

"A man waving a red flag to signal a promiscuous crowd rushing in a gallop toward a perpendicular rock" means warning, through great powers of discernment and forethought.  It is analysis and criticism which can save people from bad choices.  Life-coaches and therapists are supposed to have such abilities.  There are endless ramifications of things one could perceive, experience, or do.  How does one choose safely among them?  Not only safety but interest and enthusiasm are choice-criteria.  

Venus has moved away from a painful quincunx with Saturn and is in a sextile with Mercury and a close trine with Mars.  "Three old masters hanging in an art gallery" show us how to appreciate not only beauty per se but whatever that beauty cultivates, aligning us to one another through esthetic experience and accord.  The Venus-Mars contact may be becoming real to some or most of us as "two hands linked in a close grip of friendship."  There is sociability and amiability.  If we rise above problems of previous paragraphs, we and others around us can sustain one another in a constructive, harmonizing and humane manner.

Venus quincunx (difficult aspect) Saturn fits with "a young maiden weeping over a grave," that is, melancholy and a feeling that family and friends are gone.  That could extend to a sense of "Where is my nation; why is it in such trouble?" I shall not predict the outcome of the presidential debate, but Venus is exactly on Donald Trump's Mars, perhaps helping him, yet the degree-symbol is "A dagger."  Sepharial says that this "is an ominous sign!  A quarrelsome, argumentative nature, given over to impulsive actions.  A restless and destructive mind, always on the alert to attack, to oppose, to argue.  Very executive, but by no means constructive in disposition, and hence liable to go through life like a tornado, remarked but not esteemed."  Many would say that a truer characterization of Donald Trump could hardly be given, and this is the degree of Mars in his birth-chart (and Sepharial wrote this decades before Trump was born).  However, astrology is complex, and the Sabian symbol for the same degree is "Daybreak."  "Reality is ever a beginning in the immediacy it offers the individual" (Dr. Jones).  Make America Great Again! shout Trump's supporters, upholding the keyword of the degree in the Sabian system, Genesis.  And so which Trump shall the voters perceive tonight?  

"A blazing fireplace in a deserted home" may be what we are feeling, not knowing where the family or nation is, or for whom we are keeping the fire going, or how to guard the home from accident.  Yet we are guardians of what we hold most dear, our "burning desire" or passion.  

"The Union Jack" shows a need for supervision, for some kind of government, and who, Biden or Trump, shall provide that best?  

Within all the feeling-turmoil we fumble after "the true lover's knot," feeling that "the finest feelings of the soul" are "unreciprocated."  The knot is not yet tied; or if it is, the "lover" attached does not know she or he is attached!  Yet Mars and Venus are in a favorable trine within two degrees, and love is here if we accept it.

Challenges:  Hard work develops enduring self-government.  A project shared with others enhances character.  This could cure a tendency toward soft, passionate distractions which would reverse good fortune through instability.  Venus's aspects point to danger through erotic allurements.  However, it is possible to discern amazing things, to make discoveries.

Opportunities:  A prominent person, recognizing your merits, could assist you.  Something like "an ancient looking wayside inn" could be felicitous.  Conservative individuals, antiquarians, or relic-hunters might be fortunate.  Indulging in pleasures and luxuries is natural and favored up to a point.

Blessings:  "A large camel crossing the desert" has learned to rely on resources within.  The course to be followed is just followed, with utter adequacy.  The desert does not have to offer what it cannot.  "A man possessed of more gifts than he can hold" feels endowed and independent.  He or she is equipped to attempt all things.  Living out idealism can result in "the ideals of a man abundantly crystallized."  Some position or some individual personifies all that he or she has hoped for.  This could be wonderful because Venus trine Mars uncovers the beauty and gentility of anyone who attracts.

Challenges:  "An untidy, unkempt man" may have a philosophy like Dioogenes', who lived in a tub on the streets of Athens and hardly ever washed himself.  He was imperturbable because of his imperturbable thinking.  "A man feeling his way over a bog" is trying to keep going despite uncongenial difficulties.  If he falls he can recover.  Mars and Saturn both retrograde, in their own signs, and at critical degrees show that many of us are facing severe challenges to our persistence or even our sanity.  "Imperturbability" may be the right remedy.

Opportunities:  Losing one's temper, or impulsively trying to use force rather than persuasion, is a possible problem while Mercury is opposite Mars.  Rather, that energy could be used to "fell a tree" or endure long, rude work when needed to produce current necessities.  High aspirations plus simplicity make for a kindly heart even in trying times. 

Blessings:  "A mountain farmhouse with white gate" might be a good image to contemplate.  Memories help us during the "recovery phase" of a Dark Hermetic Epoch (until November 19).  Childhood days may come back potently, wafting the strong confidence of youth.  Venus and Mars in a trine (until October 5) are a positive, sometimes thrilling, always harmonizing background for both erotic attraction and Platonic affection.  When relaxed and trustful we are fit to hear the words of "a man teaching the true inner knowledge."  Human character transmits deeper insight by osmosis.

The |difficult third| (2.5-day) periods each week do not always coincide with rain or precipitation but often do, statistically, and so it is for us in Washington while I write on Thursday--a real downpour, the first of the rainy season--and so it may be in many climes today.  

Challenges:  "A man with a broken plough" suggests lack of assurance about how one is going to manage things.  Yet the field of promise is still there to be worked.  One's pride is hurt when one feels one has fallen in some embarrassing manner.  Yet "a bareback rider" is audacious in getting back up and meeting every situation courageously.  Maybe you do without something you had depended on before. 

Opportunities:  "Edged tools" such as an engraver uses suggest ingenious dexterity whether in a craft or an art.  Mercury opposite Mars while both square Saturn can be shrewd self-training and improvement of skills.  Taking away what is not wanted makes what remains more precious.  "A large undershot water-wheel" is able to keep on with study, idealization, and effort through all cycles of time, tirelessly.

Blessings:  Nothing is truly lost when one can re-envision or reformulate its promise.  "A group around a campfire" recall shared experiences without inhibition, and the resulting amiability builds up morale.  Some feel inspired to follow others who have potent diplomatic power and intelligence.  "Take me there."  There can be peace and harmony while "a pale blue star shines over a clear lake."

Challenges:  A cardinal T square involving Mercury, Mars and Saturn spells crisis for many.  "A broken tree struck by a lightning flash" shows how some may feel if they are unable to pay rent or mortgage, or find that the fierce strife of disagreement stymies good intentions.  "Where can I go now?" might be a question, but staying home is most often the answer.  Flailing around to find escape makes people look like "chickens intoxicated."  When fallen, further falling is not the answer but could make one feel like "a man in chains."   

Opportunities:   Holding on to one's soul for dear life is part of the answer.  "In the center of a high mountain plateau one of the ancient magi performs his matutinal [morning] devotions."  The sun, our Sol, "ascends on the luminous horizon" no matter the emotional weather.  To counter the pain of argument, one can choose one's battles wisely, or abstain from them.  If emulating the "ancient magus," one might accomplish some magic through "knowledge of a law in nature not popularly recognized" whose "operations are marvelous."  This is like holding a rope connected to a pole suspending itself horizontally in mid-air.  It is levitation above problems. 

Blessings:  One can reformulate critical aspects of one's life, in imagination first.  What could be anger or violence (Mars-Mercury-Saturn T square) can become instead "a powerful commanding nature" akin to "a human face surmounted by a coiled serpent."  One says, "Enough of this. No more."  "A raised hand appears."  To the forces which would oppress one, "Thus far and no farther!"  You have knowledge of human nature, plus foresight and diplomacy, and penetrating powers of concentration which can command others directly or indirectly. Then there is "the dawn of a new day, everything changed."

Yes, the DHE is here.  Tuesday it was foreshadowed for me by the fact that my internet service was down.  Then I discovered that the provider was doing network reconstruction.  Then it came back on.  Then it went down again.  Now it's on.  A perfect representation of what happens frequently during any DHE:  Slowness, delay, backtracking.  It is good to be ready for that.  Have some Plan B at hand always, something else to do or pursue when you can't do what you had originally planned.  

Wednesday:

Challenges:  Fights, yes:  Mercury opposite Mars and both square Saturn and Pluto!  It's amazing we can talk to one another without wearing boxing gloves as well as masks.  Considering yourself alone, you may feel like Sisyphus, rolling that stone up the incline only to have it roll back down.  You may need to find for sure what is your own task and stay with it.  Your birth-chart might help.  Venus's hard aspects (in a Yod) might make you feel "humane but melancholic and disposed to religious mania."  Being alone is not bad if you are searching out and finding high truths.  They may seem to slip and slide, on the surface, during this DHE.

Opportunities:  A dearth of smooth aspects makes it likely you need to create or discover your own harmony, through fidelity to what you truly believe, as if you were "a Zuni sun worshiper."  There are illimitable resources in valid glowing traditions.  "A violinist playing" shows refinement and aesthetic accomplishment.  That is making Venus a conqueror through artistry.  Location is significant, as if you wanted to go places at least in your mind, or find your "true home"---probably where you are, for now.

Blessings:  You could be "a crescent moon joined to a shining star," gaining glory from someone you admire.  That association could bring you eminence and distinction.  We are reformulating our elves, or selves, and our approaches from now into November. (Your Self trains your elf-self.)  "The light of the sixth race transmuted to the seventh" is a historic, esoteric suggestion that human destiny and global society are on the threshold of something momentous.  We may not see the details of that but there is honesty, conviviality, and friendly persuasion in mutually interesting directions.

Challenges:  The desire to make things easy is natural, but can go awry, as if one were "a man running in the face of a strong wind but making little headway; his garments fly in tatters behind him."  Pluto square Mercury can be an attempt to force one's will on others, but they may be the "strong wind."  Luck one has had in the past may fail and then there is a fall.  The Fall is the Autumn, which begins today; the sun is "in its fall" in Libra, which is a beautiful sign for those who are appropriately humble.  It is not a happy sign for those who are like "a man with a drawn sword in an aggressive attitude."  

Opportunities:  "Trimming palms" could be cutting back inordinate hopes, thereby making them more realizable.  It is good to be scrupulously honest and rigidly just.  I can't help mentioning that Venus and Mars have begun a trine with each other, by less than nine degrees, and this bodes well for romantic love over the next twelve days through October 4.  There can be "a houseboat party" or "gracious participation in some pleasant pocket of life."  It is at least the possibility of over-all congeniality. 

Blessings:  Mars has retreated to the degree "lost opportunity regained in the imagination" and this is appropriate because tomorrow begins a Dark or Slow or Retrospective Hermetic Epoch until November 19.  It does not mean there is no forward momentum, but this comes from a conscious, and sometimes meandering, reformulation of what one has tried in the past.  One's character can become whole-souled so that one articulates purposes.  "A star surrounded with many rings" gives assurance of protection no matter what trial one might encounter.

Challenges:  If wanting to do anything which feels like a gamble, risky, today and tomorrow might be good days for it because a Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch (of two months) begins on Wednesday.   Yet contradicting that advice is the symbol "a man standing either headless or with the head shrouded in black cloth."  This is a degree of "obscuration."  It shows reclusiveness or eccentricity.  Rather, one could either be or learn from "a teacher of chemistry" because organized instruction is helpful.  

Opportunities:  Further, "a false call unheard in attention to immediate service" suggests that one needs to safeguard oneself against indiscretion and maintain one's established place.  Well, there goes the gamble unless it is well-hedged.  One can be poised to rise above "the plane of one's birth" because one is sober and plodding.  Others' troubles may be shared in a way which helps both.

Blessings:  Venus at point focus in a Yod configuration suggests a desire for friendship and wide interconnections.  Pluto square Mercury is a capacity to profit by obsessive investigation.  "A bright mirror reflecting the sun's rays" is a powerful intellect reflecting others' ideas but also apt at original inventions or schemes.  There is sympathy and generosity, and persuasiveness through jovial frankness.  The truth is sought and insisted upon.

. . . and so things look gradually less disturbing than they were Saturday

We are out of the |difficult third| of this week, technically, though of course that is only one indication of things which can be troublesome.  But it is an important one!  I discovered it more than 20 years ago and have been posting it here for 21 years.  I am always surprised that it is not universal, common knowledge at this point.  It has physical as well as psychological manifestations. 

It could be proved by meteorologists (the weather people) if they would study it statistically.  But they won't.  They dread astrology.  It shows, very frequently, more precipitation than usual, whether rain or snow.  Example:  We in Seattle have had a dry summer, as we often do.  The rainy season has not begun.  And for the last couple of weeks that has been bad because of fires in eastern Washington and because of fires in Oregon and California; their smoke has been afflicting us intensely.  I have been hoping for rain to help with both the fires and the smoke.  Now look at these reports for the past few days.  You will see that the |karmically serious or sobering third| of this week began Friday and continues through Saturday until Sunday morning.  What happened?  Friday afternoon there were showers!  Then more, and then quite a lot more rain.  We needed it very badly.  

I call these periods |karmically serious| because they are; but the indication of rain is something else, which is correlative.  Obviously rain is not, usually, bad karma but very good karma when it is needed for crops.  It happens to come at these moon-Saturn times along with what is an intensity of seriousness in human beings.  If you ask why, I can only report what I know, not what I don't know.  But this pattern is solid and observable.  It also correlates, frequently, with illnesses, whether colds, flu, or more serious problems.  Often it will show the crisis points of an illness.  

More basically it shows moods.  On the constructive side is not only rain (often, of course not always) but an ability to focus with concentration on problems and find solutions.  This is something which can be done intensively during these periods.  The astrologer Grant Lewi pointed this out in his analysis of what hard moon-Saturn aspects mean in natal horoscopes. 

Here are some more observations I have posted here in recent days, somewhat edited:

Desperadoes:  That is Us! it seems.  Today I am breathing smoke, need to go out for food wearing a mask which might protect against a virus as well as the smoke, but only to a tiny degree, am reading about political controversy and bickering, and two people have informed me that they cannot find these reports on Facebook.  Although I have been faithfully posting them every day.  

Desperadoes:  The people in some Gulf Coast states are worried about high winds and flooding.  Those in Western states are breathing too much smoke and worried about a possible resurgence of fires.  Many are weary of face masks and the pandemic to the point of despair or repugnance and rebellion.  Huge numbers are worried about the election in November and not feeling peace of mind until it is over.  We are the desperadoes.

2020:  This is 20 in the Tarot, Judgment, and 20 in the Tarot, The Last Judgment.  (The card has both names.)  It sure feels like the angel is getting ready to blow that trumpet.  "Blow, Gabriel, Blow!" Desperadoes may be glad to hear you.

And I am an astrologer.  How to explain all this?  Well, start with Saturn.  I knew of a very successful astrologer who said that she always began her work with a client by looking at Saturn in the client's birth-chart.  It is the Big Baddie in conventional astrological thinking, though it has been rehabilitated by astrologers such as Liz Greene who wrote a book about its "nicer" meanings.  At any rate, it is the challenging planet, few would dispute.  Well, since December 2019, three planets have been in the sign of Capricorn, Saturn's sign---Jupiter, Saturn (which is very strong there because enthroned), and Pluto.  That continues until December 17-19, 2020, when both Saturn and Jupiter leave Capricorn for Aquarius.  It's quite amazing that they both do that within two days of each other.  Is that the beginning of a "new age" or something better?  Well, hold on, because Aquarius is also ruled by Saturn, according to the ancients, though also by Uranus according to us moderns.  

However, this is not the whole story.  Perhaps even more dire has been the square between Mars and Saturn.  These are the two "malefic" planets according to the ancients, that is, trouble makers or, rather, indicators of the most difficult challenges for us as human beings.  The square and opposition are the hardest aspects.  So it is not hard to see that a square between these two is "bad news" for "the easy life," though it could be "good news" for those who revel in suffering or enjoy difficulties so they can triumph over them. Interestingly, Tom Ellis, the star of Lucifer, has an exact square between these two in his birth-chart!  He claims he is not evil, yet revels in his role as "the punisher."  

The square between these two is happening (a) while Mars is in his own sign, Aries, strengthening him, and (b) Saturn is in its own sign, strengthening it, and (c) Mars has been slowing down, stationary, and turning direct, which it does very gradually, and it is very strong, or strengthened, when it is very slow.  He turned retrograde September 9 while within three degrees of that square, and shall turn direct on November 13.  After that he again forms  the square with Saturn from December 18 until February 15.   This is a very rare long-term aspect and we might say that it is a major reason for all the suffering and dis-ease or desperation people are experiencing.  Will it be less difficult during the December 18-February 15 period because then Mars will be in Taurus rather than Aries?  Let us hope so.  

But before that, we have a Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch beginning this coming Wednesday the 23rd.  It happens to begin the day of the Autumnal Equinox.  The three presidential debates will occur during that Slow or Dark period, and the election itself (Mercury is stationary turning direct the day of the election).  

Here is the Hermetic Epoch timing:

Bright Hermetic Epoch began July 26 . . . Dark H E begins September 23 . . . (Mercury retrograde October 13 through November 2, the core of the DHE) . . . DHE ends November 18 . . . New Bright Hermetic Epoch begins November 19 (until January 15, 2021)

Is Gabriel blowing that horn?  Will it be a very long and repeated blast while the election is challenged and ballots are counted and recounted?  I know my current limits as an astrologer and shall not try to predict the details but they may be as confusing as many already think they may turn out to be. And will the pandemic ease up in late November to March, if not sooner?  I would think so but shall not make a prediction.  We all want it to be sooner, and I believe in the power of prayer and positive thinking.  (For believers, that is the power of G*d and of one's cultivated relationship to Him.)  

All that is to try to answer the question many would ask of an astrologer, "When will things get better?"  I am sorry that I cannot be more specific than that, but it might provide a framework within which to think about what is happening.

Some happy things about the Dark or Slow or Imponderable Hermetic Epoch beginning Wednesday the 23rd:  

Ability to probe into the past.  Happy memories.  Enlightening visions of the past.  Possibly memories of past lives.  An ability to be in touch with the souls or higher selves of those who have passed on.  Psychic phenomena of all sorts.  A sense that one is in more than one dimension at the same time.  

Thinking of and getting in touch with old friends or relatives.  Reliving things to experience them more deeply with higher awareness of what they mean.  Spiritual stamina, and spiritual openings into higher worlds or awarenesses.  Sorting out old books or papers and getting order in things which are "old business" before it gets out of hand.  Hashing out fascinating possible agendas or big plans with people, but remaining aloof from implementing them until the next BHE when things will be clearer.  

Realizing that time includes past, present, and future.  Sensing the meaning of eternity.  Rectifying old errors, perhaps apologizing for them.  Well, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, happens soon (Sunday and Monday September 27-28), and those not of the Hebrew faith can celebrate it as well by looking into themselves to sense how they can be their better selves.  Under the review of the Supreme One, of course.

Challenges:  We have four hours of "triple witching" as shown above, when morale could sink and one wonders "What am I doing here?"  As always, positive prayer would help.  "A giant amusing himself with a child's doll" could be you drifting into something childish, whimsical or worthless, when you could do better (you are implicitly a giant).  "A bald-headed man" has experienced much and is prepared to be dominant, to control others rigidly.  This could be advantageous if not sadistic.  

Opportunities:  "A ram standing on a barren rock and pawing the ground" is headstrong, impulsive, "a formidable opponent and a warm-hearted friend."  He or she is impulsive and gets by on very little.  "A man in his shirt sleeves turning a big wheel" is "assisting in a work that is producing a mighty influence on the world."  This is often laborious, yet may receive appropriate remuneration.   Natural resources may sustain you, like "a dairy farm."  Good reading is fortifying.

Blessings:  "Sunshine just after a storm" would be welcome, a glimmer of hope.  Some are favored by life naturally even when times are tough.  "A wide-branching tree laden with fruit" is still there no matter the weather.  It may indicate something about yourself intelligent and industrious, bringing either a large family or many friends.  If some of them are difficult, that's part of the game of persisting hope.

Desperadoes:  Grinch alert:  I am not in a good mood and may spew out some of the general negativity at the beginning, but shall try to work up to something more positive before the end of this report.  

Desperadoes:  That is Us! it seems.  Today (Thursday as I write) I am breathing smoke, need to go out for food wearing a mask which might protect against a virus as well as the smoke, but only to a tiny degree, am reading about political controversy and bickering, and two people have informed me that they cannot find these reports on Facebook.  Although I have been faithfully posting them every day.  

Desperadoes:  The people in some Gulf Coast states are worried about high winds and flooding.  Those in Western states are breathing too much smoke and worried about a possible resurgence of fires.  Many are weary of face masks and the pandemic to the point of despair or repugnance and rebellion.  Huge numbers are worried about the election in November and not feeling peace of mind until it is over.  We are the desperadoes.

2020:  This is 20 in the Tarot, Judgment, and 20 in the Tarot, The Last Judgment.  (The card has both names.)  It sure feels like the angel is getting ready to blow that trumpet.  "Blow, Gabriel, Blow!" Desperadoes may be glad to hear you.

And I am an astrologer.  How to explain all this?  Well, start with Saturn.  I knew of a very successful astrologer who said that she always began her work with a client by looking at Saturn in the client's birth-chart.  It is the Big Baddie in conventional astrological thinking, though it has been rehabilitated by astrologers such as Liz Greene who wrote a book about its "nicer" meanings.  At any rate, it is the challenging planet, few would dispute.  Well, since December 2019, three planets have been in the sign of Capricorn, Saturn's sign---Jupiter, Saturn (which is very strong there because enthroned), and Pluto.  That continues until December 17-19, 2020, when both Saturn and Jupiter leave Capricorn for Aquarius.  It's quite amazing that they both do that within two days of each other.  Is that the beginning of a "new age" or something better?  Well, hold on, because Aquarius is also ruled by Saturn, according to the ancients, though also by Uranus according to us moderns.  

However, this is not the whole story.  Perhaps even more dire has been the square between Mars and Saturn.  These are the two "malefic" planets according to the ancients, that is, trouble makers or, rather, indicators of the most difficult challenges for us as human beings.  The square and opposition are the hardest aspects.  So it is not hard to see that a square between these two is "bad news" for "the easy life," though it could be "good news" for those who revel in suffering or enjoy difficulties so they can triumph over them. Interestingly, Tom Ellis, the star of Lucifer, has an exact square between these two in his birth-chart!  He claims he is not evil, yet revels in his role as "the punisher."  

The square between these two is happening (a) while Mars is in his own sign, Aries, strengthening him, and (b) Saturn is in its own sign, strengthening it, and (c) Mars has been slowing down, stationary, and turning direct, which it does very gradually, and it is very strong, or strengthened, when it is very slow.  He turned retrograde September 9 while within three degrees of that square, and shall turn direct on November 13.  After that he again forms  the square with Saturn from December 18 until February 15.   This is a very rare long-term aspect and we might say that it is a major reason for all the suffering and dis-ease or desperation people are experiencing.  Will it be less difficult during the December 18-February 15 period because then Mars will be in Taurus rather than Aries?  Let us hope so.  

But before that, we have a Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch beginning this coming Wednesday the 23rd.  It happens to begin the day of the Autumnal Equinox.  The three presidential debates will occur during that Slow or Dark period, and the election itself (Mercury is stationary turning direct the day of the election).  

Is Gabriel blowing that horn?  Will it be a very long and repeated blast while the election is challenged and ballots are counted and recounted?  I know my current limits as an astrologer and shall not try to predict the details but they may be as confusing as many already think they may turn out to be. And will the pandemic ease up in late November to March, if not sooner?  I would think so but shall not make a prediction.  We all want it to be sooner, and I believe in the power of prayer and positive thinking.  (For believers, that is the power of G*d and of one's cultivated relationship to Him.)  

All that is to try to answer the question many would ask of an astrologer, "When will things get better?"  I am sorry that I cannot be more specific than that, but it might provide a framework within which to think about what is happening.

Friday:  

Challenges:  There can be bluntness, backwardness, awkwardness, while Mercury and the moon square Jupiter.  One needs to think twice before saying anything.  An ordinary person, with conventional tastes, popular, may disappoint you because seeming superficial. 

Opportunities:  One can recover aplomb through public display, or connecting with those privileged, for continuing support.  Despite disappointments (shown by the lunar data at the top) there can be "a pageant" of dramatized achievement and co-operative accomplishment.  Life is beautiful in many ways we lose sight of when worrying needlessly.

Blessings:  "A figure like the angel of the Sun (Michael)" may be hiding behind the scenes and ready to touch our affairs with "the point of a dazzling sword" to bring out the best.  This is superiority which brings fame, recognition and power.  Charubel also gives what is among his most favorable degree-interpretations:  "I see nothing but sunshine--all is bright; a cloudless sky."  (We in the Western U. S. do hope for that.) "This prosperous person is happy, living under the most favorable conditions."  So may it be.

A Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch (of two months) begins Wednesday the 23rd and we may be feeling the effects already.  More errors to correct.  Unexpected delays.  And so on.  On the good side, a deeper philosophic attitude toward everything, with mystical insight.  

Challenges:  Some inspirations or speculations could be misleading.  Says Charubel:  "Do not believe every spirit but try the spirits."  (There is often more speculation and chatter about UFOs and psychic phenomena during a DHE and that may be starting.)  Further, there could be cantankerousness, quibbling, or quarreling.  "Is everyone a liar?"  Maybe ancient books have answers hidden within them.  

Opportunities:  One can be firm and steadfast to do, or try to do, the right thing.  Being constant, and adhering to principles, is a good basis.  "A boy with a censer" is making a conscious appeal to God both for himself and the congregation. Worthy outreaching begets rapture. 

Blessings:   "An old sea captain rocking" loves to relive his experiences in memory.  The powers he has gained are called up afresh through retrospection.  There can be sympathy and cordiality, with friends of both sexes.  "Two women walking together with linked arms talk confidentially."  Each supports and prospers the other.

\Waiting for the Golden Ball/

Fatuity? : I realize that with the combination of the "masked pandemic," forest fires and smoke, a hurricane, and political bickering, no matter how "nice" some of the aspects and symbols may be, many will read my rosy commentary and feel disgusted because it seems so unreal.  For example, Tuesday's forecast ended with "children on a swing in a huge oak tree" and the keyword Delight.  As I write on Tuesday, I am breathing smoke, looking out at a dark sky, and feeling anything but delighted or delightful.  However, this may change later in the day, at least at certain moments.  And so I continue with the symbolic systems which have proved themselves over the years and hope they may brighten your day. 

Wednesday:

Challenges:  Maybe "a large disappointed audience," the degree in which Mars has been languishing as he turns backward, is trumping every other symbol because it sure feels like most of us are in that audience.  "A flag at half-mast" does not imply that a famous person will die, but suggests respect for those who have gone before.  Soldiers, artists, musicians, performers, writers, teachers, and mechanics are all public servants.  We enjoy many advantages which we may take for granted (sun trine Saturn and Pluto, and Jupiter sextile Neptune).  Pretending to be grateful can call forth actual feelings of gratitude, and that helps.  

Opportunities:  Work at home is good, and study is good.  If there seem to be enemies or opponents, there can be successful aggression, energy, and executive ability to overcome them.  More calmly, "A sailing ship on a calm sea" shows prosperity and honor (says Charubel).  Taking calculated chances could be advantageous. 

Blessings:  Sometimes "easy does it" during the final days of an Old Moon (the New is tomorrow) while things resettle.  "An evening lawn party" would be wonderful for those not plagued by fires, smoke or high winds.  At any rate, there could be companionship. Everyday gratifications are shared with intimates and neighbors.  The final symbol is a favorite:  "A golden ball suspended from the ceiling of a circular hall."  Charubel interprets it:  "This is very mystical; there is something about this person that he never makes known.  It is that which lends a charm to his life; it endows her with a power to fascinate those who may be favored with her or his company."  Cinderella or Cinderfella.

Challenges:  Some may feel like "a man sitting on a rock by the sea, covering his eyes with his hands."  To keep out the smoke?  This is an emblem of loneliness, but this individual might be responsible for his loneliness because he has been misanthropic or unsociable, and perhaps has failed people through an ethical lapse or short-sightedness.  "A large disappointed audience" realize they can't expect much from him.  The hopes of his youth have faded away.

Opportunities:  However, life goes on.  "Mary and her white lamb" suggest that this individual who feels abandoned still has a friend or two who artlessly support him in a childlike way if he learns to trust them.  "Wherever Mary went the lamb was sure to go" and so a dog-like or lamb-like devotion could have good results.  When not trusted, find someone to trust, at least in imagination.  This is a gamble but there's nothing to lose.  It might even lead to this picture:  "A man and woman seated at a table whereon viands and wine are lavishly abundant."

Blessings:  True, there are painful aspects such as Venus square Uranus (harsh separation such as in the first paragraph) and Mars square Saturn (indifference to others), but they can be overcome when one realizes that one is favored in many ways and has a generous heart which can attract people.  "An audience in a large assembly room and a man at the piano" suggests artistry, eloquence, and popularity, a cure for the "disappointed audience" of the first paragraph.  Someone else can do that if you don't yourself.  "Children on a swing in a huge oak tree" are delighting themselves with every available phase of living.

Challenges:  Even if one feels one is in peril, giving shelter and comfort to those who seem worthless is a virtue one can demonstrate.  Varying "tribes" or nationalities seem in conflict or disjunction, so that when one looks for "human unity" one is disappointed.  One might feel one has to be "an animal trainer," resolute in teaching oneself and others to live up to potentials--patiently and adroitly. However, any sadistic impulses (Venus square Uranus) could lead to separation.

Opportunities:  What does "a farmyard with cows, or a dealer in dairy products" mean to you?  Charubel hints that it might be meaningful.  "A shovel suspended in mid-air" could be projects abandoned or postponed unwisely.  Or, they might actually be profitless, as "digging in the air and sowing to the wind."  Or perhaps one is in a world of one's own, valid even if premature.  "He is not understood by the men of his age.  He is a man (or woman) for the far distant future."  Someone like that could be your teacher or guide.

Blessings:  "Early morning dew" indicates the rejuvenation possible while the Part of Fortune is in the house of friendship and hopefulness.  Expecting and asking could precede getting.  Luxury plus richness of heart gain favor.  One might happily rove or explore as if one were "a ship in full sail."

Sometimes I have posted a weekly or long-term report on the weekends instead of a report for each day.  At other times I have posted a regular reading for Saturday and a different sort of message for Sunday.  I may return to that format.  I need one day off per week, and have chosen Saturday, so Fridays become burdensome when I have to write two forecasts on one day.  

This time, let's look at what was going on on September 11, 2001.  I did not use these symbols at that time, or rarely, and so the report I wrote (I have not looked it up) was probably not particularly prescient.  But since then constant research has shown me the value of the daily degree-symbols, and the ones for that historic day are amazing.  

I use nine to twelve symbols for each day, though I do not mention all of them.  Here is what I might have written for 9/11/2001 if I were using my current method.  [I'll put comments by my "present self" in brackets.]

~Overcoming Terror or Trial~

Challenges:  It seems a fateful day, with a need to estimate one's place in the universe or one's career or mission.  At the worst we have "a dagger lying beside a skull" (Signor Borelli).  Interpreting it, Sepharial says it can show cruelty or oppression.  "The nature is melancholy and taciturn; yet silently discerning, and capable of keen feelings.  'It makes not but it mars; and with the hollow eyes of death looks back with secret self-condemnation upon its unfruitful work.' [Perhaps a Shakespeare quotation.]  The end of life is tragic.  It is a degree of Undoing."  [I'm quoting more from the commentaries on the symbols than I usually do because so much is astoundingly accurate.  Remember that this was written in the 1890s.]  As further warning, we have "Two men fencing with swords.  A man in black stands aside watching them."  This shows disputes and quarrels.  One might be "involved in some fracas in a foreign country or with a foreigner."  "He will be liable to hurts from secret enemies.  It is a degree of Fighting."  [I find this astonishing.  Could it have been much more accurate?  Even the "man in black standing aside watching the duel" could have been Osama bin Laden.]  "Three stained-glass windows, one damaged by bombardment" carries out the ominous trend.  Dr. Jones speaks of "the necessity that man protect his handiwork from the superficial destructiveness of a life without vision or pride."  [The keyword, Commemoration, might not have been evident on the day itself but we have had countless, and annual, commemorations of the destruction of the WTC and the thousands of lives which went with it.]

Opportunities:  "A lion whose head is the only part exposed" suggests defense, and "being prepared for any attack.."  "Instead of shunning an opponent, he prefers to wait, or rather to provoke the onslaught." [This would seem to indicate the terrorists.]  "He may not be the first in the arena but he will be the last to quit it." [That seems to indicate the ensuing U. S. A. response.]  It would be wise to avoid "vacillation or uncertainty falling away into negation and ineptitude." (Sepharial).  "Procrastination will be a besetting fault." [Everyone has marveled at the failure of U. S. forces to detect anything about the attack ahead of time.]  "With more than usual effort he will achieve less than the ordinary.  His end is obscure and darkly veiled."  And so we need to be alert.  When we have done what we can, there will be "a houseboat party" or "co-operative relationship, common adventure and congeniality."  [As a matter of fact, in the evening people in the U. S. were not celebrating, of course, but getting together to discuss the grim events and sometimes it may have seemed like a party.  I was working in a retail store in Colorado and the people who came in were mostly happy and preparing for a social evening.]

Blessings:  We respect or venerate what has been substantial in our lives, "a lofty building, with nave and massive pillars on each hand."  We appreciate "the sublime in architecture."  [Amazingly this describes the World Trade Center with a fair degree of accuracy.]  "An automobile caravan" shows forth the variety and diversity of humanity.  "Self goes out very courageously to meet its world."  [This is reminiscent of the hordes of people who walked from downtown New York to escape the horror and the dust.  Also it might suggest "driving away from" the tragedy in our minds, to determine the next step, as a "caravan" of collective humanity.]  "A star surrounded with many rings" encourages us to hope in the best, for it is "beyond the vision of the outer sense."  One "need never be cast down."  "Thou wilt meet with trials, but fear not, 'Thy bread shall be given thee, thy water is sure.'"  (Charubel) [Something to encourage us, which we sorely needed that day.]

If you are not breathing smoke, be grateful.  Mars in Aries a fire sign moving backward to form an exact square with Saturn, actually exact now within 3 degrees, indicates precisely "danger from fire" and the Western states are experiencing that.  In other places it may be intense heat, or other issues.  Evacuation from one's home is not pleasant but many face it.  The |difficult third| can be a turning point.  

Challenges:  "A Bolshevik propagandist" is probably not what we need when lives are in danger, but he doesn't cease calling for revolution.  He thinks he is "leavening" the racial consciousness.  Others may be like hedgehogs, secretive and defensive.  Others seem to oppose anything and everything.  Political arguments? Aplenty.  Health issues may need and get attention.  

Opportunities:  Ordinary work, even on a Saturday, is strengthening as well as utilitarian.  "Glass blowers" bridge the realm between sheer utility and artistry, combining both deftly.  What you do is effective participation in human living.  It is also likely to be remunerative.  "A man with a money bag in each hand" may be putting too much weight on sheer acquisitiveness, yet do well in that regard. 

Blessings:  "A girls' basketball team" allows its players to express themselves in multiple ways through the "division of labor" represented by the differing positions.  This is happening in our lives whether we think about it or not.  There are also more sublime blessings, inherent in the sun's opposition with Neptune plus his trine with Jupiter and Pluto.  "An aureole of clouds.  In their midst appears a triangle of flame, and an eye within the triangle."  Spiritual faculties are awake and alive.  Perhaps mystical intuition, sincere and ardent, will trump banal logic.

~Securing the Greater Good~

Challenges:  We have the weekends hit by the |difficult third| period (moon-Saturn hard aspects) until mid-to-late October, when it will move earlier toward Thursday-Friday.  Today we have the continuing possibility of harsh disagreements symbolized by "several young men in dispute in a market place, asserting their respective opinions by the use of cudgels."  Sounds all too familiar.  What they need to do is look up at "the constellations in the sky" in order to get calmer perspective and the surety which arrives through cosmic insight. Then the contrary opinions of other blokes will not seem threatening or annoying.  

Opportunities:   Being on the defensive could mean one is prepared, and therefore not fearful, sensing that one has superior strength.  "A sceptre with a diamond shining like a magnificent star" shows courage, endurance, and superiority.  One knows how to take care of what is essential.  And so one avoids deceptive traps or side paths.

Blessings:  "An automobile caravan" brings the variety of life into your purview.  Sol trine Jupiter is good for casual friendship.  "A pyramidal figure with a Maltese cross on the apex" is glorious and sublime; it "rules the wonderful" according to Charubel and because Venus is there we may experience "the greater good" insofar as we are open to it.  Today is a strong King of Clubs day according to a system I trust.  Likewise it was on 9/11/01, but planetary aspects were much worse then, and the "King" seemed to have been a terrorist.  (I may write about the symbols which were current on that fateful day in Sunday's report.)
