The differential between three and four stars is a subtle one. I want to be extra encouraging when it seems that fresh initiatives or bold pursuits might be fruitful. As for five stars, I keep holding them in reserve! Maybe some day . . .
The quatrains which follow are somewhat cynical . . . Perhaps we need to overcome that cynicism to make the most of the day, while winking at human hypocrisy realistically.
The demonstrators know their cause is just. How many
Workers must die before the public, lawmakers, courts
Wake up to what is fair? Widows and widowers
Carry signs. Police and counter-demonstrators menace.
Sitting in on the business conference, he scrawls his notes,
Wondering if secrets he is hearing could ever make him profit.
Maybe not. They never had. Entrepreneurs were always
Covert monopolists. They got there first and held their place.
The beautiful woman displays herself alluringly,
Eyes shifting toward any who could bring her wealth
And fame. Their desire for her, however, is fenced
With thorns, as she well knows--and audaciously ignores.
