A woman friend draws two dark curtains aside,
Revealing tenuous values beyond the outer facade,
Daring him to gamble on crossing the threshold
Of his limitations. Then jealousy enters
/
As poisoned love, then mastery over his passions,
But not his own mastery! Where is the power he
Had gained through ritual and study? Now he
Turns to music, takes up the bow of the violin
/
So that his playing fosters fine perceptions,
Awakens refined tastes and opens intuition.
