1 Labor Day is supposed to honor those who work. The sun in the sign Virgo, a work-related sign (it’s the natural 6th house ruling work and service), is now square Mars. This can be vigor and enterprise. “Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.” - Proverbs 20: 11
2 Negatively, the sun square Mars can be “rashness, impulsiveness, irritability, quarrels, and danger of injury” (Reinhold Ebertin). This was Joe Biden giving his hideously fascistic and divisive speech Thursday night while the moon was in his sign, Scorpio, wherein it is “fallen.” The moon rules the public as a whole, and Biden, rather than unifying us (moon in the opposite sign, Taurus where it is “exalted”) was dividing us in intemperate ways through inaccurate accusations and propaganda. “It is an honor for a man to cease from strife; but every fool will be meddling.” - Proverbs 20:3 Of course, Biden would say that this proverb applies to his MAGA foes while they would say it applies to him and his regime.
3 Apart from astrology, there are spiritual mysteries surrounding the question of work versus rest. Sri Aurobindo has “worked” hard in his writings to elucidate them, as here: “Pure and untouched above this mortal play / Is spread the spirit’s hushed immobile air. / There no beginning is and there no end; / There is the stable force of all that moves; / There the aeonic laborer is at rest.” In such language he is trying to make plain to us the spiritual mystery of “effortless effort.” One could take these lines into deep meditation.
4 While Mercury opposes Jupiter we can take not only that paradox, or apparent contradiction, into our deep thought but many others. Joe Biden failed to do that last night in his speech, widening a deeper division between disagreeing factions rather than trying to find what could link them together. When Mercury is in hard aspect with Jupiter, accusation is a failure while only considerate consideration of opposite opinions can be a success. This is what Hegel famously tried to do, through huge volumes of difficult prose, stemming partly from the square of Mercury and Jupiter in his birth-chart. In him that led to a dialectical philosophy which sets out to reconcile all contradictions by facing them honestly and thoroughly. This was possible in his case especially because Mercury was in Virgo the sign of its exaltation and Jupiter in Sagittarius the sign of its dominion. At present we would do well to emulate him.
5 Ultimately, beyond narrow semi-logical (rather than deeply-logical) thinking, we sense how particular things or problems (Mercury) fit together within an overarching universal consciousness (Jupiter). “Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?” - Proverbs 20:24 That is, only the Lord (Jupiter, Jove, Jehovah), with unlimited universal consciousness, can understand what we have to experience down here (Mercury) in this world of particulars and relativities.
6 I could say more, but much of it has already been said in the reports for the previous three days, in numbered sections. If so inspired you might review them.
7 I wrote this while the moon was void-of-course in Scorpio. I do not believe that means it is fallacious, rather that I had to struggle to find meanings beyond the usual in order to get beyond the “void” into some level of consciousness transcending it. What do you think?
