1 We should give thanks if our lives are going fairly well, because during this Dark Hermetic Epoch (until October 17) many are suffering disruption. Consider the Floridian victims of Hurricane Ian, and even more, consider the hundreds of thousands of young Russian males who are being conscripted by Putin for purposes which don’t make much sense to them, and the plights of their families. Many are like “a man with a broken plow standing in an open field.” This might be specially true during the v-of-c time pointed out above.

2 Or one might hide in “a dark cavern in a rock covered by a dark and somber curtain.” One treasures there one’s hidden knowledge or reclusive mystical euphoria.

3 “A labor demonstration” suggests the hundreds of thousands of young Russians trying to leave their country to avoid conscription. There are often strikes during any DHE. You might be considering your work, its value to the world, and your fair compensation for it.

4 “A man with a red flag” is signaling “danger” to a horde rushing toward a cliff. Take your pick of politicians or political commentators to represent sanity protecting us from self-destruction. Some think the threat of war, even nuclear, is worse than it has been for years.

5 Meanwhile some may be “covered with gorgeous decorations and ornaments, in the midst of a garden abounding with fruit trees, flowers and fountains, enjoying themselves amazingly with self-admiration.” A party or get-together could be fulfilling, with all feeling buoyed up by others’ appreciation of them, or at least their own.

6 This can be appreciation of obvious good qualities, or of hidden, subtle ones. “There is something about this person that he never makes known; it is what lends a charm to his or her life, fascinating those who may be favored with his or her company.” The social fulfillment of 5 and 6 are possible even while the moon is void-of-course in the evening, lending a free-form, unexpected ambience.

1 Let’s hope this last indication (above) shows that Floridians will be recovering today from Hurricane Ian. We have “a dark curtain covering the mouth of a dark cavern in a rock.” I hope this is not what some of them think of when they see what has happened to their homes or neighborhoods. It’s a suggestion of the reclusiveness we feel during Mercury Retrograde.

2 Likewise we might feel like “a man in the garb of a doctor of the monastic order” who is melancholic and religious, has high intellectual gifts and investigates recondite laws or sciences.

3 Work? Maybe, but why? I heard today that 17% of young men are unemployed and not in school. Are they engaging in “a labor demonstration”? Who or what is representing these individuals to the body politic? They “dramatize their justification” in non-conventional ways.

4 I doubt that many of them have lucked out through the crypto market, which has tanked, yet some may be “covered with gorgeous decorations and ornaments, in the midst of a garden abounding with fruit trees, flowers and fountains, enjoying themselves amazingly with self-admiration.” Could that be you or I? We might hope.

5 We might “pass through this world unnoticed, with the finest feelings of the soul unreciprocated.” We have tied “the true lover’s knot,” being affectionate and confiding to some who return few such feelings. We can congratulate ourselves, for that knot is not easy to tie.

6 Still, we may fascinate some, even strangers, if we go somewhere like “a circular hall with a golden ball suspended from the ceiling.” “There is something about this person that he never makes known; it is what lends a charm to his or her life, fascinating those who may be favored with his company.” Did you know you have such a mystical charisma?

1 Correction: Yesterday I reported that another new $12,000,000 was going to Ukraine without any handles on how it is to be used. I was thinking “billion” but typed “million.” That should have been 12,000,000,000. Those zeroes add up stupendously.

2 The hurricane: I am reading reports about it but they are amazingly sketchy. Journalists and reporters are not at their peak of performance during a DHE or Mercury retrograde period. As I write on Wednesday while the storm is wreaking havoc, the moon is approaching its square with Saturn while also in the Via Combusta. This is a peak period for bad weather or other dangerous happenings, as I have pointed out repeatedly and repeatedly over the years since I began these reports in 1999. It continues (without the Via Combusta but with the |difficult third|) through Thursday and so I would predict that an “all clear,” or “mostly clear,” signal may come by Friday, though I may be over-optimistic.

3 Thinking can be fuzzy at a time like this. Let us pray for the people of Florida that they keep their heads and come through this crisis safely and with minimal damage. Of course, it is also good to pray for other distressed people around the world, especially at a critical time like this.

4 Because of the “fuzzy thinking” problem — which can also be “unusually inspired and surprising thinking” — let’s do a sonnet again and hope the gods of the iambic pentameter will provide insight.

1 “A man either headless or with the head shrouded in back cloth” sounds like me when I listen to various news podcasts. Is Powell of the Fed “shrouded in black cloth” when he makes his moves such as raising interest rates to supposedly reduce inflation but promote recession? Some think so. Is Putin “headless” when he risks the ire of the Russian people by conscripting their young men at a crucial time of the year? Are Ukrainians “shrouded in black cloth” when required to vote in what seems to be a fake plebiscite approving a Russian takeover? Is Congress “headless” when it refuses even to ask what an additional $12,000,000 for “Ukraine” is really going to be used for? Officially, President Biden can use it any way he wishes, for any weapons or purposes, with no oversight by anyone else. Is Biden’s head free of the “black shroud”? Is the whole world “headless” at the risk of nuclear war which Putin continually holds before us? Who is working to prevent that? “Oh, just vote for more money for somebody to spend somehow.”

2 “Shellfish groping” might be the only life left on this planet after a nuclear war; but the symbol includes also “children playing” so apparently we can escape disaster if we find our heads. Actually “shellfish groping and children playing” is a pretty beach symbol and I hope some of us can enjoy such a scene. Life and consciousness emerge through their “absoluteness of attention to their own business of being” like the semi-conscious shellfish and children.

3 Divisions of labor in the world make for supply for everyone, as in “a cafeteria.” There have been strikes (one among railroad workers is looming) and some foodstuffs are in short supply in various places around the world. It’s a day when some may voluntarily restrain their appetites for the sake of health. A cafeteria dramatizes the power of rejection as well as selection.

4 “A man climbs a steep hill allured by light at the summit, but it proves to be only a meteor.” Speculative pseudo-inspirations can be misleading. Discrimination separates tares from wheat.

5 The exact trine of Mars with Saturn, now being joined by the sun to make a Grand Trine, gives power of consistent, patient, indefatigable (even if seemingly at a snail’s pace) achievement. “The ideals of a man are abundantly crystallized.” Someone you admire is inspiring you toward your gradual personification of similar ideals and meanings.

6 What do people really want? Jupiter looks huge in the night sky, in a degree symbolized by “Two lovers strolling through a secluded walk.” The world loves lovers enveloped in innocent enjoyment.

1 Mercury retrograde! I can hardly do my work because of multiple Internet slowdowns, tabs refusing to load, etc. I just typed a whole sentence here with no letters appearing onscreen. Now they finally appeared. The moon is also in the Via Combusta, Burning Way, and 300,000 people in Florida have been ordered to evacuate their homes because of Hurricane Ian. Not fire but wind and rain constitute the “burning way” this time, in this case.

2 You name the problem. Things seem fragmenting. One has to struggle to make sense of what is going on, in the stock market, in the NASA Artemis I space project, and so on. This latter has been postponed THREE TIMES since August 29, and the Dark Hermetic Epoch began on August 20. As I have been harping for years, the DHE is mostly just as hard as Mercury Retrograde for slowdowns and delays. The space programs are not immune to the dithering of Mercury, as I have noted over the decades.

3 Among the symbols of the day, “a man is climbing a hill in the dark, allured by a light near the summit, but finds it is nothing but a meteor.” “One must avoid all things of a purely speculative character. Do not believe every spirit, but try the spirits.”

4 Further, one should be careful of one’s own impulses, for though “a red triangle” denotes intelligence and lofty aspirations, one can get ahead of oneself, losing one’s temper and trying to exert force rather than persuasion. (More literally, the “red triangle” could be fire or a sharp instrument or weapon.)

5 “A cardinal of the church” may also appear red but is reclusive and imaginative, “subject to spells of sensuousness, but of strong self-commanding faculty.” Whether he manifests true spirituality or the “meteor” variety depends on his or her evolved character, but he is likely to be creative. That could be yourself.

6 He or you could be studying “a large archaic volume” in which is abundant wisdom and self-corrective guidance. It provides orienting background. “Any path once traversed may be taken again with greater ease and a broadened self-discovery.”

7 Jupiter is big in the sky, positioned opposite the sun and closer to the earth than in years. Its symbol today is “A wood in which much wild undergrowth abounds, and many plants of different kinds and colors.” If you do not have the chance to be out in Nature, this could be the ruggedness, rusticity and fulness of colorful, prodigal experiences. We are leaning on nature even when indoors.

8 We can calm down, despite the fragmentation. We might be working at “a table on which a right angle and plane are lying.” We take pleasure in the “good works” at which we are proficient, “full of peace in the service of others, graced by the fruits of well-doing.” We don’t have to feel frazzled even during the void-of-course period which takes up much of the day.

1 A “broken hammer or mallet on a carpenter’s bench” could mean awkwardness or backwardness, or failure to exercise executive power. Let’s hope it will not be technological problems which sometimes seem to multiply while Mercury is retrograde.

2 “A right angle and plane lying on a table” show that the “carpenter” is back at work, finding pleasure in it. He or she lives a life of “justice, rectitude and strength” serving others fraternally and getting an honest deserved reward.

3 “A broken plow in an open field” suggests an apparent lack of opportunity, or temporary inability to use conveniences. But even menial work is good for the soul when performed patiently. You might notice someone else aiming at his or her ends with inadequate means and feel helpless to aid except in well-wishing.

4 When all else fails, the spiritual world is always waiting for us to enter it via “a large archaic volume,” either the Bible or some other scripture or impressive and uplifting tome. “The past always provides an illumination of the present.” One can choose a background which enables one to recover advantages.

5 Whether or not you can enjoy the beauties of the autumnal weather, there is “a wood in which wild undergrowth abounds, and plants of different kinds and colors.” One could be rugged like nature, with natural wisdom, uncultivated yet rich of heart and prodigal.

6 A grand trine among Luna, Mars and Saturn gives much flexibility and patience, so despite the possible detriments pointed out in 1 and 3, it appears the “carpenter” can get a lot accomplished while appreciating natural and spiritual grandeur. “I see nothing but sunshine; all is bright—a cloudless sky.” We might be “truly happy, living under most favorable conditions.”

Weekend of September 24-25, and Current Fortnight

Yesterday we considered the blockbuster aspect Saturn square Uranus which came on the scene in January 2020 and leaves in January 2023. Now let’s look at other aspects in the current Fortnightly chart, September 22 (Thursday) through October 4 (Tuesday).

1 Mercury opposite Jupiter is not good for business or transactions, especially while Mercury is retrograde (as it is until October 2) and so of course we have the almost-crash decline in the stock market, down 12.67% since the beginning of the Dark Hermetic Epoch on August 20. I do not attempt to predict whether it will recover soon. It is true that some of the biggest crash-level declines have occurred during DHEs or Mercury Retrograde periods (1929, 1987, 2008, and more). But there can be recoveries during those periods also, just not as often it appears.

2 The sun also opposite Jupiter makes things spicy, because this aspect is known for gambling or speculating, also for “having fun” in an “irresponsible” way which impairs work habits. It’s an "inclination to the high life” including possibly overeating. It can be arrogance in expressing opinions.

3 Mercury and the sun are opposite Neptune. This can make for escapism of various kinds (alcohol or drugs in some cases) including fantasies and entertainment involving the supernatural such as supposed superpowers, etc. There can be self-delusion, confusion, and deceptive communication either on your part of that of someone else.

4 The moon’s position in these Fortnightly charts is where it is at the very center of the Fortnight, when it is conjoined to one of the moon’s nodes, this time the South Node in Scorpio. That makes it opposite Uranus and square Saturn, a T square of tension regarding personal relationships and money, with a penny-pinching attitude as required by inflation, mortgages, rentals, energy costs, and so on. It can be self-isolation, lack of adaptability and separation.

5 The star aspect of the Fortnight is Mars exactly trine Saturn. This can be perseverance to the point of indefatigability. Grant Lewi says, “You are a builder, willing to start at the bottom of a career and work your way deliberately to the top. There’s nothing flimsy about the structure you build. You have an excellent balance of boldness and reticence, aggressiveness and tact. Your judgment is excellent, and you always know where you are going and how each brick, however small, is going to fit into the eventual product. There is insurance that your energies will find constructive and progressive outlet.”

6 This is colored, of necessity, by the fact that Mercury remains retrograde, so the “constructive and progressive” use of energies could seem slow, delayed, or bogged in much thought and revision. That is all right because we are developing things partly “in the dark” during any Dark Hermetic Epoch, yet securing sufficient light to see the next footsteps at least.

The sun entered Libra (autumnal equinox) Thursday at 6:05p PT | 9:05p ET | 1:05a(F)UT.

Yesterday we discussed some of the symbols in the Fortnight chart which covers September 22 through October 4. Now let’s look at the closest aspect in that chart, the very long-lasting square between Saturn and Uranus. It is a monster, one of the worst aspects from the standpoint of comfort although it has a lot to teach us, and it began January 11, 2020 just before the beginning of the pandemic and lasts until January 24, 2023, a three-year run. It’s time to look at it in depth and ty to figure out what we are learning from it.

Here are concise words affixed to this aspect by Reinhold Ebertin: “inflexibility, provoking behavior, contradiction, dispute, animosity, estrangement, separation.” Sound familiar? We’ve had all that in spades, much of it connected with the pandemic (vax or no-vax, mask or no-mask, mandates, on and on) and much connected with the Russia-Ukraine conflict. I won’t even mention politics in the U. S. which is at a point of “animosity, estrangement and separation” I don’t think I have seen in my lifetime.

Just sit back and wait till this aspect ends by next February? Tempting, but let’s try to understand it better so we can live out its final months with more wisdom.

Grant Lewi writes about it as if to a person who has it in his horoscope: “You are a pioneer and in some way eccentric, independent in thought and action. Your independence doesn’t work very strongly for your success, and you have to learn cooperation, tact, and diplomacy. [Apply that now to certain world leaders and their actions during these three years.] There is a note of quarrelsomeness. None the less you are a strong and influential character. You are forceful in an electric sort of way and impress people even when they don’t like your manner or your methods. You must guard against a peculiarly destructive temper that underlies your disposition.” This could be applied to a lot of people I am thinking of, that is, how they have been acting during the past couple of years regardless of their personal horoscopes.

C E O Carter says that this aspect bestows “elements of genius or at least of talent.” But the person “may be something of a nuisance to common-sense people.” He or she is likely to seem contradictory, altering his or her theories between “rigid autocracy and anarchic freedom.” The rigid autocracy would be Saturn, the anarchic freedom Uranus. Whichever way the current flows, he is convinced he is right. Carter recommends that he (we) cultivate “the virtue of humility.” Otherwise there can be “violent, fitful, wayward traits of character.”

Robert DeLuce calls Uranus “the Lord of evolutionary progress” whereas Saturn is “property, position, social standing: Frequently only chains that bind a man to a treadmill existence. The hard aspects of Uranus to Saturn will free him.” I sense what DeLuce is trying to say but maybe he goes too far. The imposed structure of Saturn can profitably restrain Uranus when he gets too far out of line in revolutionary (not evolutionary), unrealistic directions.

Do you sense some of what all this could mean in you life? We have four more months to work with this tense yet potentially useful energy. Unfortunately, astrology alone cannot tell us who is ethically or politically right or wrong when there is such “revolutionary or evolutionary conflict.” We have to choose our own position and that could be one lesson we are learning. Who in the political sphere is promoting real freedom, and who is obstructing it? You have your answer; I have mine.

Isabel Hickey tries to reconcile the square between these two: “Uranus rules the spirit and the spirit is always free. Nothing can harm it yet it cannot operate in the outer world without a form or mold to contain it, Saturn.” It presses against the form when it feels change is needed. Yet it needs some form, maybe the changed one, for security and foundation.

Clues for a New Fortnight

We have a full day of void-of-course along with the |difficult third| which is the moon’s opposition with Saturn. I am feeling this latter as I write on Wednesday as gloom, dispiritedness and lack of enthusiasm. That could be with us in spades on Thursday unless we are models of Pollyanna optimism. Don’t despair; the path winds disturbingly but can come back to a form which makes sense to you eventually.

A new Fortnight, based on the lunar nodes, begins Thursday at 6:22p PT | 9:22p ET, continuing through October 4. Here are a few of the Sabian symbols:

Mars in the previous fortnight: “A conversation by telepathy.” I experienced this as if floating in a pond of vibrations from various people, some known, some strangers, some living and some departed (still living though in a different mode), intimating to me various stimulating or uplifting link-messages. The new fortnight: “A cafeteria.” The keyword is Supply. This could be concern about worldwide supplies or necessary foodstuffs. In your personal life it could be examination of you diet and purchasing somewhat unusual foods, or other items, or doing so in an unusual way. We tend to function objectively with a focus on necessities.

Mercury in the previous fortnight: “A blazing fireplace in a deserted home.” This was Buckingham Palace and Balmoral Castle, but also any situation of your own where you felt the absence of those now missing, though you wanted to preserve their participation. The keyword was Guardianship. The new fortnight: “A boy with a censer.” Keyword: Rapture. “He makes his conscious appeal to God,” says Dr. Jones. “His motive is spiritual because he knows he must share any reality he cares to possess.”

Venus in the previous fortnight: “A bride with her veil snatched away.” This was an invitation to deeper intimacies, and I felt it in surprising connections, for example at a Meet-Up I attended. It was not always phallic or erotic but always invitational. The new fortnight: “A false call unheard in attention to immediate service.” We ought to focus on what can help people. “Immortality of the soul” is based on “human responsibility.” What would interrupt our deeper purposes should be rejected to safeguard others as well as ourselves.

The sun in the previous fortnight: “A royal coat of arms.” This was evident in all the media attention to the Royal Family. For you it was a realization of some of the prerogatives you have, which came as a pleasant surprise. The new fortnight: “The ideals of a man abundantly crystallized.” Is this in a person? That may seem too good to be true, but maybe. Is it in a group or project? Maybe. You may experience a personification of what you idealize, and it is good to follow such a footprint until one has exhausted or fulfilled its dazzling potentials. (It might help to make a short list of persons or situations “abundantly crystallizing” your ideals.)

I’m writing on Tuesday while the moon is void of course, and because we remain in the Mercury Retrograde period until October 2, we are in The Doldrums! My ship has no wind in its sails. First, my computer and all internet functions have been slow, gummed up. Second, I read the headlines of The Financial Times of London, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times, and I find everything chaotic. What about Ukraine? Nobody knows. The southern border and illegal immigrants? Nobody knows. The stock market? Nobody knows. It has been in a slump since the beginning of the Dark Hermetic Epoch on Friday August 19, down by 8.82%. Will it go up today (Wednesday)? Nobody knows, but sometimes even though the Fed is expected to raise interest rates on a given Wednesday, the increase has already been built into investor expectations and so the Market perversely goes up when the Fed announces the supposedly bad news.

Likewise in your personal life: Many if not most things are perversely indeterminable and so you have to fly by the seat of your pants.

And if you look at the news you will find that most people seem to be in that situation. Rents, mortgage rates and food and energy costs are up, etc. Malaise! Mayonnaise would be better although overeating is not recommended even though I suspect a lot of it is going on, out of sheer frustration. Not mayonnaise but malaise it is.

Of course one can attend to one’s spiritual life and retain or build up one’s faith in one’s spiritual teachers and in the Supreme. That is essential always, and specially in times like this.

1 Waiting! Investors are waiting for this week’s “bear market” to turn around. Thousands of Britons are waiting in line to view their deceased monarch. Others are waiting for a better employment deal, as: from Friday’s Wall Street Journal:

“More Workers Head to the Picket Lines

"Teachers, nurses, railroad workers and others are seeking pay raises to catch up to inflation while the tight labor market has taken away some of the risk of walking off the job.”

It’s the DHE! (Dark Hermetic Epoch). Another word that comes up could be made official: The Doldrums! My old dictionary defines “doldrum” as “a becalmed state,” or else, as “the doldrums,” “dullness; low spirits.” That’s where we are. It’s especially noticeable while Mercury remains retrograde, until October 2. I am struggling to write this.

2 Unreliability. A couple hours ago I tried, foolishly, to buy a product I had some doubts about, and my credit card did not work online. Why not? Then I got a text from my bank warning of fraud. I replied “No, I do not want this” and mercifully my bank took it off my bill. I wouldn’t doubt that more people get swindled during these times (to October 2 but even beyond that to October 17). The unreliability extends to the media, where the standard commercial outlets use their tricks to sneak political propaganda into their supposedly factual reporting. Disgusting.

3 Let’s look again at the Fortnightly chart for September 8-21. We did that last weekend but it remains in effect through Wednesday of this week. It has Mercury opposite Jupiter (sometimes fraud and lying) and Venus square Mars (discord between or within the sexes where love or erotic attraction is concerned). But at best Mercury opposite Jupiter can be deep thinking, considering all the contradictory angles to arrive at profound reconciliation. That is Hegelian dialectic. And at best the Venus square Mars fracas can be stimulation, whether in competition, argument, or erotic sado-masochistic play. Here are some of the symbols for the fortnight:

4 “A young maiden weeping over a grave” represents melancholy and mourning, which continues to go on in the U. K. and probably in your life when you think of someone beloved who is missing. “A blazing fireplace in a deserted home” is a haunting image suggesting both the onset of winter and the absence of loved ones. In some news media there was actually a photo of the Queen in Balmoral Castle just a few days before the end, standing alone and smiling before a blazing fireplace!

5 Does this mean we are utterly alone? No, there is “a conversation by telepathy.” There are “organic relationships of personality” which intimate more to us than can be photographed. There are “illimitable ties between each individual and every one of his fellows” (Dr. Jones). If not underhandedly seductive, this can be “a fabric of invisible sympathies and co-operations.”

6 As for possible seduction, Venus square Mars brings out spicy teasing. “A woman is blindfolded and a man is leading her.” This could be “a tangled skein of complications.” Influence, even to the point of domination, is one thing; entanglement another. “A well-favored woman, but of evil aspect, stands before a mirror.” Some of either sex are sensual and worldly, susceptible to flattery, vain, and easily led. This could end in shame or at least a red face (or bottom).

7 “A man riding on a horse near the edge of a cliff, looking down into a valley where people are at work” suggests danger from having “a position over others” and misusing it. “A man in a mask stands beneath the shadow of a tree at night. At his feet there is a dead cow.” Some are wily and acquisitive, and might find willing or unwilling victims while Mercury is retrograde making them subject to bad decisions. Yet the perpetrators could be “deceived in their own powers” and fail tp plunder the wealth they seek.

8 The gentler Sabian symbols give us “a man muffled up, with a rakish silk hat” who dramatizes his own sophistication whether or not it embarrasses anyone. He uses whatever comes up in his experience with superb aplomb. And lo, he may come upon “a bride with her veil snatched away.” Watch out. Mars square Venus can be haste toward the consummation of a relationship not based on solid values. Yet there is an invitation toward self-giving and “one should continue along the path of experience one has once chosen for one’s own.”

9 “A royal coat of arms” brings us back to the royal family playing such a compelling role on the world stage this fortnight. For yourself, it could be that you become aware of some of the prerogatives you have overlooked. You are not exploiting people if you live according to the laws and customs of “the elders,” thus preserving your privileges in a way all respect. Real aristocracy includes worthiness. Of not many can it be said “This is a man among men” or “a woman among women.” Those well-regarded spontaneously elicit goodwill, plaudits and compliance.

10 If everything seems a little unreal, we can chalk that up to Mercury Retrograde, “the doldrums” when there is no wind to power our ship or else we have to spend a lot of time setting and resetting the sails. “There is green everywhere; every object is a dull green. At the same time everything is on the move.” “One will ever be seeking rest, but find none. Changes one makes leave one as far off from the goal as ever.” Or that is how it seems, though in fact spiritual evolution continues. “Obey thy nature and fulfill thy fate; / Accept the difficulty and godlike toil, / For the slow-paced omniscient purpose live. / The Enigma’s knot is tied in humankind.” / “The high gods look on man and watch and choose / Today’s impossibles for the future’s base.”

1 Malaise, or just chaos? The stock market dropped by a huge four percent on Tuesday, the biggest drop in more than two years. Politics has heated up to the point that half of Americans are starting to believe the other half a threat to their security. Disputes are employing lawyers but do not seem good for anyone else. The U. K. and much of the British Commonwealth are in an extended mourning process for their Queen which mitigates business as usual.

2 “Out of pattern” is what is happening. I just got a call from someone inviting me to a meeting that is highly unusual and I accepted, because sometimes one has to go with Mercury’s seemingly erratic tendencies while it is retrograde. That can be creative, opening up areas of experience one had not considered before.

3 Delays. Much seems delayed. There is a new King, Charles, and my advice to him would be, calm down and don’t precipitate anything novel or untraditional for a while. He is considering a journey to all the Commonwealth nations. Fine, but I would say, Take your time planning that and let it simmer up to October 2 at least while Mercury is still retrograde.

4 Uncertainty. Where are my friends and associates? What is my agenda? When will I travel? All seems tentative.

5 Conflicts. This is partly the Venus square Mars aspect. It’s happening in politics and elsewhere. People can be pugnacious. “Your way and my way do not both fit on this highway.” So there has to be some kind of readjustment, which can be either separation or something more creative.

6 It seems that we need to overcome the fear of experience. Stalemate can be changed to something more thrilling. An experimentative approach to people can overcome their sensitivities and result in fascinating interaction.

7 Or, if alone and bereft, one can make life an art, organize things in a way which feels pleasing, utilizing Venus’s position as the Planet of Oriental Appearance (rising each day before the sun). Maybe you alone, and the elves and fairies, will notice the beauty you evince.

8 The |difficult third of this week| is at its peak but this does not have to be terrible. One may be angry or riled up over something, or feel that things drag on stressfully, but with the perspective of these eight points one might make a lemonade out of the lemon.

1 We discussed the Venus-square-Mars aspect (getting closer by the day, exact later this week) in its role of “spicy eroticism” which can be on the horseplay side, as mildly sado-masochistic. A less pleasant side of it is just plain dissatisfaction with a seemingly available erotic connection or friendship. This can stem from actual unkindness or from over-sensitivity. Is that person really so crude and insensitive, or indifferently unkind? Why am I not seen for the fascinating person I really am? And so on. If such frustration bursts out into the sado-masochistic horseplay or joking, nobody knows what will happen for sure. Either the aspect results in the opposites just repulsing one another, and they separate, or in their constant vibration toward yet against each other, so that there is a stimulating erotic or sexual tension. The latter seems preferable to most of us most of the time, though simple separation can be easier.

2 If liquid Mercury is tossed on a surface (I believe, from high school chemistry) it shatters into a million tiny pieces. It seems this is what happens to our minds, sometimes, while Mercury is retrograde (until October 2). Today I listened to a Tim Pool podcast in which the discussants went in all directions, interrupting one another, mentioning stuff from the past such as John Adams’s warnings about foreign wars and Woodrow Wilson’s precipitation of the U. S. into World War I. This was not wrong but was inconclusive, as so much has to be during the Retrograde cycle. The participants were trying to make sense of fragments which need to be brought together, somehow. These periods are good for us insofar as they impel us to do hard thinking even if we realize its result is a scaffolding rather than a completed structure. This can be in regard to politics or philosophy, religion or art, carpentry or technology. The process is progressive even when it seems REgressive, and it can result in REmarkable insights. (Those interested in the royal family of England can see it going on in the constant retrospectives of not only the Queen’s life but all her children’s, during this MR mourning period. What has already happened becomes alive again because of the suggestive links it has within itself and to the present and future.)

In the report for Thursday I made a big deal out of a “triple witching day” because of (a) the Dark Hermetic Epoch, (b) the Hard Third of the Week (moon with Saturn) and (c) the moon void-of-course virtually all day. What happened in big news was that Queen Elizabeth II passed from this world about three hours after the moon went void-of-course. I have noted here, often, that the v-of-c periods can be “the end of something.” So it was in this case. Also I have noted that there are more REsignations during any DHE (Slow Hermetic Epoch). This was a big “resignation” for a Queen whose even temper and considerateness were a bright spot for 70 years. Unexpectedly to myself, I broke down into tears when I saw a perfect photo of her. This woman had character and religious faith.

As a tribute to her, I shall divulge something about the Tarot Calendar I discovered decades ago. I have kept it under wraps because I doubt anyone would believe in it. People are amazingly indifferent to most real occult knowledge (or call it speculation if you wish). The Queen’s birthdate is April 21. April is the fourth month and so ruled by the Emperor card of the Tarot. 21 is The World, the final card in the series, and the Queen had a world-role, constantly visiting and revisiting the nations constituting her Empire (the British Commonwealth). She was the most enduring World Figure for seven decades. Adding 4 and 21 gives us 25, from which we subtract 22 (the total number of cards in the cycle) and the result is 3, The Empress card. She was both the Emperor and Empress of The World, to put it extravagantly but in a way which makes colorful the role she played.

Mercury goes retrograde Friday at 3:39a UT which is late Thursday in the Western Hemisphere. Following shall be more than a week of royal ritualism for the Queen culminating with her funeral which I believe is scheduled for Monday the 19th. It is fitting that Britons, and some of the rest of us, REview, REspect and maybe REvere this amazing life of duty during the Mercury Retrograde period, which always shows a tendency to REmember the past and REminisce in various ways. This is essentially forward-looking because savoring the past prepares us for the future.

I’m not encouraging fear or paranoia, but in honesty, the above info, together with the fact that we are in a Dark Hermetic Epoch (until October 17), shows that today is a “triple witching day” or one when, as on 9/11/2001, when that condition prevailed at the time of the planes smashing into the Twin Towers, things can be unexpected, dicey or dangerous. All normal care and caution should be observed. This is not inventing fears, but anticipating what might go wrong in order to prevent it. Normal, routine work can go well if one takes moments of rest for quiet thinking, meditation and prayer in order to preserve equilibrium. Otherwise, one might feel, “I’m just lost.” Technically it is not a good time for making major decisions, signing agreements, or making major purchases, but of course one has to rely on common sense and judgment rather than any strict rule. If in doubt, postponing until Friday could be wise.

1 DHE watch (Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch extending to Oct. 17, getting worse when Mercury goes retrograde this Friday): I moved my bed yesterday. Then at night when actually trying to sleep in it I realized I had to move it back. REstore it to its original position. A lot of bother. Then, today, I had to REstart my computer when it froze up. Then my favorite news show kept fading away so that I had to reload it just at crucial points when I missed minutes of information. This was not a glitch in my system but in theirs. That stuff is happening, for you too most likely.

2 A judge’s decision to have a Special Master to oversee the proceedings of the FBI against Donald Trump is a RE move which should be good for Trump. In a way I predicted it when I said that the FBI really had NOTHING on Trump and would need as many lawyers as he does. This is partly because the FBI went too far in its raid on Mar-a-Lago, not having a warrant that covered all the things they did, which could make the resulting so-called evidence unusable in court.

3 Boris Johnson is forced to resign as PM of Britain. As I have mentioned, REsignations happen a lot more often in the DHE, regardless of the cause.

4 Electricity costs for individual households in Europe have doubled in some places over the past year. One out of six American households are behind on utility bills. Aquarius rules electricity, which became prevalent just after Uranus was discovered; look at the two wavy lines denoting the sign. Shock waves, and now sticker shock for consumers of that wavy commodity. This is, I believe, the square between Saturn and Uranus, which has been with us since January 2020. 1 Yesterday we discussed the Venus square Mars aspect which began Saturday and continues through the 27th. Today I hear more comment on Human Events Daily about sex-change procedures performed on young children. This is abhorrent to me. And to most of us, I believe. People are waking up to its implications and harms and I believe there will be a lot of that during this Mars (male) square Venus (female) aspect.

2 A far different side of the same aspect is “friendly fighting” or semi-sadistic stuff with an erotic impulse behind it (spanking is one example). I believe this will be in evidence, whether other-sex or same-sex.

3 We should not forget about the Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch continuing until October 17. It will be even more intense beginning Friday this week when Mercury turns retrograde until October 2. For me it has been little things, such as a glitch in my astrological program which forced me to restart it a few minutes ago, and last night I spilled a drink on some papers and the carpet. (Fortunately there seems no permanent damage, but it was not a happy moment.) You are not going crazy or senile if you have such accidents or if you seem forgetful and absent-minded.

4 People seem to move more often during the Dark Epochs. When Mercury slows down, people take stock and pack their things and move to a new home. This might seem paradoxical but it is something like this: The “clutch is out” during the Slow and Retrograde phases and so one can shift gears.

5 For me this has been something as simple as moving my bed to a different location, which I did today and feel good about it.

6 For Virgo individuals, this could be an actual move in many cases, or else remodeling, redecorating, or spending some time away from home. For them, preparation could be going on now but it may be more likely to happen beginning about Septembe4 17 and for a month after that.

7 On Bryan Dean Wright’s podcast today I heard that some research has shown that “just sitting and thinking” for a while, without phone or internet, has proved to improve moods, efficiency, and health. It’s interesting that he chose to present this during a Dark or Slow Epoch, a few days before Mercury goes retrograde.

8 If you were to “just sit” for five minutes, you would sit through one complete degree of the zodiac (on average) passing the eastern horizon, the rising degree. Fascinating fact: The average length of a popular song, and even some of Hayden’s symphony-movements, is around four minutes, or from three to five. Somehow without knowing it composers and singers have concluded that their songs should last for about the duration of one degree of the rising sign! (That is also one degree of the sign at the midheaven, or overhead point.)

9 Or, one could ask, How did the astronomers, astrologers, Pythagoreans and cabalists who devised the system of 360 degrees for the zodiac have known that centuries later musicians would craft their pieces to last for one degree of the earth’s daily rotation? Life is a mystery.

1 It’s interesting that Biden’s horrifying, warlike, divisive speech on Thursday was delivered while the moon was “fallen” in Scorpio, his sun-sign, and then on Saturday Donald Trump delivered a powerful speech (at a rally in Pennsylvania) while the moon was in Sagittarius, where it was when he was born. It was vintage Trump, sometimes arrogant and offensive, but largely lucid and sane. (I am neither totally MAGA nor Woke Left, but listen to both sides, as is necessary if one is to be fair-minded.)

2 The mid-term elections in November? I am going to withdraw myself from predicting how they will go, at least for now. At present I see neither a huge win for Trump (Republicans) nor Biden (Democrats). I admit it is unclear to me.

3 Venus watch: Of course she has a lot to do with affection, love, social life and friendship, but also with financial good fortune, satisfying purchases, etc. Her sad opposition with Saturn ends as of now, Labor Day! We should feel more disposed to friendliness in social contacts. Money worries may recede.

4 However, in the “one damn thing after another” category, beginning Saturday (the 3rd) Venus will be square Mars until September 28 (by standard ten-degree orb). This may not be as sorrowful as Venus opposite Saturn but can be harsh. One member of a love-match may feel like a thorn in the flesh to the other. There can be bickering. Whether this turns into erotic excitation depends on the situation but “revenge sex” is possible. Of course at the very worst this could be sexual cruelty, even rape, or unwanted pregnancy. Usually not, of course, though it can be “turbulent experience through love and sex” with “inharmony and strangeness.” All this can be “temperamental, unconventional and stormy.” (Quotations are from Grant Lewi.) However, one might have a “spicy personality” and be “magnetic, loving company and a good time.”

5 Today, with Luna in Capricorn square to both Mercury and Jupiter which ae opposed to each other, and then Luna trine Uranus, some sort of study could be fruitful, or perhaps writing, or working out complex seemingly contradictory issues or delineations.
