Challenge:  There are warnings about love, pseudo-love, fake love or fatal attraction.  'A well-favored woman or man stands before a mirror, but she or he is "of evil aspect".'  This could be something sensuous or worldly which leads to shame or downfall.  Further, money could be involved (Venus square Pluto):  'A bag of money on a table; near it stands a dark woman masked.'  One might attract both friends and money, but misuse them and be victimized.  In contrast is 'a priest in his robe standing in a cloister beneath the light of a window,' in other words someone who has putatively risen above both greed and sexual attraction, thereby gaining protection and favor.

Process:  What is your heritage?  It is good to be conscious of it.  'A Jewish rabbi' sums up in his attitudes and teachings the rock-like traditions of his congregation.  Others find security in more esoteric teachings--strange, curious and sublime (as do Kabalists).  At the pinnacle of spiritual teaching is 'a man among men; thousands will look up to him for light and guidance' (Charubel).  This could be someone you know of, or re-find and learn from today.  

Blessing:  Likewise we have 'the sun shining brightly' signifying a public character whom the world appreciates and finds essential. You night note several of these, or one who stands out.  She or he bears 'a royal coat of arms' or the insignia of an elder of a tribe who has definite prerogatives.  Where is dialogue and room for differing viewpoints in all this?  'Two heads are looking out and beyond the shadows.'  This is the intelligence gained through discourse or Hegelian dialectic, putting one view beside another like rubbing two sticks together.  The advanced souls mentioned are even more advanced if they can do this.

Hurricane Update:  During Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst ever (August 23- 31, 2005), Mars was square Neptune while Mercury opposed it,  a T square involving the planet of the sea and water, Neptune.  This time, with Hurricane Ida, we had both Mars and Mercury opposite Neptune.  This is still effective, and of course people are working out of the after-effects.  I am always astounded that so-called astrologers don't even notice such things.  Guys, where are your heads?   (I can guess:  Thinking about somebody's latest star-crossed love-affair or non-affair.)  

More basically, Mars opposite Neptune is an aspect calling forth heroism, as if someone were both a spiritual and a military leader at the same time (something like Steve Bannon, born with Mars conjunct Neptune).  It was the brilliant astrologer Grant Lewi who pointed this out.  You may be thinking about your mission, for which you would fight, or the mission of someone you support.  

Venus beginning to square Pluto arouses libido, and sometimes in a way which pits money against sex, or sex against money, or makes one question the status of oneself as compared with the status of someone with whom one is in love.  Is someone playing the gigolo, or does it just look that way? Whose finger is in whose purse?  Lust may overtake love, or be confused or conflated with it.  

There could  be savvy use of a money-sense in business or investment.  One might experiment, in one's mind, with a future home-site or place one might visit. Or would one stagnate there?    

One should beware of greed and arrogant pomposity.  

One could express oneself jocosely and kindly within a community setting anytime and into the evening (moon trine Jupiter).

The large view:  It is good to finish up, stay with, insist on completing major efforts you are involved with, until September 6, when a new Slow or Dark Hermetic Epoch begins, this one with very good aspects affording relief from intense tensions.  (I have yet to write an expanded view of what that two-month period [until November  3] might mean; it's like walking a tightrope and I don't want to mislead anyone.)

Today, Monday:  Nobility in strife involving career.  Spiritual strength from sticking with an almost military plan or strategy to do what is right .  Decisions about drug or food supplements or treatments. Avoidance of anything that would poison.   Choice of friends in accord with true values, and dropping those who would drag one down.  Or else helping them to rise up.  

There could be nasty authoritarianism over vaccination and masks, with Luna square Mars in Virgo.  People could be spiteful or make enemies.  

Uncertainty about friends; choosing those true-blue. 

An emphasis on home or one's headquarters is strong, and this applies of course to those Afghans who are being forced to be refugees.  For the rest of us it could be dreaming of a different home or location, though knowing this is impossible or unlikely.  What is your castle in the sky?

Some good vibrations from the moon trine Venus in her own sign Libra grow even stronger in the afternoon and evening into late hours.  Love peeks out whether intensely or coyly, at least in one's own consciousness or while watching some entertainment or reading. I don't promise more than that.  Being out on the street could be good for a while because this is a trine from the moon in Gemini.  Interesting, attractive clothing.

On Friday as I write I am having computer and printer troubles and am postponing what I intended to write about the coming Dark Hermetic Epoch of September 6 - November 2.

As I write we are at the peak of the |difficult third| of this week, which shall end very late Saturday evening, so I hope you will be feeling better on Sunday even though many things remain unresolved.  I am not promising utterly smooth going beginning September 6 but things should be more comfortable I believe.

As I write I hear about the thirteen American servicemen killed in Afghanistan (with an equal number injured) and no one can be content with that.  I have written extensively about the astrological problems of the current time-frame.  I hope in the Sunday forecast (to be posted very early Saturday) to give some hints about the probably smoother time-frame coming up (most of September and all of October).  Meanwhile I don't think a poem can hurt, and maybe it will help.  It is based on the prevalent symbols for this Saturday:  

A fat pig lying down thinks, "What shall I eat or drink?"

In a room filled with machinery and jars of chemicals

An inventor experiments.  But outside a foreign man 

In black draws his sword to fence with a native.

A lion's head, exposed, is alert to defend.

Further, he provokes the attack. A man, lightly

\Ready for Anywhere/

|Karmically serious, sobering, challenging third| of this week continues until very late Saturday night

I keep mentioning that this summer period (July 7 through September 5) is a hard one, not to depress you but to help you 'buck up' until we get to what looks like a more relaxing time in ten days.  The two major oppositions marking out this period (because they were exact at the moment of Mercury's conjunction with the sun) are Mars opposite Jupiter, said by astrologer CEO Carter to be the hardest aspect of all (and it was in the chart including 9/11/2001), which correlates with war often or battles of some sort such as the Afghanistan situation, and also the sun opposite Saturn in the sign of the circulatory system so that we have the 'wars' over vaccination.  Of course, none of this is the cosmos abusing us, but trying to show us something about ourselves.  Not always easy.  Enough of that for now; I hope to write about the coming Epoch (September 6 through November 2) in the Sunday report.

I read these reports myself, often three times a day, to check on how they work out, and I have been finding the poetic ones to be even better than the prosaic ones insofar as feeling uplifted or aided by reading them.  I recommend perusing them slowly, at least twice, and then again in the evening of the day covered, and maybe the next day to review what happened in your consciousness on the day preceding. I believe that these symbols come deep from the collective subconscious, and putting them in sonnet form develops them magically. 

Friday: 

The farmer's cart, loaded with manure,

Passes by a woman, innocent and restless,

Who senses a dark being behind her back, but she

Trusts in her friend, a soldier ready for anything.

The cattle-dealer with a whip is not subtle but rugged,

While the mummer with a mask can mimic anyone,

Primed for comedic theater.  They meet on a long

Road going nowhere, future-unconcerned.

The swimming race eliminates a few contenders.

Exhausted, some emerge from the pool to drift

Into a noon siesta on patio lounge-chairs.

They dream of personified nature-powers, fairies.

Recuperation draws elan vital from any

While good things can develop during this hard Epoch (until September 6), we are not likely to feel very "up" about them but rather "is that all there is?"  It seems that many will be working out good business or money plans or deals, though there could be doubt about them or a feeling that they are not as great as one would wish.  We should be grateful for what we have.  Travel, not just for Afghans, seems difficult or fraught with delays, or maybe just rejected for now.  Personal relations could be sweet at times, with Venus in Libra her own sign, yet still indefinite or questionable.  

One wonders about one's popularity but feels drawn to younger people in a benevolent manner.  There is acumen in divining what comes next in many situations.

Right thinking and acting could produce 'a field of corn standing high and ripe.'  Good fortune can be shared in unusual ways with those of diverse backgrounds or racial complexions.  This might be through artificial interests or pleasures rather than natural ones.

Anyone suffering from an accident needs deference and kindness.  Anyone who has made 'a bad match' could endure solitariness, which is not altogether bad.  There can be escape through enchantments, as 'children blowing soap bubbles.'

~Gravitating Toward Character Plus Conviviality~

Challenge:  'Wading in mud knee-deep, the opposite bank enveloped in fog' is what we have been experiencing all summer.  'Perished hopes and abortive speculations.'  Some may turn to 'a promiscuous lot of creatures kept as pets.'  Others could drift to criminality, 'a wolf carrying away a lamb,' that is, display deception, avarice or cruelty.  That could lead to 'a prison door fitted with iron spikes,' or, more happily, for most of us, just seclusion or self-imprisonment.

Process:  'An orangutan' is dextrous and able to maintain his own against any tangles.  The challenges of the summer have made each of us 'a real man' or 'real woman' as displayed in 'a man's head' making his or her self-assurance evident, based on developed character.  Then we could be in 'a canoe approaching safety through dangerous waters,' as an answer to the problems of the first paragraph.  

Blessing:  'A lovely garden of flowers in a peaceful valley' represents a passive sort of pleasure allied with natural beauty (Venus trine Saturn).  Then there could be more animation (moon in Pisces opposite Mars and Mercury), 'Several men in festive attire are gathered together, talking.'  There could be 'a festival or assembling together of villagers in gala costume,' sociability and conviviality.  There could be success through bringing together people mutually advantageous to one another.

~Reprise of a Would-Be Summer~

We continue reprising this hard summer, the Bright or Fast Hermetic Epoch extending from July 7 through September 5.  You should read the first section of this in yesterday's (Saturday's) report if you haven't already.    

'A strong hand supplanting political hysteria' covers a whole lot.  Which hand is strong and who is hysterical depends on one's political loyalties or opinions, and I don't want to get into it!  Some think that Mike Lindell is hysterically mad, and others think he is 'a strong hand' trying to settle things concerning election fraud.  Not many think that Biden is a 'strong hand' but he is trying to be, and trying to supplant what he probably sees as 'hysteria' about Afghanistan.  Likewise Taliban leaders doubtless think they are the 'strong hands' quelling or supplanting disagreement.  Too many 'strong hands' in the U. S. media giants are trying to 'supplant political hysteria' by censoring news and views, or presenting questionable or deliberately hoked-up so-called news or badly jaundiced views.  Who is the real 'strong hand' and who is hysterical?  I leave it to you.  (I have my own view; yet it seems almost that everyone is hysterical at this point, even the 'strong hands.')  We have 'two bulls fighting on the edge of a precipice' to point up the danger.

Charubel warns us against besetting sins which creep up on us:  'Too revolting to be given' suggests something viewed on Netflix.  'Keep out of bad company' recommends our seer, 'and seek to develop thy higher nature; by such a course thou mayest save thyself.'  Whether a sense of humor is a sin, considering the state of the world, I cannot say, but we have 'a man muffled up, with a rakish silk hat' to represent the sophistication which can bring irony, or a sense of proportion, to disputes.  He might also be sometimes a mysterious figure who seeks no one, but is sought out because of his intuitive mental vision.  Such individuals are hidden treasures.  

The Sabian symbols tend to be optimistic, and we have 'spiritist phenomena' as a sensitivity to the invisible and the supernatural or the enfolding of immortal realities.  This could amount to one being 'tete-a-tete with one's inspiration' to the point of ecstasy, manifested as talent of a rare sort.  As for unity with nature in a summer with difficult weather and the smoke of fires, Signor Borelli gives us a Moon River symbol, bless him:  'A river winds its way through a broad tract of open fields under the moon's rays.'  This is calm, joy, tranquility and harmony.  I have not felt much of that, and the aspects of the season do little to promote it, but still it is there to be sensed and appropriated if we have the nerve, wit, patience and inspiration to do so.  Then we approach 'the field of Ardath in bloom' which mystic meadow of ancient Babylon displays a self-illumining continuity of the inherent friendliness of the universe.

The summer that would be if it could.  Let's salvage what we can of it.

Full Moon of Leo-Aquarius occurs Sunday at 5:03a PT | 8:03a ET | 12:03p UT

There are sixteen more days in this Bright Hermetic Epoch and it will be good to consider, again, the chart for the entire period (July 7 through September 5).  I use the entire chart (set up for the moment the sun and Mercury are exactly together, or Mercury seemingly 'in the heart of the sun') to make these observations, but focailize on symbols for the degrees, which have proved stunningly accurate in historic research.

Many are concerned about money; we have an opposition of Mars and Jupiter hitting the money houses.  Yet for Jupiter Charubel gives us 'a man reclining on rustic seat 'neath a shady tree, on whom a ray of sunshine has fallen' and says this shows good fortune and wealth, but that one 'lives only for oneself and seldom benefits others.'  This could be a suggestion to consider how generous one truly is.  We all are prospering in one way or another, at least being provided with essentials through government services if need be.  However, even multi-millionaires may feel there is 'never enough' to cover needs and hopes, so we have from Signor Borelli 'a solitary rock jutting up from a waste of sand' which indicates, says Sepharial, poverty because of a lack of direction and purpose. Yet there can be a 'cold, mathematical fixity and steadiness' so we can calculate how to secure what we need.

How valuable is all this planning, getting and spending?  The sun-Mercury conjunction points to, says Charubel, 'a shovel suspended in mid-air' digging pointlessly while its wielder 'sows to the wind.'  What aspects of your life seem as fruitless as this?  Along with that go 'fireworks exploding in mid-air above a crowd' illuminating ephemeral popularity.  Spectacular stuff, but where is the applause now?  

Many believe that the FBI instigated the so-called 'insurrection' (a total failure by the way) on January 6, and the truth about this is coming out thanks to Darren Beattie and others.  'A man is peeping around a corner at a company of armed men, who are reconnoitering.'  The forensic audits of the November 3 election continue, and there is much 'peeping around corners' in that area, of necessity.  Sadly this also applies to Afghanistan where people have to be painfully wary of any move they make and try to figure out what the Taliban will do.  'A column of smoke ascending on a gigantic scale, followed by a terrible burst of flame. The phenomenon partakes of the character of an explosion.'  Charubel says that this is not fate but a tendency in such a disastrous direction.  I will not list the problems, including floods, fires, and earthquakes, to which this might apply.  Let us pray again for women, Christians, Americans, and others who may be in peril in Afghanistan.

Some Afghan women handed over their babies to American servicemen to get them safely out of the country.  'A naked infant, exposed, is sleeping alone in an open and dreary place.  Around and above that helpless form are beasts and birds of prey.  But, by some strange power, unseen, this embodied picture of innocence is protected.'  Charubel has a way of making things graphically clear.  In your own life this might show that you are being protected, despite your troubles, by angelic powers.

}Maintaining Poise{

|Karmiically serious, sobering, challenging third| of this week is with us until Sunday

As I've been mentioning, this summer has been a challenge to all, and also to me as an astrologer continually trying to refine his methods and make them more accurate and helpful for those who read these reports.

A basic conclusion I am reaching is that the best way to understand what is happening in our lives is to base our understanding of it all on the particular aspects among the planets which are exact at the moment Mercury conjoins the sun at the center of each Hermetic Epoch (two-month period, approximately).  

There, in one sentence I have given you the secret of what it took me years of searching and struggling to learn. 

The next Epoch will be a Dark or Slow one, that is, the period when Mercury slows down and then goes retrograde and then speeds up slowly.  It extends from September 6 through November 2.  The planetary configurations for that period are much smoother and more pleasant, as a whole, than for the current Bright or Quick Epoch (July 7 through September 5).  And so I can predict a happier time, though of course not everything becomes simple and easy.  It seems to me a good vacation period, for those who can arrange that.  If not, one could make a sort of vacation of one's work by rearranging, rescheduling, and having fun with it.  

True, in any Dark or Slow Epoch one can get confused and things can get tangled; there is 'too much' going on or one tries to grasp too much at once; but the insights one gets can be exhilarating.  Old friends and relatives are prominent in a happy manner.  It is a time for reunions, and especially the one coming up just two weeks from now.  I wish we could all take a vacation or go on a cruise.  I am glad to report that the Bright Epoch after that, from November 3 through December 28, also looks very good and smooth, much happier than this dreadful summer has been.  

Still, not everything is horrid and I hope you will take heart from what I just said, keeping your poise and balance (with Venus in Libra the sign of balance) for the next couple of weeks.

\Sinking or Rising/

I am feeling compassion for those who work at unrewarding or wearisome jobs, because I am feeling today (Wednesday as I write) the suffering of the world at large in a big way.  I felt that nothing was worth doing excet praying, meditating, or sleeping (if G*d would grant peaceful sleep).  I felt that I should fast the whole day, and so far I have partaken of nothing except some powdered milk in coffee.  What is really worth doing?  On top of all that, there are computer problems which have made what should have taken five minutes to write ten minutes or more.  And that is just the beginning of a long session.  Is anybody reading this?  A few, but I never hear from you.  It is depressing.  I guess I am writing it for G*d and myself.  Two readers.  

The psalm (79) for today exactly captures what I wanted to pray for the Christians, women, and others who could be persecuted by the Taliban in Afghanistan:  "Let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee; according to the greatness of thy power preserve thou those that are appointed to die; . . . "  No one should be 'appointed to die' by other human beings, no matter what their beliefs or their status.  

I stated, in the Sunday and Tuesday reports, the difficulties of this time but let's not forget the happier notes.  Venus in Libra for a couple days (and remaining until September 10) is in her own sign and the day she entered I found myself in a Co-op grocery store surrounded by beautiful young women!  Usually when I go there I notice no one except any employee I might have to deal with.  This time a sweet lady ahead of me in line kept turning and smiling at me.  Yes, Venus in Libra is good.  Also, last night, despite the ominous nature of the time and the aspects, I had some very pleasant dreams about women.  They were looking up one another's information in magazines and on the internet in order to write and speak wonderful praises of one another and of their accomplishments.  A very Venus-in-Libra dream.

^Quincunx Crisis:  Hand of G*d?^

When someone says, "I'm not whining, but . . ."  you can expect some whining!  Well, I'm not whining, but . . . it is very hard to write these reports and be consistently accurate and helpful to the reader.  In the Sunday report which was intended to cover this whole week, I said that things could be getting better because some of the hard aspects were loosening.  Lo and behold, things seemed to get worse in Afghanistan on Sunday and Monday.  And so I re-studied the charts.  It turns out that I was not paying enough attention to the quincunxes in the charts.  These are so named because they are five signs apart. If a planet is at 9 Virgo and another at 9 Aquarius, five signs further on in the zodiac, they are in quincunx.  I have allowed a three degree orb for these aspects, but now it seems I should allow four degrees, based on experience.  Both Mercury and Mars are in a quincunx with Saturn, the 'big baddy' of the planets.  And Mars is the second-worse 'baddy.'  This fits seemingly "impossible" situations such as what is happening to many trying to flee Afghanistan, or cope with possibly horrid conditions there imposed by the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban.  I am praying for the Christians there, who might be forced either to convert to Islam or be killed.  I hope and pray that this can be prevented through divine grace, but do not feel happy about it because the media do not report on the plight of Christians there.  For that one needs the ICC, International Christian Concern, one of my favorite charities.  Of course it is not only Christians who will be in danger, but women and many others. The sun also has two quincunxes, with Pluto on one side and  Saturn on the other.  Not easy.  This double quincunx is a Yod, sometimes called the Hand of God (readjusting things in a way which does not seem easy).  And then there is Venus quincunx Jupiter, women (Venus) in conflict with religion (Jupiter) or, in general, serious differences in viewpoints whether they erupt in violence or not.  The quincunx is not considered a major aspect by many astrologers, but to my observation over decades it is very much major within a four-degree orb.  They can even be more disruptive, sometimes, than the squares and oppositions.  I could mention also the earthquake in Haiti and the fact that as I write the sky is clouded by forest-fire smoke from somewhere or other, the stars less visible all over the West.  

When shall this ease?  There are five quincunxes on Monday, four on Tuesday and Wednesday, one on Thursday, and none by Saturday.  And so perhaps I should have delayed my prognosis of "things getting easier" for a week. 

However (more whining), just as this situation eases, the moon comes into its weekly hard aspect with Saturn (the conjunction this time) which makes the |karmically difficult third| of the week cover Thursday through Saturday.  By next Sunday the 22nd we may feel we have risen out of the depths.  

Meanwhile not everything is harsh.  Venus in Libra (beginning Monday as I write), trine both Pluto and Saturn, is calming.  Venus enthroned in her own sign makes for a sense of expanding social possibilities.  Mars and Mercury both trine Uranus in earth signs could be intelligent original thinking and acting in regard to business or any tangible project.  

We will get through it.  Please pray for those in crisis spots.

Outlook for the Coming Week, August 14 through 20

It has been a hard summer.  My personal astrological opinion is that the correlation to the vaccination mess is Saturn and Jupiter in Aquarius which has for centuries been called the sign of the circulatory system.  Leo is the sign of the heart and Aquarius, the opposite sign, that of the circulation of the blood, pumped by the heart.  We have the "vaccination wars" and it is not pleasant.  I myself do not approve of vaccination mandates and I am happy that some states such as Alabama and others are refusing to require them.  You may be of the opposite opinion.  Fortunately even those states which require them will give exemptions for religious or ethical beliefs.  The good news is that beginning this week major planets including the sun are no longer opposed to Saturn and this should give relief.  Of course I hope it will be an easing of the epidemic and of worries about it.  Well, an easing is not an ending, but let's hope for something better.

Likewise in other areas of your personal life, you should feel some relief this week, with less tension and worry.  Mars and Mercury trining Uranus should help, as shall Venus trining both Pluto and Saturn.  The Afghanistan situation is bad but perhaps there shall be amelioration.  Likewise the crisis or 'invasion' at the southern border of the U. S.  'A strong hand supplanting political hysteria' could mean that people will be more reasonable about these pressing issues, and it would help if we had meaningful leadership.  'Two bulls fighting on the edge of a precipice' shows some of the challenge.  Likewise 'a man digging in the air and sowing to the wind,' which is how we feel when our plans seem to be pointless or not working.  However, there is 'a naked infant, exposed, sleeping alone in an open and dreary place.  Around and above that helpless form are beasts and birds of prey.  But, by some strange power, unseen, this embodied picture of innocence is protected.'  G*d and His angels are merciful. 

[For astrologers:  I am combining the chart for this week with a chart for the entire Bright Hermetic Epoch from July 7 through September 5, which is centered on August 1.  I have found these to be remarkably reliable in my research.  The symbols reported here, in contrast to the ones used in the daily reports, are for that central moment as significant for the whole two-month Epoch.]

'A man peeping around a corner at a company of armed men who are reconnoitering' obviously fits the Afghanistan situation.  It also fits the controversy over the November 3 election, which is far from ended, with forensic audits going on in many states.  This is all justified lack of trust requiring detective or intelligence work.  

We have also 'Man tete-a-tete with his inspiration' suggesting that individually we can let our talents flow.  And 'Early morning dew' which is a promise of Rejuvenation.

}Fumbling Toward a Sunlit Blessing{

Challenge:  'A broken hammer or mallet lying on a carpenter's bench' is something you have done clumsily and are trying to improve.  You may note awkwardness in others who are trying to present their case or win support.  Some who act in a backward manner may be victimized.  'Chickens intoxicated' at least can enjoy themselves while being unwary and awkward.  It's been a tough summer. Depending on artificial stimulation such as alcohol for a spiritual result is futile but provides momentary escape, or, at best, temporarily thrilling self-mobilization.  

Process:  Opposite to the chickens are 'grand dames at tea,' who capitalize on their inheritance and may pass on what they gain to others.  They may seem sedate or boring at first, yet are pondering ways to prepare interesting new developments.  Even, some may have strong powers through keen understanding and knowledge of human nature, plus discretion, intuition and foresight.  

Blessing:  There can be a balance between hopes for the future, which are strong while 'a man makes a futurist drawing,' and the current daily situation, wherein someone performs 'matutinal' devotions on a high mountain plateau as if one of the ancient magi, while the solar Lord of Day visits the horizon.  To this picture Charubel adds one of his most hopeful symbols:  'I see nothing but sunshine; all is bright--a cloudless sky' denoting 'a prosperous person; truly happy; born under most favorable conditions..'  May that be so for us.

Challenge:  There is an inquisitive trend, trying to balance things carefully.  'A flag at half mast' means respect for the past and those who have prepared the way for us.  'A stagnant pool filled with weeds and rank verdure' means clean things up!  Indolence and unhelpful contacts lead to stagnation.  

Process:  'Crossed swords, over which is set a crown' means that some will be aggressive, conquering enemies but perhaps losing peace.  'The rude framework of some temporary building or shelter' is a preliminary development of some exploration or exploit.    One can maintain fidelity to what one believes and this keeps one in the fortifying sunlight.

Blessing:  'A person making a futurist drawing' is experimenting with life, making it an art form.  One could attain distinction through association with someone of high rank or merit.  There is charm in some, or in oneself, and a fascinating, mystical quality which makes people feel favored with one's company.  The symbol is 'A golden ball suspended from the ceiling of a circular hall.'
