It even came aboard. The seamen fed it from their hands.
It hovered over a life-boat, settled on it. The rough sea
Followed, and then the wreck. The life-boat rescued all.
On a rocky island they wondered what to do. The albatross
Seemed to talk. The mariner understood, and wrote a message
Attaching it carefully to the sleek white body.
Away flew the bird, emitting ruddy light, to find the nearest ship.
When the Italian rescuers came, the captain of the craft
Upraised stiletto and tavola, a questionable salute.
But then came great rejoicing, and quaffs of ruddy
Wine. The noble bird fed once again on manna.
