The snake coiled around a tree is poised to strike,
Its head raised high. It loves personal advantage
Gained through cupidity or cunning and is not
Afraid of rivalry and competition. On a rough sea

There is a wreck. A life-boat is dispatched. At last
All are saved. "Thou shalt save many, and thyself."
The captain of the ship in later years sits rocking,
Reliving in memory old seafaring adventures.

Retrospect calls up anew the powers he has
Gained, ready for fresh use. He cultivates
A red tree covered with golden fruit which will
Bless the human race. Around it coils the snake,

Now wiser and ready for whatever daring exploit
The captain shall embrace to save humanity.

Yet there has been prowess. An old sea captain,
Sitting and rocking, relives memories of adventure
And conquest. His retrospection calls up afresh

The powers he has gained in his struggle for self-
Fulfillment. The past fortifies the present.
