\Jewels Discovered/
The clouds look like lead, the man hangs his head,
Walking past the church with broken windows.
Inside they are commemorating something quite unreal
To him. He wants to escape from this monotony.
He approaches a mound of earth with a shrub on top,
Admiring the work of the one who planned it. A face
Looks out from behind the bush, sharp and frightful,
And a raised hand. Something penetrates his consciousness.
He presses on and sees a priest in a monkish
Robe studying beneath a lighted window. Then turns
To his task, picking through the earth with
A shovel. He finds rich jewels reflecting sunlight.
