}The Edifying Riddle of the Ordinary{

The ineffable part of Christmas is pretty much beyond words, although traditional carols and songs perhaps come closest to its spirit. Here I will try to indicate the astrological flavor of these two and a half days.

Effort is not absent. Nor is that to be deprecated. However, it might be that you are not sure exactly in which direction to focus your activities. If the spirit of Christmas is there, work is enjoyable. Young people or the immature take up some of your concern. You may feel that they are weak through indecision. So much seems possible to them, but so little certain. Left or right, back or forth? They need a compass, and where is that compass? You provide it partially or indirectly, just by being yourself. You also need not withhold unpretentious advice when pertinent.

There may be questions as to whether you are unselfish or not. Are you secretly crafty and cruel? Or is someone else? You might think that about someone, even on Christmas Day or the day after. It's partly a matter of perception. People want to be themselves and so resent interference, even if without guidance or stimulus they would be weak and indecisive. Linking with those in the community on a realistic basis is a help.

At another level you are likely to be pondering complex matters and looking for remote or impossible answers. When they seem close there is the thrill of discovery. Then again the answer seems remote. This involves work or career, partly, and finances, but also just knowledge for the sake of the mental security it brings. You can be patient with this quest like a geologist looking for another rock stratum. Then you want to make what you have found visible, to inspire people, through writing, speaking or otherwise impressing their consciousness. At a subtle level something artistic and magical is going on, partly in clothing and ornamentation, which lifts all beyond the humdrum.

People enjoy eating together, sharing in a brotherhood-sisterhood; a fellowship. This releases their zeal for something better in their lives. It can take place in a durable center of the community, a home or institution, where there is a lively chance for positioning oneself between the old and new, past and future. The darkest or most remote part of this domicile is a place where people meditate to get glimmers of what is foundational in their lives. Then they are able to be thorough in living out the details of their destiny with more composure. People nurture one another in unsuspected ways.

Either you are prepared or you feel prepared for something deep and meaningful. You might stumble because, not fully ready, you try things in a quixotic way. The failure is just an opportunity to try again, and learn. That makes you sympathetic with others who feel that their failures are oppressing them even though they try to enter into fresh situations with confidence. The old failures hold them back, until they press on into frontiers which awaken their will to succeed. Life is vivifying even when not fully comprehended; indeed, who can claim to have comprehended?

People are looking for something to rely on, a token, a symbol, an icon (picture, garment, story, riddle, game) to inspire them and certify that they will be guided to a place (in their world or in consciousness) where all will be well. That place in all its splendor could be here if we perceive it and work within it peaceably.

Happy Christmas!
