He could have been a pastor, teacher, professor,
But despaired of being popular. Instead he inhabited
The seashore, hanging out with shellfish groping and
Children playing, in endless self-discovery.

Four careers stretched out in her hopeful vision,
None fully thrilling until she learned to captain
A sailing ship. Masts decorated, sails reefed, it
Brought to her prosperity, honor, plaudits.
//////
She retired to a little village lying in a fertile
Valley, her heart filled with goodness and content.
On holidays she visited the coast where the “unsuccessful”
Man breathed salt air and played with children.

Summer and seashore, now or remembered, open our
Hearts to a magic of earth-ocean laughter.
