\Pride or Friendship/

The first stanza of the symbol-based sonnet sounds to me like our current President, among others. He’s visiting Saudi Arabia “in which a snake is coiled,” where the U. S. gives millions in military aid to an greedy, cruel regime which is wreaking havoc on the civilian population of Yemen. The media don’t tell you about this but I hear of it on a podcast called Breaking Point whose stars are Krystal Ball and Saagar. I recommend it. Also while peace-promoting think-tanks, plus Henry Kissinger and Noam Chomsky, are advising us to slow down, pull back, and realize the coming cost, in lives, destruction, and dollars, of a continuing war in Ukraine, so that we could choose instead to negotiate with Russia and prevent untold suffering, the standard corporate media tell you that this would be capitulating to Putin! No, it would be capitulating to common sense and the human desire for peace, survival and stability. But our “captain goes from one bad choice to another.”

The second stanza could also be interpreted politically: “A gorge waits for a bridge to be built across it” is our American politics waiting for someone on the left, right, or center to be a channel for our better instincts. You may have your own candidate for that. I look and estimate and wait. Whom are we waiting for?

Or you may choose to understand the stanzas non-politically, in your personal context, as giving messages to you individually. The final two hold out the “friendship of sparrows” as possibly more fulfilling than lofty pride.

//////

In a bank of clouds a ship at sea is dimly seen.

The captain goes from one bad choice to another.

He resembles an owl perched in branches of a tree

In which a snake is coiled. Plans could be foiled.

//////

Blankness stares at one who stares at it,

Mystery obscures thought. A squared sum: naught.

A gorge waits for a bridge to be built across

It. Limits yield to channelship.

//////

A man found a lofty place to stand, arms folded,

Head erect, collected and cool, proud of himself.

Sparrows chatter and plume themselves, collected

Together like humans persuasive and sympathetic.

//////

Collecting others, or oneself, one is one’s friend

Or attractive to them, jovial and unselfish.
