It's remarkable that on the first day of a calendar New Year, Mars happens to enter Aries, the first sign of the zodiac and Mars's domicile. There's a sense of wide-ranging potentials, in faraway places as well as at home. One wants to be first in something new or original. There is cooperation between male and female aspects of society and of oneself. One realizes that one can do something in this new year bringing one closer to ultimate hopes.  

Adjusting one's vision to the diverse or contrary visions of others is possible. Then one can present one's view or vision in a way which gets appropriate, effective attention.  

There is rational skill leading to plausible, helpful explanations of natural processes. Therefore one has expanded resources, if one is true to the practical reality of what one has observed and learned. 

The sun and Saturn together in Saturn's sign are strong, realistic, a little morose only if one feels pessimistic, but by sensing what could go wrong (Saturn) one can prevent it from happening. So altogether this is a signal that we can get down to basics, in a Bright Hermetic Epoch (until February 19) of a New Year. Capricorn knows how to plan, wait, and keep persevering until goals are attained. If one got overeager one could make a mess of things by seizing or grabbing at objectives too quickly or without consideration for others, "A wolf standing on the carcass of a horse." But if one remains steady and calm while continuing to try, one investigates things brilliantly and gets excellent answers allowing one to triumph, as if through knowledge gained from "an X ray."

There are elements of wild strength, a desire to dominate the world. You may sense this in others as well as yourself. So if those desires are selfish or not consonant with over-all Good, what will happen? Some will restrain the one who is wrongly attempting to dominate. Yet behind all this one can discern one's ideals, solid and alive, able to mold things eventually in their perfect image. 

Differing concepts of what is best, in religion, politics and elsewhere, require adjustment.  There is a whole crowd of people who might seem mediocre or all the same, uninspired and uninspiring. Then there are those, of whom you may be one, who have a vision which wants to "crow"---proclaim itself. One struggles to express oneself and one's hopes among those who "don't get it" apparently. Yet this may have good results. 

Some work at humble tasks industriously, "A man building a homestead," and bring about salutary practical results for the world as well as themselves. Others work more in ideal realms, spiritual or intellectual, and try to bring uplifting messages down to earth where they can be realized, "Crowds coming down the mountain to listen to one man." Rarely, though perhaps today, these two approaches find a happy union and the world is made better.

}Wise System, Not Overeager Compulsion{

Are you noticing and using and observing what happens during the |karmically serious or sobering third| of each week which I point out here every week? If not, why not? This is the only place on the planet where you will find that information! That's because I, Cosmic Piper, discovered the method for calculating it. I have shared it with other astrologers and they ignore it, for some reason I cannot comprehend. As I have said, it seems to affect the weather, or to correlate with humanly difficult weather. The two most wintery weekends so far in places like Colorado occurred during a |difficult third| period. This once-a-week, approximately, phenomenon has been occurring on the weekends for a couple months; it is slowly moving back so that eventually it will be on Thursdays and Fridays, then on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and so on. But now it is still hitting the weekends. You will see that I predicted that this period would be with us all day Friday, and here is what is happening according to CNN:

"The storm system has caused major headaches for holiday travelers heading into the New Year's weekend.

"Heavy rain and strong winds will combine to make travel difficult by air or road Friday in the parts of the East. Major delays are expected at airports in major cities such as New York, Philadelphia and Atlanta."

Apart from the weather, this is a serious time, good for deep thought, meditation and prayer. It can be good for serious work. It is usually not as smooth for social life or parties, but such things can go well if all are extra sensitive to others' problems as well as their own. It's an introspective time and people's moods can be more glum than they let on on the surface. 

Saturday:  Accurate judgment is a key. We need to validate things--methods, hypotheses, experimental beliefs. Not everything in the universe is mechanical--our souls are not! But in dealing with many factors, such as daily timing and schedules, we have to work with a somewhat mechanical system, such as clock-time. You may feel up for that, wanting to get things in as perfect order as you can so you don't "miss a beat" in important matters. 

There are warnings about what could happen if one is governed by compulsions which are hazardous. One might waste time pursuing things which go nowhere at all. It is good to remember this when one senses that one is ricocheting from one object to another as if compelled by inner and outer forces. Rather, one could focus on the real essentials of one's enterprise. "Hunters starting out for ducks" may be exploiting life, yet they know what they want and go for it straightforwardly.

Venus's sextile with Pluto, while building up to a trine with Mars (exact in mid-January), reveals a sensuous trend, "A fair woman sporting herself on a couch." Sepharial says this can be "voluptuous and sybaritic, self-indulgent and indolent." We may so release ourselves to a degree but probably Venus's septile with Saturn plus the |serious third| will keep us wisely restrained when that is essential. Worldly craftiness is not as good as waiting in patience. One could mar a good reputation by being overeager. All learn eventually to monitor and modify impulses to make everything smoother.

There is strength and solidity, a strong ego-life. This could be too unbending and rigid, or it could be real backbone which discriminates what is valuable from what is flabby waste. One wants to live up to one's ideals and so keeps those ideals in mind so one can measure up to them. 

Our clairvoyants warn us against wastefulness or dissipation, "A man sowing in the wind." This goes along with the practical nature of the sun's conjunction with Saturn in Saturn's own sign Capricorn. We have solid New Year plans and should take them seriously, giving them thought-energy. 

Spiritual impulses and poetic aspirations are not absent and can uplift us. They are good for the body too. "A bunny metamorphosed into a fairy" is ourselves going through a transition toward loftier hopes and ways of living. 

The woman sporting sensuously on her couch is still there, beckoning to luxurious pleasures, but also "An owl in the moonlight" whose patient studies of the wind, stars and other creatures guide to what he really needs.

There could be prosperity, or the promise of it, "A fertile garden under the full moon." Yet one might unconsciously be pursuing some erroneous method for gain or advancement. This could be corrected if one could see beyond miasmic mistaken notions. 

A desire for independence is strong and partially fulfilled. One feels contemptuous of those who would restrict one's freedom to do as one feels best. This could lead to self-centered deviation from the most rewarding course of action, as if one were "A soldier derelict in duty." However, dropping or modifying "duties" which are dubious could be a wise choice in some cases.

The sun's conjunction with Saturn, more intense by the day, plus the |karmic third|, show that we could become gloomy and despondent without good cause. "Something is missing" is the feeling, and that something might be an inner attitude or good way of thinking one needs to pick up on. Then things are better. Realism is not pessimism but patience. Settled habits, while treating family and all benignly, will bring good results, "Boughs of an apple tree bending with ripe fruit."

Ultimate fulfillment seems available, as long as one is not truckling to some false or misleading notions which invalidate one's efforts. What might those be? Some method or methodology which is wasting one's time, perhaps. It is good to seek for what is solid and practical, apart from secret unverified notions. Then ordinary outer fulfillment is not a cheat.

There can be exploration, discovery, and illumination, whether through outward motion and adventure or inward musing and pondering while alone. The thrill of the search is sometimes its own reward, regardless of the quantity or quality of what is found. 

Limitations prod toward gambling, or daring for what seems dangerous, and this can be successful within limits. It is probably kept secret, "A woman drawing two dark curtains aside."

The square of Mercury and Jupiter in Sagittarius with Neptune in Pisces takes fascinating forms. It is illusion, deception, but also spiritual insight and inspiration. It is a clash between accepted, orthodox or authoritative versions of religion or spiritual practices and, on the other side, free quest for the Spirit apart from institutional or traditional guidelines. 

Some feel noble, high-minded, honorable, and fearless of foes. At times one may feel one is in a maze of questioning, with tentative answers which lead to other questions. Ingenuity is not the same as deep comprehension, yet has its place on the path.

Life for human beings is seldom without problems, so I am cautious about predicting "all is roses," yet beginning at the above time today, and through tomorrow at least, we seem free from major difficult astrological omens. The rest is up to us, which should be easy if we manifest the spirit of Christmas.

Even those who have been feeling ill or under the weather seem to have boundless vitality. There could be illumination from spiritual teachings and aspirations, perhaps also from more material or practical studies. The sun's conjunction with Saturn, beginning now and lasting a couple of weeks, gives us a desire to be practical.

Politics is not absent, much as we might want to forget it. Those who want to revolutionize and reform the world may be active and verbal. We need finesse in thinking about political solutions. Where is the Center? I myself am a centrist more than a rightist or leftist. I wish more would look past the rigid dogmas and dead agendas on both sides. There is life in the Center. 

At this time of year we ought to be thinking of those hopeless or abandoned. They may be cast off onto the street, or hulking alone and lonely at home. Making one person's life cheerier is something at least. Even those who choose to be alone, attempting to be self-sufficient, nucleating their own substitute for a nuclear family, deserve respect and kindness.

The seeking soul and the longing heart are among us. The world is their laboratory for trial, error, and re-trial, and the light of intuition is burning somewhere for all. We can enter into naive, openhearted experiences with others and find that the world is friendly. We are each an individual Christ-lit facet of "The human soul receptive to growth and understanding."

P. S. How did you experience the |karmically difficult third| of this week? Actually it doesn't end until the time given above, early Monday. It was with us all day Saturday and here is what happened in Indonesia: "The tsunami struck about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, when many Indonesians were at the beaches on western Java and southern Sumatra . . ."

It often affects the weather, as I have pointed out endlessly here, and we had a lot of rain on Saturday where I live. Some Sunday also. More basically it is internal, causing doubt or depression, but the reasons for that are spiritual, which is why I termed it "karmic." If one's "karma" is good it is generally less difficult, although since others are experiencing hard times one has to bear with them, as for example rescuers in Indonesia.

One has limited time for any task.  I have to take Saturdays off for my peace of mind and today, Friday, I had the choice of writing either (a) two full-scale daily reports for Saturday and Sunday using the symbols, (b) a weekly report for the coming week, or (c) a more general report on "what the hell is going on."

I decided on (c) at the last minute because this seems to have been a week of mayhem. We need to take a deep breath.

Market spinning downward all week, very costly and scary for investors. Trump firing Mattis, pulling troops from Syria and Afghanistan, threatening government shutdown. Brexit is called a "hell" by many Britons and others. Too many other peculiar, obstacle-seeming events and draggy delays to mention, probably in your own life also, and miscommunications.

If that is not the Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch, what would it be? It continues until the 24th, Monday, which happens to be Christmas Eve. Maybe we will really have a Happy Christmas this year.

As I have been pointing out to the astrological community for 38 years (but nobody seems to listen) the period on both sides of the Mercury Retrograde period (admitted by almost everyone to be difficult), about three weeks on both sides, is just as difficult as the MR period. Nobody wants to believe it. I don't want to believe it. But I was driven to this conclusion by hard detailed observation and nothing since I arrived at it in 1978-9 has changed my opinion. Here it is for the present cycle:

A Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch began October 29. (Mercury went retrograde November 16. It turned direct December 6.) The Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch continues, while Mercury gradually gains speed, until December 24. The whole period is a little less than two months.

A Bright or Fast Hermetic Epoch begins December 24. Mercury conjoins the sun (spatially but not temporally the midpoint) January 29. The Bright or Fast Epoch continues until February 19. The whole period is a little less than two months.

Another Dark or Slow Epoch begins February 19, 2019, lasting until April 16. 

The succeeding Bright or Fast Epoch lasts from April 16 until June 20, 2019.

And so on, as you might work out for yourself. But there is nothing "wrong" with the DHE periods any more than there is anything "wrong" with night. They require a different approach. Part of the Cosmic Piper or Cosmic Connection project is working to understand how to live through each DHE, since these are times when there are more tragedies in play, more self-doubt, even suicide. Often there are resignations or reassignments, as Kelly and Mattis in the Trump administration during the current epoch, and thousands of troops in Syria and Afghanistan. It is very important for us to understand how to get through each DHE without going berserk or else feeling very depressed and doubtful about the value of our lives. We might even be able to make them just as peaceful and enjoyable as the BHEs, but this requires conscious understanding of what is going on.

With that comprehension, you may look back over the past two months and survey what has gone wrong, what has gone right, and what you have learned. Then we may be ready for a new world on Christmas Eve.

The |difficult third| has been hitting the weekends, this one almost exactly, a bull's eye. So the weekend could be hectic or somewhat troubling, perhaps a turmoil of confusing Christmas preparation for many. Unless we are able to take charge from our spiritual center, which is not as easy as it sounds.

I too am swamped with things and we are still in the Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch until the 24th, Monday, Christmas Eve. And so I am not toiling at a regular detailed report for today. 

I have however spent hours doing wonderful research (Thursday and every day) and hope to use it in saying something about longer term trends in the weekend report to be posted (I hope) sometime on Friday.

The Full Moon approaches (Saturday) and you may have considerable energy and feel like hopping around from here to there. You may see that you have mis-hopped occasionally and have to straighten things out. Calm efficiency would facilitate participating in community functions happily.

Sudden unexpected events require a cautious safeguarding response. There is sensitivity to the invisible, "Spiritist phenomena," and this can be bad or good depending on a positive response. One ought not to let the invisible, or wild impressions, shift one's purposes pointlessly.

Analyzing things "to death," as the saying goes, does not help, but there are differing opinions and there could be argumentation. An objective viewpoint could help prevent conflict, but the "other" may not have that so you would have to provide it.  

Despite that trend, comrades may more casually chat, gossip and indulge themselves, "Two men seated at a table with beakers of wine." Widely separated factors and people can be attached to one another through communication and interpenetration.

Steadfastness and patience are important. When others suffer what seem disasters this is temporary disruption and one needs to be calm through it. Long-term goals can be secure if we have the enduring steadiness of the tortoise. 

Pleasures, even to the point of feasting, are available. At the same time one has one's sights set on spiritual goals or standards which mandate depth and stamina for human living, "A man bringing down the new law from Sinai." 

Within the gyrations of the financial world, people want to find stability. They may become taciturn, relying on their own counsel. This will probably be effective, especially beginning on Christmas Eve and into 2019. Unique contributions to the world or creative achievements are possible through clever inventiveness. 

There is a peaceful and beautiful symmetry in everything which transpires. One feels good relying on traditions. Who are real friends, who is a rewarding partner? The answer may be at hand, "A golden-haired goddess of opportunity."

A painter, poet, or musician, living or beyond the veil, is important. He or she has been in peril because of some form of persecution or restriction but has contributed much to humanity.

Good fortune could lead to sumptuous feasting. Yet one has a mandate to do something self-sacrificing for the spiritual welfare of human beings. The mental approach to this is complex, but one can simplify it so it can be grasped. 

One feels from viewing popular entertainment that we are surrounded by visible or invisible enemies. Of course this is nonsense, at one level, yet it affects the way we interact with people. One can be prudent and resourceful regardless of what others are doing. At some point there is a party mood, "An embassy ball," and one feels one is successfully displaying one's person, skills and charms.

One works with natural forces and materials in order to sculpt out some form of living which has immortal value. In doing so one feels one is being educated, or self-educated, toward manifesting the potentials one's mother or a motherly being has seen in one.

Someone you know who is going through a challenging transition is a prodigy of some kind. He or she feels called to work or sacrifice for a noble cause. 

People have varied talents but they do not have to be in conflict. Some conservative side of you knows what traditions have helped you in the past and if you hold to them you will find your way, even among varying trends of other individuals.

A feeling of insecurity about some matters could make you too timid in some ways, and too apprehensive in others, so a balanced awareness of potentials is important. There is safety for those who refuse to become hysterical, but rely on nature or other human beings for aid when needed. 

Those who become overly impulsive or headstrong may care about something important but overemphasize a precarious path toward it. This might offend or cause trouble. Yet there are also those who have friendly, kindly instincts despite their taste for wearing masks or displaying comedy. They attract friends who do not fully understand them. Their sympathy and fidelity are real despite their mocking, entertaining way of presenting themselves.

First, some good news:  The coming week beginning Saturday and Sunday looks considerably better than the previous one. Many of the harder aspects are loosening up, and the trine between Mars and Venus is reinstating itself. So while we should not let our guard down, we may find that it is easier to feel on top of what is happening. Meanwhile, the Dark or Slow Hermetic Epoch continues until Monday December 24, and so I include the following which was posted last week but bears repeating:

There seems much confusion about the Hermetic Epochs. I have explained them endlessly here, six times a year since 1999, but people ask me what they are and what they mean, and we have many new readers. Here is a quick rundown.

Mercury goes retrograde (moves backward in the zodiac from geocentric perspective although of course continuing in its orbit around the sun) about three times a year. Mercury is Hermes, Mercury being the Latin name of the god and Hermes the Greek name. 

I discovered in 1978-1979 that it is not just the Mercury Retrograde period of about three weeks which is disturbing, upsetting, and difficult for everyone, but a longer period of almost three weeks before that period and almost three weeks afterward, or a total period of approximately eight weeks. I did this through careful, repeated, complex research into the past in regard to my own life, the lives of people I know, and historic events. 

I decided to call these approximately 8-week periods the Bright and Dark Hermetic Epochs. I might have called them the Fast and Slow Hermetic Epochs. From deep observation and experience, here are some ways of characterizing them

And so on, as you might work out for yourself. But there is nothing "wrong" with the DHE periods any more than there is anything "wrong" with night. They require a different approach. Part of the Cosmic Piper or Cosmic Connection project is working to understand how to live through each DHE, since these are times when there are more tragedies in play, more self-doubt, even suicide. It is very important for us to understand how to get through each DHE without going berserk or else just feeling very depressed and doubtful about the value of our lives. We might even be able to make them just as peaceful and enjoyable as the BHEs, but this requires conscious understanding of what is going on. 

This time, the agenda is as follows:

Dark Hermetic Epoch began October 29 . . . (Mercury retrograde November 16 . . . Mercury direct Dcember 6). . . DHE ends December 23

Bright Hermetic Epoch begins December 24  . . . Mercury conjoins the sun, center of BHE, January 29 . . . BHE ends February 18

(Yes, the "center" of the BHE is not necessarily the center in terms of the length of ordinary time before and after the center.) 

If you ask me, What is the difference between the Mercury Retrograde period at the center of the DHE, and the two periods on either side of it, I answer, No difference, except possibly in degree. For example:  The planes hit the WTC on 9/11/2001 just hours after that DHE began. This was a very "Mercury Retrograde" sort of phenomenon, since it was disruptive, tragic, unexpected, and even now people don't know what really happened. But it occurred weeks before Mercury went retrograde, but on the first day of the DHE. (I hear people speaking of a "shadow period" to describe the times before and after the central MR period, but I have never used that phrase myself.)
