It is amusing (or alarming depending on one's temperament) that the threatened "partial Government shutdown" might begin on the first day of a Dark Hermetic Epoch (October 1 this time) when the moon is in the |difficult third of the week| and also void-of-course (shortly after midnight Eastern Time when the shutdown would begin). I have stated over and over through the years that these are three major indicators to watch, which is why I report them here faithfully. All three were in effect the morning of 9/11/2001. In fact, the DHE began that morning, as it begins Tuesday morning at 6:40 a.m. Eastern Time (until November 27). 

On the other hand, conditions never replicate themselves exactly and there is a chance that the two Houses of Congress will arrive at some compromise or other Monday. At least the square of the moon with Saturn is fading while its conjunction with Mars in Leo while squaring Venus in Scorpio suggests that "the s... (Scorpio) is hitting the fan." Saturn is in Scorpio also (definitely a money sign) but its conjunction with Venus fortuitously ended last Friday and now its aspects are good ones. The square of the moon with Venus (twice a month, this time late Monday evening) is a tricky one. I have seen it produce momentously good results both financially and romantically. Other times it seems lackluster. This time it is with Mars and both Mars and Venus are at critical degrees. We will be out of the |difficult third| by Tuesday morning. We shall see. Then the next issue, the "debt ceiling" imbroglio, will hit us by October 17. Does anybody really believe that this is an interesting spectator sport?

Monday:

There is fiery stubbornness, with the moon conjoined to Mars in Leo. There is an ability to see into others penetratingly, and to command them. Will "others" want to be commanded? Not at first, but all may become intoxicated and then who knows?

Mental powers are acute and focused on advantages. You may have a psychic rapport with the latter. Books, especially those devoted to the occult, mysticism, or deep philosophy, are a potent resource, especially if old and well-thumbed. They even aid financial gain because they put you in the right frame of mind for that.

Financial advantages are available but not without some struggle. You may feel you are looked down on by some who do not understand your personal economy. If you have felt neglected, you may make a transition to a state of mind which appreciates the ineffable and spiritual more than the material.

People are trying to impose their will on others but feel blocked in the attempt (Congress). "Other people's money" (meaning of the 8th house in astrology) is all the rage and the burning question "How can I get more of yours?" Yet there is music, maybe a military band marching unpaid past unguarded monuments in shuttered Washington. A deep side of you rises beyond worries and is confident, with lofty purposes.

One could be at peace about an inheritance or one's personal nest egg, if one overcomes unreal insecurities. But there is a chance you could become melancholy, feeling the loss or absence of someone to the point of bereavement. This is a transitional stage while the sun opposes Uranus and squares Pluto.

Jupiter's aspects while in Cancer are getting smoother, so you may feel you have overcome some dietary problem or eating indiscretion. Conforming to semi-ritualistic patterns or duties is good for you and those with whom you join. Your devotions to the Supreme are essential and do more for you than you realize.

There is danger of dissipating what one has (Congress). A strong partner (the other House) could aid in preventing that. You will get messages easily from the universe, which includes people, animals, whatever you notice on the street or where you walk or drive or surf. Your intelligence is being aided toward enlightenment about the very things which most concern you.

A lot of useful communication can take place. Yet you may feel "out of it," emotionally drained (moon opposite Neptune). Security comes from the angelic level. Complex research may go well, with positive direct physical results (moon in Virgo sextile Saturn).

An adaptable mind is conducive to an approach to magic. "All magic is in the will," said Eliphas Levi, yet the will by itself will fail without Overmind orientation to the realities of the visible and invisible worlds. Correct study can develop that, but if I told you what to study you would not do it. (I would say begin with the Bible especially the Psalms and the Gospels.)

There could be in fact a glut of study of the wrong things. You want to be good, and live up to your ideals, which is wonderful, and then find that this is not easy. Guidance is needed. If you had to choose one spiritual teacher, who would it be? You could make an appeal to him or her.

Will by itself can be iconoclastic, bombastic, selfish and destructive (sun opposite Uranus and square Pluto), which is why the heart of my Lord's prayer is "Thy will be done." By surrendering to a greater Will you are not weakened but strengthened. Sound (reading Scripture aloud), music, song (hymns or religious-spiritual music) can do wonders.

A serious and thoughtful mind makes you respected. The deeper you go into real understanding through higher philosophy the less you will be inclined to fight wrong fights. You will choose the "fight" of righteousness instead, which has no penalty.

The allurement of sports and gambling could be strong for many. One wants to try, to believe in luck, to adventure. I won't speak against this, but doubt it could have positive results today. It would be better to think of longer-lasting pleasures such as those connected with children and friends. 

There is plenty of quick energy at your disposal when you work, perhaps in a secluded area. You are up for it, and don't mind a subordinate position. You think quickly and accurately in response to what you observe, and so can get things done with enlightened efficiency. Humility magnifies utility. The humble see what needs to be done and do it without prodding, fanfare or procrastination.

~A Deviating Approach to Success~

The threatened shutdown of the government because of debt-ceiling negotiations etc. is typical of the "fall" of the sun in Libra, sign of the autumnal equinox. The major downturns of the stock market, when they have been huge ones, have occurred during this time of the year. I do not think that will happen this time although the Market seems to be stagnating until there is a resolution of the budget questions. The Dark Hermetic Epoch beginning Tuesday does make things dicey, but stock prices do not routinely go down during a Dark Epoch. Their very largest drops, however, have been during those Epochs. Just because of general information on the recovering economy, I do not think that will happen this time. Generally the Market improves at Thanksgiving time.

The square between Jupiter and Uranus, commented upon here frequently as an all-summer phenomenon, continues and is important because it is the defining square in a vise-shaped chart--the rest of the sky filled with planets except for the empty square which is the object gripped by the "vise" in this symbolism. Jupiter bites into Uranus--conventional religious and philosophic assumptions bite into the individual who is thinking for himself--and Uranus bites into Jupiter, the thinking individual challenges conventional religious or moral ideas. This is obviously happening in the Catholic Church in a big way thanks to the independent, unorthodox or "liberal" (Uranus) statements of Pope Francis. It is happening elsewhere in obvious or more subtle ways. People are reconciling their individual beliefs and approaches with the way things are in the world of religion, spirituality, mores and philosophy, one way or another. That tends to be conflict originally, then reconciliation gradually, in accord with Hegelian dialectics. 

Saturday:

People in power positions tend to be sensitive or emotional; you are making things smooth with them as best you can. Interests and concerns are intensified (moon square Mercury). The dominant individual uses the worker for good purposes, let us hope.

Busy-ness, conversation, and reporting are going on in a big way. This is "of the moment," but books you love have been around for a long time. You can deal with individuals who are reclusive or misanthropic in a way which soothes them.

Questions of how to reconcile duties with your personal wishes and tendencies are important. There is always an answer. It might look like you are dodging duties in a derelict manner, but you may come back to them in time. Meanwhile you luxuriate.

You feel noble when it comes to reconciling a male and a female, whether you are one of them or not. You use philosophy and knowledge to do this, at least in your mind. Another side of you, indifferent, wants to enjoy music or other relaxing pleasures.

You are not giving up on what is important. You are willing to work at it. The word "honor" as the focus of Fortuna is significant, but you can be playful and sarcastic even while upholding honor or position. Strong attractions, however, might end in a "fall." 

The morale of workers is important, even if they are intellectual workers or professionals. You can bring people together through your beneficent influence. You could heal discord as a peace-maker, whether intentionally or not.

You could push ahead eagerly to settle something, make a deal, show that you are acclaimed. You appreciate a coach, even though you feel bold and independent and want to be free. You could be beneficially intoxicated by your ambitions and hopes.

Study is important and fruitful. What you know and understand determines your well-being. Old reliable books and teachings help. Kindly feelings, affections or attractions facilitate mental endeavor by pulling you to the right contacts for learning.

Those who feel neglected have to make their own way in the world with few resources. They may become enterprising, of necessity. It is possible to prosper and gain a great deal, although the |difficult third| is famous for delays and roadblocks.

Artistic and musical interests and pursuits are favored during the whole month of Libra. Yet today, going with that, is a sharp desire to assert yourself so that your ideas, opinions and privileges are heeded.  You can assure that if genteel and not irritable.

Those who pretend to be other than they are (such as certain "lawmakers") may succeed for a while but if tricky they meet their downfall. There are also allurements through sex, which have been responsible for wrecked careers. 

Eating or drinking too much of the wrong thing obviously affects health. There can be peculiar upsets or imbroglios through forming bonds with the wrong person at the wrong time. To get to the right partnerships requires patient conformity to what is best.

There is a desire to be directed. Is this a desire in yourself or the one you're with? Maybe both? It can be interesting. Some will get intoxicated with self-importance. (Congressmen.) Then they are compelled to fall from level to level of failure until they wake up to what is real and important.

~Well-Modulated Hopes Succeed~

I am feeling (and perhaps you also) the Grand Square among the planets as a frenzy of energy and determination to get things done. This is not always easy and sometimes disturbing--so much to do! Yet when I get in motion I find I can accomplish a lot more in a day than I had expected. I hope something like that is going on for you also, because we have only a few more days until the Dark Hermetic Epoch begins on October 1. Of course, that does not cancel all plans or make them futile, but because it tends to make for more backtracking and indecision it is better to get really important things done now as a way of preparing for the "dark days" (which, like dark nights, can be good for personal pleasure and entertainment provided it is safe).

Here is a paradox to consider. (It is these sort of complications which make astrology hard for people to comprehend, so that they give up too easily.) While we have the Bright Epoch, and also a smidgen of it during the Dark until the "really dark" when Mercury goes retrograde on October 21 for three weeks, we have somewhat harsh or compelling aspects. That is why I said it is good for getting things done. You feel them almost as tangible energies pushing you to "get it done." Fine. Then, during the Dark Epoch, beginning about October 11, we have nicer, sweeter, more pleasant aspects, trines and sextiles, and a diminishment of the harsh compelling squares. So, we have a double indication that the Dark Epoch is an "easier" time in a sense--and could be a time of way too much dalliance and partying and fun! (I have to be a grinch sometimes to be responsible.) So, the message I am trying to get across is, since you will feel like and be pulled into such sheer relaxed enjoyment in the middle of October, now is the time to "get it done." I am trying to follow that advice for myself. Be the ant now, the grasshopper later. (Poor grasshopper, he may be headed for many a fall this Fall, but maybe he will enjoy it all.)

Thursday:

There could be strong passions, intense feelings, too much focused on yourself and what you want from people. One is likely to lose out unless one is able to harness others' feelings to one's own by making clear to them that one is on their side and cares about them. Then they will follow one's lead, not feeling subjugated.

Speed is good if it is well-focused. You can put your mind on just one object at a time, and succeed, rather than being "busy" with too much at once. You would like to direct people creatively, which is fine if they understand why you are directing them in a particular way.

With Venus trine Jupiter, you feel that so much is available! You can luxuriate in wealth or others' wealth. Everyone else has needs, and they need not clash with yours but could if you rely too much on privilege. Rich fulfillment is here! You can re-invest some of it so it stays.

You could win publicity and adulation if you make those who partake of your skill or product feel that you are putting them in a pleasant situation of peace, comfort and simplicity. 

Some self-denial is fine, to cover expenses and provide for future needs. A sense of humor about "doing without" could help. This is a balance to paragraph 3. Venus square Mars can be conflict. You do not have to get ahead of yourself through impulses which would waste your energy or be too forceful to succeed.

Something about real estate, or a home or caravanserai  at a distance, could be promising. You provide for your household needs, and perhaps for others'. The constitution of the earth and the atmosphere wherever you want to live could be worth considering.

A congenial party atmosphere can happen frequently. This could become too impulsive, so that you toss away happiness through a desire to compete overmuch, or refuse to "lose" gracefully. Letting someone else win could be fine. This is true in love as well as games; jealousy could poison things. Seeming to lose a game of love is not tragedy; it makes way for further adventures.

Last call! for finishing things up during this Bright Hermetic Epoch on a weekday, for next Monday is a difficult day with harsh lunar aspects and Tuesday begins the Dark Hermetic Epoch. It's nothing to fear, of course; if you are 30 you have been through at least 90 of them already. But things can get topsy-turvy and muddled. If you have agreements to reach or basic business decisions, now could be the right time. 

Friday:

There are plenty of opportunities for enjoyment, even satiety. You may wonder if things are too easy for you or if you are making them too easy. As long as you are sincere about beliefs and principles, applying the same standard to yourself as to others, your position will be secure.

You are able to communicate ideas you have held back, or kept semi-secret, extremely well. You could fascinate people in power by adroitness of thought and insight, which is also practical. There is less uncertainty than there has been in recent days. 

Those bereft of parents and family are often, in some nations, forced into sexual slavery. This is on the way to being ended most places but is far from ended. You may get hints of some such situation today, even in the U. S. Psychological and physical shelter is needed for many young people.

Libra individuals often argue just to bring out good thinking in others. This can be confusing and it might be going on in your life now. Seeing both sides, estimating them, seeing how they complement or supplement one another, is essential. That can cure gloomy fatalism or ennui. 

You have been grinding away at something connected with your job, career, or project for a long time and may feel that you are getting there. This grants relief and even a humorous perspective on things which formerly troubled. Yet your labors continue, realistically and triumphantly.

"Coming home" is happening. This could be only in mind and awareness, as you think of your childhood home or some other earlier one. Such thoughts give you a blessing by taking the best from the past and catapulting it into possible future situations of homelike simplicity and comfort.

Things are more likely to proceed intelligibly and progressively than they did Monday. Another Dark Hermetic Epcoch is a-comin-, of course, beginning October 1. We have another week to get things in shape before it's time to "batten the hatches" once again. Today would be a fine time to sense whatever you need to do over the coming week to solidify your position and make it more secure.

Your partner may seem unstable or changeable. You can encompass his or her feelings, and want to, and then you feel you have dominion in the relationship. You are also prepared for multiple "relationships" in the sense of quick interests and attractions to fascinating individuals.

Gossip about friends, or maybe shared with them, could be intriguing. Young people startle, shock and attract. Someone large and awkward might be stretching the truth. He or she thinks too much of what he can get, inconsiderate of others. 

Your children, or others', could beguile you, charm you, and get you to acquiesce in whatever they desire. Maybe this has limits but they manage to stretch them. They know how to make you feel loved for their own purposes. You are neither shocked nor offended by that, detecting secrets involved and keeping them secret.

Pride of knowledge is interesting. We are all specialists in something, so all have the right to pride of some kind. If we trust too much to it we could become lazy and let ourselves drift on our credentials. Then if we have offended anyone by our arrogance we are in for a downfall.

The emotional intensity of Saturn in Scorpio comes out in fascinating ways, some of them mocking, jesting, mimicking, so that comedy may appeal, and reflect back to you something about yourself or companions. Your personal beliefs, intense, could limit you if they are misunderstood.

Good judgment about sexual matters is imperative to prevent disaster. It is not wise to submit to a strong drive without the approval of conscience and deliberation. Thinking about what the object of desire really needs would help you solve conundrums about people patiently and elegantly.

What are you fanatical about? If non-violent and not prejudiced, fanaticism deserves the name of enthusiasm. It shows you where to go; where and how to live. The planets are spaced out in a "splash" shaped chart, which suggests you could feel universal, interested in anything, anyone, everything and everyone. The Grand Square magnifies that tendency, so that it would be good to limit your attention to what is most interesting to you. If you were going back to school, or are in school, what would be your choice of specialization? You might benefit by focusing on that. Then other things you care about will array themselves around it automatically, as if in a magnetic field.

Ideas go in all directions, clever rather than profound unless you devote much work to them. You could amuse yourself and be indifferent to everything else. Yet you represent something, in your deeper self, and your work manifests its residue, so you will want to shape it up.

\Social Season Begins Warily/

The thirty days of the sun's annual presence in Libra are remarkable. It seems the beginning of a year in some ways, or of a social season leading to the holidays. Not only students but all are alert to new interests and friends, seeking connections. In the "fall" people "fall" into one another's arms, literally or symbolically; the sun is said by astrologers to be in its "fall" in Libra. This means that while in Aries it is supremely self-confident (at best), in the opposite sign Libra it is confident only that it needs someone. Or so it seems, within the implicit paradoxes of human life (reflected duly in the complex language of astrology).

Sunday:

Grace and charm abound, with a large dose of worry (|difficult third|). Justice and rectitude with old and young mark out a good path. You grope toward what you want, or what you think you ought to do. Something good emerges slowly. 

Those limited or afflicted appreciate attention. They may boast of things they don't fully understand in order to boost their confidence. They have a sense of justice and will appreciate anyone who seems fair-minded toward them and their issues.

Love can be given to unpromising individuals if one senses a germ of goodness in them. There have to be hints of beauty also, the right odors and colors. There are standards also for your willingness to connect with people by phone or Internet. 

Are friends manipulative and scheming, or kind and understanding? Thinking of that could help in your choices. There is a chance to drift today, and you may not realize how careless you are being until you have missed opportunities to fulfill duties which sustain you.

Many are seeking, unconsciously, a mothering quality in a mate. This is a defense against an incapacity to understand or cooperate with others. Mother always understands! Others, not so often. A playful, mimicking tendency must not become violent or wounding or there is trouble.

A growing optimism from Venus's trine with Jupiter can attract people to you. It makes humorous jousts friendly rather than threatening. When you provide material or emotional support, people take to you. You also want solitude to pursue deeper interests at the right time.

Even if it's a back-to-work Monday for you, it's easy to drift, or take the easiest way out--and sometimes that might be best. Thrift, patience and slow industry spell out gain, more than hurried frenzy in any direction. Feelings are strong yet lazy. Detachment and aplomb rule.

Watching diet is helpful; being busy perhaps even more so, if that "busy-ness" has to do with essentials. You want to wander and explore. You can discover things. The mind uncovers a freshness within itself. When feeling on top of things you are wilful and selfish (for good or ill).

In your "off" moments, when everything seems pointless, your guardian Angel may have an opportunity to get in touch with you if you open to Its presence. Children seem purposeless when they play, yet may be naively finding new ways of doing and understanding.

Children can also be willful and demanding. Then parents can start to reflect that back to them. Double trouble. Both are developing awareness and could do so in a more scientific way by observing each other systematically. Self-expression is good if it's not idle boasting or crowing.

Sex fulfillment is a desire for self-preservation and race-preservation. We all know the many ways it can go haywire. We also know the hoary jokes about it (substance of unending sitcoms). Some sublimate it through intense religious-spiritual seeking and well-developed intellect.

Good nature tends to bring beneficial partners. This is happening for some, with Venus trine Jupiter. Maybe there are two partners. Partners sustain each other. They do not try to manipulate each other by black or questionable magic or scheming manipulation. 

Communion with humanity through community functions is easy for some, hard for others. It's partly a matter of temperament but could be sheer laziness. Constant restructuring is going on around us, and you may find that participating in it in your community somehow strengthens you.

As I mentioned to a friend last night, it is always possible to look at all the hard aspects going on in the astrological universe of our solar system (for the purposes of human life on this planet we take the solar system as our adequate universe), and moan and groan about them and wring one's hands. I try to avoid that here, yet I could go to the other extreme of being overly optimistic and then failing to alert you to things which, had you been aware of them, might have actually eased your path. So I keep trying to strike a balance.

It is possible that I have not emphasized enough the Grand Cross or Grand Square (the two terms mean the same) in the heavens, involving Jupiter, Pluto, Mercury, and Uranus. It has been going on since about September 12 and coincides with the conjunction of Venus and Saturn, which is hard at the emotional level. The friend I talked with said she felt people were "blaming her for everything." That is a concise summary of a part of what Venus conjunct Saturn can mean. The Grand Square, adding to this, suggests that one is fighting against too many obstacles or trying to keep too many things in order and feeling that one can never catch up. Conscious choice of priorities helps enormously.

As always, the purpose in thinking about these things is not to wallow in them and say "Oh how awful!" but to rise above them. Knowing about the astrological correlates helps to do that.

The Venus-Saturn aspect ends (by 10 degrees) on the 28th. The Grand Square will continue, because the sun will join it, replacing Mercury as he speeds forward, until the middle of October. The squares want us to be active, to get things done. It is a busy time, so calming oneself and choosing one's most important tasks is a solid part of the remedy.

Friday: 

You have a spending tendency and this could be fine if it increases chances of social intercourse and amity. You and someone you like may be dodging conflicts in order to be at ease with one another. Maybe that is sufficient or all that is possible.

The working man or woman may be ill-at-ease, feeling there is no escape from the treadmill. That could lead to assertion of one's "rights" in an arrogant bullish way. It is hard to say this, but probably more learning or training would be an answer.

A formal occasion is not to be avoided if it feels important. You can display yourself fearlessly among those who are trying to live civilized lives. Some will be more childlike and less pretentious than you had thought, and relax while appreciating your style.

You want to be strong and in command, to rule. At the same time you want the prerogatives of rulership: an easy life, stimulants, enjoyments which weaken you. Well, if they are moderated they need not do you in--by the Golden Mean.

Many feel neglected, or sense the lingering neglect of former days of childhood. There may be no perfect parent (other than the Supreme if one can be adopted by Him or Her). Something ceremonial may help, exalting one's hopes and sustaining faith.

Providing for yourself and those important to you may seem a battle at times. "The survival of the fittest" is not the highest rule of life--loving and giving supersedes it--yet we find we have to struggle often to meet our needs strategically.

Quickness of intellect, perceiving boons to be claimed, is a great asset. You make hay slowly through alert prudence. Stresses, strains and worries ultimately subside, and you feel a recovery of optimism and a desire to proceed forward with all you have.

The morning and early afternoon could be a time to "punt to G*d," look within yourself for meaning, meditate and relax. If you do spiritual study, this is a time for it.

Delays and disappointments could mean: Curtail your attention; place it on essentials. The world is not your enemy, but you may find yourself wishing you did not have to be so diplomatic but could use force instead. You can be resourceful if focused on what is best.

Cleverness is good, especially in your field of competence. Your public position can be one of eminence because people recognize the value of what you do. If you look toward your supporters you will not feel you have to be so defensive toward the others.

If your mind is benevolent, you will be able to relax sufficiently to get clever, inventive ideas which smooth your path and reduce conflict. You may be mostly alone in your planning but feel some support developing in the overall underlying ambiance.

Ad adversarial position toward anyone or anything could be modified helpfully by religious or spiritual attitudes which you already have or could develop through instruction. Someone who seems otherworldly and sensuously indulgent might have something of value for you.

You might be alert for someone taciturn and sarcastic who plays roles, perhaps with delusions of grandeur. Perhaps he or she has psi abilities. Yet he is eccentric, a recluse much of the time, and parts of his thinking could be terribly confused.

Will-power can be strong, if focused on one thing. This could be disastrous if that one thing is cruelty. Rather it could be providing for your future and the future of those you care about. That goes well, with Venus's increasing trine to Jupiter in water signs.

Is passion love, or love passion? Is subconscious cruelty mixed with either? These are questions during the square of Mars and Venus (September 9--October 16). Ways in which lust mingles with love, or transforms into it, are complex and difficult to understand; I don't think the psychologists are close to getting it at all. So we all muddle through. A deep side of you rises beyond such matters to a lonely strength which somehow understands what the Eternal is. Then the storms of passionate feeling subside into some level of super-understanding which might be real love, and there is a recovery of poise.
