☆ Happy New Year ☆ "The world is too much with us" and so we retreat to the innocence of The Fool or The Joker who hosts the last day of the year. A pennant or streamer indicating the course of the wind is vacillating and uncertain, too weak to take a firm independent position. We may wander from place to place, now nervous, now hopeful. If however hopes are attached to ignoble objects we carry with us "a cup, a pack of playing cards, and dice." Well, it's New Year's Eve. Is it a time for serious resolutions or gane-playing? If the letter, "wine and gambling" lead to excesses and a precarious livelihood. Or it could just be some harmless fun. If we turn from the Joker to the King of Spades ruling January 1, we aspire to occupy positions of trust and responsibility. "A roll of parchment is sealed, lying across a scepter." We can keep secrets and confidences. We might "rise to a position of authority, serving our country and king." Yet many regard 12/31 as a social-party time. "A garden of many-hued flowers" depicts "a mind that is genial, kindly and sociable, devoted to the artistic, ornamental and aesthetic.
