\Dropping Meaningless Loyalties for Polished Society/
'An arrow in flight' has aspiration and ambition behind it, forcing it toward success in a high or distant project. There is 'concentration and celerity of action,' yet heredity and training may have been inadequate to make the arrow hit its mark. There could be a decline, 'a falling off of ambition and purpose.'
For others there may be exaggerated independence 'carried to a point of extreme rebellion.' A desire for 'an immediate liberation of the spirit' means one is like 'A deserter from the navy.' There could be good reasons for that. 'Except as man creates his own allegiances, his destiny holds no depth.' One's Defiance (the keyword) could be 'genuine psychological courage in a repudiation of all meaningless loyalties.' Or, it could just be 'inability to follow the rules of any game.'
We are not 'lost souls' but symbols for the day suggest ways in which we could wrap ourselves in apparent 'lostness.' 'An old woman is seated on a stool with a hooded cloak wrapped closely round her.' She has become selfish and jealous. She 'exhibits little interest in the common lot of humanity, assuming an attitude of melancholy or silent and envious misanthropy.' There is danger of isolation, being cut off from kith and kin. 'Let him study to preserve interest and sympathy in all that is human and so escape being abandoned of Heaven and Earth.'
The final symbol offers a remedy for the first three. We possess more than we realize, even 'A stately mansion surrounded by trees in an expanse of pastureland.' We are 'fond of home and desirous of acquiring estate' and may be 'capable and polished members of society; earnest upholders of the traditions of our people and country.' 'Pleasant, frank and humane, we readily attract friends, entertaining them in a homely unostentatious manner.'
