Ladder up which homeless ones climb
For a place to rest. Vagrants or beggars,
Perhaps, yet sometimes they laugh at fate
Like clowns making grimaces. Irony is
Surprisingly comforting. Each, inimitable,
Guards his bag of possessions as if a casket
Of jewels over which he and a cohort fight,
Trying to win a competence for themselves from
Jealous hazard. One, reclusive, retires to a dark
Cavern, its mouth covered by a somber curtain as if
Veiling hidden knowledge. Solitude allows for
Deep unearthing of secrets unknown to those
Too busy with trivia to turn their vision inward.
