Opposing everything, they create discord, and may be deserted or abandoned. Defender. Others are truly knightly and noble, defending the defenseless, aiding the poor. "A man at the gate keeps guard over an encampment of women, children, old people and invalids." Gambler. At a racecourse, bookmakers and bettors devote time and money to their speculations. Nobody can inform them of the results. Expectation. Or one may participate in more normal opportunity-clinching fitting one's own range of skills, like "A child of about five with a huge shopping bag."
