A man struggles in a lake, now up then down, until someone throws him a lifebuoy and he is saved. Some will be delivered by unexpected god-sends. Consignment. There could be "effective employment of the facilities and goods of a modern society" as if one were "an otiental-rug dealer." Various resources are used advantageously through enduring competency. Rusticity. A life of quiet retirement and rustic work is the lot of some. A sometimes morose temperament cannot conceal sincerity and genuine kindness, displayed in "a stretch of broken country with a fringe of woodland." Spring lurks just beneath the surface of the soil.
