The Winter Solstice occurs tomorrow, Tuesday, at 8:00a PT | 11:00a ET | 4:00p UT
One might feel imposed upon by people or the world, as if one were yielding to injustice. One is inventive and ingenious, and does something useful, but gets insufficient credit or respect. However, on this day before the Solstice one could receive revelations or make discoveries, relying on one's own designs while ignoring advice. Protracted attempts bring ultimate success.
Those who are vain 'view themselves in a looking-glass' and delight in their charms. Yet they could receive more appreciation if they would pursue some calling which aids others to appreciate themselves. On this darkest day of the year we are 'alone in a dark and gloomy valley' yet 'a ray of brilliant light comes direct from the heavens on the crowns of our heads.' Thus we make the darkest days a festival of light. But some are 'cyclic men, not time men,' as Charubel puts it, living beyond their day and consequently not understood.
There is pleasure in the simple semi-competitions of life where winning is just playing the game, lose or win. 'A game of cricket' represents sportsmanship where one gives one's all to win but then relaxes and smiles if one has lost. Recognition from team-mates is supportive. At a deeper level, at this abyss of the year a Star appears and 'the Pope' represents the sanctity we crave for, a sacrifice of self for the benefit of all. By appreciating another's sacrifice we are strengthened and inspired to make our own.
