^Mediocre or Magical Night^

Let's revel in a multitude of symbols for the day, and see how they jostle in our minds. 'A sealed roll of parchment lying across a scepter' suggests government positions which are secretive, and none of us like the Deep State or Administrative State utterly divorced from the Will of the People and from the liberty for which our nation is supposed to stand. 'Books and papers in disorder' suggest prolific writing and intellectual pursuits. What is novel is not always a novel but could be a scientific disquisition or essay into uncharted (disordered) territory. 'A tankard set upon a table' suggests old friends and free sympathies with others over a wassail glass; frankness and transparency with humor plus psychological truth. Some may experience such cheer on this New Year's Eve.
'A large group of pheasants' are just hanging out together, whether masked or not, like the amorphous crowds we often have experienced on a New Year's night. Nothing to see there, probably. Mediocrity reduplicates mediocrity. 'A woman entering a convent' would rather say the rosary privately to bring in the new year. Others may wax mystical or occult, seeking the Unknowable in this supposedly seminal season, voyaging toward 'the Pyramids and the Sphinx.' Mysterious, impressive monuments 'provide the fabric for a fellowship of creative capacity.' We imagine the fresh year as shepherding us to something stupendous.
If the Old Year has us still floundering, we may catch a lifebuoy thrown to us by someone or Someone who cares, a godsend to reassure us we are safe. Then we may be up for 'inspecting horses,' that is, evaluating plans, opportunities, or eventualities. What horse do you want to ride into 2022? Would we be credulous, or perhaps way ahead of the skeptics, if we were to take up 'art magic' as 'a magician in sacerdotal vestments standing in a magic circle performing rites' to make 2022 something wonderful?
