• Pageantry • 1 We start with an alarming symbol: "A man in mid-ocean on a raft, famished and in pitiable distress." Obviously this is not literal, but could indicate vain travel, loneliness and isolation. You are not an outcast but might feel you are. 2 However, daily routines could save the situation. "A woman holding a bag out of a window" is just doing commonplace work but it facilitates normal living and calms any dissatisfaction. 3 "A peacock parading on an ancient lawn" could be ourselves exhibiting the various ideals of others in our own persons. Although there is aloofness, superficial excellencies are dignified. 4 "A pageant." "The whole of human life is revealed in an over-all excellence and every least inarticulate ideal is somehow exalted."
