I am feeling both the |difficult third| and the < Via Combusta as I write on Wednesday. It is a challenging time for most of us. I feel "out of sorts" and do not feel like sticking to a rigid schedule as perhaps I "ought." Both those conditions continue today (Thursday). 

"An elephant" possesses secrecy and an implicit confidence in his own strength (Charubel). We need that.

We can be adaptable to the varying beliefs and opinions of others, "A furled and an unfurled flag displayed from a vessel." We have to fly the flag that will be recognized and approved. Our secret attitudes do not have to be displayed. 

Resentment and jealousy might stem from an injurious choice of companions. Or, rather than blame the companions, we might blame ourselves for expecting too much from them. "Let it be" wins more popularity than jealous complaining.

We may feel that our ambitions have outstripped our power to fulfill them. This is disconcerting. Moments of crisis can be a catharsis which transforms motives and aspirations in a more beneficial direction. 

Not all is gloom. Venus and Mars remain in a sextile. "A fair woman leading a child by the hand and gathering flowers" suggests relaxed innocence in happier moments.

There are mysterious individuals in this world. One sometimes wonders if they know they are mysterious. "Whilst living among men, a stranger to men" says Charubel of them, and his symbol is "A dark, moving column--it stands very high." Who might that be in your life? "He has a life of his own, a world of his own, and is content to live and die unknown."

Others are happy to display themselves and their bodies charmingly, "Bathing beauties." This is a service in and of itself.

Is real love a forlorn hope? No, but it may seem that way. Letting go of jealousy and resentment allows us to be less restricted in affections and hopes, encouraging others to feel better about us. 

Pride can also be a hindrance to "being liked" if it makes anyone haughty enough to try to enforce his will. (This, however, might be doable on the spiritual plane if, and only if, one's will coincides with that of the Highest. Has one really arrived at that point? His will is for Good always.)

No matter what disputed points there may be, one has the right to self-preservation. One can be resourceful, and free of pointless limitations, like "A clear mountain stream" consistent in its irrepressible flow.

Someone who has a world mission knows what it is and is capable of fulfilling it, yet conditions, and human inadequacies around him, prevent him from getting as much done as he could otherwise. (Or "she," of course.) 

Being radiant and charming is not necessarily being vain. "Bathing beauties" decorate the beach, the world and our lives. 

Turning one's affections to one who attracts, but does not respond in kind, seems a hopeless situation, though it deepen one's soul through the suffering of unrequited love. Yet such longings, if not embittered by jealousy, gain some reward ultimately at a spiritual level.

Is someone "wayfaring and deceitful" taking advantage of you? It is always good to be kind, of course. Maybe expecting some response or recompense is not wrong, however. 

When hopes are not fulfilled, or go into abeyance, one may feel like "A horseman armed, watching the waning moon." Nothing to do but wait? Simple things are good to do. "A duck pond and its brood" may describe your situation---keeping up with ordinary matters is enough. Being reliable while being oneself prevents feeling hopeless, even if one feels isolated.

A largehearted, kindly person who has great soul force may be in your consciousness or your presence. She or he is not intellectually inclined but detects the falseness or trueness in people faultlessly. 

Is there a noisy bird in your neighborhood whose alarm-clock instincts do not please you? "The first mockingbird in spring" could be anyone who wants to be assertive in a positive way but might sometimes be annoying. On the good side, he or she awakens and quickens one to things one might otherwise neglect. This could be you or someone who stimulates you in a disturbing or happifying manner. The mockingbird can imitate any other bird. Is that you or someone you know?

"A figure veiled in black" could attack "the king upon his throne." Depending on which political or international intrigues you follow, you will sense what this means. A position of leadership is not a picnic. It is impossible to please all all the time.  

You look for what you need as if with lamp in hand at the bottom of a ravine. This could be financial research or a quest for something to buy, place to go or experience to acquire.

Contending against obstacles in a simple and honest way is admirable. You cut out your part in life. While doing so you hear "a celestial choir singing" because you are open to higher harmonies when you are trying to make your life fit in with them.

We are ten days from the center (May 20-21) of a Bright Hermetic Epoch (April 16 through June 19). This is a good time to survey your life and your way of organizing it, your methods, strategies, schedules, and agendas. You are likely to be right about them! A month from how you may lose that clear vision and divagate into profitless or confusing paths. This is not inevitable, but it is the usual process for those who are not amazingly dedicated to their higher Self's instructions. You are more likely to be in tune with such higher guidance now, or over the next ten to fifteen days, than later. So if you make note of, or write down, what you have seen as truly effective and successful methods to be following, you will shore up your future against possibly bad decisions later on. This is an "opportunity time" or an "open window." In addition, Venus sextile Mars (through May 31), accentuating goodwill and cooperation, is showing you how to work with and harmonize with the most important people in your life. Someone who has entered, or is about to enter, the candidate race for 2020 might be prominent today, or if not prominent you might find a bit of information about her or him which shows he or she has momentum. A flag flying atop a mountain shows his or her eminence.

There has been some holding back from participation in life, but now a desire to interact more fully, "A gypsy coming out of the forest." It feels like an adventure to go forward with fresh ideas. 

It takes courage to enter into what is a frontier for you. But there are those, new contacts or old, who will support you in a friendly way (Mars opposite Jupiter while Venus is sextile both Mars and Uranus and trine Jupiter).

However, if the "gypsy coming out of the forest" were to be designing and crafty, wreaking mischief out of envy, the results would not be good for himself or anyone. This could be Luna's square with Uranus, sometimes a shocked rejection of someone.

But if there is no chicanery, an ability to see both sides of issues could facilitate "a double promise." One's sensibilities are broad enough to ensure that one can attain mastery and dominion through dignity and natural powers. Much can be discovered, and one may feel one is at the top of one's powers. One's own genius-like light conquers the darkness. Further, one may borrow light from someone else of genius.

Whatever is useless is disappearing and of that one can be glad. The splendor of a new cycle involves the elimination of what would have impeded it. This is not a misfortune once one recovers from the shock of the loss and the resulting transformation.

"A woman lightly clad is lying in a field, surrounded by violet-colored flowers." This sounds wonderful to me, but Sepharial says that it denotes incompetence. Oh well, let's not deny ourselves moments of luxurious recuperation within nature's refreshing beauty. Competence can wait for another hour.

More warnings against foolishly wasting time are contained in the symbol "A man playing with colored balls, an immodest woman standing behind him." A juggler on an outdoor mall who has caught the fancy of an onlooker? I find nothing to condemn in that, but Sepharial says it shows foolishness and the danger of being crossed by the opposite sex. Worse things have happened. 

I am making light of the warnings, yet we are in the |karmically difficult| third of this week and so perhaps we ought to heed the grinch-like cautions. There are indications in the planetary interactions of the importance of job, career, or other respectable project. 

The final Sabian symbol is 'An open window and a net curtain blowing into a cornucopia." This shows unearned good fortune, a wealth of opportunities and a chance to dispense favors munificently.

If the heart grows cold some higher aspiration  can warm it again.

What seems an unfortunate connection with someone could lead to strife, "Two bulls fighting together." A temporary separation may be wise, or inevitable. 

That would be a natural reticence, or retreat into privacy, for one feels just misunderstood, or depreciated, by someone or several. Are they the wrong associates for you, or just temporarily? Probably the latter. But avoiding those who could pull you down might be important. }Wise Limits Promote Generosity{

Goodness is more natural to those who believe in the Most High. (Or if they are atheist humanists, then in some ideal of a perfectible humanity with a lasting reality greater and more convincing than that of individual destiny.)  

"A man trimming palms" suggests that one enhances life by limiting it along reasonable lines.

"A ship in full sail" shows that we may be dreaming of wealth to be gained in distant scenes. This is not impossible, though the tight square between Venus and Saturn means desires should be curtailed or trimmed back to what is realistic.

Toiling against natural laws results in disappointment, unpopularity and futility. What are natural laws? One can sense them when one's heart is pure. Sometimes they say "less is more."

"A pugilist entering the ring" goes along with the opposition between Mars and Jupiter, showing that disagreements over religion, politics, or anything are inspiring us toward being ready for a fight if the other party also wants it. We also need to exert ourselves, "keep punching" as it were, to establish our everyday security. 

Then we may become as "A strong and prosperous-looking man standing with arms extended, holding in his hands a bowl full of wine." We want to be good, worthy, and generous. We desire recognition, but are steadfast and sincere. Our conscious merit does not seem arrogant when shared worthily and hospitably.

Faith in the Most High, in one's journey through life, is a protection. It inculcates trust in others and their peculiar journeys. 

Adventure is imminent, if one accepts it as interaction with one's "skill of skating." 

An unsettled condition is experienced partly because of one's fondness for change. Swimming against a river's current seems unwise but one might learn something from it and then be more adroit at traveling downstream with the majority. 

It's early in a new lunar cycle. You may be a pioneer, inquisitive, opening up fresh areas of knowledge while bold and fearless.  There is also hospitality to other life-forms or humans, a receptivity to their hopes and a willingness to nourish them materially or spiritually.

I leave it to you to figure out what the moon's void-of-course periods mean. This one is twelve hours. By observing you will see. Negatively, it often seems impossible to get a grip on things or even know what one ought to do or wants to do. Positively, it can be a time of greater freedom to drift, wander physically or mentally, contemplate things from fresh angles, meditate on higher planes. If ordinary times are classical music strictly performed, these times are jazz riffs. (Of course, if necessary one can do precise and detailed work, though probably with more interruptions than usual. I have noted that they are good for clean-up or laundry. When nothing else is working, do the hum-drum but needed. Or, take a walk and flip a coin at each corner to choose your path.)

If feeling disconnected from people or unpopular, this is temporary. A bit of adventure could be fun, "Children skating on ice."

Placid and relaxed times may seem to be threatened by events you cannot foresee. Being alert to signals that point out where there is good fortune would help.  

Holding on tightly to what one has and protecting it is normal, if it does not become obsessive or miserly. Letting go a little gives internal freedom so that one can view the panorama of life without grasping at it, on "The magic carpet."

It's a good time for appreciating the beauties of Nature, and finding some of her secrets.

"Three fledglings in a nest high in a tree" suggests that springtime is renewing all creatures and elevating us older ones to fresh youth. Yes, another New Moon!

Nature's faunae, as well as chance happenings, are signs and portents of good fortune. 

The mysterious inner meanings of all things are sought by venerable ones who are patient enough for solitary studies. They don't seek friends but are befriended by those humble enough to learn.

Conflicts are being dodged through rumination or inner reorientation. This helps Venus, or love, because she is squaring Saturn or facing the realistic facts of the loved one's (both your and the beloved's) faults and weaknesses. Friday plans may shift with the winds especially before the v-of-c ends (afternoon, times above). "A dark curtain covering the mouth of a cavern in a rock" is Charubel's way of saying that we could be reclusive and study the mystical so that we may expand our "possession of hidden knowledge."

Elevated thoughts and hopes are wonderful, "Fledglings in a nest high in a tree," as long as they are not an excuse for avoiding all responsibility.

It is dispiriting when ambitions are cut off before harvest-time. But they can grow up again in a new form. One zodiacal degree indicates "justice, fraternity, and liberality" while doing good works. Why does it always seem that such noble civic virtues were those of our forebears rather than ourselves? 

Venus is at a comely degree, painted by Signor Borelli as "A youth, book in hand, wanders through a glade overhung with branches. The sunlight slanting through the trees falls upon the figure of the student." The Sabian version is "Brownies dancing in the setting sun." Haply Venus's growing sextile with Mars, and trine with Jupiter, will bring us such scenes of serendipitous peace and invigorating beauty both natural and human.

Some unpleasant symbols, going along with the |difficult third| of this week, put us on guard against mixed motives in others or ourselves which could get us in trouble. Is there really treachery, or is our karma trying to teach us something through some mini-ordeal? One needn't blame oneself for everything wrong. Yet it may be better to look to oneself for the cure rather than blame someone else. 

We are in a Bright Hermetic Epoch until June 20, and right now Mercury has strong aspects making for sharp, clear thinking and perception, so you can find answers. 

There can be playful give-and-take, as in "A barn dance." Luna with Venus, both sextile Mars, could make for a gregarious trend.

We have all had ambitions which seem to have been vain. This can be daunting, when one feels one doesn't know what's next, and yet there will be answers for those patient enough to "bait and wait."

"One dog chasing another with a bone" sounds a little too much like some of the business and political schemes we witness. If that shoe fits you, you could own it and then remove it, that is, make your ambitions less self-centered. 

Feeling that one has trusted someone or some institution or organization too much is a downer.  One answer is to be reliable and honest oneself, "An Indian weaving a blanket," so that one's simple diligence will pay off in the long term. The overeager and maybe untrustworthy hare loses the race to the tortoise's quiet persistence.

Feeling lonely and outcast is only temporary. Partly it's because one feels one has much work to do. That effort is good for those around you and yourself.

You feel you represent those who like yourself are treated unfairly in the society or economy. This does not daunt you but inspires you to attack major problems despite inconvenience.

Plans which seem to have been cut short may have been premature. Your active mind (Mercury square Saturn and sextile Mars) can find better ones.

There is reciprocity between yourself and those who please you. Venus's long-term sextile with Mars is increasing until it is exact during the 12th-15th, then it remains until June 1. People may give each other the benefit of the doubt at least at the personal (if not the commercial or political) level, though Venus also is beginning a square with Saturn. Love has to go deep to be satisfying. Motives and intents are being refined. Let's be hopeful and happy for the Other's sake as well as our own.

Wisdom is heightened through personal attractions. "A serpent coiling near a man and a woman" means they could debase themselves, or they could find out the deeper Sophia or wisdom (serpent) implicit in their need for each other.

Attempts and trials may include errors and failures at the beginning. Climbing a mountain requires getting back up after stumbling.

"A labor demonstration," together with Mars opposing Jupiter, shows that many feel they need to justify their position, and improve it, through maneuvering for rights which seem not given voluntarily.  

One should not be vain or petulant to the point of carrying that "labor demonstration" to the point of "an unsuccessful bomb explosion." An impetuous expression of righteous anger can sometimes have needed results if not extreme.  

An adventuring spirit means one does not feel totally settled, but willing to endure seeming insecurity because one has high hopes.  Shrewdness and watchfulness are likely to bring wealth, even now perhaps.

Enduring effort has its suffering, but brings ultimate reward of a high sort.

There is sufficient supply for everyone's needs and you may enjoy either eating out or sharing a meal with someone. 

Or one could go too far with material pleasures, to the point of grossness:  "An ox lies upon the ground asleep in the sunshine. Upon its back two birds are perched." 

Change and travel have their benefits. You consider how to gain through unsettled or changeable conditions, riding over the waves.

The flexibility of your mind can discern what works and handle math or other intricate calculations. 

You have an intuitive sense of how to aid, please, or guide younger ones:  "A man leading two children by the hands."

Along with that there could be an insouciant sense of utter freedom:  "A flock of wild geese." When the mind pauses in its moralizing, instincts reveal themselves as basically ethical.

A bit of a drift, denoted by the v-of-c, is not bad on what is a non-work day for most. There could be some gloom, a sense that "nothing is working, nothing worth doing," so one needs to contact one's higher Self for inspiration and guidance. Recreation or re-creation has its own value.

"A large archaic volume" saves what is indestructible from past experience and its accrued wisdom. We all need a Bible of some kind to keep us centered in what is lasting rather than mortal. 

Those who inspire confidence and faith in others in a beneficent manner are rare ones, attractive to the youthful. Someone not a parent but parental has a flock of young adherents. That could be you or someone you observe and admire.

The long-term sextile between Venus and Mars began Friday and continues through May 31. Have you felt it? It is improved relations between the sexes, or within them when there is strong attraction or affinity. This is a blessing. 

One might observe others falling or failing, and feel concern while unable to do anything directly. One does not glory in their fall yet feels victorious because one is still able to carry on, perhaps for the sake of those very others. 

Those who listen to sermons or other spiritual messages may detect fresh significance in them, "A man teaching new forms for old symbols." Interpreting and comprehending what our experiences mean is a long-term process. 

After Luna enters Pisces (time above) you may have a better sense of realistic gain for the coming week, how to prepare for and live it successfully.

The good spirits of yesterday are likely to carry over into today. We can celebrate the advent of weekends free of the |karmically serious third|, through most of the summer.

Charubel gives the symbol of someone standing upon two crossed swords, holding a sceptre pointed heavenward. He says this indicates "a person of peace" who "confides in the higher power." We need more of them. You may feel you can reconcile the world's disharmonies. You stand upon the crossed swords so that conflict subsides.

Your roots and your background are your resources and give you security when you feel there are issues with anyone. Some "archaic volume" or book of wisdom lifts your spirits if you heed what it is spelling out.

The "bluebird standing at the door of the house" has been a persistent symbol and indicates good fortune, allied with Jupiter's presence in his own Sagittarius, the cheerful sign. Mars's opposition to that suggests that friendly instincts can overcome disagreements.

On the less positive side there are clues that one ought not to be lazy or irresponsible, attempting to drift through life without effort. Well, it's a Saturday, so I take that advice with a grain of salt. You may take compassion on a street person who has very little. We do not have to denigrate or admonish such people; life is doing that in numerous ways. Kindness gives hope.

Yet there is confidence for most. We feel cool and collected, with more than a dollop of pride, and maybe that is justified. At the same time we can have acute insight into trends, using our implicit higher faculties to detect opportunities and happy connections.
